Have i killed my machine?

I have a computer which is about two years old. It has a P4 M900M2 board and a Radeon GF 7300GT graphics card. Everything was fine until i decided to upgrade one of my DVD writers to blueray. It turned out that my graphics card wasn't man enough, so i have to upgrade. As the new card hadn't arrived i thought i'd increase my ram too. I had to remove the graphics card to remove a stick to see what i had. Upon replacing the ram stick and graphics card and then switching the computer back on i now just get a message on the monitor that it receives no signal. Assuming i hadn't put the card back in correctly, i took it out again and replaced it even though it looked to be fine. Still the same, no signal. I have tried plugging the monitor into the board with the graphics card removed but i get the same...No signal. So, have i killed the card and or the board as well? The new graphics card has arrived but it needs a posh monitor, which i knew about, so i can't plug my monitor into it to see if my old card has gone to the great component heaven in the sky. I could plug my tv into the new card but i haven't got a clue if i would get a display on it without selecting to use the tv first. Problem is, i can't see what is on the screen to select watching on the tv too. I have noticed that on the old card, two of the gold contact 'pins?' are a couple of mm shorter then the rest. With the card placed flat in front of you with the monitor sockets on the left, the 'pins' facing away from you with the big heatsink underneath, it is the extreme left hand 'pin' on top. It is 1mm shorter than the rest. If you turn the card over with the monitor sockets still on the left but now with the heatsink on top and the 'pins' facing towards you, the other short 'pin' is second in from the right.Again 1mm shorter than the rest. Is this as it should be or have i damaged it? If i have, have i also killed the mother board? Before touching the components, i held on the the unpainted copper water pipe below the radiator and had my hands touching the inside of the case when removing and replacing the card and ram, so i don't think i've staticked it to death, or have i? The new blueray burner was in the case but not connected up at the time. I think the board is a 2.8 dual core, but i'm not too sure. The serial number is 7710690034 if that helps and a P4 M900M2.
Thanks for any advice.
Merry christmas, or happy december if you don't do that sort of thing

XFX is a hardware manufacturer, like MSI. Radeon is a product of ATI/AMD, a chipset manufacturer. Geforce is a product of Nvidia, also a chipset manufacturer.
Your card is a XFX Geforce 7300GT, with a Nvidia Geforce 7300 chipset.
Ha ha, after further investigation i realise what i've done. The old suspect(?) card is XFX, but my new one is an ATI Radeon HD 3600 256Mb PCI-E, hence the confusion. Or is it my age? Or the beer?
Anyway, now we have all had a gigle at the idiot who can't read, can anybody offer any advice re my original question? Catastrophic failure of operator, graphics card and or motherboard? What do you think?  Any opinions? Having to use my old computer which is doing my head in.
Vista loads fine, and reads my modem installation disc so i can get online. But i can't find my vista serial number so can't register. I can find my code for XP, hard to lose as it's on the side of the case, but it won't read the drivers on modem disc so can't get online.
I sometimes wonder what wrongs i have been guilty of in a past life to get penalised with anything computer derived like i do in this one

  • Boot Camp Killed Time Machine?

I'm going to try to offer the short version of this story...
Using Boot Camp I created a Windows partitiion and, using the Boot Camp instructions available from within the Boot Camp assistant, got XP Home installing. About halfway through the install (after it's asked you to configure your time zone and network settings etc.) it locked up. Having no other option, I powered it off. When I turned it back on it went into XP Home however I couldn't do the next step of installing the software off the OSX CD because for some reason it wouldn't read it.
I started the Windows installation again, this time it gave me a BSOD. So, I rebooted, held down the option key, went into OSX, ran Boot Camp and killed the windows partition. I remembered that I had difficulty with this copy of XP Home before and went after my XP Pro CD.
I started the Boot Camp process over again, creating the partition, however this time when the installation got to the section of picking the partition, the Boot Camp partition wasn't there. So I had no choice but to cancel.
Giving up and not wanting to mess with this anymore, I rebooted into OSX and once again deleted the partition. This time I noticed my Time Machine drive was no longer showing up on the desktop and the backups said they were delayed because there was no drive. So I reboot and I'm brought to a black screen saying there's no bootable media. I reboot, hold down option and boot into OSX. Still no Time Machine drive. I reboot again and once again see the "no bootable media" error. I'm stuck in a loop AND my Time Machine drive simply isn't mounting.
Being that I deleted the windows partion and OSX is the only thing that comes up on an option-key reboot - I don't quite get why it's looking for the Windows install disk. I also don't get where my external hard drive has gone. I should mention I have unplugged it and tried to force it to remount with no luck.
I want to run Time Machine and get things back to normal... but I can't because what has caused the mess to begin with has also killed Time Machine. Help??

Ok so I got my external drive to be recognized again by plugging it in via firewire but still no joy on the Boot Camp. I guess I'll just try again and see what happens.

  • Have I kill the iMac?

I was given a grape iMac running OS9 I had hoped to used in my Special Ed classroom for students to use a couple of applications that will only run on OS10 on a Mac. (The school is all Windows :P )
I started the upgrade to 10.2 with the disk I had purchased for an iBook that has since passed away and been replaced by my MacBook Pro.
I did not read the the "read me" file as I was in a rush and didn't find out until the upgrade didn't finish that I needed to update the firm ware.
I have tried to reformate and reinstalling from original start up disks but I get a message it is unable to do the reformat.
Have I killed the computer? What are my options?
Please help as I have a couple of student who could REALLY use the the two applications I would like to use with them.

This problem occurs a slot loading iMac g3's.
The downlevel firmware may prevent information appearing on the display. You saying that you get stuff displayed on your display?
The display works for the first boot, but goes downhill after that.
I have tried to reformate and reinstalling from original start up disks but I get a message it is unable to do the reformat.
You mean the original cd boots up? You get into the mac os 9 setup stuff. You run whatever : disk first aid? : to format the hd. The formating fails. What is the exact message? You might be able to install the software without reformating.
Have I killed the computer? What are my options?
No. ( Your in luck you have a lot of windows boxen laying around, probably with all sorts of problems, you can grab one of the vga displays )
The easiest option is to attach a vga display to the slot loading iMac. There is a connector hidden under a plastic cover under the machine. The cover is on the bottom toward the power connector. The vga display works fine. If you do not mind the looks, you can leave as is. Install the firmware & the iMac display comes back to life.
Please help as I have a couple of student who could REALLY use the the two applications I would like to use with them.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine. It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS. It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."
You can download the Mac OS 9 updates from the Apple site.

I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard.  Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • Is it possible to have two encrypted time machines on one partitioned hard drive?

I am trying to use encrypted time machines for two macbooks (15" and 11") with only one USB hard drive. The problem is that after creating one encrypted time machine for my 15" in a separate partition, the hard drive does not work when plugging it into my 11".
What happens is that I am prompted to enter in my encryption password for the 15" time machine on my 11". I enter in the correct password but it does not work (i.e., password fail). The interesting part is that when I plug the hard drive into my 15", I am asked the same thing, but the password entry works.
This is my current setup for my 1tb usb hard drive:
    1) 400gb for data
    2) 400gb newly encrypted time machine for my 15"
    3) 200gb unencrypted time machine (with old 11" time machine backups) for my 11"
The hard drive is formated/partitioned in RAID format.
All I want is to be able to have two encrypted time machines for each macbook on one single hard drive. Previously I was able to maintain two separate time machines (unencrypted) on this hard drive. I decided to try and encrypt both but seems like I am getting something wrong.

I am prompted to enter in my encryption password for the 15" time machine on my 11".
If I understand correctly, you want to mount the other partition. Are you prompted to do that? Does the password include any characters other than plain letters and digits? Are you using the same keyboard layout on both machines?

  • After installing Leopard, my G4 will no longer boot in OS 9.22. (Classic still works, but I need it to boot in OS 9.)  Any clues about what the Leopard installer might have done to my machine that rendered OS 9 boot unusable? What can I do to fix it?

After installing Leopard, my G4 will no longer boot in OS 9.22.
(Classic still works, but I need it to boot in OS 9.)
Any clues about what the Leopard installer might have done to my machine that rendered OS 9 boot unusable? (And what can I do to fix it?)
    Details:
    G4 Gigabit Ethernet
    Boot ROM version: 4.2.8fl
    Accelerator card added: 1.6 MHz
    1.5 Gig Ram
I have erased the partition that had Leopard installed on it.
    I zapped the pram.
In Open Firmware, I "reset-nvram", and then "reset-all"
I tried to reinstall G4 FW Update 4.2.8, but that must be done when booted from OS 9, and of course, that's the problem: it won't boot into 9.
I tried restarting from 9.2.1 DVD.
I tried restarting from an external firewire drive containing OS 9.2.2.
I tried moving a fresh OS 9.2.2 system folder into an empty partition on an internal hard drive. (Partition was created WITH OS 9 drivers installed.)
All attempts to boot into OS 9 give me the same results - grey screen - no spinning beach ball, no icons or logos - just a blank grey screen.
This machine still works fine in OS 10.3 and 10.4, and it worked fine for many years booting into OS 9, until I installed Leopard, and I haven't been able to boot into OS 9 since then, although I have done considerable research online and tried many things.
I have since learned that this machine does not support Leopard - 10.5. Fine, but how did it break 9.2.2?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for checking in, BDAQua.
    Problem solved.
In the docs that came with my Powerlogix accelerator card, I found this sentence buried:
"If you reset the PRAM, the NVRAM code for OS9 compatibility is cleared, so you will have to boot from the Firmawre Update CD and perform this process again in order to boot in OS9."
The "process" it's referring to is the process of setting up the NVRAM for booting into OS9 from the CD.
Fortunately, I was able to find the disk, and it worked as expected. I can now, once again boot into OS9.
Conclusion: My (unadvised) attempt to load Leopard on this old machine apparently reset the PRAM on the accelerator card and cleared the NVRAM code for OS9 boot. Although I did attempt to reset the NVRAM via Open Firmware, it did not reset it on the accelerator card.
So, thank you BDAQua, for your "Ah yes" . . . that's all I needed to steer me in the right direction.
    Gratefully,

I don't have a working time machine and icloud has caused the relevant folders to disappear from all my machines, iPhone, iPad and iMac as well as thge MacBook Air I was working on. HELP!!!

    Hi,
There is NO need to put your whole questing in the "Questing Heather" therefore you can TYPE here. In the Text window as I did to.
    Now to your questing:
So, you moved some Bookmarks and now 2 folders are completely empty.
I think that they dropped in a other folder during dragging the Bookmarks.
Did you check ALL of you Bookmark folder if they are there?
If you didn't delete the they have to be still there.

    Ok, here's an update...
I have bought my MSI G31 TM-P35 motherboard. Fitted in my old case, connected up all the wires, fitted my old cpu, used fresh thermal paste and fitted a CNPS9700 'ultra quiet cpu cooler' from Zalman. aFTER DECIDEING THAT MY EXTERNAL 1tB HARD DRIVE WAS GETTING A BIT FULL, I THOUGHT I'D GO FOR A BIGGER hdd INSIDE TOO. sO I HAVE FITTED A , sorry, forgot to cancel caps...  I've fitted a Seagate Sata 2 750Gb 16Mb. So now, i have new board, new cpu cooler, new hard drive, new blue ray dvd burner. So all is well? i hear you ask. Well no. I plug in the monitor and guess what? No signal
I only have old case, cpu, power unit and ram left to change. Could it be the power unit at fault? It doesn't smell burnt out. It doesn't smell at all. Could it be the cpu or ram? Usually when my car breaks down i can fix it by throwing money at it. When really desperate i throw my cousin at it. He is a mechanic and is used to it. What should i replace next? I could do with some good advice as i am starting to run out of money and my cousin would probably hit it with something heavy if he got it on his ramp

  • Constantly have to kill and restart EM agents

    Hello,
I am currently running EM GC version 10.2.0.4 on an AIX platform. I seem to be encountering frequent issues with various agents within our environment, in that I am constantly having to kill -9 the emagent process on various hosts and then having to restart the agent on these hosts afterwards. There seems to be no pattern in which hosts have to be dealt with in this manner as I am performing this process on different hosts each time the problem occurs. The agent is marked as unreachable in the GC console and then when I go to the host and perform an ./emctl status agent command, the result is that the agent is not running. When I attempt to start the agent using the ./emctl start agent command, nothing happens. I have to kill -9 the running emagent processes and restart the agent again using the ./emctl start agent command. This command is successful, however, it seems that in a week or so, I have to perform this action again on the same host or different host.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue after upgrading to version 10.2.0.4 of GC? These problems did not seem to appear nearly as often with version 10.2.0.3. Any assistance in troubleshooting this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Scott Kiskis

I also have similar issue, but i am running 10.2.0.3 GC and 10.2.0.3 agent. The agent processes keep running but get email from GC that the number of targets failed to upload. At least I see a pattern in my place: I receive a high cpu usage message for several hours, before the agent goes into this state.
emctl status agent shows it is down, but when i try to start, it fails as the emagent process is still running. I have to do kill -9 <pid> and then restart the agent. The agent works fine until I receive the high cpu usage message/email again. It seems to be operating system specific and I am trying to work with my sysadmins to figure out if anything is different in this server compared to others.

I have been using time machine to back up my Mac Book Pro 3.1 to my Time Capsule. Now the Time machine hangs up on "calculating time remaining".
Mac Book Pro - 3.1-15-inch  2.4/2.2GHz), Processor 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

This Time Machine software worked satisfactory until Monday Nov, 10 2014 and I have backups until that time. For several years, the software deleted the oldest back up to save the latest one. This is acceptable to me as I have off site storage that is updated every 3 months. How do I get Time machine working again?

I have spent a couple of days trying to respond to Linc Davis. Finally I figured it out . The following is a copy of data from my console from the initiation of a time machine backup until it gets stuck trying to calculate the time remaining. There is no indication that anything starts saving.  I copied about 3 minutes of data. This is probably way too much data, but I do not know what is relevant.
    Thanks for the help,

  • I have never activated time machine and my entire iPhoto library is missing. How can I restore the library from the last back up??

I am using a MacBook Pro version 10.7.5.
Ive just noticed my entire iPhoto library is missing except for tonights last sync.
I have never activated Time Machine. I am worried if i activate it now, i would have no chance of retrieving my iPhoto library.
Can i restore the iPhoto library from the laptops memory? Or have i clicked the wrong thing while syncing, with no chance of seeing my life again?

I was distracted at the time and have forgotten but I thought it was something like "are you sure you would like to replace all photos on this divise for the ones in your iPhoto library" I was confident as both the comp and my phone have been together for years now.
Im questioning wether the iPhoto program had its own problem before tonights sync. Syncing photos is something i would do regularly without problems, but I've had about a six month break.
Luckily i have made some folders and copied photos out of the iPhoto program. iPhoto was my default photo program and had so many photos from my travelling.
Also I remembered Facebook syncs photos privately, I trying to go way back in time to see if there are any i can save there.
I respect your honesty, if you believe there is no way i can get the program back to normal just say so.

Time Machine cannot find my external back-up drive when I click on the "select disk" button.  No drive is listed. I have run a Time Machine back-up to this external drive in the past.    Any suggestions

Does the disk appear in Disk Utility?
