Have I lost my old photos forever?

So this seems to have come up in various forms but I haven't found an answer as yet. Basically I have all my photos backing up to icloud from various devices and has been for a couple of years now. My photostream is only 1000 photos long which puts me back to about may of this year but how do I find photos from before then? Specifically photos from my old iphone (which I no longer own)? I have 2 x ipad 2s, 1 iphone 5s and a windows laptop (sorry). As far as I see they are gone forever and Apple don't seem to have plans for being able to access all photos.
Was I stupid to assume that content backed up to icloud could be retreavable?

Unfortunately, I suppose that most of your pictures are not retreavable. After downloading/uploading your photos and other data which is currently on your device to another cloud service (Dropbox for files/photos or Flickr for photos) or a Mac/PC, you could try to retrieve some of your photos by completely restoring your device from a backup (Settings > General > Reset > ...). But if you asking me, I personally do not expect that you can get a lot of pictures back using this method, which unfortunately seems the only one.

  • Restored phone from old backup have i lost my new photos?

I was given a replacement iphone 4 because mine was stolen. After using the phone for a couple of weeks - and taking lots of photos on it - I plugged in my phone to my macbook in order to back up the new photos I had taken on the phone. While I was on itunes I was asked if I wanted to restore my old phone settings and install new software, and i said yes. It asked me if i wanted to carry on with this while the phone was synching with the computer and i said yes.
But then I saw photos from my OLD phone on my phone and also loading onto iphoto, with the computer asking if I wanted to download them.
I then couldn't find my NEW photos on my phone or on iphoto.
Have I lost the new photos?
I went into 'finder' on my computer, found 'backup; and can see hundreds of files, with the time that I was restoring my phone at same time as i was installing new software -
Are these files my new photos?
And how can i open them?
    Thank you!

yes, you have.  Restoring your phone from the other backup wiped out any previous data you had on your phone.  Since you never backed up before, there's no way to get any of those data back.

Hi when I open iPhoto it's says "What photo library do you want to use" Have I lost all my photos? I don't know what to do here can anyone help please?

Is there an item named "iPhoto Library.photo library" or similar in your "Pictures" folder, showing with an icon like a fan of pictures?
Or did you store your iPhoto Library in a different folder, perhaps on an external drive?
if you cannot find your iPhoto Library search for it with Find Any File, as described  by Old Toad in this post:

Download and use Find Any File to search for a file named "iPhoto6.Library".  It's a file unique to all iPhoto libraries.
FAF an search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, packages and system files.  If there's another iPhoto library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Lost old iphone, new iphone doesnt have any of the old photos. Is it possible to recover the old photos?

I had a iphone 5s with icloud on it. I dropped it in a river and was unable to find it. I then bought another iphone 5s a few days later, and I still have been unable to receive my old photos that were on my old iphone 5s. I had ios 7 on the old iphone, and I now have ios 8 on the new one. Hopefully I am able to get those photos back because I have photos from trips I took this summer. Is it possible to recover those photos and how?

You can recover the photos from an iTunes backup on your computer, from an iCloud backup, or from Photo Stream. You can also sync them to dropbox, box.com, Google Drive, Google Picasa, Shutterfly and several other photo sharing services. If you synced your photos to a photo app on your computer they will also be there. If you used none of the 4 ways Apple gives you to preserve photos and none of the dozen or more 3rd party solutions then they are lost forever.

After updating to itunes 10 I now get an error message that says there is a problem with the windows installer package. I have tried all the things that others suggested but cannot download itunes at all now. Have I lost itunes forever?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) (not for XP) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • HT1414 i had hooked my iphone4s up  to itunes, i didnt read it correctly and chose to sync it with my old iphone, which is the 3g. how do i put my new iphone back to how it was before. i dont have none of my old photos or text from my iphone 4s. HELP

I had hooked my new iphone 4s up to itunes. I did not read what they were asking correctly, which was to "set up as a new iphone": or "restore backup." i choose restore backup, and now it looks like my iphone 3g. I lost all my photos from my iphone 4s, text messages, bookmarks, notes, emails, basically everything important. So i want to know how to put it back to normal, how it was on my iphone 4s. Please help, i lost alot of information.

If you haven't synced again since this happened you may still be able to restore from the backup that was created at the start of the sync process.  First, without connecting your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to Preferences, on the Devices tab look at the list of backups and identify if your backup prior to this happening still exists.  You can hover your mouse over the name of the backup to reveal the IMEI, phone number and serial number of the phone that was backed up, allowing you to identify which one is your 4S backup.  If the backup exists, do the following:
Without connecting your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to Preferences, on the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically"
Now connect your phone to your computer.  When it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar right-click on its name and choose Restore from Backup, selecting the backup you identified earlier to restore from.
When the restore completes you can go back to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and re-enable automatic syncing if you prefer this.
This won't restore everything as certain data such as contacts and all iTunes media isn't included in the backup but at least you'll be able to get much of it back.

  • Have I lost my info, photo's video's etc.

Picked up my Playbook on the weekend & it displayed:
'Password entered too many times, playbook will be erased'.- Does this mean I will lose all my info, photo's etc?
Tablet has asked for me to restart from beginning. Tried to access my account on line, my email address has changed & system won't let me in. Can you please help?"
Have created a new ID with new email address, but don't want to enter it in incase I lose my info.

Can you elaborate where in Desktop Manager it is asking you to sign in? Blackberry Desktop Manager does not ask you to sign into anything from memory, especially not to backup.
If your email attached to your Blackberry ID is no longer available and you cannot remember the password to log in using it you will need to create a new ID - KB26361 - How to change or reset a BlackBerry ID password
If you have not done a back up then there is no way to recover items lost in a wipe - this is a security feature and the fail safe.
And if memory serves correctly after 5 incorrect passwords the playbook asks you to enter "blackberry" before you can carry on so to go to all 10 incorrect attempts with this failsafe is very hard to do by accident.

  • Why have I lost recently added photos from iPhoto?

My wife downloaded some photos of a recent trip to her iPhoto account, which fortunately also automatically saved on her iPad.  However, shortly afterwards the photos disappeared from the iPhoto folder (which still showed up in iPhoto with the same folder name but which was greyed out and empty).  I then downloaded all the photographs again from her iCloud account into the main photo directory.  This morning, trying to create an album of the best photos she found that the directly was yet again greyed out and empty.
Is this a common problem, and how do I get these photographs to remain on the computer hard drive?  I believe the iCloud account will only hold them for 30 days so time is pressing.
I am running the latest OS Maverick on an iMac.
    Thanks
    David

  • Missing old photos

    dear all,
please help. I have some how lost my old photos that were on my photo stream. I have tried an expensive app that did not work. the photos were over 18 months old and I cant find how to increase the album past 18 months. there is one photo i am desperate to get back as it is of our cat that was run over and it is the only nice photo i have of him!
I have tried to restore album via the iphoto setting and checked to make sure that i am on a setting where my photos go direct into one place. many, many thanks, D

If you are trying to restore photos from photo stream on iCloud, make sure you are signed into iCloud on your device and then connect to a WiFi connection and everything that you have available on iCloud will be populated back to your device. You can only get photos or any other kind of information that you have available on iCloud through a WiFi connection. Cellular data will not do the trick. Hope this helps your problems and Good Luck TO YOU !!

  • Old photos are not accessible in Messages in iOS 8

I upgraded my iPhone 5 to iOS 8 and the problem that I have is that the old photos received via iMessage are not accessible anymore. It just shows them as "?" in the Messages. Also in the "Details" view of the Messages they just appear as blank icons. I should clarify that the issue that I am facing is different from the one explained in:Messages Photos Not Showing: iOS 8 on iPhone 6. I do not have any problems with new messages/photos. The problem is with most (not all) of old Photos received in Messages.
Also, I recently purchased an iPhone 6 which I used iCloud backup to transfer data from my old iPhone 5, and I have the same problem with the new iPhone as well.
I'd appreciate if anyone could help me with this problem.

There is nothing wrong, at least the way that I understand it. When the camera roll reappeared in iOS 8.1, the photos that were in the camera roll were returned to your device again. Those were the photos that were there before you uodated to iOS 8. Users that have opted to particiapet in the iCloud Photo Library Beta do not have the camera roll.
IF you delete a photo from the camera roll and the photo exists in another album that you created on the iPad, then the photos will be deleted in those albums as well since the photos never existed in those albums to begin with. Those albums only contained pointers to the original photos which made them appear in the albums that you created in the photos app.

  • Cant open old photos!

I have a number of old photos from the system 7-9.x days that for some reason cannot be opened in Mountain Lion in Preview. Is there a way around this, or ws this my mistake that I made in not keeping a older OS 8.x Mac around? I also have some old palm Desktop files that I cannot open and I would like to retrview the TEXT in the documents. Anyone know of a way?

What was the file format of the photos? There might be something that can open them.
There are some online file converters, you might google for something like that and see if they can convert them to something openable.
To get the text, you might just right-click on the file and choose open with, Other...
Browse for TextEdit and see if you can retriev the text out of the file.

  • Restoring Old Photos - Actions

I have Photoshop's CS5 on a Mac.  Colin Smith has a very nice video on restoring old photos with Channels and then using Content Aware Fill with the Spot Healing Brush.
I have about 140 scanned old photos which I want to improve before putting them in a PhotoBook.  Can anyone give me the step by step Actions, with stops
and starts, so I can automate the process of cropping, improving color tone and Spot Healing these photos one after another and speed up the process?
I'd appreciate any help, suggestions, ideas.

restoring old photos isnt as hard as it seems you will be using mostly the image>adjustment comands when i usually edit i start off with adjusting the levels then i move on to the curves which adjusts your image so different sections are light and others are dark the next think i would do is move on to the hue and saturation this often seems overextreme as you dont what to turn a normal looking photo purple but adding a very slight change can often make a big difference. as an extra affect the photo filter can sometimes add alot to the photo. i often add a slight sepia tinge to my photos which makes them look very cool and vintagy.
the final think i would do is use the healing brush and fix blemishes and if this proves to be annoying as it sometimes can be as it makes certain sections look blurry the clone stamp tool is really cool! all you do is pick a section you want to clone over the top of a blemish then you click alt whilst clicking the area and you then position your mouse over the blemish and it will take whatever area you originally clicked on and place it ontop of the blemish (:
mainly i would sugest using the image>adjustment commands as they are really simple but really go a long way in cleaning up old photos
    hope this helped!

  • I have changed the dates of photos in an event, but the event is still showing the original dates.

I have a batch of old photographs that I have recently scanned and imported into iPhoto 11.  In iPhoto I changed the dates to the dates when the original photos were taken (between 1971 and 1976) using the "Adjust Date and Time" and "Batch Change" menu options.  This works fine as each photo now shows the date on which it was taken rather than the scan date which appeared when the photos were imported.  However, the event itself still shows the scan dates so it does not appear in the right place when sorting by date.  I'm finding this most perplexing because I have many scans of old photos (one goes back to 1900) and have been able to change dates of individual photos and the event has followed suit.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Within minutes of posting this question I fixed the problem.  It's just a matter of holding down the Option and Apple keys while launching iPhoto and  then repairing the library database from the list of options that pops up on the screen.  Easy really.  Just took me two days to work it out.
