Have to restore in order to update OS 4.0
When I plugged my iPhone in to sync with iTunes, it must have asked me to update my OS. I wasn't paying too much attention but clicked on some Apple User Agreement. I thought it was just typical Apple wanting me to agree to everything. Then my iTunes was sending all kinds of info to Apple for the Genius app. I thought this took an unusually long time, more than 10 min. After that was done, iTunes won't recognize my iPhone. It now wants me to restore my iPhone. I hope I did not click on an agreement to update my OS to 4.0 because based on what I've read so far, I don't want to update it. But did I start the process to update to OS 4.0? Can I NOT do that now? If I hit restore now, will it automatically update to 4.0? Is there a way to do a backup now before the OS update if that has to happen?
Frustrating, I'm sure.
First, try restarting the phone. Then, see if you can apply the upgrade again from iTunes, and/or try to sync it again.
I found that after this upgrade, it took the phone a long time to adjust. I think that many of the applications need to write out new temp files or settings files in order to function, and it took my phone quite a while to adjust after this. Performance got better and many glitches went away.

Do I have to restore my iPad to update it?
I tried to update my iPad 2 and it was working until it said I needed to connect my iPad to iTunes. So, I plugged it into my computer but iTunes said that my iPad was in recovery mode and in order to connect to iTunes I must restore it. I cannot restore it because I have important work on it and restoring it will wipe a lot of that data because not all of my data was backed up in the cloud. My iPad will not turn on except the message that I need to connect it to iTunes. PLEASE HELP ME!
You can try this to get it out of Recovery Mode:
Unplug the device from the USB cable if it's connected. Then hold down the sleep/wake button until it turns off. Let go of the button and then hold it down again until the Apple logo reappears. Let it go and the device may boot up.
This only works, of course, if your device was working properly previously. Otherwise, or if that doesn't get it back to normal operation, you'll need to to try to restore it:

i have to restore my phone from back up but in order to do it i had to update my software. now that my software is updated there isnt enough room on the phone to back up. is there a way to only restore certain things from the backup like contacts?
Because it says it's incompatible when it can't be, I got hope. I get error messages all the time with my iPod and iPhone that it cannot sync and that 'this device is not capapble of connecting to iTunes' stuff. I literally forget that happened, plug it in again and it works, I later realize that iTunes made a mistake, they do that.

Everytime I update Firmware it errors and I have to restore.
This is getting so **** frustrating. I love my iPhone but I HATE iTunes so much. I go to upgrade firmware and then it errors, then the phone is stuck in recovery mode. So I have to restore and upgrade then reload ALL of my music, apps, and contacts. This takes HOURS!!! And also none of my stuff will be in the right order it was.
What am I doing wrong here? It's not jailbroken or anything goofy like that.I've just gotten so used to it that I make sure to back up my phone before hand, because I know its going to crash and burn. It's just depressing to have to waste about 2-3 hours updating firmware on the darn thing.
This is the only thing I can think of though, when I used to have the old iPhone I had it jailbroken. But when the new iPhone came out there was no need anymore because the app store keeps me happy. I loaded my old profile onto the new phone though. (Contacts, appointments, music) I am wondering id that's the reason its acting weird.
I could start a whole new phone but I would have to write out all my contact info and everything. Seems like a hassle.

I forgot my restriction password and I can't delete any app. I can't download anything either, I've filled up all the space in my iPad, and I need to update my iPad in order to restore it. But my iPad needs space in order to update to a newer vers. of ios.. I've also tried to restore to the previous backup, but it yet doesn't work. Please help :c!
I told you, I can't restore iOS. In order to restore my iPad, I need to update it to iOS 7.0.4, but my iPad needs available space to update, but I don't have any. I can't delete anything at all, so yeah.. are there any possible ways to restore my ipad without updating? If not, please state other ways to solve this problem.

When I tried to update my iPad I got an error 9. Now, I am unable to access my iPad. It is in a continuous cycle when I try to update or restore the iPad 2. Plug in to iTunes 12.0.1 (latest version). Click update, told can't update, have to restore. Restore fails with error 9. Any help appreciated.
Here's the cycle:

Notes: I just upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) in the last week. It’s the first time I’m tried to backup/update my iPad since the iMac update.
I swapped out the USB cable to a new cable and get the same results.
I also unplugged all other USB devices from the iMac and security on my iPad and still get the same results.
I find it strange that it shows no Serial number for my my iPad 2 when plugged in. It shows “Serial Number: n/a on the screen when it displays: “iPad Recovery Mode To update your iPad without erasing its contents, click Update. To restore your iPad to its factory settings, click Restore iPad.
I prefer to update my iPad, but it displays “Your iPad can’t be updated, you must restore it to factory settings. If you previously backed up the iPad, click Restore Backup after the restore process completes.”
It’s a continuous loop. I get the display on my iPad to plug in the iPad to iTunes, plug it in which ends after going through the above procedure saying an error occurred (9).
So now I cannot use my iPad. When I turn it on I get the display showing me to plug it into iTunes with the cable. Since this is the only option I have I plug it in and the loop begins.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Check your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.

I have just updated my Ipad mini the latest version (so I am told) but it has stopped my I pad from working and it says that I have to restore it back to factory settings etc. and will lose my data as I dont know whether I have fully back up my photos which I dont wont to lose what do I do??????????????????
If it's in recovery mode, the data is already gone. Why did you never back up your important data?

i have an iphone 4 and after updating it to the ios5 software, it will not allow me to activate nor allow me to leave the setup page. i plugged it into itunes and it is stuck there too... i cannot even restore it. does anyone know what to do?
I have had this same issue but thankfully fixed it. Follow he steps below:
Sync your iPhone with you iTunes therefore your info is backed up. Unplug your phone.
Go to Settings > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
Once your phone has reset and come back on answer the question until it asks if you want to back up from itunes Click this then plug your phone in.
After everything has sync'd back to your phone everything should work fine.

I am an Aperture user and I am tired of managing my old iphoto library seperately. In order to use the new combined aperture/iphoto abilities i need a newer version of iphoto. Apple says that the new iphoto is free, however my iphoto (version 8.1.2) did not update. How do i update iphoto so that i can use the library with Aperture?iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband are free. I updated my iphone 5 and now it is telling me to be able to work i had to connect it to itunes and itunes it telling me that i have to restore my iphone. what can i do? i dont want to lose all my pictures and stuff like that.
Something went wrong with the update, this can and does happen with every version of iOS.
There is nothing wrong with the update.
Simply restore the device via iTunes on the computer.
If iTunes is stating it will take hours to update, that indicates an extremely slow Internet connection and is likely the reason the OTA update failed. -

They will be gone from the iphone, but you should be syning all contacts to your computer regularly and should be importing all pics to your computer regularly, particularly before any update.
