Hate 4, Tried system restore to get version 3 back, now firefox won't open

After upgrading to ver. 4 I had to start using I.E. to use court report sites and county tax sites, and had other problems so I need to revert to ver.3
I did a system restore and now Firefox will not open. (vista home premium)

Here's the process to reinstall Firefox 3.6:
You can download an installer for Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
Before running it I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Backing up your information (copy whole profile folder).
Close Firefox 4, and uninstall it. Do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program. Some people report it's okay to skip this step.
Then finally you can reinstall Firefox 3.6. Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, it should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!
Finally, just a note that System Restore may have changed the registry settings from Firefox 4 to Firefox 3.6, but doesn't actually change the program files, so that could be why it's broken.

• Firefox 4 could not be made to show bookmarks on Vista 64bit. I used system restore to get back to older version. Now Firefox won't open at all even after undoing system restore

I use Vista 64 bit. Was fine with older Version of Firefox (3.6, I believe). Upgraded to Ver. 4. Couldn't access extensive bookmarks file or bookmarks toolbar. Tried all the Firefox help recs and they didn't work. Clicking the top button would give list of toolbars but when I tried to move to bookmarks toolbar the menu changed. Tried going thru tools and options and that didn't work. So decided to use System Restore to get old Firefox version back. Icons remained but program wouldn't open. Tried many ways, including start menu. Old version is still on program control file but only option is to uninstall. So went back to System Restore to get Vers. 4 back and it's not there. What to do?? I can use Google Chrome or Internet Explorer but I want all my 100's of bookmarks back. Thank you.

Hello, discodiva64
Thank you for the question.  Try uninstalling all components of iTunes in the order specified of the article below.  Once this is done attempt to install iTunes again.

• Just downloaded latest version and now Firefox won't open a new tab. How do I fix this?

I've been using Firefox for years, however as of last week I can no longer open a new tab. I have to go to "file > new window" new tab quick function nor dropdown work. I'm using a Mac OS X 10.9.3.

• Uninstalled new version, horrible. Installed the older version and now it won't open! HELP WANT MY MUSIC!

I installed the new version thinking it would be the same, It was horrible! uninstalled it... Installed the older version and now it won't open and when I try it says it can't because the library can't open because it was used on a newer version. Come on! I just want my music! How do I open this and get my music back.
I put my Ipod in and it still says the same thing, what's going on? Please help me!

I don't know whom to thank first-- b noir for telling me about the Lorraine fix or Lorraine for figuring out the fix. THE LORRAINE FIX WORKED FOR ME!!! (I feel a little like I am advertising "Hooked on Phonics" with that last line!)
Thank you doesn't say it strongly enough, but THANK YOU b noir and Lorraine for your help. I was to the boiling point last night and starting to get there tonight. Now I am resting easy and thankful that there is a community of computer users out there who care enough to troubleshoot problems together and work together to figure out a solution--and then to take the time to post and share information.
I would STRONGLY suggest that anyone who is having the iTunes issues where iTunes just plain won't open at all after downloading the newest version and has a pc with Norton Internet Security 2005 try the "Lorraine Method."
I am so happy I think I might sing. Or not--I will let my songs on iTunes do the singing for me now that I can again!!!!!!!
And to those still looking for answers--be patient--I now know how incredibly frustrating this can be and I hope that you all find your solutions very very soon!!

• Windows updates removes all tabs and tab groups so I have to regularly do a system restore to get them back.

When there is an automatic update from Windows or Microsoft Security Essentials, it regularly has removed all my tabs and tab groups. A very frustrating occurance so I have to do a system restore to get all these back. Any solutions to this issue?

After your computer restarts, you should be able to choose "Restore Previous Session" from Firefox's History menu to restore all your tabs and groups from last time.
For this to work, Firefox must be set to remember history in the Options window - Privacy panel.

• Tried to use Restore to return to pre-Firefox4 but now Firefox won't open and won't uninstall.

After trying to maneuver the new Firefox 4.0 for a while and giving up, I wanted to go back to the 3.6.1.6 version. I used the Restore feature to try to go back to the pre-Firefox 4.0 dowload. Since then, Firefox won't open. I have tried to uninstall Firefox 3.6.1.6, which is listed in my installed programs in the Control Panel, but it doesn't do anything. At this point I don't know what to do. I want to re-instate the 3.6.1.6 version on my computer. Thanks.

You're in a bit of a pickle here because you can't use System Restore to revert to 3.6.16. You probably now have version 1.9.2.x which is in part, files which were not removed when you installed FF4
What you can try and do is use System Resore to undo the last restoration which should take you back to 4.0 again. If that fails, see this article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_firefox
If the undo restoration is successful, do the following to revert to 3.6.16
Go to Download Firefox v3.6.16 and download it to the desktop. If necessary, download the file with IE8 and choose to save it to your desktop when you see the prompt.
Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
Then reboot and delete the folder called Mozilla Firefox at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.
Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.

• I just did two System Restores (and clicked something that asked me about "[something -exe]," and now Firefox won't open at all.

I hope someone can help. My husband did something to update Firefox (or Firefox just automatically updated today, I don't know which), but I didn't like the new toolbar much, so I did a System Restore to get back the old one. That didn't work, so I then did another System Restore for an earlier day, but when I restarted the computer, Firefox wouldn't open at all.
A pop-up asked me something about "allowing 'something-.exe' at start-up," with options like "Remember this action, don't allow, and allow," I think, and I don't remember what I clicked, and that's likely part of the problem, but in any case, I can't get Firefox to start now. I click on the logo/icon and nothing happens.
I tried to undo both System Restores, but the computer would only restore the most recent one, not both.
And I tried, as suggested on the forum elsewhere, to go into "Firefox Safe Mode," but that didn't help either.
Thank you for any help.

That's what happened to me too after I upgraded to firefox 4 and it wouldn't connect to my internet. Now I'm stuck with Internet Explorer with none of my important personal information like my favorites.

• I just updated to latest Firefox version and now it won't open at all. I even tried to go back to the previous version using Time Machine on my Mac and FF just won't open.

Firefox won't open after downloading latest version this morning.

Hi, JEvansIII.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try resetting your System Management Controller or SMC then launch iTunes after processing these steps.  If the issue persists, try downloading a fresh copy of iTunes by accessing the second link below.

• I followed your help directions on "Corrupt extension files" under "Unable to install add-ons", foolishly deleting the files you told me to. Now firefox won't open. I tried reinstalling firefox but it still won't open. Now what do I do?

I was trying to install the SEOQuake add on. After clicking install Firefox would hang up saying the script had timed out and asking if I want to stop it or continue. Didn't matter which option I chose nothing would happen. The only way to stop it was to close Firefox and restart. Tried restarting the computer. Still wouldn't install. Tried installing the Outwit add on and got the same error leading me to conclude it was a problem with Firefox, not the add on. I found this help page <http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons?s=addons+won't+install&as=s> and did everything it told me to. Finally at the end I got to "Corrupt extension files". I foolishly deleted the files you told me to and now Firefox won't even start! I tried reinstalling Firefox and it still won't start. Tried restarting the computer. I have no idea how to get back to where I was let alone install the add ons I wanted to install. Please help. At this point I'd just be happy to be able to get Firefox working.

See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)<br />

• Updated to 4.0 version and when it loaded I got 4 identical icons on my desktop. I went back in time on my computer and now Firefox won't open.

Updated to 4.0 version and when it finished loading I got 4 identical Firefox icons on my desktop. I went back in time on my computer to go back to an order version and Firefox won't open or is very slow to open.

Do a clean (re-)install:
* Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 4.0: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
* Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
* Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
* It may not be necessary to create a new profile, so first try if it works with your current profile and if not then create a new profile.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

• Why am I both unable to open Firefox and unable to uninstall it? I used Firefox regularly until today, but this morning I did a System Restore and other troubleshooting and now Firefox is completely unavailable to me.

I've been having lots of problems with my computer abruptly shutting down lately. This problem might be solved -- it's too early to tell.
When I try to uninstall Firefox, it beeps like Windows is going to uninstall it, then nothing. I close out the Window, then search for it to see if it's gone. It's still there.
I like Firefox, but now I'm forced to use IE. How can I get Firefox back? I don't want to download it until I've uninstalled what's on here now.

First, please try reinstalling Firefox over your current installation. There is very little risk of making things any worse than the system restore function has already done.

• Had to restore comp. to earlier time, now firefox will not open.

I have a HP Pavilion Slimline desktop, model s5310y. It is using
Windows 7. A popup from Firefox came up saying I was using an outdated version-3.6 I believe. I hit the download button, it downloaded but when I tried to use it, it would not open. I uninstalled the program, and restored the computer to a couple of days earlier. The origonal Firefox is back, but it will not open.
I need the bookmarks out of it.

If you use ZoneAlarm Extreme Security then try to disable Virtualization.

• I downloaded a new version of iTunes and now Firefox won't open iTunes

I loaded new version of iTunes and Safari. When system restarted - iTunes won't open. I deleted Safari - still no go.

I'm having this issue as well. Anytime I click on items that would normally open in Itunes, it tells me I need to install Itunes. I've uninstalled/reinstalled Itunes to no avail. In looking in Firefox's preferences, there's no reference to Itunes in the Applications tab.
