Has Time Machine really not backed up my iPhoto???
A book project is mysteriously missing from my iPhoto (9), so I thought I'd try to restore it from my Time Machine backup. However, when I selected Browse Backups from the File menu, there doesn't appear to be any previous versions of iPhoto available to scroll through and select from. (The menus floating off into the distance are empty and selecting different backup dates does nothing.)
This makes me wonder if it's been backing up my iPhoto at all?
Am I really stuck with no backups of iPhoto? (and therefore screwed out of retrieving this mysteriously missing project) or am I missing something here?
(And yes, I know there's historically a problem of iPhoto not backing up to TM when iPhoto is open but I very rarely use iPhoto so I don't think this is the case. And even if it had happened occasionally, that doesn't explain why there's not a single iPhoto back-up from the ten months I've been using TM.)

Under some circumstances, you may not see some prior backups that way.
One, oddly enough, can be the format of your Computer Name (even if you kept the one OSX assigned by default): http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/21208.html
Others may be caused by Time Machine starting a new "sequence" of backups, or replacing your internal HD. Try the procedures in #E2 and #E3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
You may need to start from the Finder, not iPhoto, to find the backups. The downside of that is, you can't see individual photos that way, but you should be able to restore the entire iPhoto library.

Thanks again Ivan for the article, it alerted me to otherwise incomprehensible changes in iPhoto/Time Machine operation such as in my case would transfer 3.8GB of data to restore a single photo, while apparently loosing all photos added after that backup time.
However the article says:
When using iPhoto ’11 (version 9.2 or later) and Time Machine with OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later), iPhoto no longer has the Browse Backups option. This means that instead of restoring specific photos within your iPhoto Library, you must restore your entire iPhoto Library.
This may be practically true but it is technically false.
To restore a single photo in iPhoto '11 with Time Machine it goes something like this:
Start with your Time Machine hard drive and navigate many steps (including showing package contents where necessary) all the way through to the photo/date you want. Drag it to your desktop. (Do not make any edits in Time Machine!) Import to iPhoto. Click on last import in iPhoto. Right click the photo and change the event name, then look for it at the right date in iphoto with the new event name.
Hopefully those with more time and patience can check this out and see what it can do. I had to do it twice with Apple suport senior tech to get it. What a pain compared to iPhoto' 09 but at least now I can restore iPhoto library or a photo if necessary.

Time Machine is not backing up...
Hi, I have a 27" iMac (mid-2011) and now Time Machine is not backing up. Actually I had turned it off, then forgot about it...so it was off for about 2 months. I read on some of these forums, when you do that...TIme Machine can be stuck in the "Preparing to Back up" phase for quite some time. To just let it go and it would be fine. But after several days, I have given up. It has not backed up in over a week now. Just spinning "Preparing to Back Up" only. Any suggestions what I should do? I have OS X Lion (10.7.3) and using a external HDD connected via USB (NOT Time Capsule).

Time Machine/Capsule not backing up
Time Machine is not backing up to my Time Capsule and I can't figure out what is wrong. The error message just states that it did not back up and has not since April 26. I looked through all of Pondini's troubleshooting site and have not found anything applicable. I installed the Time Machine Buddy Widget and this is the error message that I am getting:

When I looked at the AirPort Utility I noticed that the latest update occurred right after the most recent successful backup. The version is 6.0. My operating system is 10.7.3. Here was how I tested the problem, I don't know why TM stop doing backup folder
1) Import some new pictures from camera to iphoto library --> FINE , I can view the new imports in iphoto and also I can find the copies of imported files under iphoto Library/Originals (by Show package content)
2) I closed iphoto and I manually ask TM to backup.
3) After TM is done, I go to backup in TM, all newly imported photos are missing in the
TM backup which I just created 5 min ago.!!
No matter what, Apple need to fix this bug!!! How many people lost their precious data
because iphoto & TM???? I will go back to 3rd party software to manually import photos
and manage photos. You never know what's next bug and the result is very serious.
I knew someone lost the whole year photos. !!! Be cautious!!!!!!

Any thoughts on how to find the 6 months of photos that are missing? Only thing I can think of is that iphoto started saving the new photos in a new library. Is that possible? If so where would I find it in my TM back ups?
I really dislike Apple right now... I thought they never crashed. -
Time Machine will not back up external photo drive
Time Machine will not back up external photo drive, slightly different format, one case sensitive the other not. How do I resolve. Bought new external drive same format as TM in the hope that I could copy the files from photo drive but that will not copy all files as it is saying file already there. Again the case sensitive issue...
Paranoid about losing 1Tb of photos all cataloged in LR5
Possible solutions I have looked at but not yet tried.
Use the new 2Tb drive to make a new TM backup then reformat the old 4Tb drive the same as Photo drive.
Then do a complete backup of all files and photodrive to TM.
A lot of work, USB 2, so if any one has a simpler answer I would love to hear.

What message did you get? You should never change permissions (or anything else) on a Time Machine drive -- TM does that for you.

It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results. -
Since I upgraded my iMac,my time machine is not backing up automatically to my time capsule since my upgrade to Moutain Lion.
I have a similar problem. On my iMac, I swapped out (at Genius Bar) my HD via Seagate replacement program. Ever since my time machine won't backup. I get a error msg that says:
Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "[my time machine name]"
The backup disk is not available.
Any suggestions.

Time machine will not back up to time capsule
Time machine will not back up to my Time Capsule on my MacPro running SnowLeopard. Error message says it cannot access the backup file. I have reset the TC, and erased the drive and I get the same error on initial backup. I can see the volume and drag files to it, so the disk appears OK. What's going on here?
Depending on exactly what message you get, you might need #C17 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten
Plug the power cord back in
This will "fix" things about 98% of the time. Post back if you are in the unlucky 2% category. -

MAC OSX 10.5.8 and 2TB Time Machine would not back up. Saw discussion that suggested you change name without apostrophes etc. Went into Time Machine and did a manula backup without a name and it appears to be backing up now. Does this remove delete the old backup's ?

Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that doesn't help, repair your backups, per #A5 there.

If you have tried the fixes in Pondini's Time Machine Troublshooting, specifically #C12 and nothing helps, then it is time to let one of the genius types at an Apple Store take a look.

When I click on the My Passport Edge for Mac, I see that it has alias for each file. How do I delete the alias in order to backup my Time Machine???You do not ever delete anything on the Time Machine drive using the Finder.
Those Alias files are essential to the internal operation of Time machine, and is what allows it to keep only one copy of a file that appears, unmodified, in multiple Backup Sets. If you modify them in any way, you risk Time Machine losing ALL your data.
I expect your backup drive is simply not large enough to do what you are trying to do.

Your best short term solution may be to start a new backup, which will be smaller that the multiple backups on your existing drive. In the long run a Drive 2.5 to 3 times the size of what you want to backup is recommended.
