Has your MacBook Air gone dark, gone to sleep, inactive without warning?

A couple of times, my new MacBook Air just shut off, gone black, won't wake up, nothing works, trying trackpad, space bar, opening/closing screen, pressing i/o button .... then after a while holding i/o button finally restarts.
is this a screen connection issue?
a sleep issue
something else?
anyone else experience this?
thanks

Yes, mine has done this, been in for substantial repairs that have not worked with no known cause so there is no remedy.
Mine has been returned for a refund as it cannot be fixed.
I encourage you and any others with the same experience to return them for a refund and wait a few months/years until Apple sort it out.
This will not be a simple process, Apple are going to have to work hard to work out which piece or pieces of hardware are to blame, so take it back as they may never resolve it.
There's a group on Fa ceb ook, search for MacBook Air screen goes black, that I encourage you all to join as Apple are starting to remove posts from forums like this.
Apple removed this post, "because it contained non-constructive rants or complaints," does anyone else agree?

  • Has your Macbook Air overheating problems been solved?

    Hi All,
Has there been a solution to the Macbook Air overheating problem for you?
I'm considering selling my MBA but want to see first if there has been any new updates on this issue.
I have a Macbook Air with the specifications as follows:
Model: MacBook Air 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Production year: 2008
    Production week: 15 (April)
    OS X Version 10.5.7
Have had the computer for about a year now and it has been constantly overheating and becoming more or less unusable when doing so. Have been hoping upgrades to the software would solve this eventually but that does not seem to have happened.
As I'm writing this room temperature is about 20 degrees celcius. Laptop sits on a table with power cable plugged in. Not running any external screen. There is no video streaming or music playing. Only the Firefox browser and a few more idle apps are active such as Mail and Skype (in the background). Even under these conditions the fan is currently running loud at 6100rpm and the Macbook Air is very hot underneath.
CPU temperature is currently 54 degrees Celsius. Both cores seem to be active.
Now, as an experiment I will head over to YouTube to watch a video and open up Microsoft Word in the background, a perfectly normal usage for a computer this new. This is what happens:
The computer starts to become painfully slow. After for example clicking an item in the browser there is a 1-3 second delay before the click actually becomes effective. It's now so hot underneath that I would not want to keep it in my lap. It is hard to use the mouse pointer properly as it does not update in realtime, I have to assume where it will land based on my movements. When scrolling, the spinning wheel icon becomes active. Everything is now happening in slow motion.
Video is lagging heavily. I can only see probably 1 out of every 10 frames or less of the video. All applications running are very slow. CPU temperature is now 64 degrees celsius. Fan is at 6200. Computer is now unusable for me. When I scroll a page in the browser it takes about 2-3 seconds before anything happens. Changing tabs takes 5-6 seconds after I click them. I will have to shut it down before re-starting and resuming work. When room temperature is even higher on a hot day needless to say everything gets a lot worse quicker.
Is this normal for Macbook Air's? If that is the case they are more or less unusable for most types of normal 2009 year usage (video, audio, browsing, office work etc).
What solutions have you found? Coolbook? Software/Firmware updates? Hardware changes? Please let me know if you have been able to make your MBA not overheat under normal usage.

    Hi Everybody,
Thanks for your replies to start with.
I have tried to install Coolbook now and has it running. When using 'throttling' and letting it change CPU speeds (I think..) the problem still remains. When watching a video or other demanding task the temperature goes way up. Running a CPUTest (small or big) gets CPU temperatures of up to 84-85 C. Fan of course at 6200rpm all the time.
Right now, I have Coolbook set to 800Mhz and 0.9V. Apps running are Firefox, Skype, Mail and iTunes with no audio playing. CPU temperature at 56 c and fan speed (as usual) at 6200rpm. I can use the computer now. It is still lagging and not very fast at all. Sometimes text appear 1-2 seconds after I have written it on the keyboard.
So Coolbook has made a difference for me, but only when putting the CPU speed down to 800MHz. I wouldn't call reducing the CPU speed to half a 'solution' though and will not keep that as a long term solution. Reducing voltages for higher CPU-speeds 0.9875V for 1600MHz does not work, it still heats up massively.
Have used the MBA for the whole day today and can't recall a single time the fan has not been around 6200rpm except right after boot.
Thanks for the tips on upgrading to 10.5.8. I will try that right away and let you know how it works out.
Have also considered buying some cooling device but just as you say that feels like a bit of a last thing to resort to.
I'm surprised Apple hasn't responded stronger to this. Had this happened in the car industry we would have seen thousands of cars being sent back to the garage to be fixed.
If this only has to do with some specific production weeks then the right thing to do would be for Apple to let those people have their computers either fixed or replaced.

  • My Macbook Air (circa ~2008, used) keeps shutting off without warning.

Hi, guys. I'm back again with the same issue. My aluminum Macbook Air (circa late 2008, used) keeps shutting off without warning. It comes back on as if nothing has happened, and I can even unplug as soon as I press the power button (twice, once to do...something, and the second to turn it back on). I have a brand new battery, so I know it's not that, nor is it an overheating issue. This is becoming very frustrating for me.
Before you recommend: I cannot possibly get to a Genius Bar appointment, because, unfortunately, Apple has no stores in West Virginia.
Thank you all for your help!

And have you already tried to reinstall the OS and you put in a new battery?
cant be monitor or fan, only possibility is onboard Ram / logic board or the SSD is going bad.
If the logic board / memory is bad,...the cost of which  would make repair a bit counterintuitive to replace given the age of the unit.
Does it does this plugged in or only on battery?  Does it hold a full charge.

    Hey kbert73
I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

  • Macbook air doesn't wake from sleep

Since upgrading recently to Snow Lion my late 2010 Macbook Air won't wake from sleep mode. I have a second monitor. After sleeping I hbave to hit the ctrl-alt-power to get it to boot up which is does as a normal cold start. I have power sleep turned off. Ideas?

Later today I disconnnected my 17 inch monitor and put the mAcbook Air to sleep from the Applpe menu. 1st thing, it didn't want to go to sleep. Finally it did. About 3 hiours later I opened the lid or hit space (I forget which) and the screen lit up to where I had left it.
That woukld seem to suggest that somethihng is going on with the monitors preferences, or whatever, as before updating to Mountain Lion I had no sleep problems. What now? Reinstall Mountain Lion or?
    TIA, BIll

  • Has anyone upgraded your MacBook Air SSD? Is it possible?

Just out of curiosity, Can you upgrade your SSD? Have any of you upgraded your SSD in your Mid 2012 MacBook Air? If so, what did you use and how much can the 2012 Air SSD take?
    THANKS

This is what I found below on the OWC site. My Macbook Air is 5,2 and it says that it is compatible.  I checked the video and looks pretty straight forward. I am just looking for what people's experiences were and what the outcome was... Has anyone upgraded their SSD to 1TB? Good or bad idea?

  • Who has a MacBook Air from Refurbished products source?  Good or Bad?

What has been your experience? Is there anything I need to be aware of if I order a refurbished MacBook Air. My experience with other refurbished Apple products has been 100% satisfaction.

I bought a refurb Air the first day they appeared on apple.com. It has been fantastic; I haven't seen any of the common problems talked about here. I can get one of the cores to shut down, say after a while of ichat video, but I haven't noticed that the system becomes especially slow when that happens. My only complaint is that my trackpad button doesn't like to stay clicked without a fair bit of force *in the center*. Next time I'm in a city with an Apple store I'll check that out.
I'm wondering if maybe refurb isn't the way to go -- perhaps an overheating unit that got some special attention from an Apple serviceperson that reapplied just the right amount of thermal paste?

  • What do you think of your MacBook Air

I'm going to be purchasing a new computer most likey in early 2009. I would like to know if I should consider the MacBook Air?
If those of you who have purchased them could give me some feedback on what your experience has been, I'd appreciate it. Below is a general outline of how I use my computer.
I've been a MacUser since 1986. I currently have an iBook G4 (the one with the 12" screen)running the latest version of Tiger. Portablity is a strong issue with me, but not as much as it once was. I've used an iMac with a 24 inch screen and I have to say I'm tempted. All that screen real estate.
I'm a writer and use my computer primarily for word processing. My main program is Movie Magic Screenwriter 2000. I'm concerned about how this program will run on the MBA. (If anyone has used it on a MBA please chime in.) I also use MS Word, Google Docs, Quiken, iPhoto and iWeb a lot.
I have a huge iTunes library and I store all my music, photos, and video on an external hard drive. The hard drive on my iBook is 30gig. My externals are a LaCie 350gig firewire and a WD 350gig USB, which I will be returning shortly as it does not function properly with my Mac. I will be doing more image processing in the future.
I read my news and do a lot of reseach on the internet via a high-speed wireless connection.
I never upgrade my laptops. I buy what I can afford, add memory right away, keep it for five years and then replace it. I only use a laptop.
Lastly, I'm not rich. Do you think it's worth the extra money to purchase the MBA or should I stick with a MacBook Pro. Or is there something new around the corner?

I have, at one point or another, had every major laptop; Toshiba's Porteges, IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpads, Sony Vaios and Macbook Pros of various generations.
While there are clear limitations to the Air, it is by far my favorite light-weight laptop I have ever owned. In fact, it is at Apple repair right now (a problem with the track pad) and I am back to my Macbook Pros and my 3Lb Sony Vaio. The Macbook Pros feel like tanks compared to the Air and I remeber how much I hated the small screen and keyboard of the highly rated Vaio. I really, really miss my Air and that is a true sign that, for me, Apple created an indispensable little computer.
A couple of thoughts on the stated cons; do not let the lack of ports and DVD drive turn you away. The one USB port is just fine for 99% of what you will likely do with the machine and unless you want to play DVDs (instead of downloaded content), this is such a non-issue.
The only often stated con that I have learned to deal with is the non-replaceable battery. But I am consistently getting 4+ hours of battery life and most of my longer flights have empower ports.
The other cons that do not get a lot of play are (1) the lack of built in mobile data and (2) the relatively small hard drive. For now, I am relegated to a USB data card. I would hope as Apple launches the 3G iPhone, we will see that chip set integrate into the next gen air. I am sure we will also see higher capacity drives.
These cons are outweighed by the large screen, great keyboard and multi-touch trackpad.
All in all, if you need a light weight computer that you will take everywhere, the Air is one terrific machine.

  • Can you use iPhone ear buds microphone with your MacBook Air?

If you use your ear buds to listen to your Facetime conversations, are also using the microphone on them to talk?

Yes you can. Any headset compatible with the iPhone works just fine for full duplex conversation on a MacBook Air of current design. The microphone and earphones are simultaneously active.

  • Macbook air wifi keeps dropping after sleep

This is driving me crazy. I have tried so many fixes but nothing has worked. Every time I hibernate / sleep my 2012 macbook air, the wifi drops and takes at least 20 minutes to come back on when I open the laptop again.
I can reboot, turn the wifi off and on, change preferences...everything. Nothing works. From reading around I am assuming this is a Maverick problem since lots of people seem to be complaining about the same thing, but has anyone found something to remedy it?
    Thanks x

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
    Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
    Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
    Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.
