Have just bought an iphone - help

I have just bought an iphone in my lunch hour and thought I will charge it this afternoon at work so when I get home I can get on with activating it but it doesnt have a charger plug, just something that connects to the computer. Is this how you charge it?
Any beginners tips would be gratefully received.

Loobs, your iPhone should have come with a wall charger that you plug that USB cord into. It can charge from the wall or your PC with the same cord. Also your iPhone has an internal Li-ion battery. These batteries do not develop a charge 'memory' like batteries of old. It is actually best to not let it run down all the way very often as this will deplete its life span much faster. I normally charge mine every night and the battery still works as good as it did in July '07. As others have mentioned there is a quick start guide in the box that should answer most of your questions. The entire activation process is done through itunes and really takes less than 10 minutes to get it working and guides you through every step with ease.

try general>settings>reset>reset all settings and start up as an new phone.

Perhaps check to see if you're accidentally running two different versions of iTunes. There's some information on troubleshooting that in the Opening iTunes section of the following document:

I have deleted that previous back up and now when I connect this 4S to iTunes to sync, it sits in Backing Up "Julie's IPhone" with the candy stripes, it will not proceed further. iOS 4.2.1 is the most recent, and probably last, version that an iPhone 3G can run. If you need apps that require IOS 4.3 or later, you're stuck. You should have purchased an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S, all of which can run iOS 5.

I have a mac mini 10.5.8 It is a little old and will not support the new iphone 5 for syncing etc.
Do I need to purchase new software i.e. snow leopard or can I download something that will allow me to get the new itunes etc????

Syncing your iPhone 5 with iTunes will require Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later. You should be able to purchase Mac OS X 10.6 via the link below.

Photos on the camera roll can be included in an icloud backup from an iOS device (if camera roll is turned on). But getting the photos back from a backup is risky. Many users have performed restore operations from a backup only to discover the photos were not returned. icloud is primarily used to sync photos to other devices using photo stream - but only new photos taken after the stream is turned on in Settings>icloud will actually be synced, not old photos.
Settings>icloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage, tap the device's name and on the next screen, be sure Camera Roll is turned on.
IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album). You can then sync the photos to the iPad.
