Have an iMac with its' orig OSX version 10.5.8 Would like to use iCloud, but need the proper steps to upgrade
I am ready to purchase Snow Leopard but see that I have a version of my OSx that won't let me... so to get there, what do I need to upgrade to first, second and then finally to Snow Leopard?
Many thanks.
There is no free upgrade to Snow Leopard, you have to buy it. In the US, call the Apple online store at 800-MY-APPLE, and buy Snow Leopard off the legacy products list. Make sure that your system meets these specs for Snow Leopard.
When you get it, insert DVD in drive, and proceed. 10.5.8 Leopard comes just before 10.6 Snow Leopard, so there are not any interim operating system updates required. After you install the Snow Leopard DVD, run Software Update until there are no updates left. Of course, you should have a system backup before doing the upgrade.

I have HughesNet satellite for an ISP with a capped amount of Internet capacity. How can I use iCloud but adjust the time it is on to conserve my Internet allowance and not have to back up my information all the time?
Thanks Roger W1,
Yes, I was using iTunes to sync over cable without problems since orinigal purchase in 2011 and using 10.6 w/o problem. There was an "update" in Nov 2012 that crashed the sync service. I went to the Apple Store and reviewed the problem with the Geniuses there. It was discovered at that time that the update included mandated use of iCloud but enough of the un-updated code remained that he was able to patch functions to allow Microsoft Office to still sync over iTunes.
This March (+/-) there was another "update" to 10.6 that totally destroyed the patch that was in place so there was no sync service available between Microsoft and iTunes what-so-ever. Then recently, because of some unknown process, all my notes, contacts, and calendars were erased in both my Apple utilities and Microsoft utilities.
After many hours of frustration I was able to recover most of the information to the Apple utilities only, but those were unstable. At my visit to the Apple store it was suggested that an upgrade to 10.8 might solve the stability problem. That it did but being connected to the iCloud all the time keeps using up all my Internet time and I have nothing left to check emails or do research.
This, to me, is not my problem but one created by Apple. I have searched the Internet and support groups and there doesn't seem to be a solution.
The "aircraft mode" turns off all other communication functions and is not acceptable. Neither is disconnecting/turning off Airport on my MBP.
Thanks,

Hi Guys! I have an Imac with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and bought a wireless keyboard. Unfortunately I can´t use the volume buttons on the keyboard. I have checked almost everything, does anyone have any good idea?
Hello, try kguy's solution here...
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2332457?start=0&tstart=0
First, Go to System Preferences, keyboard, and click on the Keyboard tab
Make sure that the checkbox by "Use all F1, F2, etc, keys as standard function keys" is NOT checked.
Next, click on the Show All button, and select Bluetooth. You should see your Apple Wireless Keyboard listed on the left side of the screen.
Click once to select it, and then click the gear icon at the bottom of the box, and choose Disconnect.
Power off the keyboard by holding down the power button on the keyboard for a few seconds until it show "keyboard Off on your imac screen, then turn it back on again.
The device should appear once again in your bluetooth list.
Try out the volume control buttons now, and see if that cleared things up -
I have an iMac with Mac OS X, version 10.6.8. Should I update the software?
You posted in the iPad forum, just in case you don't realize that. If you are asking if you should update in reference to using an iPad with the iMac, Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is the minimum system requirement in order to sync an iPad with a Mac now.
If the question was in reference to updating software in general, you might want to ask here.

My mac mini is not updating its software to OSX Lion v10.7.5, which I need for iCloud. I would like to use iCloud on my desktop along with my iphone and ipad but the auto updates are only upto 10.6.8.
You need to get the newer version from the Mac App Store.

I just purchased this movie on Thursday, May 15, so just a few days ago. I have never had any trouble whatsoever since I have been in Vietnam. I have downloaded several movies and even music and they have all synced to my respected Apple products except for this purchase.
Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean by studios and different versions. Could you please explain?
I checked my purchased list in my purchase history under my account and there are no hidden items. -

I am a teacher who would like to use my Ipad2 in the classroom -but out school only has projector that has VGA inputs. And just to complicate thing I was to use it wirelessly (I have an Itv also). Can I get true mirrioring?
The one you are looking at I believe is an older model and does not have very good reviews for working with an AppleTV2 / iPad 2 setup.
Here is the one that has worked for our district:

I can't say if the one you are referring two works or not, however I can say that based on the reviews, it looks like you may run into problems with the $45 version. -
in a future version of ibook author would be very useful to provide for the creation of shared content online.
Teachers can collaborate on the creation of a text. Very useful for teachers to collaborate in the network. sharing sharing sharingAs always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

Hello! How I can cancel my iCloud account? I would like to use alias but I have create the second account by mistake.
Now, user's name for one alias is unavailable!
Thank you! LGTo the best of my knowledge you have now unfortunately blocked yourself: you can't cancel an iCloud account and as you've got the address there you can't add it as an alias, and I don't know of any workaround for that.

I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. When I turn FCP X, I usually have 2.5 RAM free and the program works normally when I edit. The issue is importing video. I use a Sony HDV camera to import from miniDV tapes, and Apple says Sony HDVs are supported. Yet every time I'm importing, it works normally for 10-15 min, then the amount of free RAM quickly (yet gradually) is reduced to almost zero (I used Memory Clean to dicover it) and then FCP X got frozen and I need to force quit it and start all over again, to work for another 15 min. Horrible! What is it?
Are using 10.0.7 (the latest version)?
Memory problems seem to have been alleviated with 10.0.6 and 10.0.7.
Please post the screenshots of Activity Monitor, as Tom asked. This will at least let us see if it is FCP X itself gobbling a lot of RAM or if you are suffering from the problem of OS X not releasing "Inactive Memory" in a timely manner - an issue that has been there for a long time :-(
You didn't mention whether you have the 27" or 21.5" iMac. Unfortunately, in the 21.5" adding RAM is a big hassle. But if you have the 27", then seriously consider upping the RAM. It is quite inexpensive, from the likes of Crucial or other reputable third parties. -
I have an iMac 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. I'd like to Lion, in order to use iCloud, but the specs indicate I don't have enough memory. How much memory can I add? And will this upgrade allow me to install Lion?
I believe your model iMac can address 3 GB RAM; the minimum for Lion is 2 GB - however, that is an absolute minimum for very light use. You would be much happier with a minimum of 4 GB.
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
(You can install 4 GB, but it will only be able to address about 3.1 - 3.2 GB) -
I would like to keep ecloud but when they ask me my account number I cannot answer being away from home for a month. Do I really need to give account number? Can I give it later when I go back home?
iCloud does not have an account number - it's identified by the Apple ID. Where are you being asked for this? Have you received an email telling you that your account will be suspended if you don't click a link and enter some personal information? If so DO NOT follow the link and DO NOT enter any information - it's a scam designed to get information that can be used to steal from you. Apple does not threaten to close down your account.
If you've had such an email, look closely at the 'From' address - if it's not from apple.com it's a fake - often these emails are from 'aple.com' or 'appple.com' or some domain with 'apple' as a sub-domain. If you hover over the link (don't click it) you are likely to see that the domain is not apple at all.
If you are in doubt, copy the email and post it here but remove your own address.
