MalwareBytes is an excellent tool, however, since this is a Microsoft Forum I recommend the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool :)

Microsoft Malicious Removal Tool is great but it won't remove all malwares and it doesn't contain removal for all malwares. It is better to use Safety Scanner which contains removal for all malwares which are being detect by Microsoft Anti-Malware technology:

  • I just got a "warning system may have found viruses on your computer" message on safari

I just got a "warning: system may have found viruses on your computer" message on safari that mentioned system may have found 2 malicious viruses: Rootkit.Sirefef.Spy and Trojan.FafeAV-Download. Also a phone # to call for help in removing the viruses. I have a MacPro I don't know if this is for real or spam. I had to force quit safari and turn off and then back on my computer but when I clicked on safari again the message was still poping up. Does anyone know and can anyone help me? Thank you.

Fraudulent spam. Not only is it impossible to diagnose your computer's health, virus status, etc, by visiting a web page, Macs don't get viruses of that kind. Calling that number would have prompted the perpetrator to take your money and/or gain remote access to your computer.
Quit Safari completely by holding down your cursor on the dock icon and choosing Quit when you see it appear, or hitting cmd-Q when the Safari menu is visible on the top left of the screen. Once it has completely quit (there is no light under the dock icon), hold down the Shift key on the keyboard, and launch Safari again.
Safari will normally try to reload whatever webpages were open when it last quit; holding Shift will cancel this behaviour. And try to avoid going back to whatever webpage you were on when you got the popup.

  • Chrome says I have a virus on my computer

How can I run a diagnostic?

Chrome does not have the capability to determine whether you have malware on your computer or not. It could identify a malicious site and warn you not to go there, but it cannot warn you about having a virus.
Most likely what you are seeing is a pop-up on a web site that has been hacked, and that pop-up is trying to scam you into installing "anti-virus software" that is actually malware. (Most likely Windows malware, as there aren't any Mac malware scams behaving this way at the moment, to my knowledge.)
Can you provide a screenshot of the warning? Press command-shift-3 to take a screenshot, then click the camera icon in the toolbar of the post editor here and attach the resulting file (which will be found on your desktop).

hello, mozilla will never send out such kind of popups - this is a scam trying to trick you into downloading more mailcious stuff. in case you're getting such kind of pop-ups regularily though, this by itself might be a symptom that there is already adware/malware present on your system.
<br>in this case please try the following:
    # [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems|reset firefox]] (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
    # afterwards go to firefox > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
    # finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] to make sure that adware isn't present in other places of your system as well.

I'm not sure what "virus" you're referring to. Your tags indicate DNSChanger, but that did not involve Java and has been dead since November of last year. Further, the malicious servers used by DNSChanger were shut down in July, so you would have had serious internet problems starting at that time if you were infected with DNSChanger.
If you are referring to Flashback, that particular update does not remove the malware, but if you simply run Software Update and let it install whatever is available, you will be fine and the malware will be removed, if present. See About the Flashback malware.

Some have found relief just by reinstalling, but it is more than likely incompatible third-party applications that slow it down.
You will have to investigate to see what it is.
Open Activity Monitor and see if anything is using a lot of CPU% or Memory. If they are, check to see if there is an update for them.
Another place to look is the Console. See if anything is logging repeating messages with throttling and/or respawn in the All Messages list.
Sometimes it is not that easy to root out the problems, but if you have anything that purported to clean, protect, optimize, maintain, or flush your system, then that is likely the cause.

Doesn't really sound like a virus.

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

No you do not have a virus. That is a standard web popup usually, that tres to get up to download a "removal program". The removal program is the virus or similar.

  • I am told I have 6 viruses. I am trying to buy softward, but all three cards are declined. How can I protect my computer?

I am trying to buy a mac protector. My computer is telling me I have 6 viruses. I am shocked b/c I thought Mac didn't get them, but anyway, every credit card I own is being declined.  Help me...I am trying to save my computer.

Your Mac does not have any viruses. There are no viruses that affect or infect OS X, not one.
You have fallen for a trick, which is called social engineering. This is malware - a trojan, and a phishing scam to get your credit card number to take your credit card account to the cleaners.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
There are other things that need attention:
Your above posted system details show outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks that you should update.

The update alerts are fake, and are intended to dupe you into installing malware or disclosing private information so that your identity can be stolen.
You might get the alerts when visiting a website that has been hacked. Don't visit the site again. If applicable, notify the site administrator of the problem, but don't send email to an unknown party.
If you get the alerts when visiting more than one well-known website, such as Google, YouTube, or Facebook, then they may be the result of an attack on your router that has caused you to get false results from looking up the addresses of Internet servers. Requests sent to those sites are redirected to a server controlled by the attacker. It's possible, but less likely, that the DNS server used by your ISP has been attacked.
    Back up all data.
Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
              8.8.8.8
              8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. If the fake update alerts stop, see below. Otherwise, ask for instructions.
The router's documentation should tell you how to reset it to the factory default state. Usually there's a pinhole switch somewhere in the back. It may be labeled "RESET." Insert the end of a straightened paper clip or a similar tool and press the button inside for perhaps 15 seconds, or as long as the instructions specify.
After resetting the router, quit the web browser and relaunch it while holding down the shift key. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. Do the equivalent if you use another browser. Open the Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.
Then go through the router's initial setup procedure. I can't be specific, because it's different for every model. The key points are these:
    1. Don't allow the router to be administered from the WAN (Internet) port, if it has that option. Most do.
    2. Set a strong password to protect the router's settings: at least ten random upper- and lower-case letters and digits. Don't use the default password or any other that could be guessed. Save the password in your keychain. Any password that you can remember is weak.
    3. If the router is wireless, or if you have a wireless access point on the network, use "WPA 2 Personal" security and set a different strong password to protect the network. If the router or access point doesn't support WPA 2, it's obsolete and must be replaced.
During the time the router was compromised, you were redirected to bogus websites. If you ever connected to a secure site and got a warning from your browser that the identity of the server could not be verified, and you dismissed that warning in order to log in, assume that your credentials for the site have been stolen and that the attacker has control of the account. This warning also applies to all websites on which you saw the fake update alerts.
Check the router manufacturer's website for a firmware update.
If you downloaded and installed what you thought was a software update, ask for instructions.
