Has Photoshop CS5's Memory Handling Gotten Worst with Updates?

For the last year + I've been running:
Photoshop CS5
Windows 7
12 GB RAM - 7GB allocated to Photoshop, although Windows Task Manager can show as much as 11GB being used by Photoshop.
Asus P6T Deluxe v2 Motherboard
Latest nVidia and now latest ATI video card
Around February I was working on a 2.5 gb file - 8000 x 6400 w/ 100's of layers. It was handled just fine in Photoshop all day long - 12 hours.
Recently I've been working on smaller 500 gb files. After maybe 6-7 hours of work Photoshop reaches a point where palettes are slow to open and close. Everything seems to be hesitating. I fix the problem by restarting Photoshop.
So, I'm thinking about just upgrading to 24 gb, since that seems to work for some people. Before doing that though, I'm wondering if there's any other solutions I've missed.

Another thing:
If I hit Edit > Purge > All, my system isn't affected at all. The RAM amount used by Photoshop stays exactly the same.
Basically it looks like the RAM usage just keeps building until Photoshop needs to be restarted. I even reinstalled Photoshop to make sure no hidden plugins, etc. were installed. It didn't change the memory usage.
I did find some other threads in the forum on this RAM allocation topic - it sounds like it's a mystery problem with no solutions yet.

HI, I just bought Photoshop CS5 and I have a problem with HDR pro . when I am trying to mount 3 images together it act in a strange way ( the images appear and disappear many times) then when the window with the result appear and I say ok it open up in photoshop as a single image ( in the layers there is just 1 photo) and when I am trying to work it up with the Plug in/filter HDR Effex Pro (Nik softwear) a pop up window appear saying that the file is missing and the operation it is not possible. Why and what is happening ? Someone can help me ?

This is normal operation. The output from HDR pro does not produce a layered file. You make all your adjustments in the Nik Plug-in. Once Nik has finished you then make any rinal changes in Photoshop. Trying to use NIK again on the image in Photoshop is not the way to do this.
When HDR pro comes up do you see all the presets and controls? Presets on the left and controls on the right

Photoshop CS5 can't handle lots of text..?

Recently migrated to CS5.
Was running Photoshop CS5 just fine for a week, working mainly on images... but now that I need to work on something that has more text in it (like a graphical CV) the screen isn't reflecting the changes I'm making.
I can click inside a text box, but I'll never see the cursor. I can type, but I'll never see what I'm typing. What was there before I clicked the text box is still there. It's like the viewport's frozen.
However, if I exit the text box, zoom out and zoom in... I see the changes I made. Ditto if I move the layer around.
There's something wrong with the viewport refreshing. I even turned off OpenGL, reloaded the whole thing... and it'll only work properly for a minute or two before nothing I do in this document gets immediately displayed. I always have to move the layer around, or do the zoom trick, to see what I did.
What's even more peculiar is that this file is only 5-6 megs in size. I've worked with 6 GB (that's right, GB) files in the past week without any problems, because the text was minimal. But the program can't handle a peanut-sized file if it's got a lot of text in it. It's the weirdest thing.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so, what have you done to remedy it?

Unless you can identify which of your corrupt fonts is causing the problem, we won't be able to fix it.
It might be a bug in our code, or in Windows. But it is almost certainly going to be due to a corrupt font file.
We haven't seen that particular problem, or we would have already fixed it.
So we need to know which of your fonts is corrupt and causing the problem.
Font previews are created before you show them, in the background -- a corrupt font file can cause problems when creating the previews and slow things down for a while.

Problem with Photoshop CS5. Memory and Harddisk spaces

Just got CS5 Master Suite. Whenever I open photoshop it takes a ton of memory 1 gig +. When I open files it takes up more and more until it takes up all my memory and hard disk space. I open a simple multi layered file that is 25 megs in size to work on it. Before I know it photoshop is taking 20gigs+ of my hard disk space along with 3+ gigs of system memory. Is there a memory problem in photoshop cs5?

So I just opened the 25 meg file in photoshop cs5 and watched my free space on my hard drive go down 8 gigs the instant I opened it. It went from 27 gigs of freespace to 19 instantly.
I am running a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6., 4 gigs of ram on board.
anyone else having simular problems?

UPDATE:

Only way to correct it is to quit photoshop cs5 and wait a few minutes for the space to return... and it takes a few minutes for it all to return.

OpenGL Photoshop CS5 and memory management by OSX 10.6

I was able to find out quite a bit about the secrets around this issue - see my post on "NVIDIA Geforce 9400M and Adobe Photoshop/CS5 question".
What I still do not understand is the following Apple-remark (in this case on the 17" PowerBook)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
Intel HD Graphics with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 256MB.
For me as a layman it reads "You buy 512 MB and 256MB of graphic memory but if your programs will get it will be decided by OSX 10.6"
What I am also wondering if there is a utility or a Terminal-input that allows to influence how much OpenGL gets from the regular memory DRAMs.

Since the posting I have had no single problem with my 144MB VRAM - though it is somewhat noticeble that more VRAM would accelarate like when I use complex plugin from NIK or parallel video recording with EyeTV. What I avoid is to work with Photoshop, export downloaded TV-clips with EyeTV AND watch life Television.

I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended and am having trouble with it.

I just reinstalled Photoshop CS5 Extended from my original disk because I was having trouble with it. I did do an uninstall before installing. Every time I quit Photoshop I get this message: "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders." Can you tell me what to do to fix this? I went to get info and made changes to read and write, but it made no difference. Thanks for your help.

Some folders are hidden in the Finder. Use the "Go to Folder" command for that.
Go menu > Go to Folder, enter:
/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings

What error do you get when going to Help>Updates in photoshop cs5.1?

Adobe photoshop cs5 12.0.3.... update manager is now asking for old update 12.0.2

hello... i have photoshop cs5 fully updated with the
latest version 12.0.3 and until yesterday everything was fine.....
now something stange is happening because de adobe update manager is asking me to update to version 12.0.2.... off course at the end of instalation of this update it gives me an error because i have the most recent update installed.....
but, when I run manualy the check if there is updates pending it still appears the version 12.0.2 in order to install!!!!
this just could be a bug in the adobe servers or what?????

Updater logs can be found at following locations
Win Vista and higher: <os-drive>:\Users\AppData\Local\Adobe\AAMUpdater\1.0\
Win XP: <os-drive>:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\AAMUpdater\1.0\
Please zip the 1.0 folder and send it to [email protected] for investigations.
Meanwhile, after sending in the logs you may try to delete the 1.0 folder, it should fix the issue. Do update the thread if the issue indeed gets fixed !

Has Photoshop CS5 Extended added a "Behind" and "Clear" in MODE drop down box?

I am not sure what just happened with my PS. Was downloading and installing some custom patterns and brushes from the net last night. And when I went to try them out I noticed the drop down box had 2 new added effects ( Behind and Clear ) which I was not able to even access because they were not live. It is the drop down box which has the normal, dissolve, darken, multiply etc. etc. up on the top left hand bar. I was going to upload a picture but I keep getting a message saying this file is forbidden, even after I scaled the image down to the required fields. I was wondering if some one can help. I hope it wasn't a virus from the internet files I downloaded.

They are brush blend modes. To use you need to have the brush tool selected. Open a new layer and paint with any colour. Chose another colour and make the blend mode Behind. I bet you know what will happen now? ;-)
Clear works pretty much the same as the Eraser tool as far as I can tell. Might need to actually read the manual to get more info on that.

Upgrade from LR2 to LR4 - Have Photoshop CS5 Extended - LR adjustments now lost with RAW files

I have:
Windows 7 64bit
Lots of ram
Lots of disk space
Lots of everything
I have CS5 Photoshop and LR2 - and all works perfectly. I import my RAW files from my Canon 5d2 - and I can edit and adjust - then if I need to export to PS to make further adjustments before saving back to LR. Nice and easy like it should be.
I've installed LR4 as an upgrade to LR2.
Now when I edit my files in LR - and then want to tweak a bit more in PS - when I 'edit in> photoshop' I get my original file - not my edited file, which is very frustrating.
I want to be able to operate like LR2 - make some edits - then off to PS - then back before any final edits,
Why has it changed? And when will we get it back to editing the file with the adjustments built in?

I've already installed ACR 6.7 - and that's helped a little - and I now get the edited file - but not the whole edited file..
So if I crop - that edit carries over..
If I adjust exposutre - that edit carries over...
If I change one of the 'new' settings like 'blacks' - that doesn't carry over...
See below - the image on the right has some 'black adjustment' - and then when edited in PS - you can see a very distinct difference:

Photoshop CS5.5 - Unable to select Open With...Photoshop or Illustrator in Windows Explorer

When I am in Windows Explorer or just in a Folder and I Right-Click on say a .jpg file and select Open With... I am not able to select Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator for that matter. I have Dreamweaver CS4 and that shows up as an option. I have gone through the process of trying to add the Adobe Photoshop .exe file, but it still doesn't work. However, if I open Adobe Bridge, I am able to select Photoshop or Illustrator to open a file. Is this connected to my install or is there something else going on? I did uninstall an ancient version of Adobe Photoshop 7.0 that I've had for years, but that was prior to installing Production Premium CS5. Could that have caused an issue? I read that uninstalling an old Photoshop can cause problems like this.
If that is the case, how do I fix it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running Production premium CS5 with windows7 64 bit system. On right clicking the file in explorer,I am able to choose my default programme in which the file is to be opened and it is opening accordingly.
I have Cs4 photoshop in another system with XP professional and here also the above option is available.I wonder how u will not have that feature or how it will not work inspite of having it.___Bosu Babu

Does Photoshop CS5, 6, or CC allow slicing with layer comps?

I love the layer comps feature. It's a huge time saver and allows me to keep my files sizes smaller.
One thing I just noticed since I normal hand off my PSDs to a developer is that the slices don't save with each layer comp. Is there any way to make this possible with CS5, 6, or CC even? It'd be a huge time saver and really helpful. I currently use CS5 at work, but I have CC at home.

Personally, if I were in your shoes I would subscribe to the CC photographer bundle. It sounds like you're really ready to jump into it with a great new camera so why learn and work in an outdated application?
Don't get me wrong . . . I have CS5 also, but I got the photographer bundle because it's such a great deal and I love always having the very latest version of PS. I should also emphasize that the bundle includes Lightroom, which will be invaluable to you as a photographer.
In summary, PS CS5 is still a great app but it's reached "end of life." Photoshop CC on the other hand is always being updated . . . at no extra cost. Camera Raw for PS CC, for example, is currently at v. 8.7.1. Whenever you might read about some great new feature in PS you can check it out at lynda.com and rest assured that you will have access to it when you update. There is one caveat: you don't say what you have for a computer and OS but you want to be sure to check system requirements for PS CC: System requirements | Photoshop

Photoshop CS5 crashes when trying to print after updating to Lion

My ps cs5 printed fine until I updated to Lion. Now when I try to print PS crashes everytime. I uninstalled PS CS5 and reinstalled that didn't work. Then I downloaded a driver update for HP printers and that didn't work. So now I don't know what to do. I have a HP photosmart C8180 printer.

Fixed my own problem. I just updated to the latest version of CS5 to 12.0.4 and now I'm printing.

Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 (64 Bit) trial issue with license agreement

when i click on accept in the adobe software license agreement the window disappears for a few seconds then reappears aking me to accept the agreement again.
I am running Windows 7 Home premium
