Have the clamshell mode requirements been relaxed?

I'm experiencing what I consider to be some odd behaviour regarding an external display hooked up to my MacBook:
With the external display being the only peripheral connected, the MacBook will enter clamshell mode when I close the lid.
It was my understanding (supported by documentation) that clamshell mode required output and input (a display and a keyboard and mouse; be they wired or bluetooth).
How can it make sense for a laptop to enter clamshell mode with only an external display connected?
When I close the lid with the external display connected:
the external display becomes the main display
all the windows that were open on the lid display pop across to the external
my desktop spread, littered with icons, appears on the external
the MacBook does not enter sleep
I don't have a bluetooth keyboard or mouse connected; I don't even have bluetooth on.
To the best of my knowledge I'm unaware of any settings that would affect this behaviour.
Does anyone else experience this same behaviour?
Have the clamshell mode entry requirements been relaxed in Mavericks (admittedly, I haven't used clamshell mode in previous versions)?
Is this a feature or a bug?

Reading comprehension is not your strong suit. Those notes are not under the heading "Opening the internal display while in closed clamshell mode."
Here, I've copied more for you. Opening the internal display is discussed much later in the article......MUCH later.
Requirements for closed display mode:
Power adapter
External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
External display
Use these steps to enable closed clamshell (display closed) mode:
If you are using a wired keyboard and mouse:
Make sure the computer is plugged in to an outlet using the AC power adapter.
Connect a USB keyboard and mouse to your computer.
With the computer turned on connect the Mac notebook (using the appropriate Apple adapter if necessary) to the appropriate port on the external display or projector and turn the display or projector on.
After your computer's Desktop appears on the external display, close the computer's lid.
When you close the lid:
In OS X Lion and later, the external display will change to a blue screen, then will show your desktop.
In Mac OS X v10.6.8 and earlier, wake the computer up by clicking the mouse button or by pressing a key on your external keyboard.
You should now be able to use your Mac notebook as you normally would, with a USB keyboard and mouse.
If you are using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse on a Bluetooth enabled Mac notebook:
Make sure the computer is plugged in to an outlet using the AC power adapter.
Verify that Bluetooth is turned on by using the Bluetooth pane of System Preferences or the Bluetooth menu icon.
Pair your Bluetooth keyboard or mouse with the computer. For step-by-step instructions, see this article for keyboard pairing or see this article for mouse pairing.
In System Preferences, be sure that the Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer option is selected.

The latest versions of InDesign will not run on XP.  Here is a link to a page that lists the system requirements for most versions of InDesign.  As you will see CS6 will run on XP and is still being sold if you would like to try that out.

  • Error:This page contains content of "application/x-java-applet" type. You do not have the plug-in required to view this content.

Hi....i m using Mac OS x 10.5.8 with safari Version 5.0.2 (5533.18.5). I just updated the Java version to Java 6 and now m getting below error:
This page contains content of “application/x-java-applet” type. You do not have the plug-in required to view this content.
Please help me out on this....

I am also having a problem with this. My website is hosted through "www.onlinepictureproof.com" and now that my laptop is back from repair with OS X 10.6.8 I am unable to upload my photos to my work website. It says "a plug-in is needed to display this content. Install plug-in" and then a window pops up that says "no suitable plug-ins were found".  Below that is "unknown plug-in (application/x-java-applet)" with a link to "manual install" which takes me to "http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index-jsp-141438.html#download" which just leaves me lost. I've tried downloading the "JRE" but I have zero idea what that means or if Im downloading the proper thing. Once I click on the "download JRE" it brings me to a download page where there are WAY too many items for me to choose from to download, when I have no idea what I need or why I need it. please help, this is driving me insane. I actually preferred my constantly crashing laptop to the state its in now, "like brand new" back from apple repair...I have already updated everything that is promted through "Software Updates".
"OnlinePictureProof.com" only directs me to apple support.
Thank you for any help you can offer!

  • Use PS to convert .doc to .docx and not have the compatibility mode issue

Awesome I will bookmark that site. Thank you!

I am looking for a power shell script to convert .doc file to .docx in word 2013 and also make the compatibility mode go away. So the user only has to open it and has no issues with compatibility.  I have found a couple but still have the compatibility mode when opening.

  • How do I copy a layer but have the blending mode reset to normal?

I'm going to try and word this as best as I possibly can lol. I edited a layer with a blending mode and want to copy the layer but have the layer's blending mode go back to normal so that I can edit it again with a different blending mode.
Does anyone know how I could achieve this? Any help would be much appreciated!

Here's the best way: make an action!: Open up your actions panel and create a new action- assign it to a key (f2)>> Make sure your layer is on any blending mode.>>Create a copy of the layer>> change blending mode to normal>> hit stop on action.
Now you have your own action that will always copy whatever layer is selected and change the blending mode to normal!

  • Unable to use CS6 that i bought. Do not have the individual Photoshop required?

I am unable to use Photoshop CS6 that i bought. It is asking me for serial numbers of CS3. CS4, etc. Is there a way that it will allow me to enter the serial numbersof the Creative Suite?
I only have the Creative suites CS5 and CS4 therefore, I cannot use this product. Please reimburse the amount of US $ 199.00.
    thank you

But doesn't the Application manager test to see what your position is in this respect?  Not so likely, of course, when it comes to earlier versions.  I've always wondered why so many people are anal about having their Adobe software on a DVD, or insist on ordering it through a reseller.  I guess I could lay my hands on the disks from old versions of Photoshop, but you just never know when your wife is going to tidy your stuff up lose all your computer stuff.  It is so much better ordering online, and having that history available, along with the downloads and license numbers if you should ever need them years later.
With apologies to the OP, who may not have English as a first language, I wonder if anyone else was reminded of  the on-going  Morecame and Wise sketch about Ernie Wise’s aspirations as a playwright?  Them were the days

  • Why do all the versions after 3.16.3 not have the safe mode, it is required because they crash continually

All the later versions of Firefox crash regularly, this is annoying. We can't update because there isn't a "Safe Mode" option to prevent this happening, or is there ? We are still using version 3.6.13 in safe mode to prevent the annoyance.
PS Explorer doesn't crash all the time like this. You are obviously aware of the crashes because of the sarcastic notices that pop up apologising for ther incovenience.
    Kestrel1

-> Close Firefox (click '''Firefox''' button and click '''Exit''' OR File Menu -> Exit)
-> Start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down SHIFT key while starting Firefox
    * As an alternative method, use '''Win + R''' key combination and enter one of the following in the Windows Run box:
    ** firefox -safe-mode
    ** "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
    ** "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
-> Firefox Safe Mode window will appear -> DON'T SELECT ANY OPTIONS, just click '''Continue in Safe Mode'''
Check and tell if its working.

  • Have the IP profile threshholds been changed?

Always used to be a case that the IP profile for your line (on 21cn) used to be a whole number. E.G 13meg, 14meg, 15meg etc Very annoying if you were at the top of a threshold where an extra 2kb would take you upto the next IP profile.
E.G, before the resync (last done a month ago when SNR was low) was 16,995, silly when you think an extra 30kb sync would have given me an extra 1meg max throughout:
    14752 kbps 15903 kbps  13 Mbps
    15904 kbps 17023 kbps  14 Mbps
    17024 kbps 18175 kbps  15 Mbps
    18176 kbps 19295 kbps  16 Mbps
I resynced today to get a sync of 17,555 and instead of been given an IP profile of 15000, have been given 15,461!
Have finally realised the old system seemed unfair?!

Bt speedtester is not a problem...
My post does not mention that my throughput has exceeded the IP profile...
Even if the 15.5meg Ip profile is displayed incorrectly on speedtester, the increase can still be verified by several other speedtester websites.
Since the Ip profile increase, throughput speed has gone from 14.62 to 15.07
Download speeds from 1.8 to approx 1.9 meg/sec.
So the original question is still unanswered...
Have BT changed the IP profile thresholds from being 1meg apart to 500k
Here is a screeny, im sure you will agree that the speed increase would compliment the 500k profile increase...

  • Anyone around here with an apple developer program membership who lives in the us and wants to participate in entering the atari  indie developer challenge for pong? I have the great idea required, ample coding skills and a completed game design document.

If you have a membership with the apple developer community or know anyone who has and also resides within the united states, please contact.
The purpose is to partake in http://www.atari.com/pongdeveloperchallenge
The initial game design document is fully completed and the ideas expressed in it are more than strong enough to compete for the top prizes.
I'm well versed in different programming languages (c, scheme, js, assembly, python,...) as well as being a proficient sound designer and musician and a skilled graphics and animation manipulator myself. Assistance with the actual development would appreciated but is not really necessary.
Winnings and proceedings arising from participation would distributed most fairly. If you know anyone besides yourself that is able to help out, you would also be rewarded financially from an ensuing victory.

  • I ge this message: "A recommended security and stability update is available, but you do not have the system permissions required to install it." How do I solve this roblem?

I have an Apple OSX10.6.5. I am having difficulty with the Scottrade website and am wondering if my inability to install the above update is part of the problem.

Maybe it is better to wait with updating.

  • "Clamshell Mode" gone with 10.6.6? Or not?

Can people confirm if "clamshell mode" (using a laptop with closed lid; power, keyboard/mouse and monitor attached) still works in 10.6.6? I have seen reports that this (for me pretty important functionality) has been lost with the 10.6.6 update.

I just received my MBP 15" Core i7, bought the Henge Dock docking station and all related gear including an apple Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad and ended up also frustrated because the clamshell mode is not working... once I disconnect the laptop from the power to put in the dock, the laptop never wakes up again wither with keyuboard keystroke or magic trackpad activity... please let me know if there is any worksoround for this problem. Thanks.

  • Clamshell mode slow internet... am adding a video proof about it...

For the past few months I have been constatnly calling up my ISP to check if there is something wrong with their service. My internet speed is slow. Some times as slow as 5% the promised speed. I'm on a 10 mbps plan which should give me a cool 1.2 mBps (notice the capital B). whenever i feel there needs to be a test, i simple make a download off itunes podcast. Before i started using it in the clamshell mode it used to give me a full 1.2mBps!! Then, it began to fluctuate to abour 200 to 400 kBps. on non apple sites, even as low as 100kBps!!
i even changed my router and was about the buy a third one! but then, the ISP engineers made me plug in the mac direcrly to the ethernet port, and everything ran fine! so it was ruled out that there was anything wrong with the service. also, since two of my routers from differend manufactureres showed the same performance, the problem with the router was also ruled out. then i booted my old toshiba machine running vista and it ran fine too.
While searching for a comparision for the macbook pro in clamshell and an iMac, i came across this thread...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2175385?start=0&tstart=0
so i decided to run a test with podcasts again and check the speed. this time i leveraged on qt x's screen recording ability and decided to post here. it turned out to be true! the clamshell mode is causing problems with the internet speed. check this video out yourself...

  • 10.5.3: Clamshell mode and 1080p display issues fixed?

Has the clamshell mode issue and 1080p display issue been fixed in 10.5.3? Are you able to shut your laptop and use 1080p on an external monitor without the **** thing freaking out?

Me and hundreds like had the issue when we upgraded to 10.5.2. It is a known but bug that when you start up the system an external display wouldn't be recognized in calibrated profiles (only at 1440x900). A work around was to start up then close the door immediately or boot up without external display connected and connect when completed booted.
I was told by support in Jan that there would be a fix in the next release (10.5.3 I presumed), but after installing it I have the same problem and the release notes don't mention it as repaired.
