Hated RAID card removed, now what?

Finally, after three years of pain and suffering, the RAID card is de-installed.
It was easier than expected. Backed up my three old drives (that were converted into "enhanced JBOD" long ago), installed an extra drive (formatted with DU) and cloned the startup drive on it.
Pulled the card, generally reversing the procedure described in www.caldigit.com/Support/CalDigitRAIDCardGettingStarted(2.2.0).pdf. Messing with the lower of the two screws holding the fan module was a *****.
Surprisingly, the "enhanced JBOD" drives (that I thought would be unreadable without the card) are perfectly readable. I was expecting that I'd have to reformat them. But the system booted up right away from one of them, and everything seems to be working.
The question is: do I still need to reformat those drives? Should I expect any troubles from them - since they were formatted with RAID utility and through the card that is no longer there?

Thanks!
Then I believe I'm done.
(Had I known it's that easy I'd get rid of it two years ago. The notion of a RAID controller that fails more often than any of the disks it manages with is ridiculous. But someone somewhere wrote that the disks that this card had touched would not work without it, even if they were JBOD.)

First, please be aware that you are not communicating with Apple when you post in these forums. The only people who will reply to your posts are we your fellow users. iTunes Support will never respond to posts made here.
As to your issue, confirm with your bank that they do not block access from on-line services or otherwise have restrictions on with whom a card can be used. For some company cards, such blocks can be set up. If you confirm that no such restrictions are in place, post back and we'll go from there.

  • I can't change my Credit Card.. now what?

So last month my PayPal Mastercard debit card that I used to make payments was used to make unauthorized charges. So I advised PayPal and ot a new card. Today, I tried to update my payment info to the new card and the card was rejected due "Card type not accepted."  Really? It's the same card that I was using, just a new number.
Of course I tried customer service chat but that was a waste of time. The guy never really read what I wrote and wanted to send me the link... When I explained I already tried that and that wasn't the problem... he gave me a phone number to call.... I asked if they were open today... after a long pause he said they were only open 5 days a week.  Not today.
So... what happens when my account tries to renew and the card doesn't work?

    Hi,
I am sorry about the inconvenience caused. I have contacted our customer support for your issue. One of our specialist on credit card payments will contact you in the following day to help you resolve the credit card update problem. If no one contact you before tomorrow, please let me know.

  • HT201272 I bought an audiobook and it doesn't appear on my itunes store but I got an order confirmation and it  hit my credit card.  Now what  do I do?

I bought an audiobook download from my ipad mini and i got the receipt from my credit card but it doesn't appear in my itunes anywhere.  Can I get it re-downloaded?  How do I do that?

Have you checked to see whether it's in the Music app (iTunes on the iPad it just the store, it doesn't contain your downloaded and synced content) ? When you have audiobooks on an iPad you will get an Audiobooks option under the More button at the bottom of the Music app.
Note that audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store (so they won't appear in the Purchased tab for re-downloading), so you may want to copy it to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases so that you can take a backup copy of it - it should copy over to the Books part of your iTunes library.

  • PANIC! - Mac Pro 2008 RAID Card Vanished!

    Hi all
Right I seem to have a major issue so hoping someone can help.
This morning I was using my MP there was a click the screen went blank and then the MP tried to reboot. The white light came on but the screens did not. I turn off the unit and all connected devices at the mains, waited a few mins and tried to re boot. The screen when blue but nothing loaded. I then got my old SL disk and booted from that. It booted and looking at disk utility there are no drives. Even worse I booted RAID utility and it tells me there is no RAID card!
Now in essence I have got no further due to having to leave for work but I thought I'd ask for advice / ideas before I got back to the machine tonight.
I will obviously try reseating the unit (with and without drives) but does it sound like the card is knackered!
If this turns out to be the case is there a way I will be able to (some how) access data off the three drives that were in a RAID 5 config. or is the data lost?
I do have a spare new battery for the card so would it be worth trying this as well?
Any pointers you could give would be appreciated.
Actually while were on the subject. If the card is dead then what card if any would you recommend to replace it with. (Not that I can currently afford to do this!). A actual Apple 2008 RAID card will be like Rocking Horse S**t to get hold of. It would need to be bootable and preferably do internal and external (but just internal would be fine)
    Thanks
    Steve

Ok this has got a bit strange

  • Windows and Mac Pro w/ Apple RAID card

It happened i have a need to run Windows natively on Mac Pro with Apple RAID card installed.
I know there is no Windows driver for that card, but i had a hope to bypass RAID card via connecting of internal SATA drive directly to iPass(SSF-8087) connector of Mac Pro's motherboard and using of that drive for Windows.
So, i've connected SATA drive this way and it works fine with OS X.
But i can't even try it with Windows because Mac Pro doesn't boot up from Windows installation CD if Apple RAID card installed
Empty black text console is all that i've got after selecting of Windows installation CD in EFI boot menu.
I need a suggestion how to bypass my problem, or generally speaking, how to install Windows onto Mac Pro with Apple RAID card.

    I've tried that.
Installation and booting of WinXP passed OK if RAID card removed.
But i've got black screen again trying to boot WinXP after RAID card re-installed.

  • Added Array, Now What?

Forgive my incompetence about adding an array, but all the posts about people losing everything has me apprehensive about restarting the system. I do have stuff backed up, but do not want to create a mess if something goes wrong at this point.
I added a RAID 5 array, filling out the lower half of an Xserve. Raid admin recognizes it under arrays & drives. The arrays are listed under the picture as 1 RAID 5 and 2 RAID 5.
    Now what?
Do I just use "Add System" in Raid Admin? (right now it shows one system with an address) or, do I shut everything down, restart and then run disk utility according to the manual?

You should enable journaling. It doesn't affect performance in any meaningful way.
What journaling DOES do is prevent the system from having to run 'fsck' on the disk, should it be shut down uncleanly. On a 1 TB volume, fsck can take an hour (or hours!) to run, and the system cannot finish booting until this time, so what you'll see is that your system appears to "hang" at boot time, and unless you know what's going on and have the patience to wait 1 or 2 or 3 hours until it completes, will probably panic and think your machine is hosed. I've seen it way too many times. Enable journaling, please

    Clone your system.
    Clone your RAID volume.
    Clone as backup strategy.
Clean install Lion on a single drive.
    Clone back.
Other options: ditch and sell Apple RAID for another PCIe controller.

  • Blackmagic removed desktop audio functionality from Declink cards on Windows.... now what?

So, Blackmagic removed desktop audio functionality from Declink cards on Windows.... now what? After Effects is not programmed to talk to Decklink cards directly on the audio part, there is no ASIO, or mercury playback for the audio part, Blackmagic says it was never intended to be used as an audio card, yet up to last version of version 9 provided an audio driver for it, as a result, now any application not written to talk to the Decklink card directly, can't use the card for audio playback. I'm wondering if they think that the people that uses After Effects don't need audio at all....   rewiring all the rooms in  the post productions facilities that had all the audio of all the system going out via the decklink cards it is not an option.
I'm wondering if Adobe is aware of this and if it have plans to support direct connection to the Decklink cards on the audio side of After Effects. This is a huge problem for all the people that uses AE and Decklink on windows and wants a profesiona quality audio monitoring.  Audition, Premiere, all of those can work now, but not AE. I remember some time ago AE used to support ASIO, but I do not see that option anymore.

Adobe talks with Blackmagic regularly and we were recently made aware of this change. It is, clearly, not something under our control but we can provide feedback to them about your responses to the change.
You are correct, After Effects does not play back audio through Mercury Transmit like Premiere Pro does. This was something we considered for After Effects CC 2014 (CC), but at the time we were developing this release there was no urgent need to do so, and this would require significant work to re-wire how After Effects plays back audio. We will continue to talk with Blackmagic and evaluate what the best plan is going forward.

  • 2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"

I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight.  Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing.  Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right?  Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
    (1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now.  Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
    (2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable.  Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it?  I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?
Hesitant to plunk down $160 on a new spare disk if the present one isn't actually dead ...

    I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked.  The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then.  You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity".  If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0!  raidutil now says
    % sudo raidutil list raidsetinfo

    RS1           RAID 5     1,2,3,4    5.23TB    0.00MB  No tasks running
Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did.  I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive.  I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone.  The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card.  I wasn't too worried about that happening.

  • Removing RAID card from MacPro (2006)

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) which had been used as a server. It has an Apple RAID card installed (the first version, blue one, part number A1247).
I am now using this computer at home. The RAID card has failed. I'd like to remove it, reformat the drives and use the computer as a non-RAID version.
I have physically removed and unplugged the RAID card from the connector. I reinstalled the hard drives. However, when I boot up off the Snow Leopard Install DVD, Disk Utility cannot find the four hard drives that had previously been plugged into the RAID Card.
Am I missing a step somewhere? Is there more hardware beyond just the RAID card itself I needed to remove, and if so, can someone point me to the instructions on how to do it?
    Thanks!
    Matt

Just to elabroate on The hatter's post and in case anyone else stumbles upon this thread when searching about removing the Apple RAID card from the Mac Pro (pre-2009), the answer is within the first link in The hatter's post, namely this Apple user guide on installing the RAID card: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacPro_RAIDCard_Installation.pdf
Basically, there's an iPass cable that connects the hard drives to the motherboard - but when you have your Mac configured with an Apple RAID card the iPass cable is connected to the RAID card instead of the motherboard. So when you remove the RAID card you need to connect the iPass cable back to your motherboard and that involves removing the fans, which is a tad fiddly. Make sure you've got a good magnetic screwdriver that doesn't chew screws!
Hope this helps someone out there
I've finally managed to replace my RAID card and dual SAS drives with a Vertex 2 SSD and I'm loving the speed, quietness and most importantly the fact I can now put my Mac Pro to sleep!!

  • Suggestions for removing Apple RAID Card?

After a year of dealing with problematic Apple RAID cards, and replacement batteries – we are ready to move on, without the RAID card.
We have not yet used it as a RAID – all drives operate discretely, non-RAIDed.
We propose to remove the RAID card to eliminate that point of common failure. Has anyone else faced this, done this? Any suggestions, warnings?
    TIA for your kind attention.

    Hi Michael,
What issues are you having? I had an issue with a faulty battery on a new xserve but once that was swapped out it's been as good as gold. If the drives you have installed have not been raided then you could buy the SATA backplane for the Xserve and swap it out.. Takes about 10 mins to do.
    All the best

  • 2009 Raid card questions...now shipping

I see the Apple Raid card for early 2009 Mac Pro is now shipping. Does anyone have any results from using this card? I'd like to know about sleep, any battery issues, or anything else good or bad. I will be using the Mac Pro mostly for Aperture and Photoshop. Working with Nikon D3 raw in Aperture, approx 25MB file size. Would a raid 0 offer any speed advantage in Aperture with raw images. My gut feeling is no, no speed increase. However I'd like to hear what others have to say. Thanks.

How much ram are you running? Having a good amount of ram first will definitely help a lot with large photos. Plus a raid 0 for scratch would help too.
However, if you are planning on doing only a raid 0, I don't think the apple raid card is necessary. $700 can go pretty far with other decent options. External enclosures esata options for example.

People that buy the apple raid card usually want to do raid 5 configs. I'm not saying that raid 0 on the apple card wouldn't smoke...I'm sure it would, but for that price, maybe other options would be more flexible and usable also in the future.

You did not ruin the phone, you will need a sim card to activate the phone and then connect the phone to itunes and do a restore from back up.
