Have lion thumbdrive already, want to install lion server

I purchased the Lion thumbdrive -- installed it on my Mac Pro;
now I want to upgrade my MacMini Server from 10.8 to Lion;
I put the thumbdrive in the miniserver and I get the following message:
"Waiting for App Store to download Mac OS X Server Add On."
So I go to the App Store and I don't find the Server Add On.
After hunting around on the "Store" I found the Lion Server for $49.99.
Went to purchase it and I get the following message:
"Because this computer is using OS X Server, you must purchase both OS X Lion and OS X Lion Server in order to upgrade. This will cost $79.98."
I don't think I should be required to pay the extra $30...
Anyone found a work around for this?

Upgrading from Snow Leopard will keep everything untouched, just the system will be upgraded. Nevertheless, you MUST bbackup your files, especially when doing an upgrade, even if it theoretically does not destroy anything. You write: ‘I have a ton of files and documents saved on here.’ Eactly from this reason, you MUST backup these files somewhere else than the disk inside your mac. What will you do if this disk dies one good day?

You install PPro to then install the bundled Encore, but you do not need PPro to run Encore (but be VERY careful if you try to uninstall Premiere Pro, that you do not also uninstall Encore)

Well, Tiger is OSX version 10.4 In addition there are sub-versions such as 10.4.2, 10.4.6, up to the latest sub version 10.4.11 (note, that is an eleven at the end). The information you report doesn't really fit into this pattern so we need to determine what exactly it is that you have installed.
Jumping ahead, if by "1.5" you really mean "10.5" that isn't Tiger at all but Leopard. To get that on your computer you will have to purchase a retail (discs black in color) installer set of Leopard from Apple online, from a retailer near you, or used. If you buy used make certain it is the black retail set of discs, not gray ones as those will not install on your computer.
One other thing added in edit. You say, "I have G4 Tiger and want to install PPC G5 1.5 GHz" A G4 is one kind of computer, a G5 is another. I think at this stage it would help greatly to determine what exactly it is you have since that will affect what kind of systems you can run. Go to the apple in the upper left hand corner of your screen. Select "About this Mac" then "more info" Copy and paste the information in a reply but remove the serial number. Can someone tell me why I want to install a server?

I was hoping someone can tell me if there are any benefits to installing Leopard Server. Here is my situation.
Running a small (new) photography business with my wife. We have,
Powerbook G4 1.5gig Laptop
Macpro Desktop.
Macbook Pro Laptop
Western Digital 1tb extrenal drive.
We use iCal to maintain our schedules, have our site hosted with a provider we are happy with, and other than that, I wondered if there would be any benefit to installing Leopard Server on the Powerbook G4, and connecting the other two computers wirelessly.
I am not to well up on server software, so I really just wanted to know if it would be worthwhile stringing the three computers together in some way. Please excuse my inexperience!

To be clear, you don't need Server in order to connect remotely to your files. If 'on the road' you will always have internet access, you could connect to your file server and get files. The difference with Portable Home Directories is that you'd have copies of those files synced onto your laptops (assuming that they have big enough hard drives) before you left so that you wouldn't have to connect to the server.
As for the iPhone issue, I've seen a few things about being able to administer machines from your iPhone, but I don't think that they really support too much in that respect. Once the SDK is released (next month?), though, I imagine that people will start writing lots of those sorts of applications. Finally, I forgot to mention in my previous message that if you are going to make one computer into a server, using OS X Server or otherwise, I think that the Mac Pro is the most logical choice. It will presumably always be in one place and can be left on and connected to the internet, whereas your laptops might at any given time not have an internet connection, be closed and asleep, or be flying at 30,000 feet on their way to Toronto. Plus, the Mac Pro is more flexible if you wanted to put some more internal hard drives in it or replace the hard drive if it fails, etc.

You will lose your app data unless you backup to the new computer and then restore from backup will all the app in the iTunes library of the new computer.

Can I install Windows Server 2008 R2 using Bootcamp? I do not want to install native, but may consider if that is the only way....

I already have Win 7 on an internal Bootcamp drive. It so far has worked well, Bootcamp performance drag is minimal, if at all. Now I want to install Win Server 2008 R2 and load a bunch of virtuals using Hyper-V Manager. The virtuals are already created. This is to practice for a certification test....

Works like a charm. Apple Supports says you can have multiple instances of Bootcamp. Win Server 2008 R2 is up and running, drivers installed (except issues with Bluetooth) and accepting Windows Updates and Service Packs.

Lion Server 10.7.4 VPN service not using my Active Directory domain for authentication

I have Lion Server 10.7.4 setup on a Mac Mini and I have enabled the VPN service for both L2TP and PPTP. The Mac Mini is joined to my Windows Domain at a functional level of Server 2008 R2. I have set the authentication paths to point to my domain in Directory Utility.
What I would like to have happen is for my laptop to be able to VPN into my office network remotely using domain credentials and not local account credentials on the Mac Mini itself. This is a process I have done numerous times on Windows boxes, but for some reason the only way I can get the VPN to work on this instance of Lion Server 10.7.4 is by authenticating using local accounts only.
Does Lion Server 10.7.4 only authenticate VPN users based on it's local account schema? Or can it truly authenticate against an active directory domain?

Yes, I had already done that a few days ago. I was able to add the desired AD group to the allowed users/groups for the VPN service. Thats exactly what is so weird about this...it allows me to search for and add an AD user or group to the list of allowed users/groups, but then when I actually try to use a domain account to authenticate to the VPN is just gives me the "cannot authenticate" error. Very strange.
I wondered if for some reason Apple is only allowing local accounts to be authenticated against. Sounds crazy, but I cannot for the life of me get this to work. I also wondered if Kerberizing the server would help, but when I go to join a Kerberos realm in Open Directory inside of Server Admin, it just has no realm listed in the drop down menu.
Other than that, all other aspects of the Mac Mini being joined to the AD domain seems to be good. I'm really stumped here...

QuickTime Broadcaster is not compatible with Lion server and Darwin server webpage appears fixed to 2008...4 years ago!
So what is the solution now that I have Lion server?
I want to stream a live video feed from my education lab so that students overseas can view. No audio is OK.
QuickTime Broadcaster used to do the job fine...since 1998! Maybe I should reinstall 10.6 server?

You will need a dev account to get the tools and when this first came out it was the equivalent of rocket science. I see that Apple has done some work to improve but we've never given it a second chance.
