have used firefox for awhile but can't get in, tried upgrade. have mac os 10.411 which isn't that old. I'm trying to write a contract with California Assoc, of Realtors and it won't let me in on Safari or explorer. I have been happy with firefox til now.

If your machine meets Snow Leopard's specs, you can go straight to it. No need to mess with Leopard. As for backing up, I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner, whereas others use SuperDuper!. These are the two most popular ones. Use whichever to make a bootable backup/clone onto an external FireWire HD, boot with it to ensure that it looks and acts like the original. Then, install Snow Leopard onto either one of them. BTW, using DVDs to store your picture stuff is an exercise in futility. Just get another ext FWHD and store them there. A standard installation of SL will only replace the system files, leaving all your data and preferences intact.
But! Things have been known to go wrong, so I strongly advise backing up your current system to an external HD with the Restore function in Disk Utility before starting the installation.

This is not a QuickTime issue so this was not the best forum in which to take up this question, but if you have only Mac OS X 10.4.x on your computer, you cannot install any version of iTunes later than 9.2.1, which you can download here:

Note that you will need to have updated your iMac to Mac OS X 10.4.11.
If you need a newer version of iTunes, you will need to upgrade your system to at least Mac OS X 10.5.8 which would allow you to install iTunes 10.6.3. If you have a new iPhone 5 or iPad that requires iTunes 10.7, you will need Mac OS X 10.6. Neither Mac OS X 10.5 nor 10.6 are a free upgrade.

i run a commercial recording studio since 2009 and purchased a mac pro quad core with os x 10.5.8 and record with protools, it has now got to the point where i can no longer purchase plugins for protools because the operating system is to old i need at least snow leopard ,i have never upgraded and am concerned about losing any previous protools sessions and plugins ,it has been suggested to me to upgrade just one of the hardrives to snow leopard or lion or the latest system and then just open a protools session on the old osx hardrive and save to the new upgraded hardrive , is this possible? or has anyone any suggestions ,many thanks

You should seriously consider establishing a Boot drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files (including Paging/Swap) on it. User files are moved off to another drive.
This makes maintaining the System and maintaining your User files much easier, and it makes your Mac faster in every way.

Okay, now we are getting somewhere. With a Core2Duo you can upgrade to at least Snow Leopard, and you will need Snow Leopard at least if you want to upgrade further.
1) Make sure your computer meets Snow Leopard technical specifications - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575 This mostly means making sure it is an Intel Mac (yours is) and has at least 1GB RAM (more is recommended). To check RAM, go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac". Now continue to "More Info...". It should say you have at least 1GB of "memory".
2) Apple no longer carries 10.6 in its stores or online. Telephone Apple to purchase a Snow Leopard disc. In the USA: (800) 676-2775 (contact information for other countries: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57)
Alternatively you can buy from online retailers but anticipate paying much more than the original price which is the price still charged by Apple
3) Backing up your computer before upgrading is always a good idea.
4) After installing from the DVD, update your Snow Leopard installation using Software Update or manually downloading and installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v.1.1 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399

Have iWork 09 DVD. Cannot upgrade for free to new versions

App Store does not acknowledge that I have the DVD version of iWork. It doesn't even have any serial numbers printed on the DVD or in the sleeve. Is there a way to "tell" the app store app that I have this Apple software? I thought that iWork '09 customers get iWork '13 for free? Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
