Has my MacBook Pro melted due to heat?

I have a Unibody MacBook Pro, and near the hinge on one corner of the lid it has this weird bend?
I've never dropped it, so the only way I can imagine that this has happened is through heat - it does get hot there, but I didn't think it could get that hot.
Here's a pic: http://yfrog.com/jmrvfsj
What do you think? Will Apple repair it?

I recently went on a trip and took my MacBook Pro with me. While in the airport waiting to board a plane I decided to play a movie while I waited and to my surprise when I tried to plug in my earbuds from my iPhone into the jack on the left side.. my case was so melted that the plug would no longer fit inside the jack. I began to inspect the case and it was very noticeable that the case has melted due to heat. I have a difficult time believing that this case is made of aluminum. I am also a welder and work with aluminum... the case is warped and curled under, not typical of melting aluminum. I looked further and the left front corner (if closed) of my display is also melted with a divit in the lid and the corner is turning/bending up. My MBP is out of warrantee as I have owned it for almost 2 years now. I called the local Apple store in Huntsville AL and made and appointment to go have it looked at. I have never once dropped or misused this computer or left in in the sun. It has always sat on a marble table top or on my lap. I have noticed in the past that sometimes it gets so hot in my lap that I have to put it back on the table for a while and let the cool marble top heat sink some of the pain away. The gentleman that I spoke with, Vance Hughes... with the supposed title of Genius told me in not so many words to go pound sand. He told me that he has worked in the Apple store for years and has never seen a case melt like that, in that spot. He accused me of setting it on a hot surface because there was nothing in the computer that could produce enough heat to do this type of damage. I assured him that I am an honest guy and I never misused it or set it on anything hot.. He said that the parts could be replaced but it would cost me over $1000.00 and I should take it to an aftermarket computer store to have it worked on. What really ticks me off is 1, he in not so many words called me a liar and 2, would not even consider standing behind the Apple product. I understand when a warrantee is up, normal wear and tear is expected.. but this has got to be a design flaw and it is just a matter of time before the computers that were purchased around the same time as mine (December of 2008) will start showing the same problems. This computer has been plugged in almost since the day it was purchased. Is there any relief to this issue? I would think that Apple would be very interested in why my computer is melting. What if it caught on fire and burned down my house..? Then what? I am going on record here that this is a problem and I hope that no one else experiences the same issue but on the other hand I hope that everyone does so this problem in some sense gets validation.
Respectfully,
MR.

  • MacBook Outside Melting due to heat?

    Hello there,
My MacBook was doing just fine, until this morning when I noticed somthing unusual. The side (if the screen was down, and you looked at it leveled) left to the touch pad had begun to deform and have two "curves." I have only had my MacBook for 9 days, and becuase this is on the side of the battery, I am considering that this is the problem: the battery heat. I don't think this is a cosmetic issue, is it? Will Apple replace my MacBook? I bought the AppleCare for it, but by the time I called them, it was past their working hours. I thought I would get some help here.
Thanks in advance to all the help.

    krovek647,
Call Apple again or take your machine in. It should not become hot enough to melt. There could be other reasons for the slight deformation on the palm-rests. They may have been there before, there may be some perceptual issue where it looks dented, but is just covered in oil, or the plastic itself may just have a mild warp to it. If you press lightly on the area to the left and right of the trackpad does it squeak?
To be honest, if it suddenly curved inward and was extremely hot to the touch I would recommend against using the product until it had been evaluated for safety by the manufacturer.
It could just be a one off issue with the keyboard deck which is easily resolved through a repair.
    Good Luck,
    -j

  • My macbook pro power adaptor getting heated

    Hi

Is there any solution for that.

    我刚刚尝试了一下,我的电源适配器也好热!但是不至于融化的温度,可以尝试换一个吧。
I just have a try, I find my power adapter is very hot! But it is not the melting temperature.U can try to change another.

This is the problem. My father just got an iPhone 5. He has a Macbook Pro 2009 with OS X 10.5.8.  The iPhone is not compatible with this version since the iTunes is an older version as well. At our local Apple store in my home country, they told him he needs to upgrade (which I agree of) but that the memory of this computer is not enough to hold the newer OS.
Please help, he does not really agree with buying a new computer just because of the versions.

  • Macbook Pro Melted Its Own Casing - Expert eyes needed on this photo please of my macbook pro

    This is a 2008 15" Macbook Pro.
At the genius bar I pointed out that the computer was so hot I could barely hold it, so hot the computer had warped it's own plastic casing where it connects to the power source.
So the genius guy took it in the back, opened it up, diagnosed a fried logic board and said "For $310 we'll fix up anything in the computer, you'll get it back good as new."  In 2010 the logic board also fried and was replaced, and the heat cooling system was then replaced - looks like the same issue all over again.
So I took it home to get the data off the hard drive, but when I brought it back a few days ago, the new 'genius' made a different diagnosis.
Without barely looking at it, without taking it in the back, and without listening to or believing anything I told him, the Genius Bar are calling this impact damage - overriding the previous genius's assessment.
How can the perfectly symmetrical ripple wave in the plastic which goes top to bottom through a half inch of plastic be created by impact damage? And that the plastic piece below is not warped would mean I would have had to have removed the bottom piece of the computer, dropped it, then put it back on, in order for it to not be warped like its top half.
Are there any expert eyes out there who have an opinion on this keeping in mind the symptoms?
Additionally when the computer was its hottest, the trackpad would not click. The plastic must have expanded from the heat. So it would click, but only if I pressed really really hard. Doing this one day the plastic on the trackpad actually shattered from clicking it. But the shattering must have removed the surface pressure from the expanded plastic and therefore the trackpad became fully functional again in its shattered state and that's how I've been using it for quite some time.
I really appreciate any expert support from the community here if you disagree with the 2nd geniuses because I am complaining through official channels. I do not want to pay extra for damage the computer did to itself. Especially when this is the 2nd time the logic board fried on this computer.
I am someone who has owned apple's first everything since the 80's, and have worked on two Apple commercials myself. I'm currently typing this post from a PC... Does Apple want to satisfy its customers anymore or what?
I never did get a feeback solicitation emailed about this appointment either, I wonder why.

Each time I look at this post - the moderator has edited it again into something different than I said. Moderator, I'd prefer to remove this entirely if you are going to change the meaning of it. How do we do this? The above posts at 9:25a and 9:57a are not my language at all. And the moderator looks to have removed my ability to edit my post.
An update to the discussion (which I will repost separately when the moderator removes these ones which s/he's altered) - apparently this happened to other people as well - enough to bring a class action suit on apple forcing them to repair the issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2536493
    http://gigaom.com/apple/is-apple-blind-to-nvidia-related-macbook-pro-failures/
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2675881?start=60&tstart=0
The Beverly Center apple store handled this 1000% better than the 3rd Street Promenade Store did - just got back the Macbook Pro, entirely repaired for $310, just like the 1st genius as 3rd Street Promenade told me would/should happen, overruling the 2nd set of geniuses Adrian, Phillipe and Matt.
I tried the 866 customer support # at apple to tell them about my unpleasant experience with 3rd Street Apple, and was routed around in circles being on hold for 12 minutes at a time - got nowhere. They told me I could give feedback at apple.com/feeback - but this site offers nowhere to plug in unpleasant experiences with the genius bar - only allow one to complain about equipment. So despite all the phone calls I've made, my experience has gone unheard by apple.
Though I've twice paid $300 to have the fried logic board replaced on this computer, I am asking apple to reverse the charges due to the class action and known issue with the NVIDIA graphics card on these models.
Not only did they replace the casing (which was melted), they replaced the battery which was leaking and had expanded, replaced the fried logic board, and the fried CD player. Additonally, when using this computer before, I periodically felt little shocks to my wrists where my skin contacted the edge of the casing. And the computer was so hot I couldn't hold it. If these aren't heat/power issues, I don't know what are.

  • NoO!!! not my beloved macbook pro.. battery/hot heat issues..

    I have a macbook PRO 17" serial w8622....
I have read about the heat/noise/battery issues wi macbooks.. but I didn't see any complains on the 17" version so i assumed we were lucky or we didn't have those issues....
I got my mine middle of July of 06'...and it worked like a charm i mean it did get "warm" but hey its a "supercomputer" right? so i didn't give it much thought PLUS i anytime it got "hot" i would sit or sit IT in front of a fan and boom after like 5 min's back to cooLneSS!!! till now!!!!
ALL of a sudden I started noticing that it got SUPERHOT in the center of the macbook like RIGHT where it says MacBook Pro on the screen....that AREA was getting crazy hot and EVEN putting it in front of a fan for an hour really didn't do much.. which was shockin to me as it always had cooled it down previously... I have been on vacation so need to travel much and so lately its been plugged in a lot..not 24/7 but alot...saturday i took it wit me for a drive and thats when my nightmare begins...
It was workin fine..jus like normal then it got down to like 73% of battery life left...NEXT thing i know is its at 20% like in 5 min's!!! then puzzlin over this quadary witt in 5min's it shuts down and won't turn back on... now i'm confused as all get out.. get it home and start chargin it back up thinkin its a fluke... get it at 100% start using it as normal then again somewhere around the 70-75% range of battery life it shuts down again.. at this point i start to panic...
I figure maybe a battery calibration will do the trick...so i go thru the procedure leave it alone for a whole day and then charge it fully before I use it.. and then it seems that did the trick...as i now watch it go (pretty quickly i must say) down from 70% thru aprox 20% which before it was jus makin the jump...everything seems fine now TILLL outta nowhere it jus shuts off.. BEFORE i could get it down to 3%, 2%, 1% before a shutdown and even then i would get some kind of warnin...but now PI YOW!!! outta nowwhere at random it'll shutdown anywhere from 10% to 33%........
I have spent now 2 days researchin this and readin the forums on here about this... and still i have not found to much usefull info on the 17" macBook Pro...
I have even tried lookin at my Full Charge Capacity and it always reads anywhere from 2234(mah) to 4987mah again for Full Charge capacity, for the macbook 15"'s i have been readin that normal is 5000mah and that there is a battery recall for that model..
D*MMIT the strangest thing jus happened as i type this....even now as i was debating whether to post about this..my battery got down to 40% and then outta nowwhere it jus shut off... now i'm gettin a bit peeved but I run quickly and plug in the charger and then i'm able to turn it back on w/o losing my stuff( i have learned if i do this VERY quickly i can sometimes bring everything back up before shutdown) so I plug in the charger and bananas if it doesn't start chargin it up at 0%!!!! when i know i had it at 40%..... and THEN the kicker as i'm typin up this very post i see it go from 4% BACK TO 40%!!!! jus like that.. there is no doubt NOW in my head there is some kind of problem....
under battery info as of right now it states:
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh) 3369
    Reaminin Capacity (mAh) 223
after a few min's and wit battery level now at 61% i checked the settings again:
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh) 4704
    Reaminin Capacity (mAh) 2864
what in sam hill's name is going on here?
PLEASE PLEASE tell me what i can do to get this working correctly....
    what are my options?
What can and should i do?
i'm VERY new to the world of mac/apple and i can say i like it alot but i'm not seein how the macheads go above and beyond to toast the virtues of apple v/s microsoft and the windows world it seems like any any product apples has its same share of issues right?
thank you all!!! i appreciate any help and feedback!!!
    oNe
p.s. after the battery calibration AGAIN like before if i sit in front of a fan the macbooK gets cooler now and the middle no longer gets hot like before which is what i personally think messed up my ish!!!

aight the PMU reset seems to have did the trick i mean now it works NORMAL as in it gets down to 3% and i'll get a warning of low reserver battery.. i.e. no random shut downs at odd percentages like before 40%, 20%..ect.. now i'm showin anywhere from 5104 to 6174 for mah for the battery... whats up wit that?
oh and tho my battery/random shutdowns seems solved now i have to now deal wit CRAZY INSANE heat from the macbook.. i mean before it got "warm" i brushed it off as its a super computer.. but now after the PMU reset it gets f*$ck'N insanely crazy hot.. it seems to center around where its labeled macbook right above the # keys.. and the underside gets so HOT NOW that its "almost" painful to the touch.. most definatly I can't rest it on my lap if i'm in shorts or boxers....
any ideas wit that? i don't want it to die on me.. that much heat can't be good? please, please... this is my first apple and i jus don't want to be dis illusioned by this whole experience..
thanks again for all the info!

  • Do any Macbook Pro 17" have NO heat issues?

I am on the fence as to whether or not to buy or wait until new models come out to see if Apple actually fixes this issue. I use "notebook" computers on my LAP all the time. I've searched and seen that some seem hot... some not so much. *Can someone tell me if the issue has finally been solved and if so what manufacture date to look for?* Also, does solved mean comfortable?
Looking at MacBook Pro 17" 2.93 with 7200 upgrade.
    Thanks for any help!
    Thanks for

The user manual, I believe, still states that the computers should not be used on one's lap because of possible heat injury.
All Intel based laptops run hot unless they weight about 7 pounds and can have large fans and heat sinks. But if you want a lighter and thinner computer then they will be hot because there's only so much space inside for fans and heat dissipation systems to function.
This is not a "problem" that can be solved. This is simply an engineering limitation.
You can visit a local Apple vendor to see if you can test one of the new laptop models to determine for yourself if they are too hot for your comfort. But I doubt you will find anything different from other manufacturers such as Dell with respect to their light weight laptops.
I use four different Intel laptops including a unibody MBP. I do not use them on my lap, but they all run comfortably to the touch unless the CPU and GPU are under heavy application usage. Then they can get pretty hot.

  • Our household has one Macbook Pro & Multiple iOS devices.

My wife has an iPad and iPhone and I have an iPhone.  We have separate Apple and iTunes ids.  I want to safely backup my wife's data w/o losing anything or merging our data.  She hadn't backed up her iPhone or iPad or done any of the updates for 3 months because she'd reached the 5 GB limit on iCloud.  There were a lot of pictures and videos from a trip home to New Zealand and my daughter's graduation from college that had not been backed up.  Last weekend I read some articles on the internet that said iCloud did not back up videos and suggested using both iCloud and iTunes.  I tried iTunes with my iPhone and all went well.  Then I attached my wifes iPhone and had two choice 1) new iPhone or 2) restore.  I didn't know what option 1 meant so like a fool I chose restore (terrible mistake) and everything in her phone was deleted and replace with a duplicate of my iPhone.
Needless to say I'm in the doghouse in major way!  Even so, I still need to know how to safely backup her iPhone and iPad.  I bought the additional 20G of iCloud space after getting her phone back the way it was as of the last backup 3 months ago.  But that still doesn't help me save videos.  And, I'd like to be able to save everything to a stand along hard drive just in case the iCloud backup fails or her devices stop working.  I'm able to use Time Machine to back up my laptop to an external drive so one thought is to somehow get her pictures and videos onto my laptop so I could do a Time Machine backup.  I don't know if that's possible or the best solution.
Sorry for the long story but I need to know how to do this this safest, easiest and best way.  Right now I'm afraid to hook her iPad or iPhone up to my Macbook Pro for fear I'll lose everything yet again.
    Thanks,
    Jeffery Scott

victoryhat is spot on, on your Mac you should each have your own user account with your own accounts and data files.
Backup the IOS devices to iCloud, transfer the vidoes to your Mac with iTunes and backup the Mac with Time Machine

  • Why does the MacBook Pro make a loud heat noise?

So, when I was playing a game called "Modern Combat Domination" my MacBook Pro make a very loud heat noise? Does that mean I should stop playing the game? I worried. Thank You.

That means your fan(s) sped up to dispose of the excess heat generated by playing the game. It's a sign that your machine is taking care of itself properly.

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo, Normal heat problems???

Hi guys. I have a First Generation Macbook Pro, i bought it like 8 months ago from ebay. The guy that sold me this mac told me that it doesn't have any heat problems at all, but im just, im sorry, i can't say the same right now.
Since i receive, when it turns on, It's ALWAYS 45 (Centigrees), ok, even if i don't start any app, it heats up to 50-55. Well. Then, when im doing normal stuff (Like, You know, using Adium, Firefox, just web browsing and hearing some music with itunes) it heats up to 60-65... The worst come when i use photoshop and Dreamweaver. Gets to 68 to 78, and then i must start using 3rd party Apps for control the Fans of the computer (im using SmcFanControl) moving the fans to 4000 rpm... But the problem get's when im trying to play Starcrat or use any other app that runs with rosseta, Easy can get to 90...
The Macbook Pro never shut down because a heat problem, but im just worried about it, this is normal?, here is the normal Specs of my computer.
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Other problem i have, is that the Battery of the macbook pro, when i unplug the power cable it just turn off, without any advice that my battery is getting out of power. Is this normal? The battery have been changed before, like a year ago (again, from the words of my ebay seller)...
There's anything can i do?. I have applecare and i still have coverage until March 2009.

The temperature ranges you report are "normal" and nothing to be concerned about.
Battery: Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery every couple of months.

  • Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2012 - Heating up issue

I bought Macbook pro 15" mid 2012 (non-retina) one year ago.  I have Mountain lion installed.  I recently facing that my laptop heating up so much nearly 90 degree Celcius when I'm using iPhone, Lightroom, Photoshop applications.  It seems normal like 45-55 degree celcius when I'm browsing, word, excel and other applications.  I use this on table (hard surface) but still when running those applications I feel the laptop so hot.  Is there any problem on those applications or problem on Mountain Lion?
There is a problem in battery I'm facing.  At the beginning stage I got nearly 5.5 hrs of battery life just with browsing or with some word documents.  Now I'm getting hardly 3 hrs max with the same browsing or with some word documents.  I use 4 points of brightness and not so much applications running but why the battery giving so low power?  I wonder will the heat damaged my battery in the recent months (3-4 months I'm facing this heating up issue).
    Please all answers are welcome.

Thanks for your information about the heating issue.  I'm bit relaxed now. :-)

  • Why has my MacBook Pro stopped outputting audio on external speakers?

Since buying a MacBook Pro in April 2007, I had no problem playing recorded music and Internet radio on external analog speaker systems in two different houses. Suddenly this summer, the audio no longer plays through the external speakers --though it still works fine with the internal speakers. There were no major changes or accidents. The only technical issue I had was the recent malfunctioning of my laptop battery, which Apple acknowledged was defective and replaced yesterday. (I hoped that the problem might be resolved by the new battery. But it hasn't been.) Most of the discussions I've read about audio troubles with the MacBook Pro don't apply to this situation. (The most-discussed problem had to do with the internal speakers no longer working, often because the MBP's audio out port had inadvertently gone into digital audio mode.) My MacBook Pro is a 2.33 MHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.4.11, The mute button is not on. The speaker sound is up to max. And when I check the Sound status in System Preferences, the info line correctly identifies the speakers. The default ID readout is internal speakers. And the ID reads external speakers when I plug the external speakers into the headset/audio out port, But the sound plays only on the internal speakers, not on the external speakers. I miss listening to my music library and favorite NPR stations on a good sound system, where ever I go. I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks

If your computer was hot it wasn't asleep - it either didn't go to sleep or it work up after you put it to sleep. I've seen both things happen. First, read this article and follow the instructions.
    1) For the next few days/weeks pay attention to the blinking light on the front of your computer when you close the lid. Don't put the computer into your backpack/case until it begins to blink. Wait a minute or so after it starts to blink to make sure it doesn't stop blinking - the signal it woke back up.
    2) having followed the above instructions, if you take the computer out and it is hot again or if you take it out and discover it has powered down (you'll know this because when it starts up the battery will be drained and you'll see a progress bar over a ghostly display that will eventually become normal) immediately start the Console program and perform a search on 'sleep' and then 'wake'. This should bring up all the recent log files about sleep state changes (going to sleep and waking up). You should see one for when you put the computer to sleep and put it away and the next one should be just after you got it out. You'll find at least one though that shouldn't be there. That will tell you when the computer work up (when it shouldn't have) and might give a clue as to why.
One of the whys could be a magnet that is making the computer think the lid has been opened.
