  • Scan for wireless networks doesn't find Airport Express

    Help please!
I've been trying for days to set up my Airport Express.
When I do the scan for wireless networks, my computer seems to find every network in my block of flats except my AX. I found it once or twice, and then used the AirPort Utility to do the setup. But then it lost the connection on restart. Now the AX connection is nowhere to be found.
Similarly, when I scan for AXs using AirPort Utility it finds nothing.
I don't think it's the AX that's the problem, because I have a wifi blackberry and when I scan for wireless networks on that it finds the AX (although it won't connect). And I don't see how it can be my computer (which is not a Mac) because it finds about 10 other networks.
What am I doing wrong? I'd be most grateful to anyone who could explain it to me in language a 2 year old could understand, because it's all a complete mystery to me.
I use a BT Home Hub for wireless internet, if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!

If there are lots of other networks in the area you are probably getting a lot of RF interference.
Can I also add, the AX has relatively weak signal compare to some of the desktop wireless routers due to its size and small power source. If the interference is really a problem, AX might not be your best solution. You should consider upgrade the AX to something more powerful like the AEBS/n. Get the N version so you have a choice of moving your wireless network out of the crowded 2.4GHz band and move it into less populated 5GHz band.
    Just my 2 cents.

  • Network can't find airport express

I just added a time capsule to create a new network.  I previously had an older network run by an airport express. I reset the airport express to factory default so i could have it join the new time capsule network.  But now the time capsule network doesn't see the airport express, even whe  its connected by ethernet to the time capsule.  Thanks.

Your AirPort Express is still trying to find the old AirPort Extreme.  You need to reset it and reconfigure it to connect to the Time Capsule.  First I'd try connecting your Mac to the Express with an Ethernet cable to see if that allows AirPort Utility to see it.  If that doesn't help, do a reset per these instructions.

  • How can I delete events, I keep getting multiple dates for an event, have deleted and then continue to re-appear. Any suggestions?

Birthdates entered into the calendar become multiple events. In one case it has repeated itself over 200 times. I have manually deleted these events at least 3 times and they continue to reappear. Any ideas how to correct?

One can delete it from one's computer. In the finder go to homeuser, movies, imovie events, delete the footage.
Then reopen iMovie and see if that helps.

  • How do I enter my existing 26 character wep network key on my airport express. I have tried using a preceding $ to no avail

How do I enter my existing 26 character wep network key on my airport express. I have tried using a preceding $ to no avail

The WEP standard provides support for either:
A 10 hexidecimal digit or 5 ASCII character key for 40-bit WEP,  OR
A 26 hexidecimal digit or 13 ASCII character key for 128-bit WEP
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AirPort Express will be hashed differently than on a non-Apple client and vice versa.
In addition, the 802.11n AirPorts do NOT support either 40-bit or 128-bit WEP in the "n" Radio Mode. You will have to switch to one of the non-"n" modes to access these wireless security options.
When operating in 802.11n, the only WEP option is the WEP (Transitional Network Security) mode. Note: This mode only supports using 13 ASCII character keys. This would be the reason that you are not able to enter a 26 hexidecimal digit key.

  • Adding new Computer to my Home Network and I have a WRT54GS .V5 Router

I have a existing home network connecting a HP laptop and a Dell desktop and all is well. Now however I bought a new Lenovo laptop with the Vista OS with SP1 and I would like to connect it to my home existing home network. I know this might be a rather simple question BUT I am not great with networks and I set up my home network years ago and I draw a blank on how I did it. There is one CD I found that I marked with the words Remote Linksys Install on it and there is one file on it named NetSetClient. Not sure why I kept it and I do not remember what it does but might help in getting my solution.
    Please help the network novice

As your linksys router is configured and its working on 2 other computers perfectly fine, so you dont have to run the CD again on your new computer. Is your new computer is a Wireless computer, So on your New computer, in the system tray, Right click on Two computer Icon and select "Connect to a Network".. selecte your Wireless network... type in your security key and click on Connect. After this try going online.
If you new computer is a Wired computer, Just plug in the cable from your New computer to the Router and you will be able to go Online.

I'm having lot of instability in my home network since the last airport update. Am I alone In this?

Just curious. Have you opened disk utilities application in the utility folder and select your drive, and run repair permissions. This may or may not help. It also may take awhile if it has never been done. Good luck!

  • Trying to set up wireless network on PC with Airport Express

I'm helping a friend set up his network with AirPort Express. He's got a modem attached to his PC, and currently has a router that sends a wireless signal to a receiver on the PC in the other room. Now he's added a Mac, and the old router/receiver doesn't work with Mac. So he bought an Airport Express.
I've turned on the Airport, and first I connected the ethernet cable from the modem to the AirPort. Per the AirPort utility I put on the PC, it couldn't find it (got the flashing amber light). So then I took out that ethernet, and I hooked up the ethernet directly from the CPU to the AirPort. Suddenly, it was found, and it took me step by step through the set up. It asked for password info from our internet provider (??why would I have that info??), so we just hit "enter". Then it couldn't set up the network, and said to check the "manage network settings". I've tried everything. Not only can I NOT manage to create a network, but now NEITHER ethernet cable will cause any recognition in the AirPort. All I get is the blinking amber light. I'm about to throw all the computers out the window...it really should not be this difficult. I've set up networks in my own home, before, with both PC and Mac, and never had these problems. So, now, I've had to relink up the old router/receiver in order to send out this call for help. Can anyone suggest anything else to try before I use these computers for target practice?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jennifer
P.S. The main PC w/modem is on Vista with service pack 2.0...since I can't even get that one working with AirPort, I hardly think it matters what the other computers are...

I had some initial problems too. Make sure that you have the latest Airport Utility in the utilities folder. I used that to correct the problems I had when I first got Time Machine. I recommend resetting everything through there to get it working right.
Mine is not set up to run an n network because my macs are all g and b compatible. Does the airport utility see the time machine? And if so, does it have a green light in the utility?

  • Extend Airport Extreme Network via Ethernet to Airport Express

I am trying to extend a gen 4 Airport Extreme by hardwiring ethernet to a 2nd gen Airport Express and will add a second Airport Express if I can get the first one to work.  I have a large network with a 24 port switch and aiport utility 6.3.2 (most recent as of this date)
    First question:
When expanding my network using the hardwired Airport Express can I name the new network anything I want or should it be exactly the same as the Extreme Network.  I would prefer to name it differently so I can keep track of which network my devices are acturally joining but I will be happy simply to get this to work either way.
    Second question:
After repeated attempts to configure my hardwired Aiport Extreme, I get the following yellow status error:
    Yellow Internet Connetion
    Yellow No DNS Servers
    Yellow Conflicting DHCP Range
    Observation:
Many of the suggestions here and the link posted in a previous post are not based upon the most recent Airport Untility software so that may contribute to my lack of success so far.  I am using the most recent version.

Even though the express was hardwired to the extreme during the set up process it was choosing to "extend" the 5 ghz network which I have activated on my extreme.  I assume this is okay.  It seems to be.  It offered me no other option during the set up.
Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands will be extended if the extending device supports dual bands.
I configured the express by plugging it directly into the LAN port of the Extreme.  Once configure, I plugged the express into my 24 port switch. It worked.
That's a good way to do things. If the Express works when connected directly to the Extreme, and doesn't when you connect it elsewhere on the network, then you know that you have a wiring or switch issue somewhere.
I choose to keep the express network name and base station name the same as those on the extreme.  They worked.  Since I really want to keep track of which network I am logged into, I later changed both the network name and the base station name for the express and it seems to all work under the new names.
Either will work, as long as you don't mind logging on and off of networks to switch. Most users prefer to have one "big" network. Then, they can walk a laptop from one area to another, stay on the same network and the Mac will automatically switch to pick up the strongest signal from the closest access point.
I activated the 5 ghz on the newly configured and newly named express.  It seems to work.
    As it should.
While configuing the express I got the error message metioned above a couple times.  I kept trying the same procdure with out changeing anything and eventually it worked.
I can't duplicate that issue, but glad that things worked after a few tries.
Since my AppleTV on the second floor has difficulties connecting with the extreme, I am thinking of plugging it in to the express directly.  How do you feel about this?  WOuld I be better off running another separate ethernet wire off the switch?
Always the best plan to connect any network devices using Ethernet if you can. The best networks are the ones with an Ethernet "backbone".  You can connect the Apple TV to the Express or the switch, whichever is easier. Personally, I prefer to connect devices to a switch if possible just to keep things simpler and make any troubleshooting easier.
This whole system with an extreme, 3 expresses, 3 appletvs, 12-14 cameras, a 24 port switch and up to 50 devices on the network at one time (computers, phones, ipads, etc, etc) works reasonably well considering the demands I put on it.
That's quite a home network. Glad that things are working. I am sure that you notice better wireless performance now with the two AirPort Express devices wired into the Ethernet backbone.
If we could get more users to set up their networks this way, most of the complaints that we get about slow wireless, intermittent connections, etc would go away.
It's not easy to run the Ethernet cable for some users, but I have yet to hear from the first user who ever regretted doing it.

I get this  problem every day or two when trying to connect my ATV 2 running 5.1.1 to iTunes 11.0.1 on an iMac running OS X 10.8.2 (though it started happening with earlier releases of both ATV software and iTunes. I think it started happening regularly following the installation of the ATV 5.0 software, with I think iTunes 10.6 or thereabouts.) They're connected over WiFi via an Airport Extreme basestation.
The TV simply shows a black screen with:
'Could not connect to "<iTunes library name>"'. 'Make sure the computer is on the same network as your Apple TV , the iTunes version is up to date, and iTunes is running.'
I've found the way to fix this problem when it happens is to restart the Apple TV (Settings>General>Restart). This always seems to correct it and allows me to connect to iTunes successfully once again, but the problem always returns sooner or later and I've not been able to determine what triggers it exactly. It  seems to happen more often if the iMac running iTunes has been put to sleep with iTunes running and subsequently woken, but it also happens sometimes when I wake ATV and try to connect it to a freshly booted iMac and newly launched iTunes.
I keep hoping a new release of ATV software will fix it but neither 5.1 nor 5.1.1  made any noticable difference and neither have newer releases of iTunes.

  • What is the proper way to extend 2nd generation time capsule network to 2nd generation Airport Express?

I have a Simultaneous Dual Band Time Capsule. Up until now, I have been extending the network with the Airport Express (2nd Gen, the 802.11n model). Since it was not simultaneous dual band, it was extending over the 2.4 GHz band so as it could extend b, g, and n and support my iPhone at 2.4 n as well as my iPad and MacBook Pro at 5 GHz.
I just bought the new simultaneous dual band unit, which theoreticalkly should be able to extend both bands.
Now, it is not that simple. I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on. I also still have the old Express which I have relegated to another part of the house.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule. Which one do I join? How do I know that both are extended? When I connect to the <SSID 5GHz> now my iPhone can see that one and connect to it, so I am assuming it is NOT going at 5 GHz.
And I have no idea at all what the guest network is doing....
Does anyone have any insight into tthe proper way to configure all the units, and what I can expect? My network is as follows:
                                                                                             Airport Express (Simultaneous Dual Band)
Cable Modem > Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual Band) >
                                                                                             Airport Express (802.11n, last gen)
I want to run guest network (hopefully simultaneous dual band) and personal network. I want the new express to run both bands just like the Time Capsule, and for the old express I want to know which of the two bands I am extending.
    Thank You!

I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on
Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be extended.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
This likely indicates that the Time Capsule has been setup to use separate names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, instead of the default, which uses the same wireless network name for both bands.
In order for the AirPort Express to be able to extend both bands, the Time Capsule will need to be configured so that both bands use the same wireless network name.
Then, configure the AirPort Express to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule, and it will extend both bands.  At least, that is the way an AirPort Extreme works, and I assume that the Express is the same. I don't have an Express here to test, but will in another day or two.
The location of the Express is important, since the 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. You may need to experiment by placing the Express closer to the Time Capsule than normal.  With an AirPort Extreme, I find that the Extreme must be located no more than about half the distance from the main router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you continue to use the previous model Express to extend as well, it too must be configured to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule. Configured this way, the Express will extend the stronger of the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz signals, so it will likely extend the 2.4 GHz band unless it is located close to the Time Capsule.
To find out which band the previous model Express is extending, locate a Mac laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. The info displayed will indicate whether you (and the Express) are connecting using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
