Have I lost information on my iphone while an update was occurring?

Hi, I was trying to sync my iphone 3 onto iTunes but it wouldn't sync. A message popped up about how I needed to update my iphone first. I read somewhere in the support thread that if you do an update, you will not lose any pictures/music and contact info.
Since I initially tried syncing my iphone to my iTunes on my computer with no success, I proceeded to do an update, thinking that all I needed was an updated version before I am able to complete any syncing.
Soon after trying to update, a message came up saying that it was restoring my iPhone. I thought restoring my iPhone would wipe out all my valuable information so I ejected the phone immediately.
It looks like my iPhone is in a limbo state, all I see on the screen is a picture of the iTune logo and the UBS plug.
I'm very worry about losing my contacts/ music/ photos as I do not have any back up anywhere.
Can anybody tell me if I've already losts my information? Does anybody know what I can do to recovers possible lost data?
Any help is appreciated.!
Thanks

Thanks Roaminggnome,
I think while I was trying to sync my iPhone to my iTunes on my computer, instead of this happening, I think it was the other way around. (I was trying to sync as a backup).
While I was syncing, the 'hour glass' indicated 'syncing 1 of 1'. Now that I'm thinking about it, I just downloaded iTunes last week on my computer and there was only one song in it. So seeing 'syncing 1 or 1' is indicating that I might of wiped out my iphone by syncing incorrectly.
Can you tell me the steps to 'restore from backup'?
I tried looking for this on iTunes but couldn't find it.
I am so new to these Apple products.
