Have old Airport Express /g. How much faster will 802.11/n be?
We're still using an Airport Express from years ago that is 802.11/g (or whatever the proper designation is! )
If we upgrade to a /n model, will we see any noticeable real-world speed up in Internet browing using:
1) an original iPad,
2) an early 2008 MacBook Pro, or
3) an iPhone 4?
Just wondering whether it's even worth doing it. Plus, what then do we do with the old one? (I suppose keep it hooked up to a different printer.)

No....unless your plan with your Internet Service Provider is higher than 50 Mbps.

Bottom line: I don't believe it's possible to use your old AirPort Express with Mountain Lion. The current AirPort Utility is 6.3.1.

Has anyone seen a number that tells us how much faster the new ipad 4 will charge?
Can anyone guess how much faster the ipad 3 would charge with the new charger brick?
I can't even find estimates in articles on the web... Maybe we won't know till some of them ship?

I'm sure hoping the ipad 4 does better than that.

My computer (Apple iMac Desktop 24" -- 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive) is coming up on four years old. I use it extensively for video production, including Final Cut Studio.

It sounds like you want to setup your Airport Express to Airplay music from iTunes. I found an article with steps to help you get this setup:
Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music
AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.
Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network.
How to Set It Up
Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers.
From your computer, join the wireless network. Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar on a Mac. On a Windows-based computer, hold the pointer over the wireless connection icon until you see your AirPort network name (SSID), and choose it from the list if there are multiple networks available. Enter the network password, if necessary.
Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.

I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?
When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features. -

i just bought my first imac (intel) and a wireless hp printer. i now realize that a wireless connection between my imac and my printer needs a router.
i have an airport express base station, which is a few years old. I can't find my documentation, so i don't know its specifications.
how can i find out the specs of the airport express i have and whether i can use it now? it says that it is model a1084 100-240v~ 0.2a 50-60 hz.
does that tell any knowledgeable people out there about the specs? can i search the apple website by serial number and find the specs?

I have an AirPort Express, iPhone 5, and MacBook (late 2010). How do I see the graphical overview of my network? (I can't seem to find a way to see it).
My computer is acting....well, strange. I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't seem right. Menus look skewed. Some applications look like they're trying to disguise themselves as apple (no consistant window formats). Airplay turns on and off on my devices on it's own. And some locked system preference seem to unlock themselves, or won't even grey-out after I lock them.
I have changed my password many times but the issue keeps coming back. I feel like I'm going crazy - but I know that something just isn't right...maybe someone's been hacking me? (I have no idea why...)
Anyway, maybe I could have stemmed from an improper setup of my wireless network.
Any thoughts?

I am trying to find out if my old Airport Express can be upgraded from WEP to WPA2? If so, does anyone know how to do this? I have a new PC for work reasons and I cannot get online with my WEP password. I realize now this is why my family and friends who bring PC's into the house cannot connect - I need WPA2 for PC, and besides, I should upgrade anyway as this is more secure than WEP. Does anyone at Apple have help for this sort of question - I too have an old printer (HP LaserJet 5MP) that I would like to keep using on my Mac. (Mac OSX 10.6.8).
I got it working by getting a USB cord that connects to it - but every once in a while it just stops working for weeks. The mac 'sees' it and it sends the data because the printer lights start blinking but then it just doesn't do anything. Is there no one who can tell me (and raterada) how to get some new life into these old printers. I would rather not add this (and a new toner cart) to the landfill just yet. . . -

Hi, as the title suggests I have an old Airport Express that I have always used wirelessly to connect to my hifi but now that I have upgraded to Yosemite it won't connect via Airport Utility 6.3.4 and Yosemite won't let me use Airport Utility 5.6 Seems I'm stuck between a rock and hard place! Ethernet is no use as the hifi is in another room. Yosemite is running on an iMac and is connected wirelessly to Virgin Broadband. Thanks, Alex.
If the AirPort Express is very old, such as the original 802.11b/g - only models A1084 or A1088 you will need a commensurately older version of both AirPort Utility and OS X to configure it. Those models were discontinued about seven years ago and support for them is gone. Ethernet won't make a difference anyway.
You may find instructions or links to web sites with instructions to modify OS X in an effort to circumvent that restriction. I cannot emphasize enough just how bad an idea that would be. -
I have a new Airport Extreme and and old airport express. I am getting an amber status light on the Extreme and a green light on the Express. The Extreme is blinking amber all the time.

Click on the AirPort Extreme icon
Click on the amber dot in the small window
It might be a message that a firmware update is available for your AirPort Extreme. -

How can I use my old AirPort Express (the one that plugs right into the wall without a power cable) to stream music to a stereo when I am using the new Airport Express? The AirPort Utility 6.1 will not recognize the old AirPort Express.
Apple does not make it easy for you to use an older device when they want you to buy newer devices.
See this link for tips on how to install a version of AirPort Utility on Mountain Lion that will allow you to configure your older Express:

I am currently running a PowerPC G5 imac and have a wired broadband modem via ethernet with airport wireless network turned on, on the G5. I have the computer in the bedroom and have an airport express wired into a mixer that connects to my stereo. I have recently bought another airport express base station to connect to a pair of active monitors in the kitchen. When I try to scan these on Airport Utility version 5.42 I am only managing to scan one base unit at a time. I have plugged them in separately and reset them, they both have firmware updates, however the utility will only read one at once. I have read that you can link base stations to the same WDS. I would like to know how to go about doing this if it will only scan one airport express at a time. I have looked it up on the net and not found anything that is a simple fix. Can anyone help? In Apple Support it says that multiple Base Stations can be used. I would like to get both Apple Airport Express units to be able play airtunes separately or at the same time depending where I am in my flat. I do not need different music in each room. I would like to stream music from the computer to multiple rooms in the flat without having to continually unplug and configure the Base Stations. Has anyone come across such a challenge? Any help would be welcome.
How do I configure the AX to connect to the hub's wireless network? It will only scan one base station Airport Express at a time in the Airport Utility. I think what I am trying to do is use the hub as a router to the two AX's. Is there a specific way to set this up?
To set up the AX to join a wireless network as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
Launch the AirPort Utility.
Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX.
