Have I wasted my money going Mac?  Optical Disc Issue!

This is strange but when using OSX and I insert a disc in my DVD drive sometimes it sees it and sometimes it doesn't and it wont then let me eject it. However if I then restart my machine it will see it and let me eject it (so far).
The discs I've tried have been audio CD's and also the OSX Installation discs and I just cannot figure out a pattern to it. Just reinstalled the OS and worked fine as usual until I inserted the OS DVD again.
When this phenomenon occurs I cannot log out and test it as another user account as per Apple Supports suggestion as it goes to a plain blue screen with the timer wheel just spinning and also cannot restart without holding in the power button.
Its driving me nuts and I've spoken to Apple Phone support who just advise if it's a software glitch and I take it to the Apple store they will charge me and it will take at least 2 weeks...what so I do?
Works fine when booted into Vista every time...
Aaaargh

If the iMac is under one year old, you are covered by the one-year warranty.
I got my Power Mac G5 repaired for a hardware issue in three days, by taking it to an Apple Store. I don't see how any phone tech support person can say it will take two weeks without even knowing what is wrong.
If it was me, I would back up any personal data I have on the iMac, and reinstall Mac OS X from the original discs. Use the Option to +Erase and Install+. That would basically confirm it is a hardware problem, if the problem recurs, because you are using fresh installation. If the problem does not recur, you've fixed your problem; restore your data and rock on...
If you need more details on reinstalling Mac OS X, please post back.

  • Is it possible to easily run Microsoft office 2010 with access on a MacBook pro or have I wasted my money ?

Okay , first off thanks for any help in advance . I just purchased a MacBook pro for my daughter for college . ( finance major ) . Her class requires Microsoft office 2010 with access .  As you probably already know , and I have just learned , that is no offered for Mac. Is there an easy way To run ms office with access on a MacBook pro or have I wasted my money ?

All that matters is file compatibility. The documents look the same. I've been a professor, so I don't see any issues here at all.
Another option you may want to consider is this: Run Windows on the Mac:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Have I wasted my Money

Out of curiosity how many BT Customers have a Home hub 5 that is sable?
I have now had 3, all have had problems holding connections for no more than a day.
Currently using a Asus RT-N66U which is rock solid.
Seems a shame and a waste of my money that the all in one BT Hubs for me don't work.
Can't seem to get through to BT support, and have now given up and written off the £50 odd I have wasted.
Is there any department I can send this hub 5 back to for testing?

It's the modem which doesn't work, the rest is fine. I wish they would fix the firmware, and maybe unlock it at the same time

  • Have I wasted my money? Apple TV set up nightmare

I'm hoping that I've just been on the wrong track and someone can steer me the right direction!
I bought aTV a few months ago specifically for use in my classroom to mirror my ipad. Got home from store, opened box, no HDMI cable, cannot use without HDMI cable, back to store.
Go to school. No HDMI input into screen. Buy converter (HDMI to VGA) cord. Wait for it to arrive. Wont work, I think it needs a power source.
Buy a converter box, with extra associated cords. Wrong one. Buy another box, YAY, its the right one months later.
Connect up apple tv to board. Cannot set up due to proxy settings. Take it home again, set it up through home wifi on tv - works fine.
Back to school, wont work because it needs a user profile. Back home again.
Research how to configure profiles. User profile needs configurator. Configurator needs OS X upgrade. Slow net means there's a good 6 hours for that. Upgrade installed ... finally.
A few days later configurator downloaded. Plug atv in to imac at home via micro USB cable (yes its plugged in) to set up user profile according to these instructions http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5437?viewlocale=en_US
Apple TV not recognised by configurator or itunes - probably due to not being connected to wifi.
imac with configurator is in one room, TV and wifi in another. My latest frustrating block in the road is - How do I connect to the wifi with the atv, wont it need to be plugged into the TV via HDMI? I need it to be able to have it plugged into the imac in the next room to configure it. The wifi will cut out if unplugged. The imac has no HDMI input socket.
Do I really need to pull my office apart and drag my imac out to the living room so it can remain plugged in to power after connecting to wifi???? Please tell me I have something upside down and back-to-front!!!
Has anyone else had a nightmare similar to this one? I've always been a big apple supporter ... BUT ...

    A little more information:
"Apple TV works ONLY with HDTVs with HDMI cable, not included." Thanks for the info - I have it working with the smart board via a convertor box (HDMI to VGA), so please dont be condescending by telling me thats where I'm going wrong.
The problem is I can only get it working if I have both the ipad and the ATV connected to my iphone hotspot. I do not want this to be a permanent method of connection.
"I thought only guys didn't read directions. And Apple TV came with simple ones."  Yes I do realise that it should be a basic set up process in a normal household situation. I am looking for help with a different set up process. Thanks for the 'helpful' comment though.
"There is no requirement to load a profile on the ATV."  - If I want to configure it to connect through the department proxy server there apparently is, so the question is how? To find troubleshooting help on the net for that process is near impossible.
And as for plugging it straight into the ethernet - that wont help because the ipad will be connected via wifi and they are different networks so that wont work. The only way is for the apple to connect via wifi through proxy OR for me to buy another routing device such as airport. This would just be another added inconvenience though, especially when I'm changing classrooms every lesson.

  • If my peak "physical memory" usage is around 50%, is adding more RAM a waste of money?

I have a W700-DS with the T9600 dual-core and an SSD, and when running 4GB of RAM I'd notice that memory usage tended to rarely exceed 50%. Just for the heck of it, I just upgraded to 8GB of RAM, and now I'm curious as to whether I wasted my money, as the 4GB usage never hit 100%. One thing I did notice is that my "Windows Experience Index" went from 5.9 to 6.4, but I'm guessing maybe that's just marketing BS from Microsoft.
    Thanks for your opinions.

If you haven't checked it out already, take a look at what the Resource Monitor tells you. I'm "using" only abpit 3GB out of 12 right now, but 9GB is marked "standby" -- memory filled by SuperFetch with items I'm most likely to need. The memory is still availalbe for something else if Windows/SuperFetch guessed wrong, but if it guessed right, it's already there and ready to go. Thus the boost to your Experience Index isn't total BS. You may actually be find your system more responsive. For example, if you always start your morning reading email, then check a website, then finally open your primary work applications, having more RAM allows SuperFetch to predictively load more of this while you're doing something else.
Interstingly, as I was typing this, my In Use dropped to 2.7G, Standby has filled the remainign 9.3G and free is down to 0 (Hardware Reserved is a negligible 113MB).
You don't mention exactly what OS you're using, but I'm going to presume Windows 7 x64... with a 32-bit OS, you definitely would have been wasting your money with its nominal 3GB limit. SuperFetch wasn't quite as good with Vista, but there would still be some benefit there, I think. I have no experience with XP x64.

  • So I wasted my money?

Been a happy user of my 2nd gen ipod touch for the last year or so, but.....
Recently tried to download an app which wouldn't load as it required 4.3 - no problem I thought, just go and get the update only to discover that the 2nd gen doesn't have a 4.3 update and research suggests will not get any better IOS than 4.2.1.
More and more apps will require 4.3, that is a certainty so are Apple trying to tell me the ipod I bought brand new, paid good money for is now pointless?
I understand obsolescence, it's the reason I'm not typing this on my external 28.8k modem but to have a product effectively shunned by its creators in such a short timescale is a little disappointing and puts me off upgrading to a newer Apple product for fear of facing the same dilemma in another couple of years.
I hope to read among the responses (if any) that Apple will either release a 4.3 version for my ipod or at least maintain a library of previous versions of apps that will retain functionality once the app store goes out of bounds for us 2nd gen users

Thank you all for your replies, albeit if they did miss the point somewhat.
Yes, I know all my current apps will still work, I won't be able to upgrade them anyway so i'm clearly stuck with the ones I have - let's just hope that I never ever want to try something new.....
I always have a back up copy of my apps, I just feel a little saddened that as time goes by all I will end up with IS those old apps, an ever decreasing scale of functionality matched to the ever increasing list of unavailable apps.
It would be nice to have the option of choosing whether the features of an old app outweigh the features of a new app but it seems I will not get the chance to find out unless Apple release a 4.3 for my ipod.
My mention of a facility whereby previous versions could be made available can be demonstrated by my trying to download a new app to try out which would not install - access to the previous versions would at least give me the chance to try something new once in a while.
Effectively, my 2nd gen ipod will fall further behind with each new IOS that I cannot upgrade to that I will finally be bored by its limitations and likely discard it as I certainly won't be able to sell it which sad eventually still leads me to believe that without continued support for this product I have basically wasted my money...

Trying to copy ANY file from my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive spins for 45 minutes then fails. I hate this computer and WISH I never would have wasted my money. Any ideas? WD My Passport 2TB Drive, had to buy a program to make the POS read files. Copies that would take seconds from a Windows based machine never complete. I have to close the transfer or shut off the machine half the time. Worst computer I have EVER owned, crashes non-stop, constantly freezes, and seems like EVERY operation is more complicated with this thing. Literally, my 1997 Compaq was FAR MORE reliable and user friendly.

This is one of the messages I keep getting; The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in -- File Whatever -- can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)
I have copied things to the hard drive in the past, but it has always been incredibly slow, and now just seems to freeze and fail

  • HT4311 Hi, I am trying to use my phone in Japan. It is a PAYG phone purchased directly from the Apple web store currently with Vodafone. Have tried to purchase a sim in Japan but can not do. Help please! I feel as if I have wasted my money! Bought 5 iPads

    Hi again,
I have purchased 5 iPads and 1 iPhone 4S in the UK thinking if I invest in an Apple top of the range I am covered worldwide for usage. Apparently not!
Got the phone as a PAYG and use with vodaphone, but got it direct from Apple.
Any help to buy a microchip from Japan would be much appreciated.
I feel as if I have wasted my money.

    Hi @imobl,
You sound like an Apple support guy who hasn't been able to answer my questions.
To respond to some of the points you made,
    - I did not ignore Ocean20's suggestion. If you has read my post, you would have known that I took my phone to the apple service centre where they tried this restore on THEIR machines. I am assuming that Apple guys know how not to block iTunes. So I actually do not understand your point about me trying the hosts file changes on my machine. Do you not believe that apple tested this issue with the correct settings?
    - you also give a flawed logic of why the issue is a hardware issue. You mentioned that If I thought that the issue was with the software, i should try a restore and getting it to work. The problem is that my error (23), and many others comes up when the restore fails. And you would be astonished to know that not all errors are hardware errors. Sometimes even software errors prevent restores. Funnily enough Apple itself mention that 'in rare cases, error 23 could be hardware related'.
    - all Apple has done so far is replicate the issue. I don not know how anyone can conclude that the issue is a hardware issue.
And by the way, I am not certain that this is a software bug. Again if you read my Posts, you will notice I only want a confirmation,/proof that the issue is hardware related as they mention..
Please refrain do. Responding if there is nothing to add.
