Have a master password problem

For the last couple weeks I've been having a problem with my Master Password. When I enter it it says it's wrong. I've checked it out and it doesn't matter what I do it says it's wrong, so I end up having to go in and change it. Then it accepts the old password and allows me to change the password. This has happened 4 or 5 times. Now I can't get it to accept the password even to get a new one. This is too frustrating. Is there something I've done, like erasing cookies or something that set this ball rolling???

Wow, that's illogical: the same password was correct in one dialog and incorrect in another?
If you type the password into a Notepad window where you can see the text, then copy/paste it into the dialog, does it work?
Do you use any security software designed to frustrate keyloggers? In the past some users have encountered problems with such software because they scrambled the input of passwords or other form data.

I haven't used my IMac in a long time and went to boot it up, and I find I don't remember the correct username and password (I use several computers..I try to keep the passwords similar, with a number for the chronological order in which I started using them) I've tried all the others I use for passwords. The 'hint" keeps coming up for the password I am pretty sure is the correct one, but, still cannot get in.  I also don't remember whether I changed my surname on the computer...it was changed legally a little while ago, but some of my older devices still have my birth-name in there)

  • How do i dissable the master password feature for saving web passwords , when i don't have the master password?

I have mistakenly enabled the need for a master password for firefox to autofill passwords for me.I have no clue what the master password is.Is there any way to disable or change the master password , without knowing what the master password is?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Master Password problem

    Hi,
I just set my master password on my newly re-imaged Macbook pro running Leopard 10.5.6. But after trying to update some software, I realized that I must have made the SAME mistake while setting the password, and now I don't know what it is! (Stupid, I know). I tried restarting the laptop with the install disk and resetting the password in the utilities menu like "Help" described to me, but it gave me this message "you don't have permission to reset this password or a general error has occurred". there is only one user account on my mac so far (the admin account) so now I don't know what I can do. Also, I bought it used if that makes a difference. I really don't want to loose all my data and re-install leopard again. Any help would be appreciated!

If you haven't set a master password, you should be able to do so from an administrator account with System Preferences > Security > FileVault, but if you aren't using FileVault there isn't a particular reason to set one.

  • Master password problems...

my hard drive crashed about a year ago and when it did i had to purchase another one (obviously) and replace it...well i set a master password, and my computer has never once asked me to put it in...so, i've done an idiotic thing....and i've forgotten it.
now i've moved in with some people i don't know so well and i'd like to set my computer to ask for a password at start up and after coming back from screensaver or from being asleep....
when i went to set this up, it would not accept what i thought was my old password (even with my hint i can't get it).
so i'm wondering if there is ANY WAY i can reset it?
i really hope i don't need the disks....cause i'm in italy until june, and they are at home in the states.
    thanks

Changing password from single user mode:
You can also change the administrator's password from single user mode or create a new administrator account.
You need to get into single use mode for steps one and two that are listed below.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
    http://www.securemac.com/macosxsingleuser.php
Basically, you hold down the command-s key then powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.
    1) You can change the password on an account. ( Do you know Unix. You are in a Unix single user console. ) The setup commands you need should be listed on the screen. For Mac OS 10.4.11, the commands are:
    # Type the follow two instructions to accessing the startup disk in read/write:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    # Start up some utility processes that are needed.
    sh /etc/rc
    # You will probably need to press the enter key once the system stops typing.
    # To find out the users on the system type, use the list command:
    ls /Users
    # One of these accounts will be the administrator.
    # Pick one of the users which I'll call a-user-name and type it in this command:
    passwd a-user-name
    # and enter the new user password. You need six characters.
    # You will need to enter your password twice. Your typing will not show up on the screen just
    # press enter when you complete the typing.
    # For cryptic information on these commands try:
    man ls
    man passwd
The root account isn't enabled by default. I am not sure if changing the password on root will enable it.
    2) Get the Mac to set up an additional administrative account. You can then change the password on your old account.

OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:
Robert's edit: The first two commands will depend on your release of Mac OS X. Looked at what is typed out in the console to determine the exact format.
    /sbin/fsck -y [Enter]
    /sbin/mount -uaw [Enter]
    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone [Enter]
    # Robert's edit: The rm command is the remove command which deletes the file.
    # Robert's edit: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old
    reboot [Enter]
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

Once you have a new administrative account, you can change the password of your old administrative account
blue apple > System Preferences > Accounts
You can see that it is easy to change your administrator password. You can set a firmware password that you enter before your machine will boot.

I want my details to be saved and no one else using my computer should be able to see it easily especially the bookmarks and history

hello karan33, a master password only safeguards access to the passwords stored in firefox. if you don't want your history & bookmarks exposed to other people using the pc, it's best to solve that on the level of your operating system and create separate user accounts: <br>[[How do I share Firefox between people on a computer?]]

  • T410i SSD user and master password problem after firmware upgrade

    Hello.
I have problem with my Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD. After firmware upgrade of SSD my master and user HDD passwords are no longer valid. I'm stuck on BIOS screen and cannot unlock my SSD. After firmware upgrade procedure i got BSOD. Same happened during firmware upgrade on my previous SSD (INTEL X25-M 80GB) but after restart everything was OK. Please help!
    Previous firmware version: 1.3
    Current firmware version: 1.3.3
SSD connected to another computer shows RAW partition data, but firmware version is 1.3.3 - seems like update was successful.

My X301 Intel x18 got bricked also after a BIOS update then secure erase (was going to sell it). I plugged it to a USB kit and onto a desktop and it was recognised and able to format. But plugging it back to the lenovo it is still a brick. My lucky star there was warranty it was replaced by lenovo.
You may want to try it and extract the data, if it works. And hopefully you can still format it and made it work pluggin back to the lenovo.

  • I tried resetting my Master Password using "chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul", but when I click on "Change Master Password" it asks for my CURRENT password. I don't have a current password, because I don't remember it and am trying to reset it!

Using FF 4.01 for laptops & desktops, Windows XP 2002 SP3. I used "chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul" to reset the Master Password. Then went to Tools/Options/Security, clicked on "Change Master Password". BUT it asks for my CURRENT password and new password. I don't know my current password. Is there a default Master Password that I need to input as the Current password?

If you still have a Master Password set then it looks that resetting the MP hasn't worked.
If using the chrome url (chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul) doesn't work then delete the files [http://kb.mozillazine.org/key3.db key3.db] and signons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.

  • I have removed the master password, but Firefox still wil not remember passwords when I log in to other websites.

    Please read question above

Whether or not you have a master password has no effect over whether or not Firefox will offer to save login information.
    * [[Usernames and passwords are not saved]]
Some sites will prevent Firefox from saving login information using the ''autocomplete="off"'' attribute. You can ignore this as follows:
    # Type ''about:config'' into the address bar and press Enter.
    # To bypass the warning, press the big button labeled "I'll be careful, I promise!".
    # In the search box, paste ''signon.overrideAutocomplete''
    # In the search results, double-click ''signon.overrideAutocomplete'' to set its value to '''true'''.
Firefox will still not autofill login information for such sites. You have to either double-click the user name field, or type the first letter of the user name.
Also check that you didn't tell Firefox to never remember login information on specific sites.

  • I tried to set up a new account but it has a master password and do not recall setting one how do I change that it will not let me turn it off without knowing the password I do not recall ever setting on. How do I clear the Master Password?

I was trying to set up my mobile phone with Android with the Firefox App and my Netbook which I use the Firefox on and sync them but it came up that I have a Master Password but I do not recall setting one up and I have record of all my passwords that I keep in a secure place and I had trouble with a hacker who had accessed several of my accounts and I am now concerned that they may have also access this and we did not catch this one as we did the other accounts and stopped them from getting access. But that is not my concern any longer as that has been remedied the problem is how do I get the password unlocked or changed since I have no idea what it is? I tried to turn it off but it will not allow me to do that either without knowing it. Please advise as to what can be done so I can use this App on my Droid. Thanks. Deborah

  • How do You Deactivate the Master Password

I have the Master Password for opening Firefox activated, and now I would like to Deactivate it, so I don't have to continue entering a Password before the Firefox window can open.

Did you install an extension that asks for the Master Password or do you use Firefox Sync?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:

  • How do I actually use a master password?

My home folder is protected with file vault and so I have a master password set. If ever I should forget my user password how would I use the master password to get in to my Mac?
    thx

If you would ever forget your password, then you
would need to use the Mac OS X Install Discs to reset your password.
The above suggestion is not correct for an account that's protected with FileVault. Even if it does allow you to reset the password on the account it does not reset the password on the encrypted home folder.
Instead read this Apple Support article.
Basically you "attempt" to logon to the account using incorrect passwords. After three incorrect attempts you'll be prompted for the Master Password (or if the account has a password hint set you'll see the password hint - enter another incorrect password to get the Master Password prompt).
At this point you can enter the Master Password and you'll be allowed to set a new password for the account. This will also set the new password on the encrypted home folder, mount it and log you in to the account.
You can also mount a FileVault encrypted home folder from the command line with the Master Password using hdiutil. One reason you might want to do this is if you had multiple accounts on a machine and you were logged in to one account but needed to recover or access files in an encrypted home folder of another account.

  • Error while signing in. No prompt for Master Password.

    Firefox 3.6.15 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; sv-SE; rv:1.9.2.15) Gecko/20110303 )
    Firefox sync 1.7
Sync NEVER works automatically. In a new FF session it always reports "Error While Signing In". If I try to connect manually I must go through the set-up dialogue and enter my Master Password etc and then it works (during that session).
I have a Master Password defined.
Sync doesn't prompt for that before trying to connect. So the connection fails and sync concludes that a set-up must be performed.
    Useless extension in current state.

    Hi,
as per the error message is:
"... The part /soap:Envelope/soap:Body was required to be signed by the policy with the transformations [], but the signature was not accepted. (Info: number of valid signatures: 1, number of accepted signer certificates: 0.) ..."
I guess the cert. setup either on your side or the other system's side is not fully correct. Check whether all cert., priv keys and public keys are exchanged propperly and setup as trusted certs.
