Have songs on my hard drive already, but still has iCloud icon next to it in iTunes...

So I'm confused as to how iTunes Match should work apparently.  I have it turned on and it works fine, but all of the songs in my iTunes library (connected to airport extreme) says they are in the iCloud instead of local.  So then if I press the download button for that song, it downloads it and duplicates the song on the hard drive!  How weird!  Why wouldn't it just point to the file on my hard drive since it's already there?
Or once we turn on Match, should we go and delete our entire local library?  I'm just confused.
I also thought I could play them and it would show as downloaded by pointing to the hard drive version, but no dice.  Apparently it only streams from a Mac.
The whole reason this is an issue (besides *** backwards functionality) is I am trying to export a playlist and it only shows downloaded songs in the text file, not songs in iCloud, even though all the songs are on my hard drive!
Anyway, and ideas would be great.
Thanks,

With iCloud, is there a need to backup music anymore?  If you lose your hard drive, can't you just download it again from iCloud?  That was my impression at least.
Read this: FAQ: Why iTunes Match Can Not Be Used as a Backup. If you care about your data you'll still keep local backups of all your personal data. Cloud storage is nice and all that but Apple doesn't market iTunes Match as a backup solution and because the matching is not 100% accurate nor does the service store Apple Lossless files, it is not a viable backup solution. For cloud backups you want a company like Backblaze or Mozy or one of the others available who are backup solutions.

Currently both MBPr and iMac have the iTunes Media folder pointed to the Drobo.  However, I did notice that some music files were downloaded locally on the MBPr, which I think are from the auto download feature.  Not sure though.
Yeah, the home sharing thing may work.  I wanted for both machines to be able to see purchases from either machine, or iPhones.  That's why I wanted them to share a library.  So if I bought a song on my laptop, I could run upstairs and see if on the iMac as well.  Maybe library sharing is the best way to do that however.
Keep in mind that any purchases made on the MBPr will be downloaded, and with automatic downloads turned on purchases from other devices will also be downloaded. Right off the top of my head I don't know if this will result in duplicate downloads, but as long as the MBPr is on the local network and iTunes has the library pointing at the Drobo it will all go into the same spot. BUT... if you make a purchase on the MBPr while away from the local network that purchase will be downloaded to the local internal HDD.
So a variation on the theme I talked about above is to, perhaps, not make any purchases on the MBPr and turn off auto-downloads for purchases and keep iTunes Match and Home Sharing enabled. This will enable you to access the music library while home and away and not keep any media on the internal HDD.

  • Changed hard drive successfully, but still have a question.

I just replaced the internal hard drive in my Intel Mac Mini with a new 250G 2.5 inch SATA drive (Seagate Momentus). The original hard drive had died, after showing symptoms of illness for a while. The operation was a success, and everything is working fine, but the way I did it, it wouldn't have been possible without a second Mac, as described below. So I'm wondering if I'm missing some basic concept here. Seems like I should have been able to do it with just the install DVDs.
I was following an instructional video at this site, http://tinyurl.com/2fow2q, which had been recommended to me in an earlier thread of mine. That made the physical part of replacing the drive easy enough. When I went to boot up, though, with the DVD in the drive, it wouldn't recognize that there was any hard drive in the computer at all.
I assumed that I had broken something when I had the computer open. In desperation, I took a fairly new, almost unused firewire external drive that I had, and used my MacBook to set it up as a bootable drive. Then I connected it to the Mini, turned it on again, and was able to install OS X on the external drive. With the Mini working again, I used Disk Utility to look at the drives, and discovered that it did see the internal one, it just didn't know what format it was in. So I partitioned it as a bootable drive, turned off the Mini, disconnected the external drive, and booted it up again with the DVD. This time it saw the drive, and I was able to install OS X to it.
It has occurred to me that maybe I could have skipped a step by hooking the Mini up to my MacBook, booted it up in target mode, and then have used the MacBook's Disk Utility to partition the drive. But I didn't think of this at the time, and I was just assuming that I had physically broken something inside the Mini.
What I would like to know is if there was any way to do this without my second Mac. I had naively assumed that the DVD would allow the Mini to detect the drive, and just partition it properly before starting the rest of the install. I had bought the drive from Tiger Direct, and was sure that it wouldn't come properly formatted, but I thought the install would take care of that.
If I had bought from a dealer that specializes in Macs, like the one I linked to above, could I assume that the drive would have arrived already formatted for OS X? I notice that their advertising doesn't specifically say this. Are there other partitioning tools that would have allowed me to set up the drive without having another computer handy, say some other CD or DVD? I remember changing hard drives back when I used Windows, and getting a bootable CD which would partition the drive before you installed the OS, but nothing like that came with this one.
Any advice welcome. As things turned out, I found a solution, but it became obvious that I hadn't known everything I needed to ahead of time.

if you were to get hold of a hard disk caddie (carrier) such as:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-5-SATA-HDD-Hard-Drive-External-Enclosure-Caddy-1K_W0QQ itemZ220335852761QQcmdZViewItem
then your mac would just see it as an external drive and you would be able to reformat/partition it as you see fit.

How do I stop popups from coming up? I have checked the box for popups already.

If these ads have a black border on one side with a square "Hide Ad" button with an 'X' in it, then you are infected with the Downlite adware, at least. You may have more than one piece of adware installed.
If the instructions in the Adware Removal Guide that Kappy referred you to are too tough to follow, that page also has a link to an Adware Removal Tool that will automatically remove Downlite and anything else for you. If you don't want to trust some app that a random guy online referred you to (which is perfectly understandable), the manual instructions will do the job just as well... you could always have a tech-savvy friend help you follow them.

  • HT1751 I successfully captured a recent itunes library, but then all the songs have "!" marks next to them and won't play. I have thousands of songs in multi folders of my external hard drive, surely there is a way to auto locate all songs on my hard driv

My desktop PC recently crashed and I'm trying to recapture all of my iTunes library playlist and songs. I was able to successfully capture the library, however when I tried to play a song, all have the exclamation mark "!" on them and ask that I locate the song. I successfully located some, but there has to be an automatic way to do this, rather than finding each one. I have thousands of songs located in multiple folders of my exteernal hard drive and need a way to find all songs automatically. Can someone help? Thanks!

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

    Terry,
Plug your iPhone 5 into your Leopard Machine.
    Fire up iPhoto.
The phone should become available in iPhoto, and then you can import the camera roll.

    A Espinoza,
The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities.  So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.

  • I have backed my iTunes with over 10,000 songs on a hard drive and than i reset my computer to factory settings, when i put it back on my macbook pro only 2030 were able to be downloaded back to the same computer

i have backed my iTunes with over 10,000 songs on a hard drive and than i reset my computer to factory settings because my email was hacked, when i downloaded the music back to my macbook pro only 2030 were able to be downloaded . how can i download all my music back?
    michel p.

I usually err on the sideof caution when someone says "downloaded" and take it to mean anything fro actually downloaded, to copies, to imported, to moved (frolder to folder), but even if they were "downloaded"... if the old email was hacked, and subseuqently closed out, that leaves the downloaded files "orphaned" if you will, belonging to the old ID. So, while they may be on the HD, they're inaccessible now.
One of the biggest reasons I NEVER keep anything in my library with DRM employed in it.  I bought it. I own it. I'm not going to get locked out of it.

    Hi,
The simplest solution would to restore from your back up - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4112
If you do not have a back, you can select first track on list in song view, from menu > edit > select all. Next ctrl+click and select download from pop up. You may wish to do this in small batches as it will take some time to download.

  • Syncing some songs onto iPhone hard drive via USB, but streaming the rest via iCloud?

    Hi,
I have a lot of music, well over 50 GB. I have iCloud and iTunes Match. I recently got a 32GB iPhone 5. I was under the impression that I could sync some of my music library onto my iPhone via USB from my mac, but then still be able to access the rest of my songs via iCloud?
    1. I live out in the country where cell service and/or Wifi is not always available.
    2. I would like to have the songs I listen to most on my iPhone's hard drive, so I don't have to waste my data to stream them. However, if there's an artist that I don't listen to very often and is not on my hard drive, I would still like to be able to pull them up and stream them via iCloud.
When I had iTunes Match turned on on my iPhone, I would press Sync on iTunes and nothing would happen. I could access all of my music on my iPhone, but none of it was actually on the hard drive, it was all just streaming from iCloud. Searching around online and on these forums, I found that the only way to actually put music onto the iPhone's hard drive is to turn iTunes Match off. However, I also read that if you turn it back on after, it will just erase your previous library?
It seems there should be a way to do this? I can't be the only person with too many songs to fit on the iPhone that doesn't want to pay to stream every song?
I have also heard a lot of bad things about syncing via Wifi, and that it will eat up your data plan. I would like to be able to sync my songs via USB, but then still access the rest of my library via iCloud.
Please let me know if this is possible. Any assistance is appreciated.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet and it could not detect the the ip address after i input the correct address on "Connect to Server" window. Please help! Urgent! Thanks

I did not say it is not possible.
I said if your company networks are monopolizing both ports, you should talk to them about what options are available.
Maybe you can get the company Intranet over wireless if you change some configuration items such as Subnet Mask.
Maybe you can get on the Internet over Ethernet.
You really need to ask them, and do not let them blow you off because you have a Mac. If they balk, ask them how it would be done on a PC (becasue it will be the same on a Mac).

Not sure why it's happened, but you could try resetting the password. These instructions work for Lion & Mountain Lion. If you're on Snow Leopard you'll need to use the install disk that came with the Mac.

I called Apple Support and they walked me through it. They told me to basically copy and paste my music to the external hard drive. (I think.) Or maybe it was they had me transfer a folder to the EHD. I don't exactally remember it was a few years back. But I tried to plug in the EHD before starting and...nothing. Still says same thing, "locate file."

    Which iBook do you have?

Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

  • HT3275 I have attached an external hard drive via usb to back up my OSX Snow Leopard.  When I open Time Machine and click set up time machine, I then click Select Disk but there is nothing to select. No information is in the box. I do have Airport Extreme

Not sure how this all works but my problem is this:  I have attached an external hard drive to my mac snow leopard 10.6 and am trying to back up my computer through Time Machine.  When asked to select the drive as part of the set up, there is nothing to select.  The box is empty. How do I set up Time Machine for back ups with an external drive? Hello,
Problem is likely the Format of the External drive, for TM it needs to be Mac OSX extended Journaled & GUID Partition scheme for Intel based Macs...
    How to format your disks...

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

There are other free options for backing up if interested!
