Have Mac OS 7, 8, 9, and 10.4 talk to each other, is it possible?

If so can I have some hints (mainly with 10.4)?
Models that I have networked:
Power Macintosh 7500/100 (Mac OS 8.0)
Power Macintosh 8600/300 (Mac OS 8.0)
Power Macintosh G4 (Mac OS 9.2.2 and 10.4.11)
Powerbook 520 (Mac OS 7.?.5)
If needed I can upgrade the Power Macintoshes to Mac OS 9 (Gotta Find the CD).
Thanks,
George W.

You have always been able to Bridge from AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk (e.g., PhoneNet wiring) using one of the solutions below. They were introduced as Printer Bridges, but they can Bridge up to 8 devices including File Sharing Macs (but cannot get those Macs on the Internet):
1) Farallon EtherMac iPrint LT
2) Asante AsanteTalk
3) Apple Bridge software, running in the background on a Mac with both Ethernet and LocalTalk ports
All this stuff inter-operates pretty much as Gil has said until you get to 10.4. At 10.4, Apple eliminated support for File Sharing using Appletalk \[AppleTalk/LocalTalk was already dead in Mac OS X, but they eliminated AppleTalk-over-Ethernet as well.]
OS 9 supports File Sharing using both AppleTalk-over-Ethernet and TCP/IP \[TCP/IP is also over Ethernet, but cannot be converted to AppleTalk/LocalTalk]. OS 9 does this trick by including a bit of software called ShareWay IP. This package appear to have been written by, and is now available from a third party, Open Door Systems, at a modest price (US$39), and can be retrofit into OS 8 and some OS 7 systems:

PS: This illustrated article explains connecting OS 9 and Mac OS X:

In general, you will have better luck attempting to connect from the Older Mac to the Newer Mac.

    Hi Everyone,
Okay, when using Safari and trying to email the web content by pressing command + i a message pops up saying the following "Safari couldn't create and email message because it couldn't locate an email application." then it states "You can use the Mail application included with Mac OS X to send webpages. To do so, you need to install Mail using the Mac OS X installation CD's."
Well I have mail it came with Leopard "Hello" I use it every day. Has anybody encountered this problem any help would be highly appreciated. I have cleared the preferences out of the library folder for Safari and Mail and nothing.

  • Can Time Capsule and BT Homehub talk to each other wirelessly??

    Dear All!
I have a 500GB Dual Band Time Capsule however I have a problem....
I live in a house where the BT hub is located downstairs (main telephone socket). Because I share the house with friends, for safety, my printer and TC are upstairs in my bedroom. I am therefore trying to get my TC to extend the BT Hub in order for me to be able to browse the net as well as access TC and let Time Machine do its thing.
I've tried to do it but have failed miserably! Can anyone out there help me pleeeasssseeee?
    Thanks!

Guys, and in particular Duane, thank you for all the posts back to my question!
I am using the standard white BT home hub (not the latest version), which as you've confirmed can not be extended. My main problem is that for safety reasons I don't want to put my TC next to the hub, however, could I solve my problem by buying an AX, plugging this in next to the router, connect it to the home hub via ethernet and then extend that wireless network to my TC in my room?? (It would actually be cool to connect to my speakers wirelessly - surely the TC should have come with an audio socket like the AX!?!?)
Anyway this option seems excessive (and not exactly cheap) but maybe the only way forward...?? Unless I get as lucky as finding a needle in a haystack and find a router than TC can extend!
Really appreciate the help from all - thanks!

I have MAC OSX 10.5.8 and need to install adobe illustrator. I checked the compatibility and found that CS5 will work. Can any one help where i can find it. The trail version is fine with me as i just have to use it for couple of days till i get my mac book back from service. Can any one help me on this.

    You are welcome, ameronweb.
To elaborate a bit, you may come across offers of a new/unopened/unregistered version, which is the simplest case (you would need a guarantee). Other cases require much detailed information (and a guarantee).
If upgrading to 10.6.8 or higher is an option, you could use CS6.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 6.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

Installation went well but when I boot either with OSx or Win it always keeps Windows keyboard.
How can I have Mac keyboard in OS boot and Win keyboard in Win boot?

Hi - I have the exact same model as your MacBook and had a few questions as mine is acting up. I upgraded the ram to 8gb (2x 4GB ram) and ever since then my computer has not been running as smoothly and the start up time is horrendous. Have you encountered this problem? And if so how did you fix? What would you advise me do?
I was thinking of reverting back to the original factory 4GB then rebooting the entire computer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

I have Mac OS 10.8.5 and Acrobat X 10.1.9. how do I set up as PDF printer?

during installation of acrobat a virtual pdf printer is installed.
when printing you should see an option to print to a pdf file.  if you don't, reinstall.
you might need to uninstall, clean your system and then reinstall, http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html

I have performed all troubleshoot suggestions to make my iphone and PC calendar update to each other via icloud. What else can I do to resolve this? This has been the most frustrationg aspect of changing to iphone and ipad. Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
        1.    First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
        2.    Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
        3.    If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

  • Mac and iPhone don't see each other

This isn't just with Home Sharing, but with other apps that use wifi to connect, specifically iAccounts and iBackup, but I couldn't find a more appropriate community.
My iPhone and MacBook Pro are connected to the same wifi network, one has 192.168.1.64, the other is 192.168.1.65, both can connect to the internet with no problems, both have full signal strength.  So why can't they see each other?  Sometimes it works, when everything is turned off then back on again, but sometimes that doesn't work.  Last time it worked only after I reset my router, which suggests maybe the router is the problem.  It's a BT HomeHub 3, which probably doesn't mean much to most of you, so give me general advice.  What settings should I look at?  Could it have something to do with my Mac connecting via 802.11 N and my iPhone 802.11 G?  It's a 3GS, so it can't do N.
Both Mac and iPhone have the latest OS (10.6.8 and 4.3.3).

I stumbled upon the answer by searching other (non-apple support) sites for this problem.  Apparently (and non-intuitively), "personal hotspot" (aka internet tethering) must first be enabled before attempting to establish a BT link.  The reason I say non-intuitive is:
Firstly, bluetooth is supposed to be a stand-alone wireless networking protocol that doesn't require another wireless network to be available for it to work.  What other sort of device (computer or otherwise) requires an existing network to be in place before BT will work?
Secondly, if tethering via personal hotspot is a prerequisite for a BT link, why is there no pop-up message advising of this when BT is turned on?  Something like "Hey idiot, you need to turn on personal hotspot before you can establish a bluetooth link!"  Or better yet, why not automatically turn on the hotspot when the BT button is switched on?
Thirdly, it really makes the BT shortcut button (in the home screen control center) worthless if you've still got to manually drill down into the settings menu to turn on hotspot anyway.
I scrubbed all apple user support articles related to using BT and pairing the iPhone with iPad that I could find to make sure I hadn't missed this new requirement somewhere - and I don't see it mentioned anywhere (although I'll admit that steam was coming out of my ears while I read it, so I may not have been in the best frame of mind to catch any new information).  In the BT troubleshooting article, it mentions every check-this and check-that step but nowhere does it say make sure that personal hotspot is also turned on! I submitted feedback at the bottom of the article; hopefully they'll update it.
Thanks, Lyssa for bearing with me through all of this, which in the end turned out to be a user error.  Although I consign myself to some comfort in knowing that this is not how it worked prior to iOS8.  And as soon as I can find a phone on iOS7 or older, I'll confirm that.

  • I have two apple id's because my hotmail account is no longer active. How can I delete the old one and use or update the new one?  Every time I try it won't allow me and now my iPad thinks there are two accounts and they are arguing with each other. Help!

You can't merge accounts or copy content to a different account, so anything that you bought or downloaded via the old account is tied to that account - so any updates that those apps get you will only be able to download via that account. You can change which account is logged in on the iPad via Settings > Store
