Have no "File" tab to put into Safe Mode to fix missing toolbar

Toolbar items are missing (favorites, back button, etc). Tried to put Firfox in safe mode, but have no "File" tab
== This happened ==
Just once or twice
== when upgraded to newest version

I didn't really get what he meant by that but I figured it out if you don't have the file, edit, view, ect. tabs Hit "Alt F" then they will come up then right click just left of the Help (don't click help itself you just want to right click on the actual menu bar) tab and you should see menu bar unchecked then just click on menu bar and problem solved. Hope this helped someone.

Hello, my iMac won't load only in guest mode can I use anything.. I tried to load in Safe Mode but won't. I have 2 accounts and they are both password protected. Please help!!!

The symptom may be unrelated to FileVault 2. I encountered the symptom with FileVault 2 disabled and with backward conversion (decryption) complete.
Apple reference for my bug report: 152162960. If the symptoms on your Mac compare to those on mine: progress may seem to cease during safe fsck.
Vito, as you are comfortable with the nvram command, please try the following:
    sudo nvram boot-args="-v -x"
Restart the computer and note the last verbose lines that appear before you sense that progress has ceased. Then please add a note of those lines to this topic.

  • UEFI bios boot into safe mode w/o msconfig or F8

Hi, thanks in advance for taking the time to answer.  First off I'm using an ASUS motherboard with UEFI bios on windows 7 64bit.
I'm having trouble with my user account being corrupted and cannot be logged into.  I've already looked up how to fix this issue but it requires me logging into safe mode to do so.
I am aware of the 2 common methods people are prescribing (msconfig and F8) but neither are an option in this situation it seems.
Being that I can't log in, and I do not have a second admin account, I cannot use the msconfig method.  I've already tried hitting F8 during start and it just gives me the option to either boot my HD or enter bios.  I also went through the bios
options and didn't see anything there either.  There's got to be another method than the two I've previously mentioned, right?  Or am I just missing something simple here?

    == Solved problem myself ==
heres how for those with same problem:  after hard restarting my computer quite a few times (apparently its SUPPOSED to do this each time but other folks on the internet and myself find it to only work 40% or less) it went into automatic repair mode.
after that ran through, to no avail (BIG surprise), it allowed me to enter Command Prompt mode outside of windows.  there I was able to enable a safe mode boot loop so each time my computer boots it automatically goes into safe mode.  fixed what
i needed and undid the safe mode loop in msconfig.
back to business as usual!  woot woot

Asus boards BIOS Boot Menu key is F8... this is annoying if you use their boards with Windows installed, as it is also the key for getting the Windows boot menu.
What needs to be done is use the F8 to get the menu, select the hard disk (or boot manager if EFI) and then start hitting F8 after you press enter on the boot device. This is the easiest way I've found, as trying to guess when the boot is handed off from
the board to Windows is hit and miss.

On return home I pressed the start up button and it started normally everything was working fine i decided to reinstall all the software what has caused the problem I have no idea but it is after several attempted reboots it finally started on its own so don't give up if you have this problem it may come to life

  • Wifi goes on and off, backlit keyboard doesn't work and no sound since Lion  upgrade. I can get the wifi back by going into safe mode and re booting(someone suggested on here), but can't let computer die or turn off or have to do it again.

My Wifi connection goes off if computer dies or shuts off, I can only make it work if I go into safe mode and reboot, it was just that, but now my keyboard doesn't light up like it's supposed to in low or no light and in system preferences it's like it doesn't exist.  Also, the sound doesn't work, I can't turn it up or down, it shows the sound icon grayed out and the anti symbol when I push F11 and F12, also it's like it doesn't exist in system preferences either. I have never had any problems with my MB Pro, I purchased in Feb. 2010. , but I upgraded to Lion last month, I haven't been using my laptop as much since I had an Ipad I given to me, so I think that's why I didn't notice these issues right away. What do I do? HELP!! Do I take it to Apple? I don't have the Apple care warranty, so will it be expensive for them to fix? Can I get my money back for Lion if I restore to Snow Leopard?

Take it to an Apple store or AASP. How much it will cost will depend on their determination of the problems. To bad you didn't purchase extended AppleCare. No you don't get your money back for purchasing Lion.

  • Is it possible to have a File Upload dialog incorporated into a Buy Module?

Is it possible to have a File Upload dialog incorporated into a Buy Module? I'd like to guide a user thru the steps to placer an order, one of which is to upload a logo file. It is so much neater to have the Logo Upload be associated directly to an order being placed, rather than having a seperate file upload which is not directly related to an order.

Not at that point no. You can add custom fields to the registration buy form and do it at that stage.

What happens if you don't boot in safe mode first?

  • Will not boot normally, but will boot into Safe Mode... what now?

Hey y'all, I've got an iBook G4—purchased in 2003—that's had its hard drive replaced (due to the OE one failing) and that's on its second battery (which will need replacing soon unless I can't get this resolved, then it's new computer time... ugh).
Last night I left it open and on and probably had a couple of sites open in tabs in Safari, as well as Mail and iChat open (Preview might've been open, too).
When I went back to it this morning it wouldn't come off the black screen (I don't have it set to sleep), and I thought it was because it's dry here and I must've discharged into it through the trackpad (though I've always felt it before), which freezes it, a problem that's happened before and that's normally resolved with a restart. Confirmed it was, indeed, frozen by turning the number lock on and off (which turns the light for it at the top of the keyboard on and off).
Powered it down by holding the power button. On restart it wouldn't go beyond the black screen. Tried it a couple of times, same problem. Things were pretty warm, so I let it sit for a while. Went back to it and it would freeze on the gray apple screen with the progress "gear" freezing after a few seconds of whirling about. Managed to get to the UN/PW screen once, but it froze after entering my UN and PW. Now it freezes on the apple/gear screen every time.
I used the Hardware Test CD to check things and all the hardware tests showed up fine. Booted it into Safe Mode and ran Cocktail. Rebooted, no joy.
Booted again into Safe Mode and backed it up onto an external HDD using CCC. I had done a clone a few weeks ago, but I wanted my most recent emails, etc.
Used Disk Utility to repair permissions. No change. Attempted to boot from my cloned disk image. No go. Repaired some permissions on that drive and tried again. No joy.
The thing "works" in Safe Mode, but I cannot get it to boot into things normally.
Seeing as it was online, is it possible that I picked up some corrupted font that's causing these problems? Got that idea from other stuff I've read online regarding iBook G4 start-up issues and this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
    Any other ideas?

    Gents, truly, thank you.
In safe mode I couldn't disable the Airport card as it was already off and the hardware was "not found". No biggy. I simply pulled it. Booted up normally without a problem several times.
I swapped in a known-good Airport card from another iBook G4 and put this one's in that iBook. That computer wouldn't start and this one started up no problem (and I'm posting from it).
Weird that it would go bad like that, but it did. It's nice to know what the problem is and that the fix is easy. I'm glad I didn't go through any restore or wipe and install procedures.
    So, again... THANK YOU!

  • No reboot after booting into safe mode

For a few years I've just ignored the problem but thought I should take time to mention it now.
When I boot into Safe Mode (holding down the shift key during boot up) I can always click on restart when the password screen comes up and the computers will restart.
But if I log in after safe boot and let the system boot up past the login screen THEN try a restart I get hours of beach ball. I've left various computers running over night and it is always the same in the morning, no restart, no beach but lots of beach ball.
So I do a force shutdown (hold the on/off button for 10 seconds) or a forced restart.
This has been the case from Leopard OSX10.5 and up including Snow Leopard. And on five different Intel Core 2 Duo Macs including 2GHz & 2.4 GHz iMacs and Macbooks.
The common theme is that I have migrated my setup through all these Macs so maybe there is some legacy thing in my software.
    Suggestions?

    Well… some improvement.
Here’s what I did: (note that I did a restart and sometimes safe boot after each and every step.
1 – use FontNuke (free shareware) to blast away font cache files. It found 8 some dating from 2002.
2 – use Apple’s Font Book to reconcile duplicate fonts.
Those two steps fixed my slow down problems with playing movie files in Quicktime and VLC.
But not Skype video. The biggest CPU load with Skype is with the transmitted picture oddly enough.
Then for good measure I zapped the PRAM and PMU. No noticeable improvement from doing those. Obliviously repair permissions and verify disk was done long long ago and redone.
I still have the problem of not being able to reboot from safe mode.
The Startup folders are clean except for Qmaster which I do not believe is the cause of not being able to reboot out of safe mode.
Does anyone know of other files/locations that put 3rd party startup items? I remember finding things from Western Digital and Symantic a few years ago in unexpected places. Symantic was especially hard to track down and eliminate.

  • How to boot T42 into safe mode

    Hi all, first post.
I have a T42 with Firefox 4 installed that is giving me trouble. I  want to be able to boot into safe mode to help troubleshoot the problem.
I have tried to rebbot and use the F8 key but it does not work. I have tried the F11 key and the Access IBM button and both bring me to the Rescue and Recovery login which asks for a password. I don't have the password as I did not set it up. I read on the forums that I could delete and reinstall R&R and that would reset the password.
I uninstalled R&R with rapid restore from the add/rmove programs panel (sorry, I don't remember which version). I have not tried to reinstall anything yet. When I reboot I still get the R&R ogin asking for a password. This leaves me with several questions.
How do I get around R&R, do I need to uninstall something else?
Is there a simpler way to just reset the password?
How do I find out what version of R&R with RR I had and what should I replace it with. Apparently 4.23 may not be my best option. I assume the original Windows backup partition will still be there. I din not have any backups of my own.
Finally, I just need to get into safe mode. Is there an easier way.
    Many thanks for any help!

Try using the msconfig utility's boot tab to turn on the Safe boot checkbox, then restart.
On Windows 7, I can just tap Windows+R, then type msconfig and press Enter. I think in XP, you might see a Run option somewhere on the start menu. Or if you can get into the Task Manager (press Ctrl+Shift+Esc ?), select File > New Task (Run) ...  Or even just browse for msconfig in C:\Windows\System32
It sounds like maybe someone has set up a BIOS password -- this may be irrelevant to getting into safe mode.Or if there is a separate R&R password I never noticed, that should be irrelevant to Windows, too.

  • Why is it still so hard to get into safe mode?

One of the worst features in Windows 8 is the many, many steps it takes to boot into safe mode... and it doesn't always get you there. And sadly, Microsoft has brought that into the Windows 10 preview.
Let's be real for a second. Safe mode is a valuable tool for it techs, and can be helpful to the home user. Getting there is a friggin' nightmare in Windows 8, and it's no easier in windows 10. The UEFI bios and boot manager doesn't help either.
Bring back a functioning F8 key, will ya?
On another note, why the hell can't you boot from a linux-based cd and find the windows 8/10 based OS. Microsoft's virus removal tools are useless if you can't boot into Windows... and "refreshing" the drive also ONLY works if you can load the
Operating system.Pulling the hard-drive to scan it for virus removal should not be necessary, but it seems to be with Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Ran across this article after putting the 10 Tech Preview on my computer last week. Started off with build 9741 and now have 9879 and I just want to totally agree with the poster that Microsoft seems to have forgotten what safe mode is used for, mostly troubleshooting
when something goes wrong and keeps our computers from booting. I stayed away from both 8 and 8.1 and have stayed with 7. So far the tech preview looks OK, and I like the return of the start menu as well as many other familiar Win 7 features and controls.
But, even with 7, I've had endless hours wasted trying to fix the counterintuitive way that Microsoft seems to think (or not think) regarding these sort of issues. I'll gladly give up a couple (or even 30) seconds to have the option to boot into safe mode.
I've fought with Microsoft over and over again about the way they keep trying to automate troubleshooting even when there are very simple manual fixes. Sometimes it seems like they want to just keep users from having the control we want over how our system
works. And it this case it's just plain stupid that you can't choose to boot directly to safe mode by default from a preloading boot menu. Win 7 had terrible problems with "Bootmgr is missing" after even the simplest of issues such as adding files
to a USB or just a bad defrag or user mistake. I spent hours pulling my hair out after such issues and eventually got myself into a hole because of the way Microsoft looked at the issue. 99% of the time I could have fixed my issue by being able to do a repair
install from startup and it never made sense that you could only do an in place or "upgrade" install as they started calling it, If you can already boot into Windows. Lots of good that does when you can't get Windows to boot in the first place. And
so far the Startup repair in Tech preview is just as useless as in Win 7. Except now it's even harder to get to. I played with it a bit to test it and just a simple thing like moving the bootmgr one file down in the directory or just adding 1 small file out
of place was enough to make tech preview unbootable as well when using the older MBR setups. The new startup repair hasn't fixed it once. I don't know what the refresh really does as it doesnt work either. Gives a vague error with no link to a log and no other
information provided , so dont know where to troubleshoot that one.  Win 7 's startup repair almost never worked for me until I learned the trick to run it at least 3 times with reboots and running SFC /offbootdir /offwindir in the middle. All of those
problems could have been fixed by simply allowing us to boot from the install media to re-install without loosing data. I'm glad to see that at least for now you can do a repair install from boot in the current version of 10 Tech Prev. Please keep that for
the later rollout, Microsoft. And stop messing with Safemode, please! I just made the edits to bcdedit to enable the legacy boot so I hope it works. I know it's still early but so far the Tech Preview has been a real challenge. I ran into issues on Win 7 with
missing Vredist C++ files coming up missing after trying to get DirectX 10 to work. There is a stupid loophole there that Direct X will make you delete allx86 and x64 C++ runtimes that it doesn't like, in this case it wouldnt install with the
2005 SP1 C++ redists. After I deleted them to install the Direct X I ran into a whole hell of an issue with corrupted files due to missing components from the  2005 redistribs that Win 7 would basically shutdown and slowly corrupt everything if
any component of that package was missing and then would not allow you to reinstall them if your system was higher than XP yet would not fix corruptions until they were installed. I'm still trying to side fix my Win 7 installs on my other disks as I consitently
cant get certain 2005 C++ redistribs to install. Now having big problems with massive corruptions in Tech Prev, to the point that it becomes totally non responsive and icons and folders almost totally go away in a very short period of time. DISM was
pretty limited in Win 7 so I'm trying to get onto that but the commands are kind of confusing me and it doesn't work consistently and I thing the online store components are not being made available for repair as I get a lot of "failed to obtain image
from provider" messages and it's giving me a lot of problems when I try to mount my iso as a wim file. Hate to say it but I've been working with 10 Tech preview on 2 computers (test out homegroup) and I've installed and reinstalled at least 5 times on
each computer but within 30 minutes of a good install its corrupted again and Dism will stop working all together. Anyway, wish they'd stop messing with our tools. Bring back safemode by default guys.

  • Error Upgrading to SP14.  Putting in Safe Mode.

Before I begin, I will say that I know how to get out of Safe Mode.  Config Tool --> File --> Safe Mode --> No.
When running JSPM, JSPM restarts the J2EE instances and puts them into safe mode.  Then soon after we get an error:  "J2EE Engine is in Safe Mode"
Prior to running JSPM, I've shut down all of the Dialog Instances, and left only the CI running.  I've also disabled all of the SAP_00 services on the DI machines.
After receiving this error, I have taken the servers out of Safe Mode, and resumed deployment.  However, JSPM puts it BACK into Safe Mode and then gives the same error.

  • Windows 7 fails to go into safe mode. Stuck at classpnp.sys

Hi, I wanted to go into safe mode on windows 7 but it kept stopping at classpnp.sys . After reading a few threads I read about using Msconfig and checking the safe mode option under "Boot". It still keeps staying at classpnp.sys and when I hit F8 and hit "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)" it seems to be able to get trough and it says it's actually loading up safe mode but then it changes to a black screen and does not change from that screen. I would appreciate and information you guys have that could solve this problem. If any of you know a command I could type in cmd to bring up the msconfig while in repair mode I  could fix it because all I need to do is untick "Safe mode on startup"

This happened to me because I tried to install Fallout 3 too. I tried doing the c:\windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys to classpnp.old but then it just stops at the one before and goes on to say windows is starting in safe mode but then it shuts off and restarts.
Glad to hear tat Fallout 3 is still being played.
Firstly there are a few things that I have discovered. Classpnp.sys causes a few problems with the system. As I don't know what your system or brand of computer you are using, I'm not sure exactly what advice to give. However it should work a little something like this. When you start your computer you will see the brand name of the company who built the system (ie. Acer, HP, Compaq etc) Press either alt  + F10 or alt + F11.
This will bring you to a recovery type menu. From here you can do a system restore you will loose any un-backed up data. This trick will restore your systems factory defaults systems. I have not been able to try this myself yet.
Also depending on your what OS you are using you could try and and get a hold of either the Vista or Windows 7 recovery disks.
You can download them from here:
    http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
You will need a burning software as recovery disks need to be on disk so you can boot it up during windows start up.
    Use this software: ImgBurn
    http://www.imgburn.com/
Its free and is very effective (I can see this having more use with other iso files of mine)
Again I have been unable to try this myself.
And the last option short of formatting the drive is to use another piece of software called Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop.
This is freeware that needs to be downloaded (http://www.ubuntu.com/) and then burnt on to a disk using the ImgBurn mentioned above.
Put the disk into the drive and but it up during windows start up.
You also need to download a replacement classpnp.sys file. You get this from http://www.hotfile123.com/index.php?q=classpnp+sys
(I also haven't tested this file yet but there other options on the site)
While using Ubuntu find the classpnp.sys (C:\windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys) rename this to classpnp.bak
Copy the recently downloaded version of the classpnp.sys to replace the old one.
Exit and restart. The computer may lag a bit but should eventually boot into safe mode.
Sadly I haven't been able to try this yet either.
Although none of this helps with getting fallout 3 to install any easier.
I will post with my progress and with what works in the near future. Hope any else can do the same.
    Good luck.
