Has my mail been read?????

How can you tell if an email you have sent was opened and read?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Technically there is no way a computer could tell if an eMail you sent has been actually read by the intended receiver. You'd have to ask in person and have the recipient repeat the contents to you in person to be sure.
Most mailservers completely ignore mail receipt requests. Even if they don't they only tell you that the mailserver has received the email, not that the recipient has retrieved it as well.
Most mailclient applications ignore mail receipts as well and those that don't leave it up to the user if they actually want to send a receipt back. Default usually is not to send it.
But even if you do get a receipt back, what does it tell you? Nothing of value. Somebody has clicked on that mail and had it displayed for long enough on screen to trigger the receipt. 1 second is enough for that, but nobody actually will have read your message.
To make things weird at last, you can't tell if the've only looked at the attached pictures, and ahven't read your message or if they have even understood a single word of it. It might have been somebody else having access to that computer who didn't even bother to look.
Conclusion:
Any technical receipt will have an information value just below zero if your recipient really read and understood your message. Forget about receipts, use instant messaging (Jabber/iChat/AIM/ICQ/Yahoo/Skype/MSN etc.) if you want to be sure or talk back to the recipient about the matter.

  • Has my mail been sent?

    Hey everyone!
Yesterday I sent an entry for a contest, I heard the mail being sent but I checked today and it doesn't appear in my Sent folder.
The problem is that I don't know if it has been sent or not and the contest rules say one entry per member so if I send another one I might be disqualified but if I don't do anything I might be not entering the contest at all.
    Can anyone help? Thanks.

This guy seems to have the same problem, and in his case his recipient confirms receiving the email.  Hopefully the same for you too.

  • Has my mail been migrated from Yahoo to BT Mail?

I have heard nothing since the email in the spring about being migrated to BT Mail, but I had to set up a sub-account for my husband yesterday and it seems as if I am still on the Yahoo system.  I expected that this would have happened by now?

Afraid not - It is still in progress and no one really knows how may existing customers have been successfully migrated. If you open the webmail interface and get a Yahoo interface, then that address hasn't been migrated. (you don't necessarily even have all your email sub accounts migrated along with the primary).
When you are being migrated BT should alert you. you might like to have a good read on the Email section of the community to see what various people have discovered about how to survive the migration as painlessly as possible. Then do feel free to ask whatever questions you like and people here will try and answer you.
If you usually collect mail by IMAP or pop3/smtp, then you should make sure you have adjusted the settings in your email client to match those required by the BTMail system. That method of collecting mail should be the most seamless during the migration (should!!) - as long as you have the right settings, then there should be no need for password changes on your email client and the same settings that work before migration will work afterwards (as long as you have done the recommended port/SSL changes already).
If you usually use webmail, then you have to wrestle with BT's rather complicated BTID login instructions relating to the migration as that login method WILL change when you are migrated. But there is help here to guide you through.

  • In Apple Mail, my new messages are coming in without the blue dot, as if the messages have already been read.  Why?  Has my computer been compromised?

I did not use my laptop all day.  This evening, when I looked at my new e-mail from earlier today, only about 3 messages still had the blue dot, that shows on unread mail.  I watched new messages come in. One new one came in with the blue (unread) dot, then maybe when the next new message came in, the blue dot disappeared from the first message, but appeared on the new message.  The 2 subsequent e-mails came in without any blue dot.  I had not highlighted or opened any of those 4 new e-mails, or any of the previously delivered e-mails from today.  I cannot find anything in system preferences or in mail preferences that addresses this issue. Anyone know why this is happening?  Has my computer been breached or hacked?

Ok, so even thought no one has answered, it appears that once I move mail to the "On My Mac" mailboxes, they no longer exist on the server (though they can be moved back there if desired).  Which means that I'm fine if I migrate my hosting to a new server, and redownload them, because the mail in "On My Mac" will be untouched.  The only thing I don't know about is the "Sent" mail, but I believe those also exist on the server, and therefore if I migrate them then the link relationships are maintained (no idea about the mail that is "On My Mac" that has links to "Sent" mail in the server, but I guess that isn't so important).
As for keeping a completely syncronizable Mail application - the only way it appears I'd be able to do that is to forgo "On My Mac" entirely, and keep *all* mail on the server.  If I want to move mail into different folders, those folders would have to be Server folders created for that account, and hosted by that hosting company.  This actually doesn't seem like such a bad move, especially as we get further and further away from having only one device that we use to process Mail.
Are there any disadvantages to *not* using the local "On My Mac" folders?  Are there any major advantages to using them?

  • How to get notification that a mail has been read

Is there any way to use Java mail to tell if a mail that you sent has been read?

I think you are asking too much....
ok fine i will put that in a different way...see for sending mails you are using JavaMail right.... and u might be sending mails to other mail servers say yahoo.com or hotmail.com...or anithing else... so when the person at the other end reads the mail...say yahoo.com... yahoo server knows that the mail is read... so it is impossible to reply back automatically to the person who sent the mail...
yeah it is very much possible if this is with in the server...say withing your organisation like <[email protected]>...so that u are implementing both the parts i mean reading mails and writing mails... so the control is in your hand.
I hope I am very clear...
    all da best

  • HT5934 With the new ios7 my every time I receive hotmail it shows all mail as unread when it has already been read

With the new ios7 my every time I receive hotmail it shows all mail as unread when it has already been read

I have the same issue with a non-hotmail POP3 mail account. Must be a bug in iOS7 as it worked without a problem in iOS6.
The funny thing is that if you select "Edit (upper right corner of the screen)/Mark All" there is no "Mark as read" choice here, it reads "Mark as unread". So the built-in Mail app knows that the messages has been read. (Note that I use a non-English iOS language setting, so the actual labels may differ).
And the next funny thing is that only the really unread mails (new ones) are marked with the ussual blue dot.
I have already sent a feedback to Apple about it.

  • Notify when mail has been read

Is it possible to set Mail to notify you when messages you have sent have been read?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

There is a Mail.app plugin available for Jaguar/Panther Mail that provides a read receipt request but I don't believe a Tiger Mail.app version has been provided.

  • "Contacting server for information" when selecting a mail that has already been read

In Outlook 2013 using an Imap/google account I very often the message “Contacting server for information” when selecting a mail that has ALREADY been read. I am not trying to forward or reply just simply selecting the mail. Why is the program trying to get
information from the server that it already did receive once?
How do I get Outlook to stop this ridicules behavior?

    Hi,
Does this issue happen on each email you selected?
Outlook displays this message whenever it needs to load content in your email, but the required content is being downloaded slowly or there is a connectivity issue with the content location.
Please try to go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Automatic Download and untick the check box labelled "Don’t Download Pictures Automatically in HTML E-mail Messages or RSS Items". Click OK and then test again.
In addition, if the email has a linked image, the image will not be downloaded locally on the system and it will be downloaded every time you open the email.
Besides, some third-party add-in may also cause such issue. Please try to open Outlook in safe mode and check if this issue continues. To do this, exit Outlook, press Windows key + R to open the Run command, type
    outlook /safe and press Enter.
Please let me know the result.

  • How can I see if a sent e-mail has been read?

Having moved from a PC to a MAC, in Outlook and Thunderbird I was able to get an e-mail response when an e-mail I had sent had been read. I have searched preferences within Mail but have been unable to see how to set set this up.
    Roger Scott

There is no option for read receipts in Mail.app, thank heavens. There are a few scripts around which supposedly add this function but from what I have read they are unreliable and I don't know if any would work in Snow Leopard.
As an aside user of Outlook (which supports them) can disable this function so asking for one can be a waste of time.

  • Mail running under LIon no longer grays out the name of the sender of an email that has been read.  How can I get that to happen?

Under the old version of Mail, when an e-mail was read, the name of the sender was greted out so that I knew I had read that email.  This does not seem to happen under the new Mail thaqt came with Lion.  Help!?

    Kirk,
Thanks again for your suggestions. No, I don't get an
error message. In fact nothing happens. My name and
key are typed in and from what I understand, once you
do that with a real key it directs you to the
registration page. When I get done entering the
information the window just sits there without any
    button or option to continue.
QT Pro is already in the QT (non-pro) you installed and the key (which is a hash of your name in part) allows the Pro features to work.
No redirect, internet, nothing like that. As such many people have activated and think they haven't. Just look at the menu items and see if the "Pro" logo is shown next to a few (which are greyed out and not available without Pro). If not you are done.

  • How has Yahoo! Mail been working for you the last few days?

Has anyone seen any improvements? What about sent mail, has everything actually indeed been sent? Has "push" mail improved? For me I've found all my sent mail has been sent since Monday AM, but I have been power cycling my iphone 2 to 3 times a day(maybe that has something to do with it), as far as "push" mail, still the same for me, sometimes I get the message right away, other times with a delay of around an hour.
    Cheers

I don't send much email from my iPhone so haven't noticed any problems with that, but I have noticed Yahoo push working very well (virtually instantly) for the last couple of weeks. I have a job where my phone needs to be turned off on a daily basis and often 3-4 times per day. Take from that what you will...

    Diana,
This could be a delay while internal service records were updated. Check it out again - is it okay for now?

  • When a read receipt shows delivered, will it then show read once it's has been read?

when a read receipt shows delivered in messaging, will it then show read once it's has been read?

Lets think about this for a bit. You have no problem when sending from Thunderbird. You have the problem when sending from 2 different Android smart phones that Thunderbird does not run on. You are connecting to your IMAP email account that is run by your email provider and viewing the folders on your provider's mail server.
You are threatening to stop using Thunderbird? The one part of this equation that works. It is free software so I am sure Thunderbird will not miss the lack of revenue. I am just trying to understand your logic or lack there of.

  • Why are e-mails (subject line) and ("to" line) still staying in bold print after they have been read?

After I read an e-mail, and after I hit the back space arrow, to look at my list of e-mails, the previously read e-mail still shows up in bold type. Usually when an e-mail is read, and you then look at your list of e-mails, the e-mails that have been read show up in light grey type so you can distinguish these e-mails from the ones that have not been read. Why is this happening? It is very difficult to remember which ones I have read when I am looking at over 100 unread e-mails.

Firefox is not an email program, so your problem depends on what site you are using for email. What site are you using?
