Have the external monitor issues with the rMBP been resolved?

I am looking to buy a new external monmitor and do not want to spend the $1000 for the Apple TB display. I was looking at the Viewsonic 27"IPS panel. It had gotten good reviews, but all over the internet, and right here in this forum the problems are well documented. The retina MBP does play nice with external monitors. Apple guys at my nearest store in Albany tell me they have heard of no problems whatsoever, I didnt have time to show them all the complaints. So now I am stuck. Anywords of wisdom?

I think the problem with the screen is just a loose connection for the light source because the computer works fine otherwise. The repair people in town say that it's a bad logic board which will cost 700 euros to fix so I've been using it closed with the monitor and a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. I installed 10.9.2 the other day because I had been using 10.6.8 and there was some software I wanted to use but it needed 10.7 or later. I just assumed 10.9 was safe or better than 10.7 or 10.8 and I didn't do any research or even try to buy or DL them because the links on the apple site led me to 10.9 and I just blindly followed. So NOW when I open the lid to my macbook pro, the menu at the top of the monitor goes gray and the monitor flicks off for a second, and when it comes back all the running applications have vanished from the desktop, (all the open windows) and I can't type, scroll, mouse. When I close the lid it works ok, but I really like the isight camera and I think the microphone is better than the one on my external camera, so it was nice to still be able to use them.
I chatted with someone at apple for a while and he told me to erase my HD and install it again. He said the problems were because I installed it on top of an old OS and that a fresh install will fix all the problems. I have an empty partition on my mbp and I'm about to try to install on that drive and see if it makes a difference, but I don't totally trust that guy. I read the transcript of the chat and he gave me a lot of conflicting info. Does anyone know if it makes a difference to install os 10.9.2 on a totally blank drive, or will the problems on the other partition corrupt everything else?

You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up.

You may want to download/update: Monitor file for Windows 7 (Thinkpad)
The reason I say that is because the readme it states, "If you use the preload environment, you do not need this package. This package is required when you install Windows OS without the preload image."
Since you setup the Thinkpad with Windows 7 Pro CD and no longer have the preload image, this may fix the problem.
Also, have you checked the website for the displayport manufacturer? They may have updated drivers there that wouldn't have been on the update tool you used.

Duel Monitor issue with video in full screen mode

Hi, im not sure if this is the right forum but here is my question
I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro 13" model...i want to be able to have a video in full screen on my external monitor but still use my laptop to do work and browse the web
However, ever time i put it in full screen mode it blackens my laptop screen

What do you mean by the adaptor - i have what ever software etc that came with the mac...and then from apple i bought the mini display port to VGA adaptor...the monitor is a new LG W2261 Full HD...currently i am connect via the blue VGA cable

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:

If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

Otherwise you'll need a TB to Whatever The Input of The Monitor Is adapter. Could be DVI or HDMI.

I would recommend that you read the Rules of Engagement and other documents in the Getting Started link (top right) before posting anymore. Your Discussion will most likely get reported as non-specific and get removed. If you have a specific problem with TM, please post it in a new thread with error messages, version and SPs installed, and how the error occurs and what you are trying to get TM to do.
There are a lot of resources available in the TM Overview page which can help, so start there and maybe also look at some of the MKS (Monday Knowledge Session) recordings which should also be listed. There are also a lot of experienced people who can help resolve issues your TM installation, but you need to provide enough information on the problems you are having. If you are just looking for information on past problems, do a Search or simply browse through past Discussions which are marked with a green Check (Correct Answer).

i have an apple 24 inch external monitor attached to a 27 inch imac. the main screen dims according to the energy saver settings but the external monitor stays bright. there seem to be no settings in the energy saver pane in system settings to control the dim function, any suggestions?
