Have Logic/Peak 5 - Do I need Soundtrack Pro?

I recently did an erase & install of my system and have been slowly putting everything back together. A few years ago, before buying Logic Express (and ultimately Logic Pro), I had purchased Soundtrack because it seemed useful. Shortly after that, I took advantage of a great deal to update my copy of Peak LE to Peak 4 (and subsequently Peak 5). When Apple offered the upgrade path from Soundtrack to Soundtrack Pro, I took advantage of that (is it any wonder I'm in debt?!).
Well, I realized that between using Logic Pro and Peak, I never used Soundtrack Pro even though I had installed it. As I'm re-installing my computer software, I'm wondering if I should even bother installing Soundtrack Pro. Can anyone see any benefit? I'm doing some composing to picture, but so far Logic's been able to handle that fine. 'Mastering' and converting vinyl work smoothly in Peak. Should I bother with Soundtrack Pro?
If not, I'm thinking I should just sell it on ebay or something, but I'm not real sure of how that works for software. According to the Apple Software License Agreement, "You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software to another party..." Does that mean I need to contact Apple when the sale happens (or before, or after)? Anyone have experience with this sort of thing?
Thanks a lot for any thoughts....

Thanks everyone! Mike, after marking the other responses as 'Helpful' I was going to do the same for yours, but the option wasn't there (only 'Solved' which I'm not quite at yet....). I can totally see the usefulness of Soundtrack, I just want to run a lean machine free from any stuff I won't truly be needing considering what I've already got.
Okay, so I think I'll take my chances with selling it on ebay. I'll actually include both the original Soundtrack box and the Soundtrack Pro box, just to make sure everything's all clear.
Now, what kinds of steps do I need to take to officially transfer my Soundtrack license(s) to a potential buyer? I don't want there to be any confusion for someone that might purchase it, or any screwiness going on with my Apple registration account.
Thanks!

What "basic package" are you referring to? FCP is only available as part of Final Cut Studio, which includes ALL of the apps you mention ... unless, of course, you purchase a used copy of FCP alone.

  • Need Soundtrack Pro or equivalent as standalone app. (not bundled with FCS)

I do in-house editing of seminar videos for a small organization. The bottleneck is cleaning up the audio tracks of oral clicks and other vocal noises we don't want in the video. It would greatly speed up the process if we could have 2 people working simultaneously on the audio tracks.
I'd be happy to purchase another copy of Soundtrack Pro to do this. But I can't justify $1299 to get it as part of the Final Cut Studio bundle because I don't need a 2nd copy of all the other applications. I have not found any other audio editing application that has the features I use all the time in Soundtrack Pro: Set Ambient Noise Print/Replace with Ambient Noise.
Does anyone know of another application that does this? I also need the app. to include an equivalent to the pencil tool to clean up clicks. (hopefully for less than $300).

What keeps you from crossgrading if you've got other FCS apps?
Here's another option. Get Apple Motion used. Then crossgrade to FCS for 200[total it's a freakin deal]! Where there's a will there's always a way...Hey.

  • I have Logic Express 7. Can I import Pro Tools sessions into that?

I'm trying to export my PT sessions into Logic Express 7. Can I do this?

The easiest, guarantedd-to-work way, is to export all your track from PT sessions as AUDIO.
Have them ALL consolidated at the same exact start point, and then import them inot Logic. Line them up to th same start point, and PRESTO! You're there.
Logic LE does NOT support any of the OMF and other formats of mutli-track import-export stuff, only Logic PRO.
    Cheers
PS I always do it the way I described for you, with no issues, no "my OMF file is corrupted"

  • Logic or Soundtrack Pro?

    Happy new year all.
I was involved in making a film a while back and we were never too happy about about the overall sound mix of the soundtrack. I am in possession of 4 stereo audio stems: main dialogue, secondary dialogue, FX and music. The main fault is that the music has been mixed too quietly. I am hoping that these stems will provide what I need to fix things. There is a fair amount of fader riding/automation on the music so it might not be the easiest of jobs but I believe its do-able.
I was originally going to do the job with Logic but I'm wondering if Soundtrack Pro would be better, considering it is supposed to be designed for this sort of work. I am nowhere near as familiar with it as I am Logic but I'm happy to use the job as a learning excercise - but I don't want to get so far and discover limitations etc.
Can anyone provide me with a good argument that soundtrack pro is the better tool for the job.

I too am struggling in planning finishing a production that I am working on. I originally posted in a thread which may broaden this discussion a bit.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6016983#6016983
I am the producer/editor and composer, I hire out camera work and direct the shoots and do preproduction planning. I also conduct interviews, work with my client who is the writer and lead investigator in an underwater archaeology project. We do field work including underwater video, surface operations video and interviews based on the objectives of the script outline.
The final project is a 25 minute NOVA (on a bare bones budget) style documentary that will be used for reports to government agencies, Congress members, and also be a demo to raise funds for a higher budget production. It will also be shown in a museum theatre setting and possibly be broadcast on a local PBS affiliate. The better the production is the more funding I attract to make it even better.
(One year later when my funding came through) I did a rough edit and we writes the rough narration. Client with laptop and microphone in my studio. In this way we build the production prior to filming the professional host (in maybe two weeks). At this point I am at rough cut two and have started animation (there is a history piece that sets the stage for the field work video) and all the other editing tasks that can be attacked before the narration is recorded and picture locked.
Once picture is locked and narration recorded I will export a rough mix to Logic to build the music tracks with live musicians (no loops need apply as they take away from the satisfaction for me).
So, like you Thomas, I need to decide whether to get proficient in a new application or since I am in Logic anyhow and control the visual edits myself in FCP, should I just stay in LP8 where I am comfortable and possibly use Soundtrack as a helper application for specialized tasks? I am curious about exporting XML files and bringing all of my audio stems into Logic.
I am leaning toward Logic since I am at home in it. My last production was a series of 18 discrete interviews that I then scored in Logic 7 and just sent a stereo track to FCP and did the mix with keyframes. While I am mostly happy with the music, I was not happy with the inconsistent final results and hope to get funding to take the project to a mastering studio.
That's my story. I am curious about what conclusions you reach. I do get how great the conforming feature is in certain work flows but not sure it means much for my current project.
Any more input on the subject?
    Eric

  • Since Lion compressor and soundtrack pro have gone

    Hi
Since I have installed Macos 1.7 (Lion) several programms have been removed from my HD: Compressor 3.5, Sountrack Pro and my favourite Quicktime 7. Do any of you have the same experience and do you know how to 'get these pgrms back?

    Hi Jonaz
I haven't heard stories so far of Lion completely removing apps. I heard that Lion analyzes which apps are not compatible with Lion any longer (e.g. because they are PowerPC apps and need Rosetta to run). If Lion finds any of those apps, it moves them into a folder called "Incompatible Software" (see here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3258)
If they are incompatible, they should be there. I don't know about SoundTrack Pro and don't have a Lion machine currently with both SoundTrack Pro or Compressor and Lion. But from what I heard on the internets, Compressor 3.5 should still work. I would try to re-install it from your installation DVDs. I can't think of any reason why they should not run under Lion.

  • Unable to send to Soundtrack Pro

I am attempting to export an audio clip to Soundtrack Pro using FCP 6.0.3. I control click the clip in the Browser and scroll down to, "Send to", but the option which I need (Soundtrack Pro Multitrack project) is grayed out and I am unable to send the clip. I am sure that I am missing a setting somewhere but I am unable to figure out which one. Thanks.

I have tried taking it from the timeline with the same result. This was a Volume installation so the original install disc is somewhere else.

  • Where is Soundtrack Pro?

    I'm on Logic Pro 9.1.8
    Mountain Lion 10.8.5
I'm doing a tutorial walkthrough (D. Nahmani, 'Pro Audio Production' p.322).
The instruction in step 5 (Choose Options > Audio > Open in Soudtrack Pro) has revealed that I don't have Soundtrack Pro, and I'm not sure why?
I bought from the App Store more than a year ago.
    Can anyone help, please?
I've had a cursory look for the application in the applications folder but I'm not locating it if it is on my disk.

    Hi
    Master Knob wrote:
I figured as much but I'm perplexed; why then is this discontinued app 'appendage' referred to with prominence in D. Nahmani's walkthrough for the official workbook for Logic Pro 9.
The book was written for the original (boxed) Logic Studio version, prior to the AppStore only LP9 release.
    Master Knob wrote:
Regarding opening audio files in a separate audio-editing app - do you have anything you'd recommend that equal Soundtrack Pro? Secondly, is editing outside of Logic so advantageous, anyhow?
There are plenty of 3rd party audio file editors, for example Adobe Audition, Sound Forge and others. Some audio file editors (including STP) will allow you do do things that are not possible in Logic ( e.g. frequency spectrum view) or much more fiddly to do in Logic.

  • Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 crashes continuously in Lion

I purchased a new iMac 27 with the 3.4 GHz i7 processor a few months ago and finally have a project where I'm using Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 which was transfered over from my old iMac.
On the old iMac, STP2 would crash from time to time but it was relatively stable.  On the new machine it seems that I can't do more than a couple edits without the machine crashing up.  The Youhng W1 plug in and simply saving the file seem to be the worst offenders.
Any advice on what might be going on here?  Not using the Youhng W1 plugin to avoid crashes is possible but not saving is not!

All the pro apps should be installed from the Original disks. Migrating is NEVER advised.
Use Digital Rebellion's FCS remover to delete the app and start the install fresh.
That being said, STP v2 is very old and Apple has done nothing to make Mountain Lion backwardly compatible with ancient software.
What this means is - even with a clean install, it may be unstable.
    Good luck.

  • Soundtrack Pro "unexpected problem" no Start anymore

    An Unexpected Problem
    NSRangeException
Cannot remove an observer <BinModule 0x121f2ab0> for the key path "arrangedObjects" from <NSTreeController 0x12527810> because it is not registered as an observer.

You see error message above? That's all, what I see, when I want to start Soundtrack Pro 3 since today... You won't get any workspace, but just the error message. Even re-installation does not solve the problem. On the Mac Pro, there is also an installation of Final Cut Pro X, which was updated this week to version 10.04. Might this be the source for all problems...? Anybody any idea? Hopefully, because we really need Soundtrack Pro for an project. Thanks!!

Vielen Dank!!

  • Soundtrack Pro making a LOT of files - used to working in Logic, need help

So I'm used to working with Logic Studio/7.2/etc, and it's my first foray into working with Soundtrack Pro at work. My questions are this: When I use the razorblade tool (since I can't find an equivalent to the split tool in logic) in soundtrack to cut up a sequence, it seems to be creating a LOT of extra files:
http://www.1217design.com/pics/stp_question.png is an example of what I mean. Is this supposed to happen? The recorded files themselves were done in FCP and sent to Soundtrack Pro via the Send to STP Multitrack session function.
What I'm trying to find out is: Is this supposed to be happening? How can I stop this from happening? Are all of these extra files necessary in order to export the final project? And what will happen if I delete them?
I just want to know because the folder is now 4.71gb for a 30 second audio file (the final aif export is roughly 30mb), and there's over 200 of these extra files that have been created in the process of working on this project.
If this is what is necessary to work in Final Cut then I won't be able to work with FCP due to size issues (which is a shame as I feel so much more comfortable working within that environment than I do working in FCP).
Thanks for the help in advance,
    Sean

    Sean A wrote:
By doing this, will it still create all of those extra files? That's what I'm trying to figure out. Is it just from the blade tool being used?
For all edits, yeah, baby, STP will generate more files than cows create methane.
First, I know what works for me, but I'm still learning, so I strongly encourage you to keep a COMPLETE BACKUP of all projects until you know your workflow. Also, you may have Preferences set up differently than I do, so you may not find the same paths as what I describe here.
When you have an audio file the way you want it, and you're confident that you won't need those edit files again (be SURE) Process > Flatten All Actions (or Audible Actions) and Save that audio file. Then -- as I understand it so far -- you can safely trash all the edits related to that file. (If you use Photoshop or similar visual programs, it's the same idea.)
During my first few weeks of intensive STP work, my drive grew more and more sluggish, for no reasons known to me. I saw disk space shrinking rapidly. Finally I figured it had to have something to do with STP, so I started searching and eventually I found my edits piling up in home/Documents/Soundtrack Pro Documents, especially (for me) in Edited Media. Since they all came from projects I'd finished and exported to AAC and MP3, I was comfortable trashing them all. Suddenly, whoa, I had an extra 12 GB of disk space available.
Just keep those edit files until you are CERTAIN that you know what you're doing and that you're DONE. Otherwise, when some project needs one precious little 3MB turn of a phrase, you may find yourself confronting suicidal or homicidal tendencies.
I welcome further clarification and/or correction from people who know more and can explain it better.
    Best,
    chuck
