Have a new iMac.  can i use my old mini as an external cd/dvd drive?

Just got my new imac and have discovered it is without a cd/dvd drive.  Since I have converted from a mac mini can I use the old mini as an external drive, and how do I do that if the response is yes?

I use LaCie.
My last cd/dvd burner was a LaCie, and it worked perfectly for three years before a bronze sculpture fell off a shelf and landed on it, putting a big dent right in the top of the metal case. I thought that would be the end, but it kept working perfectly, dent and all, for another two years before I finally replaced it.
When my current drive needs to be replaced, that will be a LaCie, too. Same with their external hard drives. And no, I don't work for them.

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

  • New iMac can't find the old iMac via Ethernet

I just bought a new 27" iMac and I am trying to migrate data from my old iMac.
I have the two machines hooked together via Ethernet and have Etherenet turned on in the source iMac but the new iMac can't find the old iMac. The pinwheel keeps spinning with no success. What should I do here?

    Gramps wrote:
    What FireWire?
There is no FireWire port on the new machine so this is a non-starter.
Unfortunately you didn't read my post very thoroughly. You are correct, the new iMacs do not include FW however your old Mac probably does. For just that reason and more Apple makes a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter which you can use if you opt to use FW Target Disk Mode. You can find the adapter by going to your Apple online store or Amazon carries it to. Here is the Amazon link:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-Adapter/dp/B008RXYOKY/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366831510&sr=8-1&keywords=thunderbolt+to+firewire+cable
However as I mentioned use TM or a bootable clone with Migration Assistant. If your old Mac was using any verison of OS X from Leopard (10.5.x) on at the very least you should have a  Time Machine backup!
Also use Pondiini's guide as AnaMusic suggests, it's THE GUIDE for using Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant. He has also created excellent guides for Time Machine too.

  • Buying a new iMac - can you use an external SSD drive as boot drive?

Here is the question: Can you attach an external SSD and use that as your boot drive accompanying an iMac? This way all the Apple warranties stay valid but I am not saddled with the expense of the Apple installed SSD price?
    Now for some background ...
I am looking to buy a new iMac replacing my loved but woefully underpowered Mac Mini. In a perfect world I would like the following set-up based on how today's iMacs can be configured:
    Processor: 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
Hard Drive: 1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
    Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    Optical Drive: 8x double-layer SuperDrive
The problem is I'd rather not spend $3200+. I would imagine most people plug something similar in and then begin to ID must vs. nice to haves. So, here are my must haves:
Memory: Minimum 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB (I was thinking of starting with minimum and then purchase the right RAM and installing myself)
    Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 1GB
Hard Drive: 256GB Solid State Drive
I like to work the graphics side and have a media library of almost 1TB (uploading, downloading, converting, editing, etc.). With my existing setup I have 3+TB of external storage but again, am suffering massively in the horsepower department as it takes hours for me to do what I believe a new iMac can help me accomplish in a fraction of that time. This is not my profession so while I looked at the towers I still need this computer to serve as a family computer as well. Appreciate your thoughts and feedback.
    Cheers,
    -Jim

Ok this is great as we are progressing through.
So yes it can be done but there's the caveat of the "pipes" once you go external.  The only option for an external SSD Drive with thunderbolt that I know of is LaCie's 240 GB version ... Priced at $800.
I think what I will need to do is suck it up.  The new MacBooks have the core technology I'd like but we really want the larger screen.
Last question - should I wait/when might we expect an updated line of iMacs? In a few months or not for a while? That answer may provide some direction if it is anticipated to be sooner vs later.
    Thank you!

  • How can I use an iPad Mini as a external display for any new Vixia Series Camcorder?

    Hey Everyone,
I've worked with Vixia's previously and am looking to purchace one of my own, a G20 or G30 most likely.
I'm very interested in using an iPad Mini as an external display and wondering if anyone has had luck with this.
    Cheers and thank you!

do you mean you want to play your videos from your Vixia camcorder on your iPad mini? Well, that may be a little difficut. Because the video came from your camera may not be a very friendly format.
Here you can try install VLC on your iPad mini , VLC should support AVCHD (*.MTS) natively.
    If this can't work, then find yourself a free converter;
Handbrake, Any video converter ,ffMPEG etc.
If this can't wrok , or the output quality is jerky.
try this one free mts/m2ts converter from pav, I used it and considered to update it.

  • Using Time Machine to migrate to a new iMac, can I keep my old backups?

I've done a lot of searching on this and I'm having trouble finding an answer. I just got a new iMac to replace my existing one. I know the process of migrating either Mac-to-Mac or from my TM backup is straightforward and fairly simple. I'm just trying to figure out if, after migrating all my data to my new Mac, what will happen to my Time Machine disk. Will it want to re-baseline the new Mac and erase my historic backup data? Or will I still have access to the older incremental backups?
    Thanks,
    Matt

If you use either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer your stuff, you'll be offered a choice.  See #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Which new OS can I use with old Tecra 8100?

I want to use this old laptop which originally had win98. I managed to put win xp on it, but it is unworkable slow. Today I tried Lubuntu (a linux distributioon specific for oldies) but that too is too slow.
I just want a simple OS to browse.

New OS? I think you are mean something like Win Vista or Win 7?
I doubt that you will be able to use the Win 7 on this oldie ok, maybe you will be able to install it but Win 7 needs a lot of hardware resources and I think you will not be satisfied with the performance.
So stay with Win XP other Win OS needs more hardware resources than XP

  • Can I use my old iPOD as a external Disk

    Hello,
I have an old ipod Touchwheel (firewire) and I thought that it amy be useful as a form of external disk (10Gig).
Do you know if it is possible to use it as an external disk and also clear all the ipod software etc from the ipod so that i can utilise most of the 10Gbyte available?
    THanks
    John

    Hi John,
I don't think it can be used as an eternal disk but you can enable your iPod for hard disk use for storage.

  • 10.0.4 can't read 10.4 install disk from external Lacie DVD drive.

    Quicksilver G4, 733.
Only has cd/r built in. Added Lacie d2 external DVD drive. Can read CD disks from this drive, but not the OS 10.4 Install drive. Downloaded drivers from Lacie, in case that would help, but can't open them because DMG images won't mount. (probably because 10.0.4 is too old, again)
Any help is appreciate, except for suggestions to send the DVD in for CDs, which seems very disappointing to me. We have the DVD drive, and it's working. There must be some way to install from this drive in OS 10.0.4, somehow.
    Thanks.

Thanks very much for the replies. Unfortunately, the Mac in question is a friend's 2 hours away, and bringing another mac along isn't an option. But, the emac cd, as well as a 10.2 powermac cd, both ran the installer / began the installation process without issues while testing on a lower end G4 at work. I am assuming I can use those to install 10.2.
The real issue is the fact that the firewire drive won't boot with the OS 10.4 dvd. I do get a "firewire" symbol on the screen when forcing to boot from the firewire port, but dvd drive light just "flickers", and doesn't read the disk.
I'm not sure if upgrading to 10.2, getting the drive to work by installing drivers, etc, will solve the issue of booting with the 10.4 disk. Wouldn't the 10.4 disk boot even if the operating system currently on the mac is 10.0 (or 8.5..even..). Makes me wonder if this computer is capable of booting from a firewire port. Have found conflicting information on that soo far.
Another option would be to replace the internal with a dvd/combo. And that would be another set of questions (any recomendations of a dvd internal I can pop into this model?).
    (733 Quicksilver model).
    Thanks again.

  • I have an 06 iMac can I use that with a new iMac mini?

My iMac is from 06 I can't afford a brand new one at this time but I can get a mini and my friend says all you need is a monitor. I was wondering if that could be hooked into the current iMac I have or if I'll have to specifically get a new monitor and not the thunderbolt one, obviously I can't afford that either if I'm just getting the mini cause I can't completely upgrade. Is this possible? Or will I have to look into getting a monitor as well?

Okay thank you that helped me, still it would be far less than getting a new one, I have friends who are geeks who could loan me a monitor til I get one LoL.

  • Buying a new iMac; can i use my eMac as a second display?

Hi, I'm just about to buy an iMac (intel core 2 duo), probably 17" 2 GHz with some extra RAM.
I currently have an eMac, and now I wonder, is there any way to use it (the eMac) as a second display for the iMac? Obviously, the eMac doesn't have any video input, but I'm thinking that maybe there is some third party solution that could send the second screen image through ethernet, firewire or usb? Or if there is any other way to solve this. Since I'm going to use the iMac for Logic Pro, I find it usable to keep the arrange window and mixer window on seperate screens, and I can't quite afford buying a new screen atm.
Though, if it doesn't work to do like this, maybe I'll buy an extra screen at some point in the future. Would I, in that case, need a special graphics card on the iMac? Or does it support two screens (with seperate content) as it is?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Thanks for this great reply! I marked it as helpful.
By the way I happened to write another reply myself
(not to you, to my own post) while you wrote yours,
just wanted to note that to avoid confusion. I'm not
very used to these forums, sorry...
Yes, the forums can take some getting used to.
I saw your second post, and that is why I wrote my second reply. I thought you were clarifying based on my reply See we all get confused sometimes
Anyway, I guess a delay would probably grow
incredibly irritating very quickly, so I guess it
wouldn't be an acceptable sustainable solution,
    really.
Yes, the delay would probably be quite a problem in real use. The only way I could see around it would be to move slowly and then stop and make sure that the pointer doesn't end-up beyond where you stopped.
If you waited say 3 or 4 seconds and then clicked, you would know that the pointer is where it is.
But, that would slow-down your productivity.
I think a second monitor would be best.
So maybe buying a new screen is the best/only
"solution"... In that case, I think an LCD screen is
probably best as CRT's sometimes interfer with sound
equipment... So not having to turn one screen off
everytime I want to use a microphone would be
    convenient.
Yes, an LCD screen would probably be much more convenient. I much prefer LCD screens myself.
So, I'll simply be on the outlook for used LCD
    screens, then... Thanks!
You're welcome. Glad I could help.
Let me know if you have other questions.

  • I have had to buy an GRAID 4TB to back up my images as I am a photographer and have huge files.  Can I use my old timecapsule 2TB as storage for say 4 years of photography.  My imac is getting full.

I am a photographer and have huge files so  have had to buy a GRAID 4TB for backup and now have an old 2 TB time capsule not doing anything. Could I use the timecapsule as storage and transfer say a few years of images over to that and free up space on my imac.  I do have the images copied onto other hard drives but feel I need more copies in case of external harddrive failure.

Could I use the timecapsule as storage and transfer say a few years of images over to that and free up space on my imac.
Can't give you a definite answer as I don't use a Time capsule, but if it is not being used for anything, why not try it out? My guess is you could use it for miscellaneous storage if you wanted to.

  • I got a new iPod, can husband use my old one?

I recently upgraded to a 4th gen. iPod and my husband would like to use my 1st gen. iPod. I've done quite a bit of searching through the forums and haven't found an answer to my specific question- how do I disassociate the old, 1st gen. iPod from the iTunes library it's associate with? Based on what I have found, I'm thinking I need to 1. reset old iPod to factory settings then since my husband has different taste in music from me then 2. create separate iTunes library for each iPod, which I did already download that document. I tried to create the separate libraries, but then realized I need to change the settings on the first gen. iPod so that's why I'm thinking reset it to original settings. Of course, I'd like to be able to do all this without changing the library and settings on my new 4th gen. iPod.
If it matters, I'm a Windows user.
Other information I've used in the past from these forums has been helpful, so am hopeful someone can help me. Thanks in advance for any help!
    --lizzieb75

deggie- thanks. We got his iPod restored and got his library set up. Now the problem I'm having is I did something to my library. It's now blank. I've been careful not to erase my iPod, but even when I plug it in, my library is blank. I tried following the directions for creating separate iTunes libraries for each iPod, but pretty sure I did something wrong, even though I followed the directions step by step.
    What do I do now?
