Have new G5.  How do I xfer iPhoto from old G4?

I've tried several ways to transfer my iPhoto's from my old G4 to my new G5. Both use iPhoto 5.0.4.
I tried importing them but lost some filenames, date info, and they where not in the correct order. I then created a new library and tried to copy my entire iphoto library, then I changed the ownership & permissions of the iphoto library on the new G5. The order was still not correct. In addition, any albums I created and then tried to put on my iPod failed. The computer stated "updating iPod", but when I disconnected there were no photos' on the iPod.
My last try I exported a couple of photo's using Export/Title. These were then imported to the new G5 (Add Library). These infact did keep all the required info and they where able to successfully transfer to my iPod.
My question is - does anyone know of a faster and more comprehensive solution?
negative of my last solution:
- everytime you export a photo and import it you loose a little resolution. Not much for a one time shot, but it could add up over time.
Thanks,
RC

I have tried all the options mentioned above – no luck. However, here was my solution. It seems to be working at least for the last couple of hours.
This solved my iPhoto Library problem and my iPod problem.
I used TextEdit to correct the file path of my iPhoto AlbumData XML file. This whole problem began when I transferred my iPhoto Library from one Mac to another. The AlbumData XML file on the new mac still had my old macs user name and iPhoto Library name. First Backup your iPhoto Library
1. Quit iPhoto.
2. Open TextEdit in Applications Folder.
3. Open File Users/XXXX/Pictures/iPhoto Library/AlbumData XML
4. Look thru the text to see if you need to change your user name and/or iPhoto Library name.
5. Use Edit Menu, drop down to Find.
6. Find – old info
7. Replace with– new info
8. Replace All
9. Save.
10. Do not open iPhoto.
11. Trash iPod photo cache folder in Users/xxxx/Pictures/iPhoto Library
12. Restart Your Mac. I don’t know if required, but I did it.
13. Rebuild iPhoto library – Hold down Option & Command Keys when opening iPhoto.
14. Select iPhoto Library rebuild.
15. After rebuild make sure it looks OK – if not, then you have other problems.
16. Close iPhoto and check your file paths using TextEdit, refer to #2 above.
17. It should have kept all of your changes.
18. Now Open itunes and sync your iPod.
Hope this Helps. Good Luck

  • How do I restore iPhoto from old computer to new?

I just bought a new computer and would like to merge all of the photos from my old Mac to my new one. How do I do this? I see USB connections but I don't have a usb to usb cord and I am not sure if that exists...? I do have a backup drive. I plugged it in but it is prompting me to backup this new computer, which hardly has anything on it and that is not what I want to do.
I would like to now 2 things-
    1) how do I back up from one computer to the other?
    2) how do I restore my photos from my backup drive to my computer...?

Are there photos on the new Machine?
    If not:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • New MBP, how to transfer software/data from old MBP

I'm picking up a new MBP in a few days. I've upgraded in the past but it's been five yrs. What are the current best practices for moving from old to new MBP's?

Use the Setup Assistant in the new computer. First, connect the two computers using a Firewire cable. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new computer normally for the first time. You will be greeted by the Setup Assistant. Follow the on-screen instructions until you are asked about migrating from another computer or Time Machine backup. Opt for another computer and go with the instructions. You will be guided to migrating your old computer's Home folder, third-party applications, support software, and system preferences.
Now, this process will take quite some time so be patient.

  • New MacBook-How to move some files from Old iBook

    Hello All ...
I just got a new MacBook and I would like to move a few things over from my old iBook.
Mostly I need all my mail stuff and be able to connect to the internet and such. The rest would be files, pictures and other documents ...
What would be the best way to do this ... does migration assistant do it well or should I do it manually? How do I get to migration or setup assistant and should I do it right away or after.
Should I set up my network connections on my new MacBook first and forget about trying to transer everything from my old iBook. I heard that the less you move over the better ..
Any tips or info much appreciated .... thanks

    Hi Neil ...
    thanks for the reply ...
If I move over my user account ... that's pretty well everything inside it... isn't it? .... Is that good?
For example ... I have Microsoft Office 2001 on there ... and I plan on installing and using 2004.
Would that be an application I should delete before using migration ?

  • How to transfer email folders from old Mac to new Mac, How to transfer email folders from old Mac to new Mac

How do I transfer email folders with all messages from a i-Mac G5 (OSX 10.4.11) to a new iMac with OSX 10.6.7?

    Martin,
I would recommend starting over this time using Setup Assistant. Because you are migrating from a PPC machine I would migrate everything EXCEPT applications. You should manually install your apps, this will give you the opportunity to udate the ones that need it and I'm sure there are many. You may even apps that won't run on Intel based machines so why migrate them at all? You can use the Setup Assistant tips beginning at "Second chance...." You can either restore from your old machine or from one of it's backups. I think you'll see it's a pretty clean process, something you passed over (I'm not sure why) when  you turned on the new iMac for the first time.

  • New user - how do i change permissions from old to new user?

I've got a new employee. I need to switch all permissions of files from one employee to the new guy. Any EASY way to do this? Files/folders are in many different sharing points and folders.
    Thanks!!!

A easy, but dirty, way to do this is to change your old employee's UID to something else and change your new employee's UID to the one you just replaced. If you do this as you create the new account, everything might just work out fine. It will truly transfer ownership of everything to the new user.

  • Got a new iphone , how to delete all contacts from old iphone

I got new iphone 3gs and now I want to delete all the contacts and photos from my old iphone 3g. Any ideas?

Two choices: 1. Plug your 3G in, iTunes running, hit the restore button. Restore the phone as a new device. Eject when finished, do not sync. 2. Plug the phone into a wall outlet(can take several hours), then: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings.

  • How can I stop iPhoto from reidentifying faces I have already 'crossed', while still being able to identify and sort new faces.

iPhoto has detected faces of people I dont know, in my 'iPhoto faces' whenever I click the cross in the corner of the face (when sorting faces) the face temporarily disappears, but once I have uploaded a fresh batch of photos (and want to identify new faces) it automatically re-identifies the old photos that I don't want to have to sort again. How can I stop iPhoto from reidentifying faces I have already 'crossed', while still being able to identify and sort new faces.

Thank you, that makes sense (I think!) However, I need to be able to tell iPhoto who the people identified in my photos are, does that make sense? How do I identify the people in my new photos without clicking 'find faces'. I know that button searches through my photos to find faces, but it also gets me to the place where I identify the faces as my friends and family, is there a shortcut to get to that place without clicking 'find faces'? That is what I really need, please help!!

  • How do I update iPhoto from 8.1.2?

How do I update iPhoto from 8.1.2 when the updater says updates complete but it is not showing as updated?

How do i update it to the most current iPhoto.????
Make sure, you have a current backup of your Mac, i.e. your iPhoto Library. On no account risk the upgrade without a current backup. After upgrading to a newer iPhoto version, iPhoto will need to upgrade the iPhoto Library as well. Due to a current bug, the upgrade may go wrong and leave your iPhoto library damaged, if the system should crash during the upgrade, because of running out of storage or similar.
As Larry pointed out, the current iPhoto version 9.6 requires Yosemite, and the App Store will not offer the last compatible version for Mavericks. To upgrade to 9.6 you need to upgrade to Yosemite as well.
You should finish any book projects before upgrading, because the upgrade will change the themes of the books. So your books may change a bit after upgrading.

  • How do I stop iPhoto from repeatedly closing Event title boxes when I am in the middle of entering a title?

How do I stop iPhoto from repeatedly closing Event title boxes when I am in the middle of entering a title?
This problem started several months ago. I have tried typing more slowly and typing faster; neither help.
It now takes me about four attempts to complete a title of about twelve characters, achieving about three characters on each attempt.
    I am running iPhoto 9.4.3 on OS X 10.8.3 on a 2.93 GHz Intel Quad-Core i7 iMac with 12 GB of DDR3 memory.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • How do I stop iPhoto from updating

How do I stop iPhoto from updating itself every time I put a backed up iPhoto disc in to play? Now I quit or force quit iPhoto to stop it happening. Happens every time I install a CD or DVD disc. It cant possibly be necessary every time.

Chances are, that disc was created by an earlier version of iPhoto. iPhoto is trying to convert the library on the disc into an iPhoto 6 library, because the file structure is different in v6. The only fix I know is to copy the disc to your Mac, let iPhoto update your disc as an individual library, then burn a new disc that iPhoto 6 will like.

  • How do i stop iPhoto from automatically opening when I connect my iPhone?

Hi, well as the title states:
How do i stop iPhoto from automatically opening when I connect my iPhone?
    It's getting on my nerves...
    Thanks.

    This might also be helpful:
I wrote an AppleScript that asks me each time I connect the iPhone/camera/etc whether or not I want to open iPhoto. Usually I just hit return and it doesn't open, but once in a while I'll click Yes to open iPhoto and import videos from my phone. I just did it because it's nice to have a little reminder so I don't go for too too long without importing, but not have it slow things down each time I plug in.
Below is the script. Paste it into AppleScript Editor, then export it as an application. Then set Image Capture to open this app when you plug in your phone. Would love to hear if it's helpful for you or if you modify it to use other criteria to automatically import only at certain times or conditions.
    Nathan
set question to display dialog "Open iPhoto to import photos?" buttons {"Yes", "No"} default button 2
set answer to button returned of question
if answer is equal to "Yes" then
              tell application "iPhoto" to activate
    end if

How do you xfer info from ipad2 to imac? Is there an icon on itunes to do this?

What info do you want to transfer and from which app(s) ? If it's contents/files of apps then for some it'll be via the File Sharing section at the device's apps tab when connected to your computer's iTunes, other apps may have wifi functionality so you can transfer files to/from your computer via your wifi network.
