Have...macbook pro, 10.5.1, need min Win OS, which one should i purchase?

which windows OS should i install on my memory maxed MacBook PRO laptop? Want the min memory, min $$ spent but need to make sure i can access web sites with internet explorer. Don't need to run games, run applications except for IE.
I'm a realtor and the sites i need to get info from require internet explorer. Firefox and safari are not compatible. I already called these sites and they said the data they return to the website was written for IE and not safari or firefox. These are must go to sites and i figure the best way to access them is to run boot camp, download a window OS. BUT....
I only want the minimum windows OS to save $$$ and memory. I'm already using 70G of 80G. I plan to buy an external and move photo's and movies over before i install windows. Also, I know i need to vista or xp with service pac 2.
But, which Windows OS is best for minimal conflicts but also buying the OS that takes the smallest amount of memory.? Only want to access web sites and see spreadsheet data only available on IE. Not using windows for any other applications or uses.
Thanks in advance
Any

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
with waht you want to do in Windows and with your MacBook Pro a 32-bit OEM version of either Windows XP Home with Service-Pack 2 or Vista Home Premium would be sufficient.
Although these versions might not let you use the full amount of RAM installed in your MBP, but rather something between 2GB and 3.5GB, that shouldn't be of much concern to you, since the IE (and other Office programs) are not that much RAM-hungry.

Stefan

    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You could contact Apple Support and see if they have the original discs for that machine but it would be 10.4.11 and there's no reason not to go to at least Snow Leopard, especially since the 10.6 discs would probably cost the same as a replacement set of 10.4.11

Run MDP to HDMI for picture. Use a cable like this to run sound from your audio out on your Mac to your TV's audio in.  That's about all  you can do.

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

You cannot download it. Here are some options:
You can contact Apple and purchase replacement discs.
You can purchase a Leopard installer DVD on eBay or Amazon.com.
You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD instead and upgrade the OS.
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps listed in this support article, take these steps:
    1. Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
    2. Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
    3. If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
    4. If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
    5. If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
    6. If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
    7. If the machine has an internal hard drive, erase the one remaining data partition with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer to the buyer.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either. The buyer will have to purchase them.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

This is it. Programming was done by idiots. People at schools IT department 20 or so full time positions know less then kids at Best Buy GeekSquad minimum wage part time, don't know or even want to call to find out. They just sit there and ask if the antivirus is upto date, I cant install your software that check the antivirus, "ITS NOT THE ANTIVIRUS". Three weeks and as always I have to find the fix myself. My god, why do I work for my money when I can just sit and collect it. Sorry for the rant.
This fix works and needs to be loaded on the campus network.

FC/e is based upon the Quicktime-engine; so, on 'Export using QT', you'll get all codecs & settings.
    but which one..
due to sheer popularity, YouTube became a 'standard' - I'm happy with the convenience, YT and the 'embed'-code offers - excellent quality, automatic adjusted to the watchers connection&hardware.
    my export settings are 720p, h264, 6MBit/sec - gives a - imho! - superb quality.
(example of a 'screen-test' from my latest project CLICK )
for creating so-called 'flash video'/.flv, you need 3rd party apps.
Sorenson Squeeze is more of an pro-tool, .. you need some background knowledge to get noticeable 'better' quality.
.. and the question is: are you willing to pay $.$$$ for that 0.x% more quality .. ? does your source offers such a 101% quality, which needs such affords?
if bandwidth is an issue, because you're hosting on your own servers, consider the free codec xh264, you can install as a free QT-plug-in.. with low or super-low bitrates, it offers a superior quality compared to h264 ...

  • I have MacBook Pro and whenever I start Aperature 3 it stays on for about 5 minutes then it shuts down with an error of shutting down unexpected... anything??

Hello, I have MacBook Pro and whenever I start Aperature 3 it stays on for about 5 minutes then it shuts down with an error of shutting down unexpected... anything??
Also does anyone know how to take something from one picture and add it to another in aperature?
    Thank you!!!

I had the exact same problem. Here is what an Apple Support person told me to do - and it worked like a charm!
Go to your APPLICATIONS Folder. Find a folder within that folder called TOOLBARS. Remove the ENTIRE folder. Once you remove that folder, your Aperture should work perfectly.
There is something in that folder that you don't need that messes with Aperture. Try it. Mine worked perfectly!

  • Is it safe to keep downloaded movies in the Macbook Pro or do I need to use an external hard disk for those ? Please suggest.

Is it safe to store the downloaded movies from iTunes in my Macbook Pro or do I need to store those separately in an external hard disk ? Please advice.

It will be no better or worse than any other video file and should not be responsible for any system instability.  As I alluded to earlier, video takes up a lot of space and you can quickly use up that 200 GB of space.  Download a few files to you MBP and see what impact it has.  I have a couple of external HDDs dedicated to video files (and backups of same) due to the large file sizes.
If you find that space is getting tight on your MBP, then get an external for the video files and another one to back them up.  I have a couple of external HDDs dedicated to video files (and backups of same) due to the large file sizes.
    Ciao.
