Have iMac, MacBook Pro, & Aiport Extreme Base Station - WHAT ELSE?

I have an iMac, just bought a MacBook Pro (both have airport cards), and will have my Airport Extreme Base Station delivered soon.
Do I need to buy anything else (i.e. cables) to setup my wireless network (iMac, MacBook Pro, Printer, Internet, Email)?
Thanks for the information...

Dear MacChad,
What you will need is an Ethernet cable that connects your Airport Extreme Base Station to your "Internet connection device".
What this "Internet connection device" is will depend on how you are connected to the Internet with your ISP. Typical ways would be via Cable modem (supplied by your ISP in most cases), or DSL modem (supplied by your ISP in most cases).
Hence, the Ethernet cable will also be found with your "Internet connection device". This is the same cable that this device supplied for connection to your computer.
Note that Wireless LAN is not secure, therefore it is recommended that you take all precautions to protect your network. Especially if you do not want to share it with your neighbours.
Some suggested steps are:
1. Create a "Closed Network".
2. Assign a password to your network
3. Create a generic SSID (aka. Network name). One that DOES NOT reflect the fact you have an Airport Extreme Base Station, any Macintosh products and your name.
4. Turn on WPA encryption at the minimum. WEP encryption is too weak and is useless.
5. Utilize MAC address filtering, but entering the MAC address of both your iMac and MacBook Pro into your Airport Extreme Base Station's MAC Filter list.
I hope this helps.

  • Can't set up Aiport Extreme - base station doesn't have valid IP address?

I recently bought an AirPort Extreme to replace my old Linksys wireless router. I am have a cable modem/router supplied by my cable provider and I was using the ethernet cable to connect the modem to the Airport. However, every time I attempt to configure it I get the following message: "Your Apple Wi-Fi base station does not have a valid IP address." I tried to call Comcast to see if there is something I need to get from them, but they want to charge me ~ $45 to enroll me in wireless tech support! Anyways, I'm at my wits' end - please help if you can!

Hello MrRuminator. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Each time I attempt to connect to the internet with the AirPort Extreme I run into "Base Station does not have valid IP address -- make sure your base station is connected to your broadband modem..." error. What's odd about this is the fact if I simply plug the ethernet cable back in the older Airport (like right now), I'm able to access the internet once again. Have tried powering off and resetting everything, to no avail.
It still sounds like your modem is not "recognizing" the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).
Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • How To use MacBook Pro as airport base station?

I am trying to set up my MacBook Pro as an airport base station to share my Internet connection. I am running OSX 10.7.2. I have checked Internet Sharing, and checked "Share your connection using "Internet" to computers using: ______________." There are five options, but "Airport" is not one of them. Has this panel changed in Lion? So how do I share the connection?

Got an iPad, got a macbook pro running 10.6.4, got an ethernet cable running to my cable box.
Now how do I set up my laptop to be a wifi base station so I can access the net with my iPad?
Tried searching for a how-to here on Apple's site, got around 500 hits that had nothing to do with setting up a powerbook as a wifi base station. Seriously, Apple, this is worse than worthless, it's highly frustrating. You need to fix your support search.
And after you follow the directions in the link provided by JimHdk, you can get yourself a wireless router. Using a wireless router will eliminate the need to have your Macbook pro present and powered up every time you want to connect your iPad to the Internet via wifi. Just because your Macbook Pro can act as a router does not mean it should or that you have to use it as such. A router is specifically designed to do what you want to do.

  • Macbook w/Airport Extreme Base Station

I have a Macbook that I just bought 3 days ago. Like everyone else, I am having the same problem with wireless encryption.
However, when I turn off the WPA and just use WEP, I can connect but it seems to lag. What I mean is everytime I browse, it's almost like my computer needs to "reconnect" with the router. If I stay a a site for more than a couple of minutes the connection kind of goes to sleep. It shows I am connected but it just sits there, sits there, and then connects. When I am on WPA or wired I do not get this.
So, for my actual question, does the Airport Extreme Base Station have issues like this?
On Apple.com, people are giving it glowing reviews. On the net, the reviews are marginal at best.
    Current Setup:
    Macbook
    Linksys WRT54GX4 w/SRX400
    Thanks in advance!

I have several Linksys routers and also an Airport Extreme Base Station. I like the Linksys better. The AEBS has arguably better output power than my Linksys, but in my 1600 square foot house, it doesn't matter.
I also have a Macbook c2duo running OSX 10.4.10, and it drops off the AEBS just as much as any other router.
The downside of the AEBS is that it doesn't have a native web based management system. You've got to use the management tool to deal with the AEBS using SNMP protocol. It'd be nice if you had to manage 100 AEBS, but is a nuisance for home use. I found the latest realase of Airport utility (v5.2) to be very buggy on Windows XP - it killed my PC's abaility to negotiate a DHCP lease until I downgraded back to version 5.1. I ultimately went back to using my WRT54GS. The Linksys has lower throughput, but that only matters for specsmanship. The other thing is that Linksys can do multiple PPTP VPN pass through, but VPN pass through doesn't work on the AEBS unless you use bridge mode and static IPs.
I spent the cash for the AEBS, but in retrospect I would have rather put it towards memory upgrades, etc.

You would need to upgrade the memory before you can do anything else, you are using shared video, some features of Yosemite will not be supported, and at over 5 years old would be pushing it.
An SSD upgrade along with more RAM would help, might buy you time, or would be better spent on a newer MacBook Air or something else instead.

  • I am trying to stop my Xbox from connecting to my Airport extreme base station and only connect to my airport express extender.  Anyone have any ideas?

I have an aiport extreme base station in my living room and an airport express in my bedroom extending the network.  For some reason my xbox along with some other devices always connects to the extreme base station in the living room which has a very low signal.  Is there a way to setup a seperate network for my express extender so that I can connect only certain devices?  HELP

You would probably want your Express to join the network if an extender isn't required. Reset to factory settings and join the network.
If you do want your Express as an extender run an Ethernet cable between the Express and the Verizon router and set the Express up to be in bridge mode, with the same WiFi network name and password as your Verizon router.

  • I have a Cisco wireless router.  Can I buy an Airport Express plug in booster for a distant part of my house or do I need an Airport Extreme base station instead to make the Airport Express plug in booster work?

Can I buy an Airport Express plug-in wifi signal booster to connect to a Cisco wireless router, or do I have to buy an Airport Extreme base station to make the Airport Express plug-in work?

You would need either an AirPort Extreme or an AirPort Express connected to the Cisco router, with a permanent Ethernet cable connection.
Configure the Extreme or Express that is connected to the Cisco router to "create a wireless network".
Then, you could add an AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" to provide more wireless coverage for the network that the Extreme or Express would be creating.
Remember that the Express can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives, so it must be located where it can receive a strong signal from the "main" AirPort.
If you don't need the Cisco wireless signal, you could turn it off.....or use that network for guests or something similar.
The bottom line here......you always need two Apple routers if you want to extend the network wirelessly.

I have an Appl,e AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultaneous Dual_Band( MC340LL/A.  After updating the software, no devices can connect via wifi.

As suggested in another discussion area, (AirPort), I reset the AEBS to factory defaults. On the TV, I went to >Settings>General>Network>Configure Wireless>Wireless Networks. I could then see the generic "Apple Network xxxxx" on the TV. From my MacBookPro, I verified that I could connect to the TV by launching iTunes and noting that the TV was now visible in the "Devices" menu. Went back to the AEBS and ran through the "Setup" routine. I did NOT use the "Previous Settings" but instead, saved the old settings profile, created a new wireless network and new settings profile and enabled WPA2 Personal encryption. I then went back to the TV and went through the "Settings" routine again (as noted above). This time, after entering my WPA2 password, the TV connected to the network and problem was solved. Thanks.

    This AirPort Express:
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
It is the only Express with 2 Ethernet ports. All others are "old"
Apple does not specify a model number in their product information, but it is A1392 in the U.S. I do not know if Apple uses different model numbers in other countries.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station and xBox wireless

We have 2 macs with Airport Extreme Base Station connecting to Cable modem for internet connection.
Recently bought an xBox with a USB wireless adaptor. When xBox is connected to the wireless network, internet connection of other computers dropped out and no longer can use internet until xBox is disconnected from the wireless network. It is the same problem even other computers are connected to Base Station with Ethernet cable.
Any settings in Airport Utility might fix this problem ?

We didn't have any problem before using the xBox wireless.
There are 2 Macs (iMac 20" & Macbook Pro 15") and they're connected to the Base Station via wireless.
The cable modem is Motorola Surfboard SB5100i and there is no login required from ISP for internet connection. Yes, the modem is connected to the WAN port of the Base Station.
With the Clients computer network settings, we are using DHCP. We have also tried with static IP and didn't make any differences.
I thought it could be the compatibility issue between the xBox wireless adaptor and the Base Station and on the other hand, the wireless protocols (802.11N/g/b) are industry standard and it doesn't matter who made them, they should work together.
The only idea that I have now is to try with other brand of wireless router and it might be a quick solution for this problem.
    thanks,
    David

  • Airport Express Transmits To Airport Extreme Base Station Intermittently

I have an Airport Extreme set up as my base station wirelessly.  I also have an Airport Express set up to extend the range of my network.
The reason I have the air port express is that the walls of my house are very thick, so I thought that if I have an Airport Express, then I can jump the signal from one signal strength room to a week signal strength room.
The length of the house is within the 30m range.  Airport Utility occasionally can not see the AExtreme or AExpress but if I put both in the same room it picks both up.   At the low signal strength end of the house my MacBook or MacBook Pro Air Port Utility only picks up the AExpress located at this end of the house.  If I restart the AExpress then Airport Utility picks up both airports in the week signal room, then the Extreme drops out.
Q1 - Why does this happen i.e. only showing the nearest / clearest signal air port?
What I have established is that the connection to the internet is always through the wireless signal from the AExtreme (ADS Router connected directly to this).  I established this by switching off the AExpress at the week signal end of the house and finding a spot where the signal could be picked up.
Q2 - If the AEtxreme and AExpress are within the nominal 30 m range why cant my lap tops just pick up both Airports on Airport Utility.
Q3 - Can you set up both Airports such that one will boost the signal and if so how.
Q4 - When running AExtreme only why does the signal strength vary - even when sitting right next to the extreme?
    Thanks
    Alastair

    On this same topic;
We have a new Extreme base station that connects 1 MBP, (wirelessly), 1 HP Laptop (wirelessly) and 2 PC (via ethernet) to the internet.
All of the computers can see and use the Extreme base station and the printer connected to it via USB.
We also have an Airport Express that the two laptops can see. This has a printer connected to it as well via USB. (both are new Canon printers and all of the software for each, and their drivers are loaded on all computers).
Both the Extreme and Express have a steady green light, their own names and are set up on the same network.
Though my MBP can see both the Extreme and Express, neither "see" each other as far as I can tell. And, the printer connected to the Express cannot be seen in either Bonjour Printers, or anywhere else.
Also, in order to "attempt" to find the printer connected to the Express, I have to disconnect from the Extreme Base Station and connect to the Express.
How can I get the printer (connected to the Express) to show up in my pick list of printers WITHOUT having to disconnect from the Extreme and connect to the Express. Also, how can we get the Express to be connected to the internet via the Extreme?
All searches here and documents I have poured though do not address this issue and we'd really like to get this straightened out. I am willing to take a lot of time to do this, but do it right.
Can someone please help me with this?
    Thank you in advance,
    ~ J
