Has my friend's iChat account been hacked? Has mine?

I have been using iChat with an AIM account with iChat for years and have never seen anything like this.
I just received a chat message in iChat from somebody on my buddy list - but it wasn't my buddy. It was somebody wanting me to join a sex web cam site.
Has my friend's iChat-or-AIM account been hacked? Has mine?
Is there a way of reporting it?  I don't know if he uses an Apple account or an AIM account. Either are possible with iChat.
I couldn't find a way of reporting the abuse on the AOL site. All their contact forms and phone numbers are for paying AOL members only, and I was unable to post in their forums. In the meantime, I set my iChat privacy levels to only allow buddies to access and removed my friend from my buddy list.
Advice is welcome.
Thanks,
doug

Hi,
You should know who is contacting you fro the Chat Window itself.
It's title will either be the Screen Name of the Contact or the Real Name if they are in your Address Book.
Either way the Screen Name will also shows as the Grey text info at the top of e Chat Area.
The Apple IDs ending in @mac.com and @me.com (from MobileMe) are valid AIM names.
You can see the Screen Name of someone in your Buddy List by mousing and holding over their Entry.
This may display two or more names if you have them listed on their Address Book Entry.
They should change their Password, either at AIM if it is an AIM Name or via iForgot for Apple ones.
Then change it in iChat so it will then log in
Next, no matter what sort of AIM valid name it is they should go here and Log in.
Next they could use the Lifestream option and set the Privacy Level they want.
Repeat for the Actual Privacy setting.
It used to be possible to Create a Display Name in the Registration Process  (It was a one page deal where you could see it)
The current Process for Registration is a step based process and I have not created a new name to follow it through to see if Display Names are allowed.
However it still appears in those AIM Settings
Choose Manage Account > Click the Edit Button (You will be asked a security Question)
At the new page choose the Greetings option far right.
Another new screen has a drop down to alter the Display Name.
This means that someone could have search Lifestyles and then used a new Screen Name and added a Display Name that at first glance Looks like your Buddy.
I doubt that they have been Hacked as such.
It is more likely the DIsplay Name method has been used.
There is one other option.
If they have used  Mac in a public place and entered their Screen Name in to iChat there And their Password the computer will remember the password to the Keychain.
Even if the iChat Account is deleted from iChat the Keychain will still have the details and anyone with access can find out the Password.
(if you don't enter the password iChat will pop up a separate request each time you try and login)
If this is the case then changing the password should help
You/he can also go to IChat > Preferences > Accounts and deselect the option for Multiple Logins.
If another computer (Or app) is logged in when you next start up iChat you will get a Text chat from AIMSysMessage (An automated response from the AIM servers) asking if you want to Log the other login out.  Reply with a 1 (type just the 1 and hit enter) will log the other instance out.
I spent some time searching the AIM/AOL help pages and using Google to see if I could find anything but only came across prompts on how to do it on the AIM for PC app.

  • Has my iCloud account been hacked?

    Hi,
Since this morning I am having big problems with my iCloud account. When I woke up I opened the mail app on my iPhone which says my password is not correct.. Strange, as I have nothing changed at all! I never have to enter my password (it's saved in the keychain and on my iPhone)..
So I gave up my password in the mail settings on my iPhone to make sure it's right. However, it was rejected! Then I opened up the maill app on my MacBook (with the right password stored in keychain) but I either got the message "IMAP-server 'p01-imap.mail.me.com' did not accept the password.
Then I tried it on iCloud.com, but it says that my account has been disabled because of security reasons and it asked me to set up a new password at iforgot. It gave me the option the send the password to my email which was not an option as I have no acces. Second option was answering the secret question..... unfortunately the answer was not accepted as well. I am quite sure the answer was good because I always have 2 answers to secret questions (but there is a change I have set an other answer which I don't know).
Anyway, my password is correct for 100%. It has always been that password and I use that password for an other email account as well. I really don't know what to do now. Has my iCloud account been hacked? This password is only used for my iCloud and Gmail and I am always really carefull with my passwords.
    Please help me.
    many thanks
(I hope my english is fine enough)

What you have experienced, though annoying, doesn't necessarily mean someone has hacked your account, though if you were finding that you were blocked because the sending limit had been reached that might indicate that you had been hacked.
What can happen is that when people receive emails which appear to come from their own address but they haven't sent they naturally tend to be concerned: however it's most unlikely that anyone has hacked their account, they've just been targeted by one of two common spammers' techniques: both arise because it's all too easy to forge the 'from' address on messages to be something other than the real one.
There are two methods. One is that the sender has forged the 'from' address to be the same as the 'to' address (so other people will see it coming from themselves, not you), presumably in the hope of confusing spam filters. It's harmless, if extremely annoying. Delete it (never ever answer spam or try to unsubscribe from it), and you don't need to be worried about it.
The other problem is that a spammer is forging your address as the 'from' address on a whole batch of messages. The first thing you hear about this is when you start getting bounce messages because the spam has been sent to non-existent addresses and is being bounced to you. There's no point at all in responding to it. It's infuriating but normally stops after a bit as they move on to another forged address.
There isn't really anything you can do about it: closing the account isn't really worth the hassle unless you are totally swamped, because you will have to tell everyone your new address. Apple can't really do any more than they already are about spam. However changing your password on general principles is a good idea.

  • Apple FreeLotto message, has my friends account been hacked or worse?

I went to my friend's place to help them with anoher problem when they showed me their iPhone.  It had a message about winning some Apple FreeLotto Promo and to contact a non Apple e-mail address in Romania.  While I'm sure it's a scam, the problem was that it wasn't an SMS or app notification, but a kind of message I've never seen before.
It was a message with large white text on a grey background with a white rectangular dismiss button with large black writing.  Pressing the home button didn't make the message go away. The message said "Your mobile number has won #990,000 GBP in Apple Freelotto Promo,Ref No:######,to claim send your name, email & mobile to ###########@####.ro" The first # is actually the British pound symbol.  The second lot of ###'s is the reference number, and the third and fourth lot of ###'s were from the e-mail address.  I was able however to take a photo while the message was still there by pressing the home and sleep/wake button.   The only way to dismiss the message was to press the Dismiss button, after which the phone was in the locked state.  Maybe the phone was locked before the message first appeared.  After that I couldn't find any notifications or any such message in SMS, e-mail, the notifications centre, or other appe..
What kind of message is this?  Does this mean that my friend's Apple account has been hacked?  Or could it be worse, e.g. that her iPhone or Apple's servers were hacked?
Just in case, I got my friend to change here apple ID password.
BTW: The phone is an iPhone 4 or 4S running iOS 7.1.1.  She bought it from a phone carrier and is unlikely to hjave ben jailbroken.

You got a Flash SMS. Someone or prankster use a tool.
    Read this from Wikipedia:
    Flash SMS[edit]
A Flash SMS is a type of SMS that appears directly on the main screen without user interaction and is not automatically stored in the inbox.[63] It can be useful in emergencies, such as a fire alarm or cases of confidentiality, as in delivering one-time passwords.[64]

  • Has my Apple account been hacked?!

I received the following 2 emails just now:
    Hello,
The following information for your Apple ID XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX was updated on 11/28/2012:

    Dear XXXXXXXXX,
Your Apple ID, XXXXXXXXXXXXX, was just used to purchase Gift Certificate for [?] from the iTunes Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID.
If you made this purchase, you can disregard this email. It was only sent to alert you in case you did not make the purchase yourself.
If you did not make this purchase, we recommend that you go toiforgot.apple.com to change your password, then see Apple ID: Tips for protecting the security of your account for further assistance.

I defintely DID NOT change any account info or purchase a gift certificate.... have I been hacked??
I immediately reset my password but now I'm scared I'm going to be charged for something. I also checked my online banking and nothing is waiting to be taken out of account.
The first email was sent from: [email protected]
The second email was sent from: [email protected]
Are these official emails, since I did not change/purchase anything I'm now worried these were fake emails and someone will now have access to my account (I clicked the links in the email and reset my password from there).
    What should I do???

UPDATE: I've just had a pop up on my iPhone which says:
"You downloaded an app on your computer. Turn on Automatic Downloads to receive apps on this device without having to sync."
    NO I DIDN'T!!
This has happened after I just changed my password......

  • My Skype Account been Hacked, and I can't seem to ...

    Hello,
Hopefully someone can help me here.  My SKYPE Log in has been hacked by someone.  I can still access my account with my Microsoft (hotmail) log on.  I can only assume that they have used my old Skype log on to get in and change details.
My concern is that I am finding the lack of contact from Skype/Microsoft very frustrating.  I have filled in the Customer Support Team query, then got an email back asking for me to complete again.  Since then, I have recieved nothing, not even a confirmation that they have received my return and are looking into it.
Is this normal?  Surely you would expect some acknowledgment of reciept?
    Can someone please help.
    Thank you
    Peter

If your email is deleted, that doesn't necessarily mean your Apple ID is. Try resetting your Apple ID password at iforgot.apple.com and then all you've got to do is go to Settings > iCloud > Delete Account. From there you can enter the password you changed it to and remove your iCloud account from your device.

  • Help...iCloud account was hacked in the worst way.

My friend's iCloud account was hacked in the worst way. The hackers accessed all of the account's security measures, changing the birthdate, security questions, etc. They even accessed the backup email address. So if we try to "reset" the account password, the hackers get the follow confirmation email that is sent automatically from Apple.  We are at a loss for what to do.  We set up a new Apple ID....but that ID doesn't have the pictures, music, etc. from the original ID attached to it.  She is heartbroken.....and feels like her identity has been lost.  I just put a firewall on the modem and set up a highly secure VPN network to protect her computer.  I also just enabled the Firewall through OSX.   But now.....how do we reclaim her original Apple ID?

  • Apple ID been hacked?

Suddenly my old apple id (the one that is not my email address like for icloud) is not working with the password I have always used. When I went in to reset the password, I put in my birth date and it said it was wrong. Then I tried the email option, but have received no email from apple. Has my account been hacked? If so, what do I do?

Welcome to the Apple community moonlight94.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact AppleCare (or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.

  • IMessage has been hacked? My account used?

It appears my iMessage ID has been hacked or stolen, my best friend is on iMessage and receives messages from me, using my name, but not my Apple ID, but my name appears, and has a URL Link and that's it.
    Questions:
    How have they done this?
What can I or Apple do to prevent this (without adding the person to the contacts list and then blocking!)
If they have my name, how do I know they don't have other things like my password or account details, and therefore can use my account?
    Anyone else had this?

Hi - this happened to me last night.
A message on my phone showed that I had signed on to my iPad to use iMessage and I had assumed my niece was playing around with it so I hit OK. This morning a couple of messages were sent out to my family that were sent from my "iPad" well after I was asleep ... I have changed my password and disabled iMessage for now till I can look into it more.
Here is a screen show (not sure if it will help) of what was sent lol

Last night I was at my friend's house. So in the morning I have came home and logged on to my skype well The first thing I see is about 140 messages for a guy named Nate talking to someone named clairee martell. They talked for a while. So when I saw this I logged on to my account and changed my password. I just want to know if there is anymore ways I can make my account alot safer. I have had this account for a very long time. • Hi Apple support, my name is Derek Turner and I have been hacked through a friend's email account and I wish to know if 1. I can clean my email list of names and account with software and 2. How is it possible to delete emails that are still coming back

Hi! My name is Derek Turner and I have been hacked through a friend's email message to me which I opened unsuspecting any danger.  Initially, he sent me an 'attention' or warning email with a link which I tried to open but it could not be opened, so I left it not knowing what it was all about at the time.  Later, I received another email from him (probably the hacker) and opened a 'not very pleasant' web site.  It did not twig with me at the time as I am a bit new to this type of thing but when I mentioned it to my wife she immediately said that I had been 'hacked'.  By this time it was too late, and it infected all my email addresses!  I would be grateful if you may know if there is software that I can use to clean up my email account and if there is anything for iPad minis that can prevent this happening in future? (Malware, Firewall?).  I am also getting emails back that relate to the hacker and I cannot 'delete' them from my iPad, only on my PC!  Any suggestions?
Thank you for your time regarding this matter,
Derek Turner,( a very new iPad mini user!)

    Hi,
I don't think that can be solved by any advice the regular posters could post here.
I would go back to Apple and explain the situation (again).
I would also consider closing the account (Apple rarely seem to do this as accounts are never deleted but just closed).
I understand this may cause issues for things purchased in iTunes and the App Store which my include Restoring the OS at some point.
