Has TM deleted everything?

I believe I may have hit that one Time Machine scenario where as a user I've done everything properly to ensure my data is backed up, but Time Machine has (maybe) left me with no copies.  I'm part way thru my investigation and I'm desperately seeking some "no, there's no way it would do that" opinions to calm my panicking mind
Here's the story so far.
I have a late 2009 iMac running Lion with a 1TB drive in it, backing up to a Time Machine external drive.  About 2 months ago, I got hold of a 256GB SSD and replaced the optical drive with it, and now the SSD is my bootable OSX volume.  The "old" hard drive is still in the machine and contains amongst other things my very valuable and large Aperture library (~400GB) and iTunes library (~100GB).  When I first started using the SSD as the boot drive, Time Machine got a little bit confused and started telling me it couldn't back up, which was fair enough because the volumes had changed around a bit.  Anyway I thought it was a good enough time to temporarily retire the old Time Machine backup and as I had another spare 1.5TB drive laying around I brought that in and told Time Machine to use it.  I made sure to specify that I wanted not only the new SSD but also the old 1TB drive which contained those photo & music libraries.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, Apple sent me a product recall notice saying some of those 1TB drives have been failing and they'd replace it for free.  I rang the shop where I bought it and they said that the fact that I'd put the new SSD drive in (and voided Applecare) didn't matter and they'd still be happy to replace the drive because this was a product recall which is outside of Applecare.  (I thought that was mighty nice of them and an example of why I've bought 3 Macs there - Macworx Joondalup Western Australia, great guys).  Anyway I was about to take it in and then last night the 1TB drive died completely.  It no longer even shows up in Finder or Disc Utility.
As I was discovering this, I noticed the Time Machine icon spinning up the top of the screen and clicked it and it said "Deleting old backups".  Aaaaagh!  I stopped it immediately but I don't know what it had already deleted.  I've found on google that the default behaviour of Time Machine is that if the state of your Volumes changes, i.e. a drive is added or removed, that Time Machine will delete all old backups and start again with a fresh drive.  Which means now that my hard drive has died, then it is wanting to delete the backups of that hard drive.  Please tell me this is not so.
I navigated in Finder to the Time Machine drive and found that the last 2 backups don't contain my Aperture library, and there is one single backup before that which does have an Aperture library… I don't know how big this file (folder/package) is because I had to rush off to work where I am now, so I can't verify whether it's still intact.  Either way I probably don't want to touch that drive until I have the new one in the Mac.  But oh boy am I panicking.  I have the backup on the old retired backup drive, but that's 2 months old and since then we've added a heap of photos, including since the birth of our daughter 3 weeks ago.
Can anyone enlighten me on what Time Machine is likely to do when a backed up non-system drive like my 1TB one dies?  Please tell me that the default is not that it will immediately delete backups of it.
After this, I'm definitely investing in Crashplan or similar.

Not so (as long as there's room on your TM drive).
Each drive is backed-up separately.  Once a drive is no longer connected, of course it won't be backed-up anymore, but the old backups aren't deleted automatically or immediately.
However, when the TM drive does get full, and TM has to start deleting old backups, sooner or later, it will delete the last remaining backup of the missing drive.
If you replace a drive, it will probably be treated as a new one (depending on the circumstances), and be backed-up in full on the next backup, requiring a lot of space, and, if necessary, a lot of old backups to be deleted. Thus you might lose the old backups fairly quickly.
In some circumstances, if you replace your OSX drive, Time Machine will automatically "assocate" the new drive with the old backups, so only the changes will be backed-up.  As far as I can tell, that doesn't happen automatically with a data-only drive.
Effective with Lion, however, you can manually tell Time Machine to "associate" the new data-only drive with the old backups, via the procedure in #B6 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  That's a bit tedious, unfortunately, but if you're careful, it does work.

Correct.  It will not immediately delete the backups.
You may not see them easily via the Time Machine browser, however, as you normally start from a folder on an existing drive, then Enter Time Machine to display the backups of that folder.  Since the drive in question is not present, you can't start from it.  Unfortunately, Apple doesn't make it clear how to do that, but the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting should work.

Your old ID connects to an icloud account containing all your data (email, contacts, etc.)  If you then use a different ID, you will connect to a different account, which results in losing all your "apple" data, like emails, contacts, calendars, etc.
However, Apple IDs are also used to connect to an itunes store account, with is different.  You can keep using the old itunes store ID to keep all your purchases (but if you change to a different ID, you will lose all purchased items) and use the new ID for icloud (but losing emails, contacts, etc. from the old account).

She has never synced her ipod touch to iTunes, any suggestions of how to get around the password without deleting everything she has on the device?  Apple support recommended recovery mode, but doesn't that erase everything on the ipod?

You are out of luck but a Date Recovery company may be able to help if the iPod does not have iOS 8.
If there is an iCloud backup you can restore from that.

Your Solid State Drive and having enough space inside your Macbook Air & Pro
Solid State Drive usage premise, or the “more space / upgrade SSD” question
There have been questions posed and positions taken by many people who are trying to use their Macbook Air or Pro’s solid state drive (SSD) as a mass media storage device, for either pictures, videos, massive music collections or all three combined; but this should not be the working premise of a ‘limited’ SSD and its use.
In which, it’s the case of those users with either 128GB, 256GB, or even 512GB of internal SSD space, that have or are running “out of space”, that questions are raised. The immediate premise of some users can sometimes be “(how to / if) upgrading my SSD” when in fact in nearly all instances another approach is the logical and sensible one that needs to be looked into and exercised.
Any Macbook containing a SSD should be idealized as a ‘working platform’ notebook containing all your applications, documents, and weekly or bi-weekly necessary files. All collections of media files such as pictures, music, and videos, unless directly needed should be kept off the notebook and on an external hard drive or likewise. While the ‘working platform’ premise is also the case with larger internal conventional hard drives of 1TB+, its implementation isn't as critical except in terms of data protection.
Realistically, you should at most coordinate roughly 20 to 25% of your total SSD space to all audio-video personal use media (picture / music / video collections), leaving the remaining amount on an external HD.
Nobody should consider any notebook a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device; and in the case of a SSD, this is more important for purposes of having sufficient working space on the SSD and reducing SSD ‘bloat’ in which cases someone is wrongly attempting to use the SSD space as a large media storage nexus.
The rare exception to the collective usage and premise of SSD use in which a much larger SSD is truly needed are for those in video and photography professions that require both the extremely fast speeds of the SSD and the onboard storage for large and or many video and photography files. However this also falls under the premise of a ‘working platform’ for such peoples rather than the intent of many who are using the SSD as passive and static data storage for media files very infrequently needed or accessed.
All on-notebook data collections should be logically approached as to necessity, and evaluated as to whether it is active or passive data that likely doesn’t need to be on the notebook, allocations of space-percentages to as-needed work and use, apportioning space for your entertainment media, and questioning whether it should it be on the notebook for more than short-term consumption.
Considerations should be made in the mind of any user in differentiating the necessary system data (System hub) comprising the Mac OSX, applications, necessary documents that both must and should be on your internal SSD, and that of the users personal data (Data hub) comprising created files, pictures, music, videos, PDF files, data created or being created and otherwise, that likely unless being used soon or often should be parked on an external hard drive for consumption, or temporarily loading onto the internal SSD.
You both can and should purchase whichever SSD size you need or see fit, but even in the case of the largest of SSD, unless use-considerations are made, and SSD spaces are allocated as should be the case indicated above, one can easily and immediately run into this quandary of “needing more internal SSD space”, in which instance a different approach in usage must then be implemented.
However it is almost always the case, that such large media files are wanted to be stored internally rather than actually needed, in which case the external HD is both prudent as well as necessary. Additionally costs per MB are infinitely less on an external HD than an internal SSD in any consideration of data expansion needs.
    A Professional Example
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.
You should also never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your Macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’. This is especially what your external HD is for.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their notebooks internal SSD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your Macbook has a SSD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your notebook to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Slim USB3 1TB external hard drive
    External Hard Drives
External hard drives are both extremely cheap and regardless of the size of your internal SSD (or even internal hard drive if the case), you need an external hard drive with your SSD equipped Macbook for several reasons:
    1. Data backup and protection.
    2. Redundancy for important data.
    3. Necessitated ideal space for large media files for collections of pictures, videos, and music etc.
While ever changing in price, typical portable 2.5” external hard drives in USB3 run roughly $65 for 1TB or $120 for 2TB small portable USB3 hard drives. Such drives range in thickness between 5mm and 15mm, with recent improvements in storage of 500GB drives in 5mm profiles.
There is almost no premise in which a small 12mm thick 1 Terabyte USB hard drive cannot be taken along with any Macbook as an external large storage extension inside any Macbook carry case or pouch. Typically such external HD profiles are not much bigger than a deck of cards.
External hard drives are a foregone necessity for purchase with any Macbook for at the very least Time Machine backups, data redundancies, and ideally for large media storage.

Why has my iCloud calendar deleted everything from 31st august back to beginning of the year but everything from 1st September is still there! All the information was there this morning and now it's all gone!!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.

  • My iphone 5 has been deleting my calendar. This is the third time- now it deletes my contacts, notes and reminders as well. Why is it doing this, and how can I restore everything?

My iPhone 5s has been deleting my calendar. First time, just the calendar, then next time the calendar and contacts, then yesterday, calendar, contacts, notes and reminders. The phone is only 6 months old or so and is on iOS 7.1.2 (although I need to update it- but have to do some storage management first...)
I have looked at my calendar in my icloud account and it is a week or so out of date, even though it supposedly backed up from my phone on Friday. I am becoming very frustrated by this. Am I doing something wrong? Advice would be much appreciated. In the past I have deleted my icloud account from my phone and then re-signed in, as well as sharing my calendar with myself to restore it, and it works eventually.

Sorry I misstyped- it is an iphone 4s.

  • Why has my library deleted everything after installing 7.6 upgrade?

Having transferred all my music - album by album (1500 tunes) to my new computer from my old one, I have just downloaded the 7.6 upgrade and ALL my music library has been deleted from i-Tunes.
I had an earlier deletion last week when I tried to transfer all my music from my i-Pod to my new computer, This resulted in ALL the music on my i-Pod being deleted.
Do I now have to start all over again by manually transferring all my albums back into i-tunes?
    Grateful for any advice.

Try holding down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\. Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • My photoshop won't open, it says that the preferences file has been deleted. What do I do?

I was just working in my photoshop with no problems, I had just downloaded a free trial pluggin (Filter Forge) but that wasn't working, so I tried to close photoshop to re open it and it wasn't responding so I had to force quit it, and when I went to reopen it this box pops up..... "Could not initialize photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted)" I looked up how to fix this and I went under the library on my MAC to try and find the preferences file to move it because they said that would help, well I forgot.....the file has somehow been deleted. My other option that I haven't tried yet is to open photoshop and do the shortcut keys that resets everything but Im nervous to do that because I don't know what will get reset. Any help will be awesome I have several projects Im working on and need to finish!
    Thanks

If you have not saved your custom presets for some time you should naturally lose those when opening with cmd-alt-shift pressed and selecting to "delete settings file" – but you can consider this a learning experience.
Apart from the presets you also need to set your Preferences (Interface, Performance, …) again after that if you had in any way changed them from the default settings.

I had alot of bookmarks and passwords on my firefox sync. However, I rebooted my computer a few days ago and now when I clicked on "Merge sync data" my data still does not appear and it seems like everything has been deleted. Can I restore this data?

I have tried restoring it but it only shows dates for the last 5 days which doesn't help. I rebooted my computer (formatted hard drive and reinstalled windows) a few days ago so any backup files in my computer are gone. I thought that there are backup copies made on the Firefox server but obviously I was wrong!
I don't see the point of Firefox sync if you can't view your bookmarks etc online and if there aren't backups made on the server.
