Have to restart twice on cold boot...soft reboots just fine though --

Hi I built this NEO system and  I was coming from a 266Mhz Dell so it's really a great time.  However I am having a problem with starting from a complete shutdown.  Reboots are no problem but when I try to start the computer up from being turned off it always freezes up after POST the first time, and then boots just fine the second time.
Everytime I turn the computer off through start>shutdown>turn off - the computer shuts down and then when I start it back up it checks memory -which i escape out of - goes through POST and then freezes up after recognizing the HDD and CDROM.  I've waited a while and it just stays frozen.  So then I turn it off again, turn it back on, and the second time it always posts and boots up just fine.
Also, if I just do a soft reboot from within windows it always reboots just fine.
Anybody know what setting I could be missing?  I have noticed that if I set PAT to turbo in BIOS CUP-Z says it is enabled in windows.  However if I shutdown and go through the "2 restarts" thing CPU-Z says it is no longer enabled.  So it does not matter what PAT is set to something is reverting on it’s own after a cold start.
It seems like some basic setting gets changed or reverts in the bios upon a full cold shutdown, whereas it doesn't with just a soft reboot.  I don't list a case because I just have it set up on an ESD mat and use anything metal to turn it on by bridging the correct contacts.
I'm not overclocking and have the memory set to set itself.  I think the voltages are all just set to default.

Wow.  Thanks for quick reply.
I set DDR Voltage to 2.7 in bios, loaded windows, shutdown.  Started computer and it still hung after memory test and POST.  So I held in the power button 4 seconds and shutdown.  Started again and POST and booted into windows just fine.  So it still seems to need "2 restarts" even with the DDR voltage change to 2.7!?

  • X301 Cold boot always reboots?

    Hi,
Every time I cold boot my laptop it runs through POST, then reboots and POSTs again, then starts the OS.
It's a minor issue, but rather anoying, i.e. with fingerprint reading as you need to swipe twice.
This problem only occurs from a cold boot. When restarting the laptop this issue doesn't appear.
    Anyone else have this problem?
    thanks.

And yet another bump. Lenovo, can you please tell me what to do about this? This is the THIRD box already with various issues. Love the form factor but would like to have a completely working one...

  • Three 3 Beeps after long resume, boots into OSX just fine. RAM Issue?

    Hi everyone,
After about a year or so of experimenting with Hackintoshs with the OSX86 community (MSi Wind and Dell E1405) and an enjoyable experience with my iPhone, I've decided to pick up my first Mac. I ended up with the newer Macbook 2.4ghz. As a veterened PC user who had no problems with Windows, I find OSX to be very user friendly, so this computer has been very enjoyable indeed.
I went ahead and upgraded it to a 500GB HDD and 4GB of DDR3 RAM as soon as I got it, and by this, I mean, I booted it up to ensure it worked, then shut it down, and added the new parts.
I don't remember if this happened on the first bootup when OEM spec, but now, whenever the computer has been asleep for a long time (after I get up in the morning, or when I get back from work), I hear three or so short beeps right before the DVD scanning for a disc. I believe this also happens if the computer has been turned off a while. If I restart or shutdown for a "short period" it does not happen.
I did some research online, and most people say the RAM has a problem, but they all never boot or have major issues.
My MacBook boots, detects the proper amount of System Memory in "About this Mac", and looks to be just fine in System Profiler. I also ran the Apple Hardware Test, and it passed without issue. The MacBook has no functionality issues that most people contribute to bad memory (reboots, funny screens). Basically, if it didn't beep 3 times, I wouldn't have thought anything could be wrong. The only other issue I have is that it doesn't turn on the laptop's display when resuming from sleep (which is very annoying), something others are reporting as well.
The DDR3 I got is OCZ Brand. A silly name, but reputable brand. It looks to use the same brand Micron chips as the OEM Apple. A link to the Memory I purchased is here - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CNR39U
Does anyone have any insight into what could be causing the MacBook to beep 3 times whenever I boot up after a long time of sleep/off?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Sounds like faulty RAM. Get 'em replaced. I tend to trust Kingston and/or Patriot for my memory needs.
If that doesn't work, then try popping in the stock RAM. If those work, then we know the RAM you replaced is still faulty. Keep retrying. If the stock RAM still beeps, send the machine in for repairs.
Btw, a running joke between my friends, we call OCZ ... OverClockZors =P.

    please help me!

    - Have you tried resetting the iPod.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then connect to computer and if it shows in iTunes restore.
    - If screen is still on, let the battery fully drain. Then charge for an hour and try the reset and retore again.

  • IDVD quits unexpectedly during menu rendering. I have burned a similar project before and it worked just fine. Suggestions?

I have iDVD for iLife'11. Every time I try to burn my current project, iDVD unexpectedly quits around the same time during the rendering menus process. My macbook pro is practically brand new, and I have succesfully burned a very similar (and larger) project before with no problems. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

    Hi
    My first thoughts
    • free space on start-up (Mac OS) hard disk - less than 25Gb (not probably on a new Mac Book Pro)
    • corrupted iDVD Pref file - trash it and re-start iDVD. (Or even better - start a new User Account and log into this and re-try - this forces Your Mac to do lot's of new error free pref files.
    • corrupted project - Start a brand new one - Don't use old problematic one
    • jumping from iDVD back to movie editor - results in iDVD BUG. Start a new iDVD project - or trash movie in iDVD and clean Media Assetts. Then re-try.
    Yours speculating. Bengt W

  • HT204135 This is my first iMac. How come everything I print is in black and white? I have an HP Photosmart and it prints in color just fine except when I print using the iMac.

Unlike my other computers where I can change the printer setup ( color, black and white, paper type etc) I don't see that option on the iMac.  Is it called somethng else? I want to retire my old computer but can't until I can print in color.

Thank you, I did that, after I click "show details" I see where I can change the paper size, reverse print etc. but I'm not seeing an option to swtich to color. On my HP and IBM PC's I can click on printer properties and change the print quality, paper type ( e.g.photo), grayscale and such. Do you by chance know if this is not an available feature on iMacs or maybe my printer isn't iMac friendly?

  • MSI G33M-FI and MSI 9600GT OC cold boot problem

So I just recently put together my new computer (MSI G33M-FI motherboard) and whenever I shut it down and turn it on the computer will turn off in about 3 seconds (you won't see the bios screen) and then it just turns on and off endlessly/ in a loop.
Fix is to clear CMOS and it will boot ok but whenever I turn it off (no restart..) the problem is back!, only clear CMOS helps...
Good thing I found the problem, the videocard (MSI 9600GT OC). When I switch it with my poorly ATI 1950pro I have no problem with a cold boot.
Using the latest bios version with the motherboard (on the MSI site). Havent flashed my 9600GT 512mb (red double slot cooler version) with a another bios yet though.. (if there is 1, just checked- no new bios).
Anyone got an idea how to fix this? I don't think so but maybe they should make a new bios to fix this?
Other parts from computer: Patriot extreme 4 gig (2x2) ddr2 performance (4-4-4-12, 2.2 volt) and an intel e8400 cpu.
Anyone else having this problem? Thanks...

I had cold-boot problems with my G33M-FI.  Tried E2140 and Q6600 CPUs at stock voltages/clocks, tried two different sets of DDR2-800 RAM (4x1GB and 4x2GB), tried different CMOS batteries and tried two different power supplies (Thermaltake and Coolermaster 500W supplies).  Regardless of combination of components, system would frequently fail to POST.  Problems were experienced with integrated video (no add-on cards installed) and with/without any drives connected.  Problems were also experienced with a single good stick of RAM in slot 1 vs. all four slots populated.  Once booted, the system performed flawlessly passing memtest86+ and other reliability/stability tests.  Once the system failed to boot, it would almost never boot again until I cleared the BIOS (sometimes requiring me to remove and reinsert the CMOS battery, since the jumper alone didn't cure the problem).  Trial and error of different hardware combinations in an attempt to isolate the problem with a CMOS clear/recovery between attempts proved to be a very painful and tedious process.  After speaking with MSI tech support, solution was to RMA the board.

    Hello all,
I have this weird issue with cold booting while overclocking. I've tried very hard to diagnose the problem but have been unable to find the culprit.
So I'm using an i5-2500k with the mobo in the subject. I have flashed the BIOS to the latest (2.4). So everytime I try to overclock by using a different multi (it can be as subtle has x34) the system will fail the overclock while cold booting. What I mean by that is if I do the overclock from the bios then save&reboot it will load in windows and be totally stable under IBT. I can achieve any kind of overclock up to 4.7 Ghz and it will be totally stable.
BUT, as soon as I do a shutdown of the system, upon booting (cold boot), the computer will try to boot but fail at it. I'll be prompted by the bios to reload default.
I've tried various combinaisons to no avail. I even tried to underclock the processor to sub x33. I don't understand what could be wrong. It seems as soon as I switch to anything else then auto on the ratio, it won't boot from shutdown. Weird.
Thanks in advance for your inputs.

  • P67A G65 - No boot on Cold Boot

Every morning I turn on the PC, or during any cold boot, it would just not boot into Windows. It would POST and then just stop with a blinking cursor.
I would have to shut down the PC via the power switch from the PSU, unplug the power cord, plug it back in, and it booted like normal.
Why is this happening? Please help thanks. My board is OC with CPU only, RAM and everything else is set on AUTO.

Having similar cold boot problem after overclocking over 4.4GHz... after POST, instead of Win7 booting, I just get a blinking cursor in upper left corner...
If booting at 4.4GHz and overclocking from within Win7 (just changing the multi to 46x using ControlCenterII, not touching any other setting), no problem working at 4.6GHz (Linx/Prime stable for hours, temps <70C full load). If setting the multi for 46x in BIOS, no boot after POST. EUP2013 disabled already. Seems like a BIOS bug to me?

    # Windows 7 64Bit
    # Corsair HX750
make sure you have XMP disabled. Everything should be set to AUTO except for CPU VCORE and CPU PLL to 1.9.
CPU PLL Overvoltage should be enabled. Leave DRAM and anything that is RAM related to AUTO, don't manually set your ram speed.
Also, enable Allow Windows to set CPU ratio. Let me know how it goes.

  • Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible. Get this every time my browser sits for 10 minutes and I have to restart

I asked this question before and performance is somewhat better but still at least three times a day I have to restart my computer just to get FF to run. It starts fine first time. If I let my computer go to Screen Saver, when I get back, pages will not load. When I close FF I get a message that FF is still running. When I chose Close FF I get the message in the question. Every single day. I like FF but will switch to Chrome if I have to restart my computer three times a day just to use FF. Very frustrating.

Tried all that. Totally uninstalled FF. Reinstalled fresh copy. Had to get my bookmarks, add ons, etc. loaded back on. Was very hopeful. Twenty minutes after walking away from my computer the same damn thing happened for the umpteenth time. Nothing would load. When I closed FF and tried to restart I get a message that FF is already running. Close button and Task Manager were of no help. Then get the "profile inaccessible" error message. I give up. While I like the FF interface, I need a browser that doesn't force me to restart my computer every time I'm gone for twenty minutes. Reluctantly going to Chrome. Thanks for your efforts. Maybe someday FF will make a browser that actually works on my computer. Very frustrated user here.
