Have TrueCrypt volumes show up in Gnome toolbar "Places"

How can I have volumes I mount in via TrueCrypt show up in "Places" in the Gnome's Toolbar?
I am indeed mounting the volume to a folder in /media. I've tried placing an entry for the volume (/dev/mapper/truecrypt0 /media/storage [...]) in fstab, but to nothing.
(I remember that it would show up back in Ubuntu, so I know it's possible somehow.)
I guess a related question, which would be helpful to know if a potential answerer doesn't knows anything about TrueCrypt in specific, would be: how does Gnome decide what to put in the "Places" menu?

For the record, for those who care, Gnome 2.22 seems to have fixed this issue.

    I have a Quicksilver twin 800 mhz and use 4.11.
    My volumes show a question mark(?) on upper right corner.
    What is going on ?

    One other thought: does the question mark go away when you open a folder?
    I am beginning to suspect that maybe just right-clicking the Finder window's toolbar and selecting "Customize Toolbar" and then seeing if you can drag the question mark off the tool bar, like there is some phantom item that the Finder can't resolve.
    A puzzle.  It definitely has something to do with the Finder toolbar, though.  I'm pretty sure of that at this point.
    EDIT:  OK, I recreated the situation.  You can drag an AppleScript to the toolbar so it will always be available.  However, if that AppleScript file goes away, what's left is the dreaded question mark.  The solution is to just drag the question mark off the toolbar while having the "Customize Toolbar" pane open as instructed above.
    Well, I learn something new today, and it's only 52 minutes into the day.  My work here is done.
    Now you see it:
    Now you don't:
    Actually, you can just right-click on the question mark and select "Remove Item" and it should be gone.

  • How can I reformat my hard drive if erase and partition don't work in disk utility and I get an error when I try to erase and install from the Leopard install disk?  I have had several kernel panics, but the volume shows up in startup disk.

    I have had several kernel panics on my iBook G4; the panic message shows up just after the desktop appears. Although the startup volume shows up in Startup Disk, the installation disk reports an error when I attempt an erase and install. Disk utility is unable either to erase or partition the hard drive. The hard drive shows up in disk utility, but the startup volume doesn’t  HELP!!!

    Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?
    Which exact iBook model is it?
    You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
    Erasing the disc and installing Mac OS X 10.5 will result in loss of the other applications (such as the iLife applications) which came pre-installed on the iBook.

    No no, if you read what I said, it would be that each individual display would be customizable to the user. The way you have it, it sounds like your second display will be dedicated to scrolling through fullscreen apps not allowing you to do it on the home screen. This is silly because with my concept, you could do that, by dragging apps to fullscreen in your second display, but if you want you could tell another display to scroll through fullscreen apps (independently) if you wanted. Each display will have it's own mission control with it's own set of desktops. I also can see how some people would still want them linked together, so this could just be a little check box made in mission control prefs to "link" or "unlink" desktops with link checked by default.
    With your solution you're limited to your setup. but what if the person has three or four displays? Well then your solution would limit them to one dedicated display that scrolls through fullscreen apps where mine lets a person customize their desktops depending on their preference and setup.
    further example: if you have safari, address book and mail in one display, you could still have ichat, PS and Illustrator in your second, and a text editor, FTP Client and iTunes in your third. Then you would mix and match these apps but it would promote the use of mulitple displays as well as benefit people with three or more, which thunderbolt, Cinema Display and Pro computers support.

  • [SOLVED / Workaround] Hiding a TrueCrypt volume

    I have a TrueCrypt file that contains my personal information. I mount it from the command line when I need it. How can I hide the mounted TrueCrypt volume from appearing in my file manager (PCManFM)?
    I tried creating a udev rule in "/etc/udev/rules.d/99-hide-partitions.rules":
    KERNEL=="dm-[0-9]*", ENV{UDISKS_IGNORE}:="1"
    It had a small effect: the volume still appears in the file manager but it has a different name.
    Here is the output from "udevadm monitor" when I mount the volume:
    KERNEL[720.311712] add /devices/virtual/bdi/0:34 (bdi)
    UDEV [720.329283] add /devices/virtual/bdi/0:34 (bdi)
    KERNEL[720.523306] change /devices/virtual/block/loop0 (block)
    KERNEL[720.525338] change /devices/virtual/block/loop0 (block)
    KERNEL[720.535095] add /devices/virtual/bdi/254:0 (bdi)
    UDEV [720.537028] add /devices/virtual/bdi/254:0 (bdi)
    KERNEL[720.537390] add /devices/virtual/block/dm-0 (block)
    UDEV [720.538406] add /devices/virtual/block/dm-0 (block)
    KERNEL[720.540339] change /devices/virtual/block/dm-0 (block)
    UDEV [720.558886] change /devices/virtual/block/loop0 (block)
    UDEV [720.588484] change /devices/virtual/block/loop0 (block)
    UDEV [720.612304] change /devices/virtual/block/dm-0 (block)
    How can I hide the volume from my file manager? Should I use udev or another method?
    Thank you!

    Yes, as far as I know dm-0 is correct, you can use it like that in a udev rule.
    Did you have a look at '/lib/udev/rules.d' , maybe you need to change "99" in 99-hide-partitions.rules, it needs to have a different number I guess, looking at the files in  '/lib/udev/rules.d'.
    I would call it 15-hide-partitions.rules, really I don't know if it works, but you could try
    I can't check it for you as I don't have a dm device on this machine.
    edit: Ah, so now I see what you mean, although I don't have a solution.
    I checked with Truecrypt volume on USB disk, all other USB's are correctly ignored, also the USB disk with truecrypt vol. on it. When I mount it, it shows up in the list.
    I tried to write a few rules for it, but they all fail, I use a little script to enable/disable it which is working fine for USB.
    I guess you already issued a command like this to find out more about your device:
    #udevadm info -a -p $(udevadm info -q path -n /dev/sd**)
    Because it looks like when you issue the command, dm-0 is not appearing in the list, I only see this with "udevadm monitor" , so I try some more, I think however, we need some help
    edit2: I have been playing around with udev, I just couldn't get it to work ,so I wrote a little script for it, maybe you can use it, with an alias in your zshrc
    It's just a little mount/unmount script, check your major/minor number, and change the mountpoint to yours.
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ "$(mountpoint -d /media/truecrypt1)" = "254:0" ] ; then
    sudo umount /media/truecrypt1
    echo "Device /media/truecrypt1 is unmounted"
    else
    sudo mount /dev/dm-0 /media/truecrypt1
    echo "Device /media/truecrypt1 is mounted"
    fi
    exit 0

  • Why Do I have A Volume Named  Network On My Desktop  --  What Did I Do

    I noticed yesterday that I have a volume on my Desktop named "Network". here was also an icon called Server", but that disappeared after I restarted. "Network" may have been there 2- 3 days ago, but I'm sure it wasn't there before 3 days ago. No other users on the machine have it. I can't unmount it. Where did it come from?
    I am running OS 10.4.10 on an iMac G3. I normally connect to the internet via ethernet. I have a cable modem and the line from the modem goes to a wireless router. My computer is connected via ethernet from the router to my Mac.
    The other day I disconnected my ethernet and tried to connect wireless. It seems to accept the password, but I could not connect. I never had a problem before.
    Other details:
    I have tried restarts and complete shut down with no affect.
    I start-up from an external firewire hard drive. When I start up using the internal "iMac 40G" drive, the Network volume does not appear.
    I haven't added or deleted any items from my account's list of Login items.
    Internet Sharing is Off; Firewall is On with Network Time the only checked item (which it has been for years); Personal Fire Sharing is off with no items checked.
    I'm don't have a lot of networking knowledge, although I do understand some terminology.
    Any assistance will be appreciated.

    Thanks, but still is not resolved. My Finder prefs didn't have show the Network Icon in the sidebar. I tried toggling it on and off anyway.
    I logged in as root user. The Network icon is on the root desktop. but it is an alias. The original is Home. I could trash the folder Library which is shown when I open Network; it also was an alias. But when I tried to trash the alias "Network", it wouldn't let me because I "don't have sufficient privileges".
    When I login with my normal ID, the icon is not an alias -- it is a volume. I can't trash any part of it. Get Info shows server address as nfs://automount%29-nsf%20%5B143]. My permissions are I can read only; owner is system with read and write access; group is wheel with read only access; others can read only.

  • When NOT using icons on the toolbar, side-bar drop-down for additional toolbar items has disappeared with Firefox 4 and accessing these items requires clicking 'Bookmarks', then 'Show all bookmarks' then 'Toolbar'--ugh, what a pain.

    On older versions of Firefox, Toolbar links ran across the top of my screen, with a drop-down to the far right which would show additional Toolbar items for which there was not room on the screen.
    With Firefox 4, if I'm not using icons (text only), the dedicated Toolbar drop-down is gone and I have to first click 'Bookmarks' to the right of the Toolbar ribbon, then 'Show All Bookmarks', then 'Toolbar' in order to access my additional Toolbar links. Could anyone have made it any harder?
    Why doesn't someone just restore the drop-down at the far right of the Toolbar so that all of my Toolbar items (which I prefer to keep separately from the regular Bookmark items, else I would have just plain bookmarked those items in the first place) are readily accessible?

    You see the orange (on Linux gray) Firefox button if the Menu Bar is hidden (View > Toolbars > Customize or right-click a toolbar).<br />
    If you need to access the hidden Menu bar then press F10 or hold down the Alt key to make the Menu Bar appear temporarily.<br />
    You only see the Bookmarks menu button if the Menu bar is hidden.

  • Logo Component - Design mode shows the edit component toolbar don't show "Edit" button

    I just created a Logo component on my website following the CQ "How to create a Fully Featured Internet Website" guide.
    I do create the logo component, edited the jsp page with the following code
    <%@include file="/libs/foundation/global.jsp"%>
    <%@ page import="com.day.text.Text,
                     com.day.cq.wcm.foundation.Image,
                     com.day.cq.commons.Doctype" %>
    <%  String home = Text.getAbsoluteParent(currentPage.getPath(), 2);
        Resource res = currentStyle.getDefiningResource("fileReference");
        if (res == null) {
            res = currentStyle.getDefiningResource("file");
        log.error("path is:" + currentStyle.getPath());
    %>
        <a href="<%= home %>.html"> <%
        if (res == null) {
            %> Home Page <%
        }else {
            Image img = new Image(res);
            img.setItemName(Image.NN_FILE, "file");
            img.setItemName(Image.PN_REFERENCE, "fileReference");
            img.setSelector("img");
            img.setDoctype(Doctype.fromRequest(request));
            img.setAlt("Home Page");
            img.draw(out);
        %>
        </a>
    Then, I created the tag "<cg:include>" in my jsp page, calling this jsp.
    After all that, I created the Design Dialog for my logo component, then a "items" node under the tab1 node of the design dialog.
    After this, finnaly, the widget node (absParent), under the items created before.
    A lot of propertys later, I got my Logo object in the page, but the toolbar with the "Edit" button on Design mode don't show me the "Edit button"
    Someone can tell me how to get the button there?
    Is some property that I may have forgotten?
    Thanks.

    Basically, the edit toolbar has the same with as your component, which indeed is problematic for narrow components.
    But you can work-around that with a basic CSS hack:
    .cq-editbar {
        min-width: 200px !important;
        _width: 200px !important; /* IE6 */
    This seems to be fixed in CQ 5.5.

  • Device Names in Finder for TrueCrypt Volumes

    When using TrurCrypt, all mounted volumes show up in Finder (under Devices) as NONAME even though different mount points are specified in TrueCrypt while mounting them. Is there a way to see the mount point names in the Devices list?

    Figured out a way to fix it - maybe it's a trivial thing. Right click on the NONAME, click Get Info and change the name in resultant dialog. This name is remembered even if I dismount the volume in TrueCrypt and then remount it.

  • Show Brush Hardness in Toolbar?

    In CS5 one can change brush size and hardness with Alt + rt. click and move mouse.  The brush size can be seen in the box, but the hardness has to be guessed at by judging the color size within the brush circle.  With small brushes this is more difficult.  Is there any way for the hardness level to show without opening the brush drop down box?
    Would be ideal, at least for me, to have the hardness listed next to the brush size.

    Good suggestion!  Unfortunately, I know of no way to have it show up in the toolbar, but if you make the entire Brush panel visible (Window - Brush) you will, of course, have a full-time display showing all the parameters.  It does require some precious screen real estate to keep that visible, though, and there's no "non-expanded view" for it.
    To make matters worse, without OpenGL enabled the brush size/hardness gestures (Alt-right click & drag) still work, but there's no color overlay at all, only an outline, so one cannot even guess the hardness.

  • How to get Time Machine write to TrueCrypt volume on external HDD.

    Hi folks
    I have an external HDD that I want to use as the destination for Time Machine's backed-up files.
    I want to keep this backup data secure, so I have encrypted the entire HDD by creating a TrueCrypt volume on it (not a file container volume).
    When I mount the TrueCrypt volume, Time Machine doesn't recognise it; within Time Machine, when I try to select a Backup Disk, my TrueCrypt volume in not listed.
    I can, however, access the encrypted volume through Finder, so it seems to be a drawback of Time Machine, so it appears that TrueCrypt has successfully and correctly created the volume. The problem appears to be on Time Machine's part.
    Has anyone successfully used a TrueCrypt volume as the destination for Time Machine backups?
    I'm grateful for your help and advice.
    Regards,
    Ken.

    Hi,
    Pondini wrote:
    I'm a bit confused . . . where is your iMac and where is the external HD? If you encrypt your backups, what about your iMac? Isn't it more likely to be stolen than an external HD?
    Both co-located at my desk. iMac is secured with a cable lock, which, granted, is probably quite easy to cut for someone who is intent on taking the computer; somewhat of a deterrent for a burglar who might just grab whatever is easy to take. No slot for cable lock on HDD, so someone can just make off with that.
    Do you really need to have all your backups encrypted?
    No, not essential. However, the fact that anyone can connect a USB cable to the HDD and access all my files is a little worrying. I can password protect access to the iMac, but I have nothing similar for the HDD.
    Also, I was just thinking that if I could write all the backups in an encrypted location, it would be done-and-dusted. No thinking about what files should be encrypted, which disk image do I save them to, no mounting/unmounting of the encrypted disk image when I need to access a sensitive file, etc. Just that little bit simpler—I'm a fan of no hassle.
    An alternative would be to created an +encrypted disk image+ on your Mac, and put your sensitive documents in it. The backup of it will remain encrypted, so they're safe in both locations.
    Will consider this option. Seems to be the most appropriate for what I'm trying to do.
    See [Protecting confidential documents in a secure disk image|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/11.5/en/7102.html]. Note that the disk image will not be backed-up while it's mounted.
    Duly noted. Thanks again for your help.

  • Disk Array volumes showing up on servers

    I have a StorageTek 2540 array with 2 controllers (A & B). I also have 2 servers T5220 (connected to controller A) and a T2000 (connected to controller B)
    I have created several volumes on the array some pointing to the A controller, some to the B controller.
    When I run the format command on the 5220 (A controller) all of the volumes show c2t0d0...d3.
    From the T2000 (B controller) the format command shows c2t2d0..3.
    If you try from the 5220 (A controller) to format a volume that is pointing through the B controller, it won't work. That's great no destroying an existing volume.
    I know which volume points to what server, that isn't a problem yet.
    My question is:
    Is there a way on the Array to only show the volumes pointing to each controller individually instead of together?
    thanks

  • [SOLVED] pam_mount will not mount truecrypt volume on login.

    Hello.
    I did system upgrade yesterday and encountered some problems with mounting my Truecrypt volume with pam_mount. I use pam_mount to mount my encrypted /home partionion at login. After first reboot and loging in I was dropped to / directory, with my /home partition clearly not mounted. I acknowledged the message from udev in pacman, that in some circumstances adding 'loop' to MODULES array in /etc/mkintcpio.conf is required and for a moment I thought it was it, but I tried this and it didn't help. Suprisingly, after another reboot I was placed im my home directory afer login, but it appears to be empty - I can see only dotfiles of few programs I used after the upgrade:
    $ls -A ~/
    .bash_history .links .qingy .viminfo .wicd
    but my /home partition is obviously still not mounted. My relevant config files:
