Have old G4 Running OS 10.4.10 but want OS 9.1 back!!!!

I have an old G4 450Mhz PowerPC which used to run 9.1 and I have the disc. When I purchased a new system, I installed OS 10.4.10 on the old G4 as well. Now I have some programs that I need 9.1 in order to run. When I go to install 9.1 from the disc, it says I do not have 9.1 installed (classic version) and need to install it. I am at a loss! I no longer need to run OS X on this system and would like to have just OS 9.1. Can I wipe it out and just install 9.1?

Hi, Jay -
When I go to install 9.1 from the disc, it says I do not have 9.1 installed (classic version) and need to install it.
That message indicates you are trying to run the OS 9.1 installer app (on the CD) while the machine is still booted to OSX.
That won't work - the OS 9.1 installer app will work only when the machine is booted to OS 9.
Since you apparently do not have Classic on the machine at present, the solution then is to boot the machine to the OS 9.1 Install CD. In case you have forgotten how to do that, with the CD in the drive Restart the machine. Immediatel;y press the C key, keep it held down until it is confirmed that the machine is booting to the OS 9.1 on the CD. Note - booting to a CD takes considerably longer than does booting to a hard drive, so wait it out.
Once the machine has booted to the CD run the Mac OS Install app. Select to do a Clean Install - doing so will prevent the installer from being confused by the presence of one of OSX's internal folders (which it can misinterpret as being a valid System Folder, but one of unknown version). Note that doing a Clean Install of OS 9 will not remove anything on the hard drive.
Article #TA43881 - Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation
It is possible that after the machine has booted to the CD that the hard drive will not be visible, neither on the desktop nor in the installer's destination selection page. If that is the case, it indicates that when OSX was installed, the hard drive was reformatted and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected. In the absence of those drivers no OS 9 can 'see' the hard drive.
This Apple Kbase article gives on possible solution for that, in the section titled "I. Try Drive Setup first:
Article #TA20774 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
Unfortunately that no-pain method of fixing the issue rarely works. If it does not, then the only solution is to reformat the hard drive. If using OS 9's Drive Setup to do it (while booted to the OS 9 Install CD), the OS 9 drivers are installed automatically. If using OSX's Disk Utility (while booted to an OSX Install disk) to do it, be sure to select the option to install OS 9 drivers. In either case be sure to select Mac OS Extended as the format for the drive.
Caution Note - reformatting a drive (using any utility) will completely erase the drive. Before doing so, be sure you have backed up any files you do not want to lose.

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

You must upgrade to Snow Leopard, then Lion. There is no direct upgrade from Leopard to Lion.

  • I have a ibook running on 10.3 and I want to update it to 10.4 or above,is this possible ?

I Have an ibook running on 10.3 and I want to update it to 10.4 or above ,is this possible ?

    Firstly, can you run it?
Minimum System Requirements for OS X 10.4 Tiger:
    A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    Built-in FireWire
At least 256 MB of RAM
DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools
    More information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301341
Secondly, you may find it difficult to get. Look on eBay or Amazon for a black retail install disk. Don't be surprised at the price.
Thirdly, your iBook is a decade or more out of date and officially obsolete. Is it not time to quietly retire it and get something more modern?

The Mid-2007 model didn't come out until June 2007, so you must have bought an earlier model. It won't run Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x), but it might run Lion (10.7.x) if you can get hold of a copy, depending on which earlier model it is.
Lion requires at least a Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The first MacBook Pros came out in January 2006, but they had "Core Duo" processors (no "2"). The Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros came out in October 2006. You could have bought either in March 2007.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.
If you want to create a bootable clone of your hard drive, you need to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or the Disk Utility's Restore feature > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html

iTunes does not support drag and drop for iOS devices.
Connect either the iPod or iPad to your computer, launch iTunes.
Select the iPod (iPad) under Devices left side of the iTunes window in the source list.
    Select Books from the menu.
Then click the Sync button bottom right side of the iTunes window.
You can select All Books or Selected Books.

Have two mail accounts and i want to keep them separate but want to EASILY switch back and forth from the main screen instead of going through, Settings, Mail, and selecting account. Major pain the butt.  This has been a request from Apple users for many years.    it's great you can now combine all emails into one, but some people want them kept separate and have separate icons on the main page.   They could easily do this by having one "MAIL" account as white and another red.  Or put MAIL 1 and MAIL 2.    Or an actual label that the mail accounts are called on the ICONS!!
    Help!

    eshghoolak wrote:
...I could switch back and forth between accounts while in the mailbox, with one button.  I think that is what you are referring to?  Whoever said it's just a simple switching - you obviously haven't had the pleasure of using an Android device.  It's not that quick to go back and forth - definitely not efficient...
Not that it matters a lot, Android vs iPhone interface is largely a matter of personal preference and what you know... I'm not sure which one you're saying is not efficient...
    In any event...
I currently have two email accounts setup.  My iPhone main page Mailbox settings reads:
    Mailboxes
    Inboxes
    All Inboxes
    Gmail
    [email protected]
    Accounts
    Gmail
    [email protected]
I wish there an efficient way to move back and forth while in the "Inbox" between accounts.  Also, Why does one gmail account show as "Gmail" and another as the actually address?
The names are based on the names you gave the accounts when you set them up.
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap the account you want to re-name. Go to the "Description" field and put in what ever you want.
Second, there is no way to quickly choose a bunch of emails to delete. I have to manually go into each one and move it to the Trash folder.
If you tap the edit button in the upper right while in mail, you can select multiple items to move, delete or mark (flag).
I don't want any of the condescending remarks, that I've read here and in other forums.  I'm honestly looking for a solution, which I think you are too!  One thing I realized is that iPhone users in these forums are really defensive and quick to say "that's how it is, live with it, if you don't like it go away"  Um...the only thing that tells me is you are pretty bitter and have kept telling yourself that, to force yourself to like your device.  I prefer to express my issues, and find solutions.  There is ALWAYS a solution...
I think what you will find is that many people here, myself included, tend to get a bit short with people who start off with attacks or whining about how something has been asked for for years and should be easy, rant about things that have already been beaten to death multiple times in the forums, talk about how much better Android or BB are at something (really... if it's that much better, why did they buy an iPhone to begin with?), etc., or continue to ask questions that could easily be answered with a simple search, or even just by looking back at the last dozen posts to the forum, half of which probably asked the EXACT SAME question.
I don't think any of us go out of our way to be rude or uncivil.  That said, attacking the people who are attempting to help you is much more likely to generate a response of 'if you don't like it, go away', than it is to generate something that will be truly helpful.

  • How do I update my old MacBook to the newest operating system, but want to clean it out thoroughly first (without losing my data). How should I best go about doing this?

Hi everybody. I have a MacBook that's about five years old. I want to buy the newest operating system so that it runs better (because currently it is struggling), however I would like to clean up all the old software before I do that. I want it to be as clean and new as possible before I buy the new operating system, instead of just downloading it ontop of all of the rubbish I must have accumulated. I also want to keep my data (documents, photographs etc). Would anybody be kind enough to provide me with a step-by-step (can be as concise as you like, depending on how much time/effort you have to explain!) guide as to how I might go about doing this myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank so much guys.

Step number one - Back up all your important data!
Seriously, it sounds like you are working without backups. Don't ever do this. Hard drives fail, it is a fact of life. Don't be one of those who get caught without a backup. An external hard drive, burning it all to DVDs, or online backup will save you frustration and money.
Two - don't expect a new operating system to improve performance. Get the computer running as best as it can before you upgrade. You may need more RAM or a bigger hard drive.

  • I have an old iBook running 10.3.9 and I want to wipe/erase the disk and get rid of it. Problem is Disk Utility doesn't allow me to erase, it has everything grayed out. And I don't have the original startup CD. Any ideas?

Need to wipe 10.3.9 iBook with no OSX cd and disk utility not allowing me to do it.

You need to use an alternate system; this can be a Mac OS X install disk or a system on an external drive. If needed, buy one from a source such as Amazon or eBay, or phone Apple and ask if they have replacement original disks in stock.
