Have 10.6.8-what affect will Lion have on FCP, iMovie?
I must upgrade to Lion, but have heard that the affect on FCP & i'Movie is very bad. What can I expect when I upgrade? Should I wait for Mountain Lion in July?
It really depends on the version. http://roaringapps.com/apps:table has a good guide for Lion. The Mountain Lion listing though is premature since no one yet has the official release of it until the date announced on http://www.apple.com/pr/ it is available for download. A change of classifier/policy on the WAE is not affecting the existing flows so you shouldn't need to disable WCCP if you want to force group settings there.

Is it possible to use an external drive to play movies on my iPhone 5? I am going on a long flight and only have a 16gb iPhone 5. I will not have access to wifi, so it would have to connect manually. I've heard of apps that connect to an external for this very purpose, but its via wifi.

What problems will I have if I reinstall OS 10.6.3?
I have an older version of Pro Tools, 8.0.5 I have just inherited my wife's 2010 MacBook Pro. It has Mavericks installed. Pro Tools 8.0.5 has not been supported by newer operating systems. I have the original discs that came with the computer (Mac OS 10.6.3). Can I install an older OS? What is the down side?
Yes. The downside is that you must erase the drive in order to install Snow Leopard.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

If I run CC Cleaner, what effect will it have on my current CS6 apps?
I am not able to download the new CC apps. I was told to delete my old App Mgr, and download a new version. Now I have no App Mgr, and nothing at all will download. So I was then told to run CC Cleaner and try the download again. However, the only choice to run it on the Creative Cloud includes also running it on the CS6 apps. I'd like to know whether this means my current apps would also be removed and have to be re-downloaded. This is probably not a step I'd be willing to take, especially since it isn't clear that this would solve the original problem.
Thanks for any help.You should be able to install the Creative Cloud application from https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud when signed in with your Adobe ID. This new application will handle downloading and installing CC or CS6 applications.

Will Lion have support for HDMI?
Since 10.8.6 I've not been able to use my monitor connected via HDMI to my MacBook Pro.
I can make do with a dodgy old cable but thats not the point. I feel Apple should supprt HDMI it's not that old.
Can some please let me know whether a fix is in the pipeline or do I have to revert to the older system?

And I'm pretty sure that the 10.6.8 upgrade still supports HDMI. Lion supports it for sure. -
Reader XI requires 1024X768 resolution. My video card max is 1024X600. What poblems will I have?
I am running Reader X. It says it requires 1024 X 768 resolution. My video card max resolution is 1024 X 600. I haven't had any problems I couldn't overcome or weren't fixed by Adobe. Reader XI has the same requirement so I'm wondering if I will encounter any new problems.

What issues will I have if I take sql 2005 on 32bitOS TO sql 2005 on 64bit?
Last Year our SolMan was installed on 32bit OS, with SQL 2005 on Windows Ent. Edition (UNICODE).
I am preparing to migrate it to 64bit OS, and want to get there as quickly as possible without jepordizing the data integrity.
I was thinking that rather than doing a data export and import, that I could simply do a detach/attach of sql 2005
On the NEW server with 64bit OS My plan is to install SolMan 7.0 UNICODE & SQL 2005
If anyone has had experiences with this I would really appreciate tapping into your experience

We have used attach and detach method. We used the system copy option in the installation master for the java instance. Search for SAP notes for more detail - i dont have the right note handy.

What hardware will be sufficient for FCP X? Starting from nothing
I'm going to be picking up a Mac for making commercial shorts in FCP X (720p and HD, 3-5 minutes long generally), and trying to get my head around which of the current offerings would be sufficient for the task. Budget is a concern, so I don't want to automatically just go with the best or most professional-level option. I haven't worked in the Apple environment at all, I'm thinking about converting from PC.
So far I've narrowed it down to these options.. which is pretty broad, so I'd appreciate the community's feedback. If this is in the wrong section, I apologize ahead of time.
1. Mac Mini 2.5 and buy RAM/monitor/keyboard/mouse
- About $1000
- Not sure if it will be powerful enough
- I don't have a monitor/keyboard/mouse because all my monitors are being used in my current setups, so it has to be priced into the cost of the system
2. Mac Mini 2.3 and buy RAM/monitor/keyboard/mouse
- About $1200
3. Macbook Air 13" with RAM upgrade and buy a mouse
- About $1350
- Can be used on the go, which would be pretty awesome
- Will be stuck with a small screen, might have to pick up a second monitor
4. iMac 21.5
- $1300
- I believe it's less powerful than #2 and costs more? Not sure whether this is a good choice.
5. iMac 27
- $1800

I'm the no-budget-guy here, using FCPX for hobbyist productions … the 'pros' will groan loadly, but I'll say it forever: it IS possible to use FCPX on a shoestring budget, e.g. using usb2 (yes, that is a two, no three) drives etc. use FCPX' features wisely, proxies, de-locating Events/Projects, etc.
a few, very subjective comments/my p.o.v.:
• screen-estate is important - you get 20, 22" widescreen tfts for under 150; I like two screens, but color precision is no issue here.
• the new MacMini (I'm using a historic 2.26GHz one) has a LESS than optimal GPU compared to an iMac, another read here
• … but is way-than-fast-enough - and is 'speed' really an issue? you'd pay another grand for 15% faster - reads as: not 5minutes, but 3:30m …

I have a Windows 7 laptop using I tunes 64 and all my music files are
on an external disc. I rarely use I tunes and at one point moved all my files
(including the music files) from one external disc to another without
considering what affect this would have on the I tunes library. When I eventually
attempted to use I tunes, every selected a song from the library resulted in a
message stating that the file couldn't be located. After following some of the procedures
explained in this community I was able to reconnect the library back to where
the associated music files are presently stored. However, there are still 2
problems that need to be corrected. 1) Every song file now has a duplicate. One
file works and the other file will result in the same message stating that the
file couldn't be located. Before there were 4,000 songs in the library, now
there are 8,000 songs. I need to eliminate the 4,000 dead song files. 2) All
the playlists are still associated with the dead song files which makes the
playlists unusable. Can the playlists be reconnected to the usable files
without manually having to recreate them? Thanks in advance for the help.

You used your iPod as a hard drive (drag and drop) instead of having iTunes install the music?
If you used drag and drop your choices are different than if you used iTunes to transfer.

I am usually fine with my apple tv. However, quite frequently I get the message that apple tv cannot access apple store. i go to my Ipad or Mac computer and I am able to acess apple store easily. Does anyone have an idea on what is wrong?
Have you tried connecting it with an ethernet cord? It could be a wifi issue.

I recompiled my kernel for RAID 5, but I was wondering when updating to newer version of the kernel, will ArchLinux have RAID support compiled in, or will I have to recompile RAID support in each time there is a kernel update?
