Some menu entries in the main menu bar are hidden if you use the mouse and only appear if you use the keyboard to open the menu (Bug 626825).
You can see the difference if you use Alt+F to open the File menu or Alt+E to open the Edit menu and compare that to what you see if you use the mouse to open the menu after you have made the menu bar visible by tapping Alt or by pressing F10.
You can close a tab with a middle click on that tab or with the close X on that tab.

  • There is no longer a "close tab" under the file menu, so how do I go back to a previous page when the back button will not work?

Often the back button will not work. I can find no "close tab" under the menus, which I think used to be there, and which is used with Internet Explorer to go to the previous page. How can I go back to the previous page with Firefox when the back button will not work?

No you can't. Apple don't support downgrading of iOS.

  • With multiple tabs open, I use to click File, close tab---now close tab is missing and I exit out of Firefox completely. How do I get that choice back "close tab" in the "File" drop down? Thanks. George C.

The drop down "FILE" in the tool bar use to have a choice to "CLOSE TAB". This is now missing so when I have multiple tabs open and I want to close the most recent, I cannot. I then get warned that I will be closing multiple numbers of tabs, but there is no other choice.

  • I have lost my tabs for the umpteenth time. Session restore only works if your kids hit the restore button. Otherwise, a new session gets started. FRUSTRATED!!!

Even though I have my settings set to the "correct" settings to hopefully prevent the lost tabs problem, you still have to be careful in order to prevent the loss of tabs. I have lost all my research again and again... If for whatever reason FF gets closed the wrong way, and then the "restore session" button doesn't get clicked when you re-open, and then you happen to open any further tabs, suddenly you can never get back to all your previous tabs.
I have scoured the internet for solutions to this problem, looked for ways to get them back, and ways to prevent this from occurring. I Have set my browser to the recommended settings. I have tried to restore my sessions. I don't understand WHY cannot the tab feature be made easy to save????
I get all these tabs set up... and then, WHAM! suddenly they evaporate, never to be seen again.
love the Tab system. It's visual. It's relatively easy to navigate. I don't forget they are there, and they are effortless to create...unlike bookmarks.
Why in the world can't I give a tab group a name and then have it be permanently available, like a group of bookmarks that I can create and access at will?
Why must it be that I have to search the internet for ways to restore them, and then the recommendations are geared only to computer literate people able to extract them from the bowels of their computer memory in some obscure and confusing procedure?!?
I have looked at and installed numerous add-ons in the hopes of solving this problem and have not found a satisfactory solution. It seems like there are tons of other people out there who wish for this exact same thing, What is the hang-up with this???

Firefox has the ability to bookmark all open tabs, in each window separately. It's not a "session manager", but if it's the same set of tabs you want opened at the same time all the time, you might consider using that feature.<br />
Right-click a tab and select '''Bookmark All Tabs...''' and then give the folder a name. When you want to open all those tabs simply middle-click that folder or right-click that folder and select '''Open All in Tabs'''.
As far as the "problem" you described...... <br />
    # You really should have a separate logon user account for your kids or for each of the other users of that PC, so they wouldn't be using your Firefox installation. That is a basic feature in Windows that goes back to the days of Windows 2000.
    # Firefox saves the previous session, but if that session isn't restored during the "current session" it is gone. That's the way it is designed to work. A temporary session save feature.
    # To save a session or multiple session try using a "session manager" extension to "extend" what comes with Firefox. Here's two extensions with a session manager feature for your consideration. <br />

  • Firefox suddenly reconfigured itsself. The File tool bar is now gone, the browser wants to go to Bing, and several apps have appeard that I dodn't ask for. What happened? How do I fix it?

This morning Firefox was working fine. Then it suddenly reconfigured itself. The File, Edit, History bar went away, as did the bar that tells me what web site I am on, and the next bar that allows me to manually enter a URL and to search via google or Yahoo, ect.
At startup the browser sends me to Bing, and it keeps trying to activate applications I have not asked for.
What happened and how do I fix it?

    * In Firefox 3.6 versions on Windows and Firefox 4 on Windows and Linux it's possible to hide the "Menu Bar" via "View > Toolbars" or via the right-click context menu of a toolbar.
    * Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
    * Go to "View > Toolbars" or right-click the "Menu Bar" or press Alt+V T to select which toolbars to show or hide (click on an entry to toggle the state).

  • I accidentally managed to delete the "New Tab" from the Navigation tool bar and I can't get it back. Can you help?

I wanted to rearrange to Navigation toolbar and accidentally deleted the "Add new tab" from it. I now have the "Stop loading this page", "Reload current page" and "Home" buttons, but the new tab button is gone! I checked the "Customize" panel, but it's vanished from there too. All that's there is a "Open in a new window" tool. I'm aware that i can open a new tab just by clicking the plus next to the open tabs or Ctrl+T, but I'm used to doing it with the actual button, so I'd be grateful if you could help me.
    Thanks :)

You can find the New Tab button showing as a '+' on the Tab bar.<br />
You can open the Customize window and drag the New Tab button that shows as a plus sign (+) from the Tab bar on another toolbar and it will become a regular toolbar button like the New Tab button that you have in Firefox 3 versions.<br />
If you can't find the New Tab button then click the "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window.<br />
If you want the New Tab button at the far right end of the Tab bar then place a flexible space to the left of it.<br />

A few weeks ago you sent a tip by e-mail (which I have lost) explaining how to place the "Print" icon permanently on the top tool bar (top right; underneath the "Home" icon).
Could you kindly re-send the tip?
    Thank you

    Do the following:
    # Right click at the top of the Firefox browser
    # Select <i>Customize...</i> from the drop-down menu
    # Drag the <i>Print</i> button to the top toolbar/tab bar
    # Click <i>Ok</i>

  • I used to have a close tab for exiting the current site I was on instead of closing all of firefox. How do I get it back?

I used to have a close tab for exiting the current site I was on instead of closing all of firefox. It was a red box with an x in it. How do I get it back?

Click in a blank space on a toolbar & open 'customize'. You'll find that there is a gray "x" (on my browser it's gray) that is for closing a tab. Drag it up to wherever you want on the toolbar & it should work fine.

Hi jcatx2013, we don't really have enough information on your system to make specific suggestions...
Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Any difference?

  • How do I get a Vista 64 bit XP machine to show a "+" icon on the tab bar to "Open a new tab" and the "Open a new tab" icon on the far right of the Bookmarks tool bar?

I have Firefox 4.0.1 installed on two laptops, one with Windows Vista, 64 bit and the other with Windows XP. Both machines have the "Open a new tab" icon on the far right of the Bookmarks tool bar. The XP machine also has a + icon on the tab bar to "Open a new tab" while the Vista machine does not have that + icon. I like using that; is there any way to get it on the Vista machine?

After weeks of trying, I stumbled on the solution:
    # Right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip, select Customize... and the Customize Toolbar window will open.
    # At the bottom of the Customize Toolbar window, there are additional options for changing the appearance of the icons in your toolbars. From the Show drop-down menu, you can choose what to display in the toolbars — Icons, Text, or Icons and Text together. By default, Firefox just shows Icons.
    # Select Icons and Text
    # When you are finished making changes, click Done to close the Customize Toolbar window.

  • I have difficulty pasting text into the file name field(prefix only) while saving files.

    OS: WinXP sp3
    FF: 3.6.3
I have difficulty pasting text into the file name field (prefix only) while saving files. example: File name is Pic123.jpg and I want to rename it ABC123.jpg and I have ABC loaded into the WinXPsp3 clipboard. When I highlight\right-click\delete "Pic" then attempt to paste the ABC, I get either no reaction, or upon multiple paste attempts, the ABC is appended to the end of the file, after the extension, as "Pic123.jpgABC". If I delete this unwanted suffix, or repeat the process several times, eventually I can delete the unwanted portion of the prefix and paste the desired text. Sometimes it works fine first try, but mostly it takes several tries. I'm using Firefox 3.6.3 but the problem existed in whatever previous version I had too. This issue only occurs when using the delete/paste; I can always manually change the name by typing. Thank you for your help.

    * Make sure that you not run Firefox in [[Private Browsing]] mode
    * In Private Browsing mode some menu items are disabled (grayed) and features like visited links are disabled and not showing
    * You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing", possibly grayed
    * You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
    * To see all History settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
    * Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"
It usually works better if you export the Favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
    * Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
    * Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File
