Have thumbnails, iPhoto lost many original files!

This is the second time iPhoto has killed me, this time loosing some very valuable photos!  I am using iPhoto 9.5 on Mavericks.  I recently discovered lost pictures in an event from 6 months ago.  It has the thumbnails so it looks fine on the surface but when I click on a picture and tried to look full screen at the photo (when it loads the original) I got a black triangle exclamation point error.  This happens for all but 3 photos (out of about 200 original).  I looked at a few other events in the same time frame and found another one missing about half of it's pictures.  Haven't gone through the whole database to find out what else might be lost at this point.  I looked in timemachine but it only goes back to November when I upgraded to Mavericks.  It shows info that I have older dates but I can't access them, I guess Mavericks doesn't like Snow Leopard.
I then made a copy of my iPhoto library "just in case" so that if my next steps are disastrous I might have hope.  I tried Command-Option starting iPhoto and tried Repair permissions, repair database and rebuild database.  I didn't try rebuild thumbnails since I'm worried iPhoto will get rid of any thumbnails it can't find an original file connect to which means I'll lose even the thumbs.
Two questions:
Where does iPhoto save thumbnails?  Any sort of order that means anything to humans?  Is this going to be even remotely easy to sort so that I can have even a low-res copy of my pictures for memories??
Do I have any other options to try to fix iPhoto?  It did this about a year ago as well (with an earlier version of iPhoto which prompted an upgrade) so I am rapidly losing faith in this program for something as important to me as photographs.
Thanks

1 - since you have a copy of your iPhoto library you are safe
2 - rebuilding thumbnails is safe - expecially since you have a backup
3 - by your thumbnails (and by default your priginals and your previews are stored in the iPhoto library in standard finder folders - you do not access them that way but they are there
4 - download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use its rebuild to create a totally new library leaving the existing one unchanged if you need it for the future

  • Iphoto lost my original files

    I have several folders in iPhoto, the one in question, I have opened several times, and have edited some photos. For reason unknown, I tried to open, and enlarge a photo to full screen image to view it, and I suddenly could not. I got a warning that iPhoto could not locate the original file. I neither deleted or anything else with these files other than some editing, they are recent pics.I can still share the pics in iPhoto, but can no longer open the files to full image to view. My concern is that iPhoto lost my originals, and it could happen to my other folders. I did backup my photos, but when I redownload to iPhoto, I get the same warning of "original files lost"? What can I do to fing the originals on my MAC book, and how to prevent in the future?

    Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
    A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
    A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • How do I revert my iPhoto to the Original File?

    I have Mac OS X - Version 10.5.8 - iPhoto 9
    I have a numerious amount of photo's that look fine in thumbnail but when opened I am given a "!".  I have done the suggested Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.  This did not work!  But if I right-click iPhoto Library, click Show Package Contents I see there are files such as Originals, Modified, Library.iPhone, Library6.iPhoto, and Before Restore.  Ok I compared the specific "!" photos.  Example IMG_0057 comes up "!" in iPhoto.  In the Original folder IMG_0057 is there and perfect, but in Modified IMG_0057 does not exist nor do the other photos that were showing "!".
    SO I thought to just restore all pictures to the pictures in the Original Folder.  Can this be done?  How do I do this? Will this restore the photos back to that have "!" without loosing them all?  Please share with me what I can do?!?!?!?

    No it was never used on iphone or ipad.  but I am sure the iphoto at some point was updated.  Diane I did looking using iphoto Library manager but the version of Mac I have I believe is too old.  That's why I am asking here because all other suggestions I have found seem to be wrong.  I have backed up my photos but it was later after all this started occuring.  Thats why I want to go back to the images in the original file......
    Any other thoughts PLEASE?!?!?
    PS I have no idea why this signed me in as a different user?!

  • EXS24 has lost many audio files

    I downloaded Logic from the App store.  There are many many patches in the EXS24 instrument that have lost their audio files. How can I get ALL these audio files back so ALL patches work.

    This is happening to me too.  I have re-installed, I have re-indexed, and have gone through all the files manually and added .aif to all the files without an extention (this helped with a lot of sounds), and still, 2 of the drum kits work and none of the others.  Very frustrating.

  • Relocating Many original files at once

    Hello,
    I am using itunes v 6 and with all of my music locates in the same itunes music folder on an external hard drive.
    Since installing the latest version of itunes, I have received the following error code; "original file could not be found, would you like to locate it?"
    When I go through the songs with the exclamation point error message one by one and correct this by finding the original file, everything works with no problem.
    Is there any way to automate the process and just tell itunes to check the music library automatically for the missing files (clicking for each of over 1,000 files individually is a huge waste of time)? I don't want to delete my library and reimport all the music because I don't want to lose my playlists.
    Thanks!

    BEFORE you do this: are there little exclamation poionts next to your music?
    Something you could do (if there are little exclamatio points next to your songs yu can feel safer about this) )would be to, in iTunes, 1. Select al of your music and delete it (don't say yes to delete real files). 2. Go to File-"Add to Library..." and select your Music Folder. This will delete the bad files and add in the good ones.

  • My pc was reformatted and i lost my original files in the itunes. i downloaded a new itunes into my pc but i couldnt sync or upload anymore my iphone files to the library. my question is how i can sync my phone to the newly reformatted pc?

    Hi, anybody who can help me in sync my iphone to a newly reformatted pc?  Whenever I tried to sync and upload my iphone files to the library a message comes out that the iphone is connected to another pc.  In other words, I couldnt back up my iphone to the newly reformatted pc.  I lost all the previous library contents after the pc was reformatted.  My problem now is how to set up my iphone with the new reformatted pc.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.  Unfortunately, my itunes library wasn't backed up before the reformatting.  hence, I lost the itunes library.  I downloaded a new itunes to the newly reformatted pc and did follow your suggestion to transfer purchases from the phone.  However, when i made some imported content from cd into the itunes library, it couldn't be sync to the iphone.  How do you transfer  new content from itunes library to the iphone?  I wasn't successful in moving the content from the playlist to the iphone anymore.

  • I have 100 plus songs in my itunes library that have lost original files but they are on my ipod can i transfer them back in to itunes library

    I have 100 plus songs in my itunes library (downloaded from store and cd's) that have lost the original file on my computer. They are still playing on my ipod. Is there a way I can transfer the songs fromn the ipod back into the library to restore the files?

    I have tried everything I have read on the Internet about sync issues and restore etc and not there isn't a single song on my iPad or iPod touch. All of the songs are listed in my iTunes but are all greyed out, some have the cloud symbol next to them but lots don't and some say waiting.
    Long and short is nothing will save to my devices at all.....HELP !!!!!!!?

  • Original file gone, but iPhoto still shows preview

    I have lost the original files but can still see previews when I look in the Last 12 Months import tab. I've tried to drag one to the desktop but I get an error that says, "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." I have upgraded from iLife 06 before losing the original files. Is there a way to get these back?

    It sounds like a corrupt library
    If you do not have a current backup of the library6.iphoto file to restore then Rebuild your library - quit iPhoto, backup your iphoto library and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) and command (apple) keys and rebuild
    if that does not work download iPhoto library manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and use its rebuild function
    If that does not work you will need to create a new library - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the desktop (it's default location is in your pictures folder), launch iPhoto and create a new library, make sure the preference to split items imported from the finder is unchecked, and open the iPhoto library on your desktop and open the originals folder - drag each folder in the originals folder onto the iPhoto icon in the dock - this will retain your events without edits, keywords and projects

  • "original file could not be found" help needed please

    Hello and help...please
    i have a new laptop, so i saved my itunes music library to an external drive to transfer it to the new machine. I uploaded to itunes with the simple 'add folder' option and all my songs appeared in itunes everything is great i thought.
    However, every single song i click on to play comes up with
    "the song "insert title here" could not be used because the original file could not be found. would you like to locate it?"
    I have searched long and hard through the itunes help etc and found nothing.
    can anyone help me? please?
    many thanks for taking the time
    phill

    for windows version, you have to check the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" in preference pane. then every time you add songs to your library iTunes will copy the original files to your iTunes library folder so you don't have to worry about the original files missing or moved.

  • Original file reversion issue

    Hi, I notice on certain images (but not others), that the "revert to original" stays solid for a given file even after I've clicked on it, and that the program keeps allowing me to revert the same file -- which is counter intuitive. Surely once you've reverted, the option to revert should be grayed out? So, also, I'm not sure wether some of these files ARE the original or not -- is it reverting or not? Is this a common problem?

    Welcome to the Apple DIscussions.
    Would these photos have been taken with a camera that has an auto-rotate feature? If so what's happening is that iPhoto is reading the auto-rotate flag on the pic as a modification, and so creating a modified copy. If you 'Revert to Original' on one of these pics, iPhoto reads the Original file and off we go again... It's a facility that iPhoto doesn't handle particularly gracefully.
    Work-Arounds? Turn of the auto-rotate feature on the camera, and rotate the pics in iPhoto
    or
    Rotate the pics in another app before importing them into iPhoto.
    However, if these pics aren't created by the auto-rotate issue, then can you give any more details on the pics.

  • TS1424 The movie/tv show "..." could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?

    This is the message that comes up when I try to watch a movie or tv show that I PURCHASED.  Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what did you do?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    This occurs when you have moved or deleted the original file from its original location.
    Try deleting the problematic file (electing to remove original file if/when prompted) and then re-downloading the file from the iTunes store.
    You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.
    You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option at the bottom of the screen of the iTunes app (or video app) on your iOS device.
    If the problem re-occurs, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History using your computer.

  • IDCS6 MACOSX JS: Data Merging many txt files one after another

    Hello everybody.
    I have a situation where I have to data-merge many text files to the one actual indesign "base" file. The formats of the databases are all the same, the point of difference is a code in the second field of the database that refers to a mailing zone (not a zip/postcode, a "distribution centre" code that has 56 or so possibilities). I would prefer to data merge one file and then somehow split the resulting PDF via Acrobat, but the length of the resulting mailing zones is inconsistent and something that can't be done though the "split document" feature in acrobat.
    The database starts out as one massive file but using a one-line  code, can be split into its mailing zones into separate text files.
    My ultimate question: is there any way to data merge more than one file at once (e.g. one after another) and give them their names based on the names of the input text file?
    Ole Kvern had a script to Data Merge one file without the UI. I have altered the last line slightly so that it outputs to a PDF based on [High Quality Setting]:
    if(app.documents.length != 0){
            var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
            app.dataMergeOptions.removeBlankLines = true;
            //Select a source file.
            var myDataFile = File.openDialog("Select a data file")
            var exported = "file location(redacted for the sake of this post)"
            if(myDataFile != ""){
                    myDocument.dataMergeProperties.selectDataSource(myDataFile,);
                    myDocument.dataMergeProperties.exportFile(exported,"[High Quality Print]",);
    I figure the answer has to do with the variable "myDataFile" and rather than being simply open a dialog, it would be somehow selecting an array of text files, but this is where I am out of my depth.
    Any insights or other thoughts that may not involve trying to do many merges at once but may somehow revolve around one large merged PDF?
    Many thanks
    Colin

    I've answered my own question, but the answer lies outside of Adobe InDesign – it uses bookmarks within Adobe Acrobat.
    1) Data Merge the art/data to one large PDF file.
    2) In the resulting PDF file, manually search out the mailing zones and apply bookmarks to each first instance only of each mailing zone. In this case, it is a manual process of find/replace to find one of 70 possible mailing zones that may be used in any database. Each bookmark should be named with its respective code. It is a manual process, but it would take 5 minutes so this is acceptable.
    3) Using "Split Document" from the pages panel, make sure the "top level bookmarks" radio button is checked, and in the Output Options make sure that the "Use bookmark names for files" radio button is checked.
    I'm aware that this was a rather obscure question that only a fraction of users on this forum may wish to know an answer for, but hopefully this workaround helps someone else in a similar situation.
