Have set Elements 12 as external editor for iPhoto =, but pictures identified for editing don't appear in Elements

Have just installed Elements 12 and nominated it as the external editor for iPhoto. When I identify a pic for edit in iPhoto and direct it to Elements it doesn't appear in Elements.
Help please

Usually that means you selected the logical file as your external editor instead of the correct one. The actual PSE editor is buried inside the Support Files folder:

  • I have set up photoshop elements as external editor in iPhoto but I cannot get the edited photo to open in iPhoto. When I save the photo Elements asks where do I want to save it and iPhoto is not an option.

I have set up Photoshop Elements11 as the External Editor in iPhoto just as Terence Devlin said. However when I save the edited photo it does not appear in iPhoto. A drop down menu asks where I want to save the photo and I do not know what to choose. Also should I choose, "save" or "save as"? I should be really grateful for your help.

I suggest opening iPhoto and reverting back to iPhoto in the Preferences for photo editing. Quit iPhoto. Restart your Mac for good measure. Open iPhoto and again choose Photoshop Elements in Preferences as the editing app.
As far as editing, I don't have PE, but I have another editing app form the Mac App Store, ColorStrokes. I have been experimenting with using it for editing iPhoto photos and it works flawlessly. After setting ColorStroke as the editing app, I open a photo in iPhoto and click the Edit button in the menu bar below the photo. Color Stoke immediately opens with the photo and I complete my editing. When I have finished editing I choose to Save the photo, leave the name the same and agree to replace the iPhoto photo of the same name. I quit ColorStroke and the photo in iPhoto now has all of my edits from ColorStroke.
Should I decide that I prefer the original photo, I open the photo in iPhoto and choose Revert to Original in the Photos pulldown menu.

  • How can I set pixelmator as my external editor in iPhoto

I am trying to set pixelmator in iphoto so I can edit using external editor. Any suggestions?
    Thank you in advanced
    Slapshot2deface

Hello all. I'm hoping this thread is still fresh enough that I can glom onto it.
I just downloaded Pixelmator a couple days ago.  Also allowed the recent iPhoto update.  I do not have the above mentioned option in my iPhoto Preference - General.  Mine appears in the Advanced section and my only choice besides iPhoto for editing is Preview.
Any ideas how I can make it Pixelmator if it doesn't show in the list?
    Thanks

i have set pse as my default editor in iphoto. when i double click a photo to edit, PSE 11 launches, but there is no photo displayed.
i have a similar query in the adobe forum.
and as an aside, where the heck are the picture files after i import them from my camera or phone?

You are selecting the wrong file in the PSE 10 folder as the file to use.  It should be the one inside the Support file folder:

  • Using Aperture as External Editor in iPhoto

I have selected Aperture as the external editor in iPhoto (iPhoto preferences), because I am happy with the way iPhoto handles files, with no confusion, but I love "brushes" in Aperture.
Once I have edited an iPhoto picture in Aperture, how do I save it back to iPhoto? The only way I have found at the moment is to export it to the desktop from the Aperture editor, and then import it back into iPhoto. Sort of clumsy, when I get it from iPhoto to Aperture editor with one click.

Once I have edited an iPhoto picture in Aperture, how do I save it back to iPhoto?
    You can't.
Like iPhoto, Aperture is a database, not a pixel editor like Photoshop.

  • PSE12 as external editor in iPhoto

I have selected PSE12 as my external editor in iPhoto Preferences, but when I select a photo and click edit, only PSE opens, not the photo. How can I fix this? Thanks.

I've also selected "SAve As to Original Folder".
No, never, never, never this when using iphoto. That's telling PSE to try to write Save As into the iphoto library, a sure-fire way to corrupt it and lose all your photos. Please change that back.
Yes, iphoto doesn't do PSD, but you can use TIFF instead.

  • How do I set up Premiere Elements 13 as the custom external editor for Lightroom 5?

    Situation
I own Lightroom 5.6 and I'm experienced. I've just bought Premiere Elements 13 and I'm a video-editing virgin (be gentle with me). I've spent a day experimenting, reading, watching videos and I'm still stuck (I've tried reasonably hard to solve my own problem).
    Problem
I've tried to set up the custom external editor in Lightroom 5 to send photos to Premiere Elements, so that I can incorporate images into movies. Having set it up, when I use it by selecting Photo/Edit In/Premiere Elements 13/, there is an exciting lull as a copy of the image is created and appears in LR, then Premiere Elements launches, then what??? There is no clue as to what has happened to the image regarding its import into Premiere Elements 13. It doesn't appear on the screen, it doesn't appear in the Organizer, it's no-where to be seen, other than in LR!
    Resolution sought:
    Can anyone tell me
    1. Is it possible to use Premiere Elements as an external editor in LR5 ?
    2. What are the precise settings should be for each field?
    3. If I configure it correctly, what does good look like: what should I expect to see happen in Premiere Elements?
I don't know if this is relevant: MacBook Pro 16GB 2.8Ghz i7, 750GB SSD (i.e. plenty of space, plenty of horsepower), OS X 10.9.5
I also don't know if I this is the right place for my question (Adobe directed me here) so please don't shout at me if I've come to the wrong place (I expect if I get no joy here, when I post it to an LR forum, they'll shout at me too :-)
    Thanks

I do not have Lightroom 5 or other version of it. I did do some work on an earlier version tryout of it.
And, I believe now as then, that the answer to your question is No. Bottom line, if there is integration
to be found between Lightroom, it is between Photoshop Elements and the Elements Organizer, not the Premiere Elements Editor.

  • Photoshop elements 11 as external editor for iPhoto

I have set up Photoshop Elements 11 as external editor for iPhoto on my iMac. I believe if set up correctly the edited photo should never leave iPhoto. When saving the edited version it should automatically appear in iPhoto. This is not happening. When either closing the edit window or choosing: <file : save> another dialogue box appears asking where to save the picture. Can someone please help me to set up Photo shop Elements so that the photo stays in iPhoto?

  • HELP- Need to set up Elements 10 as external editor from LR3, but layers aren't available

Help! I am trying to set up Elements10 to open as external editor from LR3 but I must not be doing something right. When I "edit in" and select elements10 from LR3, it brings the photo up. However, none of the layers options are available. They are all grayed out. I need to be able to access layers. Help!!!! Anyone know what's going on?

You probably exported the photo to photoshop elements 10 as a 16 bits/channel file, so go to Image>Mode in photoshop elements 10
and click on 8 bits/channel so you can use layers.

  • When using Photoshop Elements 9 as external editor my iPhoto version does not update

I am using Photoshop Elements 9 as an external editor in iPhoto V9.4.2
My photo's are Raw and they open in Elements fine for me to edit. When I go to save or exit I have problems. I get options to choose from - I am assuming that saving them as JPEG now they are edited is the best choice. However it shows me a file location where it will be saved and this is not the iPhoto libary. Even so, I save them where PSE wants to and when I go back to them in iPhoto they are not shown as edited (either in preview thumbnail or full version and regardless of which folder I look at them from). I shut iPhoto down and re-open and still they are not changed. I have watched the Adobe lesson on this and it is identical right up to the point of 'saving'. I have read other question on this and followed some advice but not getting the desired result of showing up in iPhoto still.
    Thank you.

Are you using PSE and saving the edit as described below?
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • PSE6 as external editor for iphoto

I've trawled the forum but can't find a solution, perhaps somebody can help? I have just installed PSE6. Having set PSE6 as the default external editor in iPhoto, when I click edit in iPhoto the PSE6 app opens and I can start playing with the image no problem. However, if when in PSE6 I select File>Open and try to select an image from iPhoto the OPEN button remains grayed out.
Enable: All readable documents & Format: JPEG are selected. Clicking on an image brings up the file size beside the Format:JPEG drop menu indicating that it knows which file I am selecting but still the OPEN button remains grayed out. I also tried the Create Montage function. A new project is created and the idea is you click on an empty space within the project and it takes you to iPhoto to select an image. Again as soon as iPhoto opens the OPEN button is grayed out.
I've read on other forums people experiencing similar issues but as yet I've not read about a solution. It's very frustrating because I chose PSE6 on the basis that it works seamlessly with iPhoto. Does anybody have any ideas or can you direct me to a thread that addresses this issue? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • PSE 10 as external editor for Aperture 3 - 8-bit TIFF and what color space?

    Hi all,
I'm taking the plunge and trying PSE 10 as my external editor for Aperture 3.  I understand that I need to export as 8-bit TIFF files (not 16) because PSE can't do certain things with 16-bit files.  Is that right?  Should I specify a color space in Aperture or leave it as "no profile selected"?  (I don't know much about color spaces; I'm not a pro.)  I print on an Epson RX580 Stylus Photo printer, if that matters.
I'll be grateful for any help and advice.  Thanks.

Can I suggest you buy Philip Andrews book, Advanced Photoshop Elements 10.  he explains colour spaces and much much more very clearly and exactly what can be done with 16 bit files and what you then have to change to 8 bit to accomplish.  He's written basic and advanced guides for Elements since day one.  Usually available from Amazon for under £20.

  • Problem using Aperture as external editor for Photoshop CS5...

I am having trouble using Aperture as my external editor for Photoshop - if, for example, I select twenty photos and choose "edit in photoshop CS5," for some reason or another, only ten or twelve photos will show up. Some photos are always missing, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Has anyone else noticed this? It is really frustrating and slowing my workflow down immensely. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Casey.
First lets make sure we have the flow going the correct way.  You are using Aperture, and use PSCS5 as your external editor (external to Aperture).  Right?
Second, what size are your Masters?  When you use PS directly (not calling it from Aperture) do you regularly open twenty files at a time?
My Masters are about 25 MPix each.  PS sizes them in the 140 MB range.  Opening twenty of them at once -- for me that's about 3 GB of data -- will probably bog things down.  Does the problem occur if you open just, say, five at a time?  What's your hardware?  How do you have PS set-up?
And -- my top suggestion for improving your work rate: do in Aperture as much of the work as you can, and send out to PS as little as possible.  You don't say what kind of work you are doing, but Aperture, for many, suffices for almost all of there photograph processing needs.

  • Aperture as external editor for iPhoto problem

When I set Aperture as external editor in iPhoto, Aperture opens as it should , but the photo to be edited does not appear in the Viewer pane. I have to import it manually. This is not the way it should behave, is it?

As Ian says, it can't be used in this way. To elaborate: Aperture is a Database and cannot see or manipulate photos that have not been imported into the db. Just like iPhoto, in fact.
