Hashtable on disc
I've been looking crazy over the internet and in the forums, but haven't found any Hashtable implementation that stores on disc. Anyone know any good library for that?
Gil
Thanks all for your efforts.
As you have pinpointed it's not easy to do a hashtable on disc (why I hoped and prayed there was already something
out there so I didn't had to do it myself). But it is possible to do it myself I guess.
As to having multiple persistent hash's sharing a file...
that may be more difficult then it appears as hashes don't
have a fixed size so the second hash can't just be appended to the first in the file Not hard. I already have a class "PortionedFile" that gives me instances of "FilePortion". It is virtual files that
actually resides in only 1 physical file. It has some basic "memory handling". When a hash talbe grows, it requires
the file to grow (eg double size), and the PortionedFile finds new space (which might be caused be ealrier remove
portions) for the new file size and copies the old content to the new filespace and connects the virtual FilePortion
to that new area. Very simple algorithm but efficient and not too spacewasting (and discspace is not that much of a
problem anyway).
Probably more like a couple thousand.
I'm sure you know a file isn't like memory.
You have to implement all allocation and deallocation mechanisms.
When you remove an entry that's stored in the middle of the file
what do you do with the "hole"? Re-use it?
What will your strategy be to keep the file from becoming too fragmented?
How will you recover from errors like the app crashing halfway through a write?I have a memory handler for disc, which will be useful when allocating space for data (including variable size keys
and entries) in a similar way as memory allocation for primary memory is done (alloc in C, new in Java).
BUT! Does anyone know of a good "allocation and deallocation mechanisms" for disc? Would guess a existing solution
would not be too bad to use even if mine will "work".
closed-address hashing where each bin
(element in the internal array) is null or contains a pointer to a linked
list. Therefore to save this beasty you need to have a persistant
linkedlist implementation as well as a persistance mechanism for arrays. The hashtable implementation I was thinking of would use "closed-address hashing", Which includes "pointers" to the
list for that "hash-bin". I actually don't know if this will cause more disc-reads then "open-adress hashing". The
advantage as I can see with "closed-address hashing" is that the list for the "hash-bin" can be some kind of structure with all variable length keys and data for that list, so they all can be read in 1 single read. If more data is added to a list, the whole list will be rewritten to disc.
Trust me, I had to implement an on-disk balanced tree maps (AVL/RedBlack). It was no picnic.I know this sad truth.
I didn't understand how the ASN1 would be of any help and what matfud meant by "As for the disk format you
may wish to use somthing similar to ASN1"
Thanks again

hello asterfromscarbourough,
your Macbook Pro should have came with some discs. One for Installing the OSx and the other for applications. You must find these 2 discs to fully install the software on your computer. That is all I can suggest. -
How can I repair Vista system files with only a Toshiba recovery disc??
I have pretty much come to the conclusion that the reason I can't install Vista service pack 2 is due to some corrupt vista files. I ran the program that checks that system files and it said some are corrupt. There are some things I can't do, like turn on the Windows firewall even from that special adminostrar screen, or if I schedule a check disc scan, when I reschedule it for start up, it doesn't do it at startup. I had a Red Screen about a year ago, and it did a bunch of stuff and at the end, it said you had a major event and contact your administartor. Well, I am the administartor, lol. Anyway, it worked fine and I attribute these problems to that event.
Vista discs come with a repair option. All I have is the Toshiba disc that lets you reinstall the Toshiba and Vendor applications OR reformat the hard drive. I am not going to spend days trying to get my system back to where it is by tracking down everything I have installed especially when its working. Is there a work around? I will buy a Vista Home Premium disc if I have to before refortmatting. I have an x205-S9349 with Vista Home Premium. THANKS!Satellite X205-S9349

I got an error message while burning a CD in iTunes - "the attempt to burn a disc failed. The burn failed because of a medium write error." What does this mean and how do I fix it?
The disk you are using probably has a defect, not uncommon on consumer grade disks. Try another disk or better yet another disk from a different manufacturer or at least a different batch.

Can't sync iPod - Error Message: "disc cannot be read from or written to"
My ipod had been working fine until recently when every time I try and sync it I get the following error message:
"Attempting to copy to the disk "iPod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to"
I have tried all suggestions in Apple's support article for this issue but nothing works. Does anyone else have this problem or know how to solve it?
Thanks a lot.

Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10)
Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10)Hi all,
I am sorry to report that I too have this same disc error problem when syncing my iPod to my iTunes library. I take no comfort in knowing that I am one of many that have this same error. I checked on the iPod lounge forum and I just couldn't count the number of users that had the same problem. There are just so many!
I too have tried "5 r's" and I have also tried using a few "s" words and others...lol.
It seems like there is no "fix" for this problem but I will say this: If there is no solution, then I will no longer be buying iPods. This is my third iPod that I have purchased. Which makes my Apple investment near the thousand dollar mark. That is way too much money spent to not have a functioning music player. I will be switching to another player to see if the grass is greener on the other side.
I have been most dissappointed with this error and I will not be "recycling" this iPod for ten percent off of my next iPod purchase. -
I have an older 8GB black iPod Touch (no bluetooth) no longer supported by tech. It is "locked" in restore mode. When I do a 2 button reset I can get the Apple logo but then it pops back to the synch cord-and-music disc icon indicative of restore. Any advice?
Hello honeycrisp70,
For that error, check out the article below for additional troubleshooting to get it sorted out. If it continues then you may need to contact Apple support.

A few weeks ago I noticed my MacBook Pro was unable to open or read, etc... DVDs. This included DVDs with jpeg photos on them and DVD videos. I thought I might have deleted something necessary to DVD use. So I tried to re-install OS software. This included Snow Leopard and the original two Mac OS X discs. None would open or play or install. All were spit out of computer soon after I stuck them in.
So now what can I do? Thank you.Do you recommend the canned air
It works just as well as the regular cleaning discs works. The only disadvantage is that you will need to keep purchasing canned air once it runs out. Cleaning discs last forever or until the tiny bristles on the disc wears out. Whichever comes first.
Any store that sells cds & dvds will also sell disc cleaners. Prices vary but they all do the same thing - clean your slot drive. -

You mean, Can I still run boot camp without Windows? because that is what you will have, one empty boot camp partition. Buy a copy of Windows 7. -
Error 4260 - I can't burn a disc
Been looking for solutions all day.
When ever I try to burn something it gets to about 1/3 of the way and then ejects and gives me the 4260 error message. Using Sony CD-R Audio 80min discs. I've tried using other discs. It wasn't doing this last week. I was thinking it was the CD type, but I'm not sure. I've been told to use a reg fix.

Error:the ipod cannot be updated. the disc could not be read from or writte
May sound silly I am sorry, new to this. Just got an ipod shuffle and have gone through all troubleshooting suggestions ie: restore ipod, reinstall software etc. Am getting an error: "The ipod "administrator's ipod" cannot be updated. The disc could not be read from or written to". This occurs when I click and drag a playlist from the source section to my ipod in the source section. Getting a wee bit discouraged by reading all the problems associated with this ipod and am hoping for an easy fix to slide past further frustration. Please help. Thank you muchly.

External Hard Disc won't mount - Partition Map error. Can't repair with Disk Utility
Happy New Year all and thanks in advance for any support/advise.
I have some important data on an external drive that does not seem to want to mount. The drive is a 500 GB Seagate connected via USB. I am currently on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Yosemity 10.10.1
What I've tried:
Multiple computers - connected the drive to various apple computers with the same result.
New enclosure: I have removed the actual HD from the enclosure and connected it using a new one.
Disk Utility: Verifying Disc reports the following error: 'Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found.' Screenshot below:
I have searched this and other forums and run a few commands in Terminal that seem relevant to the issue, but am out of my depth in terms of interpreting the results. Thank again for your attention!!!
Commands run in Terminal:

diskutil cs list

If it does not, then you need to reformat the drive. And, you cannot access the volume in order to copy your data somewhere else. If you are willing to spend money on the problem, then you can always try using a software recovery utility:
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive. Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk. Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

To start at the beginning; Just under 3 years ago, my ex wife bought my daughter (then 12) an HP G56-105SA.
A year ago my daughter moved back in with me, and brought it with her.
Just the lap-top and power supply. No Recovery discs; no manuals; just the bits she used.
Last week... she had teen-age hissy-fit, because it didn't work... this became MY problem.
Of course, being ancient and obtuse and a PAIR-RENT...I am probably missing the obviouse, like that it's almost Christmas, and what she really wants is a new i-pad.... but she ent getting one... not off me least ways, so I'm stuck trying to fix this thing, so she can do her home-work, and be doubly ungreatful!
So to the facts.
1/ I started by switching it on.... which resulted in black screen and 'No Bootable Device' message.
2/ Turned PC over, undid HDD cover; removed HDD, and cable; re-seated & replaced; turned on again. No Change.
3/ Removed HDD - Plugged into spare SATA slot on my desk-top.
Curiousely, it threw up four drived;
E: which appeared to be a ghost, with nothing on and capacity of the discs full 250Gb.
F: Which was her C: Operating System partition; aprox 170Mb with all windows directories present and accessible.
M: HP Restore
N: HP Tools
As suspected... her C-Drive (My F) was chocka-block with barely 3% free space.
3.1/ I took my life in my own hands... and deleted six seasons of 'Glee'..... and transfered the less than a dongle sized directory called 'Home Work' to my desk-top. I emptied her recycle bins.
3.2/ I ran disc tools on my (Win XP) desk top; and applied Disc Clean Up. Took a while, and I dont think freed much.
3.3/ I ran disc tools....... and applied Scan Disc, full scan and fix... and 24 hours later it told me it had fixed things!
3.4/ I ran De-Frag... and another 24 hours later.. it looked reletively healthy; with about 40% free space.
4/ Returned Hard disk to Lap-Top.... pressed start.... same black screen! Pressed f2, used diagnostics; got 'Hard disc Not Exist'
5/ Asked Daughter if she had the HP Factory Restore discs..... she looked at me as only a teenager looking at ancient, obtuse, and utterly STOOOPID pair-rent can.... you know, like she had discovered something unsavory on the sole of her shoe, she had never seen before...... with added contempt.
Phone calls and text messages in her bedroom followed; the unhelpful conclusion of which was... "Mum says, you just run Recovery from the Hard Drive" ... aparently she had argued that actually when teh computer was first switched on, it would have asked to 'make' recovery DVD's.... but aparently her big-brother had sorted that all out, and said you didn't need them, as it was... on the hard drive.... Can ANYONE tell me why I married the woman? I'm SURE there must have been a reason... but for the life of my I cant think what it could have been!
6/ I returned HDD to my desk-top. I found the pdf user manual, and found the 'make restore disc' instructions & tried running the make program on my desk-top.... it refused telling me what I already knew... my desk-top isn't an HP G56!
7/ HASSLED as home-work was now due, and she couldn't print it off my Desk-Top, as I dont have the latest version of MS Office she uses at school..... I went back to basics; pulled Windows 7 install disc from the draw, went to HP support and down-loaded ALL the driver files for an HP G56-105SA...
8/ WIPED THE LAP-TOP HARD DRIVE - in XP on desk-top, removed all partitions, then re-formatted the disc, ready for 'fresh' install of Windows 7 and 7 alone, without all the HP factory pre-installs.... get it running, and then worry about installing whatever software she wants/needs after seperately; and with bit of luck, without partisions or extraniouse would-you-like-fries-with-that programs cluttering it up; might give a bit more space so takes a bit longer till its clogged with 'glee' again.
9/ Inserted HDD in Lap-Top. Switched on... opened DVD draw; switched off. Inserted Windows 7 disc; switched on.
ALL looked very promicing, and Got windows back-ground, USB mouse, and win 7 install prompts... up to "Select partition to install operating system'.
HDD showed in the drop-down box as 'Disc 0' with full 250Gb available and healthy
BUT message below "Windows 7 cannot install on this divice - Not bootable" clicking for details... said check bios to ensure HDD management enabled.
10/ Switched off, went into bios... NO options for doing anything with HDD as far as I could see; while 'system diagnostics' chucked out error message "Hard disc Not Exist"
11/ Repeated Windows install... and at prompt tried putting in DVD of down-loaded HP Drivers to load a disc controller... told me there were no drivers on the DVD ( they were all executables I presume intended to be run after Windows install)
12/ My 'data' Hard-Drive was sat on teh desk where I had removed it to plug in her lap-top disc. JUST for reference... I removed her Lap-top HDD and plugged my Desk-Top HDD in to see if the lap-top would recognise ANY disk... answer no it didn't.
SO... it would appear that the Lap-Top HDD is 'OK' we have fault on the Lap-Top, which recognises the HDD under windows install... but not under the Bios.
I found this forum looking for hints where to go next, and did find this thread: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/my-laptop-says-my-hard-disk-does-not-exi...
BUT, whils seemingly the same problem... that was fixed by my first intuative check, taking the HDD out and replacing it.... but ent solved this one.
So what next? I'm starting to run out of inspiration... and no chance is she having a new lap-top this christmas!teflon-mike wrote:
Follow the instructions on this tutorial page to make a DBAN on a usb flash drive that is at least 1GB.
OK, followed instructions; down-loaded and ran executable. Selected DBAN v2.2 from drop down as instructed (only option with DBAN in title); 2nd dialogue asked for ISO file, entered DBAN in download dir; it asked to create, clicked 'y', then selected 4GB USB flash as destination, and 'run'. Went into a command screen, and 'did-stuff' with two error messages; first saying something couldn't be found; second that DBAN 2.2 'not supported'.
Popped dongle into the Lap-top anyway; files were written to it; entered Bios and set Boot order to USB-Floppy first... returned "BootMNGR is Missing" & prompted re-start.... A USB thumbdrive (or flash disk) is not a dongle. That is a different technology for licensing firmware contained in a usb device.
So, tried & failed, BUT.. the lap-top hard drive is 'blanked' It's been scanned, formatted, un-partitioned & reformatted, and shows as a factory fresh HDD would out the packet. So do I really need to use DBAN to 'nuke' it? Yes. it is a good plan to nuke the hard disk. It sounds like you need a different tutorial than the one I provided.
then do a Windows 7 install. This time use the Microsoft store's Windows 7 DVD\USB download utility to make a usb installer.
Thanks; but I dont really want to buy another licence for an operating system (I actually dont much like!) I already have licences for, already have DVD's for, but not bought through Microsofts Down-Load platform so I dont have anything in my purchase history and so would have to buy as if new JUST to get a version that loads through a USB port.. when its loading hapily enough from DVD... just not happy to install to the HDD, its actually recognising, and I'm just as likely, I presume, to get the same problem, of it refusing to install to HDD from a new USB drive version as my existing DVD version, for the expense and trouble.... unless I'm missing a leap in the logic here?
The Microsoft DVD\USB download utility name is actually a misnomer. I don't know why Microsoft called it that. It is actually a usb installer and DVD installer creation utility. It does not require you to purchase anything. Use the license that you already have when using the USB installer during a Windows 7 installation. There is no need to buy another. Licenses are always diistinctly seperate from the installation disk(s) or ISOs. It is the same thing as a DVD installation disk except much faster.
You don't necessarily need to use an ISO image as suggested in the following video. You can also use your Windows 7 installation DVD as a source for the Windows 7 DVD\USB download tool.
Any other suggestions, any-one?

Hi,
When I insert a lightscribe DVD/CD into a lightscribe optical drive, then when I click to open the DVD, I faced this error 'How do you want to use this disc', although the DVD was full of data. When opening these
lightscribe DVD/CD via NON lightscribe optical drive, I noticed that the DVD/CD opened well without any problems at all.
Also, how can the System show to me 'How do you want to use this disc' , in particular when a DVD is non rewritable(DVD-R) and also contains data)?
Bear in mind, not all DVDs/CDs were not detected. However, only full lightscribe discs' (having data)
However, even blank lightscribe discs were detected without problems. When insert a lightscribe disc having data, then I faced that error. However, when inserting blank lightscribe discs I found that the disc were opened. Also,
non lightscribe discs were opened well.
When checking the device manager, I didn't see any issue with DVD/CD drive. If there were a problem unrecongnising, then I would have seen 'a remarkable mark' in front of it.
Note: I have faced this problem after trying formating a rewritable CD inserted onto the drive. Althouthg the format failed, all data on the disc was deleted. Anyway, after that, then inserting full-lightscribe discs are unregonised
Do you think the problem wth my optical drive. IF so, I would be saying why it wasn't happened with all other non lightscribe discs. If my lightscrib discs were corrupted, then why would they have opened well on another laptop.
I have done:
Press the Windows logo key+R to open the Run dialog box.
Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then clickUninstall.
When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.
Restart the computer.
But the same prolbem is existing.
yes there is a virtual CloneDrive program installed on my PC, however, there is no any CD mounted into it. Even if a CD was mounted into Virtual Clondrive, there would be no problem at all, because the virtual CloneDrive is used to only
mount ISO disc images into it, and not physical discs.
Any I have do what you have said, when inserting a light-scribe disc having data, then I open it, I found this
NOTE: in the above screen shot there is a lightscribe DVD having data inserted. However, in the screen shot below, there a ightsrbe DVD not having data inserted. In the first screen shot, the disc is not reconginsed by Windows, however, in
the second is recognised.
Even when I have inserted a lightscribe disc not having data(empty), it opened well regardless of what virutal CloneDrive is enabled or disabled.
But when cliced on my problem didn't solve,
A man should convert his anger and sadness into strength to continue living in this life.Hi,
The product Name of my computer is: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment
Notebook PC support
The number of my computer is : LM610EA#A2N.
Could anyone please at this splendid forum take some of their precious time
out to really reply my questions and solve my problems?
FIRST OF ALL:
My HP Pavilion Laptop is about 3 years old.
My
sister's Dell Inspiron laptop is 3 years old.
My HP lapotp is well-cared, as opposed to my sister's Inspiron Dell laptop,
which is always thrown in dust without caring at all. Also, its battery is
always inserted even when it is fully charged while the laptop is plugged in to
the main power supply.
However, my laptop is either used on only battery, or on plugin. Also, it is
kept from the dust.
But, I really found that the battery of the Dell laptop
still lasts about three and half hours, and there is no problem cooling fan is
not oproperly preporly.
I only remember one thing differently done on my laptop battery which is I
charged it fully, then I stored it without using it for about four months, then
when I reused it, I found it got worse over time. I.e. first time of using it
after storing,I found it empty, then I charged it again fully, however, then it
lasted about 2 hours, then 1 and half hours, next an hour, now it is only
lasting about 20 minutes without performance. If there is high performance, then
the computer shuts down suddenly.
My problem is follows:::
First: Whenever I inserted any Containing Data OR Data
CD/DVD-R LightScribe discs, I found that HP optical driver was
unable to read them. When clicking on the optical disc drive
'duble-click', then I find that disc opens as this way(NOT: With a CD/DVD player
is grayed out)
Blank Or Used CD, DVD±R,RW lightscirbe is unable to be
read:(clicking on it let it Open like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD player:
NOTE: with CD/DVD Player is grayed out)
Used CD/DVD±R/RW Non-LightScribe disc opens normal:
Blank CD,DVD±R,RW Non-LightScribe opens normal(Opens like a USB FlashDrive or
With a CD,DVD)::

I tried running the below command line to fix potential disk issue 'Chkdsk
/r /f'
I cleaned the drive, discs, and so on.
I have uninstalled the all third-party data recording software.
I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software which
came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
I have recovered my system from the Factory Recovery discs.
I have tried opening all those LightScibe discs not opening on my HP optical
drive, on a Dell optical drive, and all of them were opened well, although Dell
optical drive did not have a lightscribe feature at all., nor third party disc
recording software
However, the problem is still with opening the discs LIGHT-SCRIBE
Thus, my questions are:
How to determine if the drive is corrupted and needs to be replaced with
another one.
I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP
laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical
drive which is as follows:::(ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of
My Desktop Computer) ---while my optical drive of my desktop was connected to
the primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the
primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning
well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5,
something went wrong, and then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer
(HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOT recognised/Installed on
BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a
recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a
disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it
opened empty(no files at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot
to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was
still shown as installed on BIOS. However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried
clicking on it on BIOS and then clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be
re-recognized. However, that made no difference. I had to take part my computer
,and then reconnected the optical drive onto the secondary slave
IDE , and let HDD connected to the same primary master IDE.
Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs became being read
normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS]]]
What is meant with with double Layer Support.
How much does it cost?

I have tried to install Windows 8.1 64 on my new Mac Book Pro from a full install disc. When I get the the choice of partitions to install Windows 8.1 on the Windows installer says that the Bootcamp partition is not valid.
Has anyone encountered the same issue?BCA creates the partition as FAT, which the installer needs to format.
Please see https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2 for reference. Where does it break in your case?
