Has the mpeg2 codec improved alot in DVD SP?

I've been using DVD SP since version 1.
I did alot of work with v.1, v 1.5, and v.2
I remember the mpeg2 encoder was crap back in v1 and by v2 it started to improve.
I didn't encode anything with v3 of DVD SP, used another encoder then.
Now I encoded a few hours worth with DVD SP 4, and the quality seem to have improve alot! Or my monitor I use today is alot better then the one I used back then!
Anyone got info on codec improvements?

has apple's codec improved since dvdsp 1, 1.5 and 2?
YES!
why, in 2001, they bought spruce technologies and with that, their personel. before this, from what I understand, compressor algorithms were not that solid (albeit the spec was finalized, but apple was JUST getting into DVD).
with the aquisition of spruce, they revamped dvd studio and compressor, added a.pack (not saying this was directly the result of spruce) and made the GUI friendlier, therefore it appealled to the masses more (easier to use [prosumer]).
bottom line, they bought a DVD company, and it payed off!
the only thing that is confusing is WHY they DO NOT implement hardware encoders or accelarators (like the mpx3000 board).
but i have to agree with davis, i have come across people that loko at bit-rates of < 4 and the "love" the quality. others that have > 7 and STILL are not happy with their results.. so quality is VERY subjective. but i guess ot eahc their own.
also keep in mind that the hardware to which compressor has run has greatly improved.
so i think it is several factors, and it's just going to improve.

  • Has the 3D performance improved?

I'll like to see if/how the 3d performance has improved. Is it faster with FX?
Of course it will be faster in native, but has the time come for 3D fps applets? Or is it "only" the construction time of the code that's better?
I'm not a C fanatic and I mean not disrespect. I love Java. I just really what to know!

You might want to take a look at jmonkeyengine:
    http://www.jmonkeyengine.com/
I think it runs ontop of LWJGL but can use another rendering engine aswell (like jogl). Not sure if it would be dificult to make it run in a JavaFX app...

  • Has the sound quality improved with the new ipods?

i have a new 80 gig ipod that sounds much better then the one i bought 3 years ago.
did apple improve the sound quality?

The audio quality has improved as Apple have been using different processors in the newer 5G iPods. I have noticed an increase in quality, however, a lot of people have also said the quality has deteriorated but I believe its up to the individuals perspective.

  • Has the download performance improved of late

Before I buy any more movies or TV shows from iTunes, I would like to know if the download performance is now at an acceptable level (at least 15MB / minute). If you've made a rental or purchase in the last 24 hours, and the download performance was such that you could start watching within a minute of the purchase, please let me know.

In the interest of fair disclosure --- download performance is now back to normal. I'm currently downloading a number of TV shows at 3.1 MB / sec, which is the max my broadband can deliver.

  • Why after optimising media (AVCHD) does the info tab say the codec is the native codec and not ProRes 422?

I optimise media from AVCHD and the Transcoded Media files are created in the events folder in the finder. However, after importing has finished, I click on a clip in FCP X and then click on the info tab to see that the clip has the original codec. Therefore I guess I am not editing in ProRes. How can I switch?

What's pointing to the original media? What folder is it in? Is there a Transcoded Media folder? Does it contain a High Quality Media folder?

  • Problems with mpeg2 codec for quicktime

I just downloaded the mpeg2 codec for quicktime and installed it. My computer doesn't recongnize it and I still can't play mpeg2 clips. When I check the video codecs installed on my computer, the mpeg2 codec doesn't appear in the list even if I did install it. I'm using windows XP. What can I do?

The QuickTime MPEG2 Component comes with an installer. Did the installer run? Did it show any errors?
It is working for me in QuickTime on Windows XP.
Note: Even with this component there are some limitations. It cannot play AC3 sound tracks. It should however be able to play MPEG2 video from .m2v or .vob or .mpg files.

  • My question is the my daughter has an ipod touch with alot of music and games on it, but the computer that had itunes in it and all the apps and music is now gone. How can I transfer all her games and music her new computer without loosing her stuff?

My daughter has an ipod touch with alot of games and music on it. The computer it was synced to is forever gone and on her new computer some of the games dont show up along with her music. She is worried if she connects it to her new computer all will be lost. Is there anyway for this to not happen? The ipod is on its last life due to a cracked screen, and as for the games she has spent money on them such as smurf village and others. When i looked at game center on my phone about less than half of that game showed up. Is there anyway to fix these things before its to late and eveything is gone forever?
    THANK YOU.

You're not dealing with your typical DVD-Video data structure with a SONATA_VOLUME.  This type of data structure is designed to prevent someone from extracting the data and it's very effective at doing so.  You've probably already found that the applications that allow you to copy, extract and convert the standard DVD-Video data structure (a "VIDEO_TS" volume) will not work with a SONATA_VOLUME (apps like Toast, MactheRipper and Handbrake).
While making a digital copy is pretty much not an option with a SONATA_VOLUME, capturing the video and sound via an analog to digital capture usually works just fine.  Of course, that's not nearly as simple as popping the disc into your computer and a drag and drop or just clicking "convert" or "extract" and waiting for the copy or conversion to finish.
Do you have any video hardware for capturing analog video?  A MiniDV camcorder will do the trick if your Mac has a FireWire port.  You'll also need video capture software.  I'd recommend a version of iMovie that supports DV-NTSC, Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro.
My Sony DVD recorder creates SONATA_VOLUMES while my Panasonic DVD recorder creates VIDEO_TS folders.  The Sony is unplugged and sitting in the corner.

I have downloaded a movie which has the extension .m4v.  This will not play on my DVD player and I can't find software to convert it to a more universal format.  Can anyone help?

If you've bought a film from iTunes then you can only copy it to a DVD or CD for backup purposes, you won't be able to watch it on a stand-alone DVD player.

I am not a computer savy person.  I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.
Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback.

My iPhoto "share" drop down menu no longer has the burn dvd option.  What do I do?

That feature was dropped with iPhoto 9.  Select the photos you want to burn to disk, export to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  menu, insert a blank disk in the optical dirive, drag the folder onto the disk icon and drag it to the Trash bin to burm.

Yeah...in United States...everything is back up...but still a little creaky and slow.

  • Why is it taking 2hours to download a movie. I have 11MB...it should take 2 to 3 minutes. Anyone has an answer to improve the speed?

My apple tv is slow to download a movie. I have 11MB...it should take 2 to 3 minutes if that long. The Movie apps on my blu ray are almost instant. Anyone has an answer to improve the speed?

I have a 50x5 Mbit cable business class modem in my house (doing that give me priority bandwidth over other residences).... The most I EVER get from the iTunes Store is 4-5MBytes/sec (about 35 Mbits)... Usually I get 1-2 MBytes/sec to iTunes or any device
    My guesses are
    1) Apple just doesn't have the bandwidth during certain times
    2) I notice they throttle accounts. If I download an entire hd season, I start out fast, the it slows after a few hrs... Im guessing apple has a max data cap per day then slows you down.
