Have upgrade for CS4 & CS5 Is "tab" & overlapping spaces fixed?

I just started working with CS4 and haven't installed 5. I can't stand the new interface with the tabs. Unchecking the box to revert to floating windows doesn't work and everytime I open a file it reverts to tabs. Even when I've selected floating windows in the workflow, it needs to be reselected every time I load a new file to add to my project. Not to mention the new windows covering all the menu/tool/pref boxes.
My question, is this fixed later in a 4 update or in 5?
If not, can anyone refer me to a decent Mac photo editor that may lack some of photoshop's features but will work with layers and a few of the less powerful features? I'm asking this seriously. I'm ready to list my photoshop license (with a legit transfer) on ebay. Would like your opinion as to subsitutes on the Mac...even on Windows. I'd even switch to windows to be done with this mess Adobe has turned a great program into. I'm not a professional and don't need this hassel in my life.
Please no flames. I'm not trying to start a war. Just thoughtful considerate replies?
Thanks.

Have you turned both relevant preferences off?

Unfortunately, no. the CS programs are platform specific. You have three options. Upgrade to CS6 and request a platform swap, in which case you will give up the Windows serial number. Second, you could buy a second serial number for Mac outright. Third, you can buy the subscription to Photoshop CC, which can be used on both Windows and Macintosh..

  • Which NVIDIA graphics card for CS4 & CS5.5 Premiere?

I just upgraded to CS5.5 Production Premium but I'm still using XP 32bit. That means I had to load the CS4 version of Premiere and After Effects. Sooner or later I'll upgrade to 64bit Win but in the mean time which graphics card will give me the best bang for the buck and still be useful for CS5.5 later? Money isn't an issue, I just don't want to pay for something and not benefit from it. What's worse is Adobe doesn't even list cards newer than the 8800 and Quadro FX for CS4! Weren't GTX cards available before CS5 came out? Do I need to update a file in CS4 apps to make them accept cards for GPU processing?
Adobe and NVIDIA keep pushing the Quadro cards but when you look at the benchmarks it looks like the GTX cards do just as well. I will use the system for gaming sometimes so DX11 is a must. I have a watercooled i7 920 OC @ 4.0GHz and very stable, temps never go above 60C under full load. I have 6GB RAM and use a memory handler to access the RAM over what XP can use, and use it for virtual mem and caches etc. But my current graphics card is a slightly OC'd 9800GT w/512MB. My system doesn't like to scrub video that isn't rendered unless it's at lower resolutions and obviously I'd like rendering to be as fast as possible.
    Looking around I see:
    GTX560-TI @ $240
    GTX570 @ $300
    GTX480 @ $300
    GTX570 @ $300
    GTX580 @ $460
    Quadro 4000 @ $550
    Quadro 5000 @ $1200
So what's the secret? Where's the sweet spot?
    TIA

The "secret" to MPE bliss is to get the video card AND Win7 64bit AND load your CS5.5. I really don't think that the video card would help much running CS4 on 32bit. Regarding which card, I'd say the sweet spot since you want to game and use CS5.5 would be to go with a GTX 480 with two or three fans (single fan reference design is too LOUD). Also, if you are not going to Win7 right away, delay your purchase and the next GEN of NVidia will be closer or out and you may either want one of the new smaller die-size cards or you could benefit form lower prices on what's available today.

So you're saying on Win32 and CS4 Pr, Ae, AME, the graphics card doesn't matter at all? That I won't see any improvement over my 512MB 9800GT?
If I was to narrow it down even farther, the most important aspect would be in the "preview" performance. I can always render when I'm not using the system but sometimes the preview windows hang while working on a project. The problem worsens as the resolution increases or as the project gets more complicated. I had the same problem with PP1.5 which is why I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to see if a newer version would help.
Cooling isn't an issue as long as a water block is available for my next card. I've read the 570 & 580 may be the same reference layout and use the same coolers, I'm still looking into that. I know I can liquid cool the 480, 560TI, 580. I have no idea about the Quadro's, I've never seen a block for those.
I'd like to go to Win64 but other software etc is keeping me from getting there soon. I'm looking into dual booting but have read about lots of problems with folder/file sharing issues when going from XP to Win7. I keep all files/projects on a seperate drive and some are shared over a network. If MS hasn't solved the sharing issues I'm forced to stick with XP. I have too many files that need read/write access and Win7 is stated to set all shares to read only. I'm still researching if it's been resolved.
So it's important to know if anything will help CS4 because as stated above, it'll make more sence to wait for the next gen cards for use in CS5.5.
The bottom line is, I built this system from the ground up just a few years ago before Win64 was so popular. I used the very best components (the 9800GT is actually the lowest componet I bought because gaming wasn't that important at the time). I'm running steady overclocked @ 4.0 and boot from an SSD drive. The data drives are 7200RPM and I bought the fastest RAM I could at the time. Obviously people were editing happily a few years ago on equipment inferior to mine. What's the catch? What am I missing to run smoothly on Win32? I'm assuming it's the graphics card because it's the only place I skimped. Maybe I have a software conflict keeping any version of Pr from working smoothly.
Being 3 gens behind, and mediocre at that, I thought the card might be a good place to start.

  • New Mac purchase Quad or Eight Core for CS4/CS5 Photoshop

Its time to replace my vintage G5, but I am struggling with how to choose between a Quad-core or Eight-core Mac Pro. Most of my work is Photoshop for print, with files of various sizes (typically 300-300 layered PSD files, but occasionally upwards of 1.5 GB+ layered PSD files). I also use CS4 InDesign, Illustrator, DreamWeaver, and Acrobat.
For the short term, a 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro would be fine, but the 4 RAM slots are restrictive. On the other hand, a 2.26 or 2.66 Eight-Core machine will theoretically give better PS performance, room for more RAM and more long term value. I can add RAM later, but I'll have to live with my processor choice. As best as I can tell, the Eight-core machines aren't a good value for Photoshop work until the software uses all cores. I assume that Leopard and CS5 will eventually well together. My gamble is wether a Quad-Core will serve me long term, or if the additional cores and RAM of the Eight-Core will be worth the extra investment now.
I've read about problems with CS4 and the Nehalem processors, but I hope most of these have been resolved by now. Unfortunately, I can't afford to wait a few months before CS5 is sorted out, so I hope to make a safe choice for CS4 now, that will work with CS5 down the road.
Adobe TechNote: Optimize performance in Photoshop CS4 on Mac OS
    ID: kb404440
    Last updated:2010-02-09
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404440.html#Operating%20system%20software
    Excerpts from Apple TechNote kb404440:
    Processor speed
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) of the Macintosh limits the speed of Photoshop. Since Photoshop manipulates large quantities of data and performs many calculations, its speed is greatly dependent on processor speed.
Photoshop requires a PowerPC G5 or an Intel-based processor. Photoshop can also take advantage of multiprocessor systems (that is, systems that have two or more PowerPC or Intel processors), which are much faster than a single-processor systems. All Photoshop features are faster on a multiprocessor system, and some features are much faster. Note that there is a law of diminishing returns with multiple processors: the more processors you use, the less you get from each addition processor. Therefore, you may not experience expected speed increases if you use more than four processors.
Excerpt from the TechNote above states that all PS features are faster on a muti-processor machine. Per Lloyd Charles' tests, (http://macperformanceguide.com/Reviews-MacProNehalem-MoreIsLess.html) the dual CPU is actually slower for many functions in PS. Lloyd's tests were done in OS X 10.5.6 (updated in June 1, 2009). Have the newer Mac Pro machines or Leopard changed any of the performance issues since Lloyds' tests? Sorry if these tests no longer apply, but I am trying to confirm how things stand at this point.

Wow, I may not know all of them because after a certain point, I quit using it on the quad core.
Illustrator - I didn't use it that much on the q4, but the color picker doesn't work.  When I click on the color box to change colors, the small color box with the slider is the only thing that opens.  on the Duo core, the color picker opens.
Photoshop - On the i7 quad core - Constant crashes and other glitches that I can't remember because I haven't used it since April.  But the main problem that I encountered is that the layers palette quits working.  It may be ok when I first open PS, but then becomes greyed out - nothing in the palette (either from the dropdown menu or the layers palette box) works - including layer styles like drop shadow, merge, flatten, new layer or anything else in layers.  If I opened another file, it would be the same way.  Without being able to use layers, and with the constant crashes, I quit using that computer.
The only problem I have on the duo core is in Photoshop in using tools.  Frequently, when trying to use a tool, I get a small menu open at my cursor.  It keeps popping up and I have to leave tools and do something else then go back to the tool.  The tools I've had this with specifically are the paint brush, select tools, burn and dodge tools.
I'm also quite annoyed that twain is no longer included so that I can use my scanner within PS.  I just talked with a friend this afternoon who downloaded a trial version of CS5 this afternoon to be sure it works before she upgrades.  She is upset because her scanner doesn't work in PS and she is having problems with other plug-ins so she is not going to upgrade.

  • How to Package Photoshop Extension for cs4/cs5 with manifest.xml

    Hello,
tl;dr: How can I package my extension for both cs4 and cs5 in a way that respects the extension's window geometry?
I have a panel that specifies window geometry in it's manifest.xml. When the panel is installed into Photoshop's panels/ folder, the geometry gets ignored, so I'm trying to package the panel as an extension to be installed via the Extension Manager. I have run into different problems for each CS version. I've read quite a few pdfs about the Extension Manager, UCF command line packaging, etc, and have not been able to find a solution that works for both platforms.
    My understaning
My trial and error research has lead me to understand that the extension's files must eventually end up in the (mac) /Library/Application Support/Adobe/<CSversion>ServiceManager/extensions/ directory. In CS5, if the extension's folder contains a manifest.xml file (ex: /extensions/GuideGuide/CSXS/manifest.xml) that specifies window geometry, Photoshop will respect that window geometry when the panel opens. However, in CS4, this is not enough. From my tests, Photoshop CS4 doesn't seem to do anything with the manifest.xml file. Instead, I had to modify /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS4ServiceManager/ServiceManifest.xml and add my extension to it's contents. Once I did this, Photoshop CS4 launches my panel and respects it's window geometry.
The problem with this is that it's a manual installation. I can't ask my users to dig around in their system files to install my panel. In addition, since it's unsigned using this method, it won't work if they're not flagged for debugging. I've started exploring using the Extension Manager, but I have run into problems that I cannot find ansers in the few pdfs about packaging that I've been able to find.
    CS5 Problems
If I use the UCF command line tool, I can package and sign my file. It installs fine and does what I want. However, using this method, I haven't been able to find a way to specify the author and description that shows up in the Extension Manager.
    CS4 Problems
The UCF command line tool doesn't appear to make packages that can be installed by CS4, and I haven't been able to find one that is compatable. I've had to result to using the Extension Manager to package my extension based on a .mxi file. The problem I have here is that installing files this way limits me to putting them in the /panels directory, which then causes the panel to ignore the indow geometry. Is there a way with an .mxi file to install in the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/<CSversion>ServiceManager/extensions/ directory and modify the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS4ServiceManager/ServiceManifest.xml file?
There must be, because Kuler and other extensions are installed there.
Thank you SO much for any help you might provide. I've spent weeks trying to get this to work and have run into nothing but dead ends and wild goose chases.

Your extension is a CSXS extension. For CSXS extension it's introduced in Extension Manager 2.1. (You can download Extension manager 2.1 from http://www.adobe.com/exchange/em_download/em20_download.html)
In Extension Manager CS2.1 only MXP package is supported. In Extension Manager CS5 CSXS extension must be packaged by ZXP format. So you have to generate two packages for CS4(mxp) and CS5(zxp)
For CS5, you can use ucf.jar to generate the zxp package.
For CS4, you have to create an MXI file and package it by Extension Manager 2.1 to mxp package. Here is a sample CSXS mxi file:

               name="CSXS_TEST_EXTENSION"

  • Upgrade for Fireworks CS5 won't accept Macromedia Fireworks 8 serial number

    Hi,
I own Macromedia Fireworks 8 and wanted to upgrade to FW CS5.  I purchased the upgrade, but when I tried to install it, it wouldn't accept the serial number.  I have repeatedly and very carefully typed in the number, so it is not a mistake.  What can I do?

  • Long-time Elements user who had planned for CS4, CS5 or CS6 on disk

As a long-time Elements user who had planned to purchase Photoshop CS4, CS5 or CS6 right before the Cloud changed everything, why can't I get the cloud subscription for $9.99? This makes me want to just buy an older disk on EBay or elsewhere.

why can't I get the cloud subscription for $9.99?

  • New Build for CS4, CS5, and upgrade

Hardware problems, and I have to upgrade even though I can't afford it.  I only need to run CS4, but I want to try to keep an easy upgrade path to MPE and more RAM.  I think I can run CS5 on this rig for SD; do you agree?
I've been following the various discussions (including the latest "CS4" and "Budget build" and I have searched this forum for each component.  But this is complex and a moving target.  so before I spin my wheels more, what do you think?  My decision point for several things has been what is cheapest without totally ignoring quality.  Several of these components appear to have mail in rebates that are not reflected in the price.  Total is about $1400.  (All newegg.)
I did forget to swap a velociraptor system drive; adds about a $100.  From what I have read here, I can do without additional CPU cooling for now?

I didn't post any pictures... so a couple of thoughts
1st is I am OK with my mid-tower, but a full tower would be better so all the various cables wouldn't be so cramped
2nd is that I mounted the CPU cooler after the motherboard was in and ram installed... this was in case there was a problem with the non-Intel cooler getting the way of ram install, which turned out not to be a problem with the brand/model I picked... and it was VERY nice that there was a cut-out in the motherboard mounting area to allow me full access to the back side of the motherboard to mount the cooler
Actually, a 3rd thought is that I added 2 side fans right over the CPU and nVidia card, so have plenty of cooling even though I do not overclock

  • CS6 upgrade for photoshop CS5 gives errors

I recently purchased your Photoshop CS6 upgrade.  I had been using Photoshop CS5 previously.  When I entered my serial number I got a message stating that no qualifying product can be found on my computer.  In the product drop down box I found and selected CS5 but when I enter the serial number of my CS5 Master Collection (which Photoshop was part of it) I get a error saying that serial number is not for a qualifying product.
    What should I do?

You cannot upgrade a component of a Creative Suite to the next version - which is what it sounds like you're attempting.
e.g. you cannot upgrade to Photoshop CS6 using the Photoshop CS5 from Master Collection CS5.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/faq.html#upgrade-eligibility
"Am I eligible for upgrade pricing from an earlier Creative Suite edition to an individual CS component?
No. Adobe does not offer upgrade pricing for customers wishing to move from a suite edition to an individual CS component. For complete upgrade information for the product you are interested in, consult the upgrade eligibility chart on that product's buying guide page."
From Master Collection CS5, you can only upgrade to a CS6 Suite (does not have to be Master Collection CS6).
If Photoshop CS6 is all you want then either purchase a full version of CS6 or consider joining the Cloud.

    > It's barely functional.
    Ryan,
How is it more "functional" to create a thread open to any and every feature request subject--with no organization to it at all?
One of the reasons the Feature Request sub-forum becomes "useless" is the insistence of some people to create such ill-conceived catch all threads.
How is anyone served by a "whatever comes," batch of individuals' feature request lists
within the feature request forum--with no more subject organization than "This is the grab-bag that was started by some guy with a screen name of Rydog23"?
Don't you understand that for anyone to get any use out such a thread, they would have to read each and every post in it to see if a particular feature idea has already been mentioned?
What more assured way is there for a good idea (should one be suggested) to fall into a "black hole"?
Please stop creating these ridiculous no-subject grab-bag threads.

  • Hi i have asked for this help before and it was fixed but cant remember how to do it My ipad has lost sound in certain apps and general typing i remember fixing it through the settings can any one please help it not the mute

Hi I have had this problem before butr cant remember how to fix it . What has happened is certain apps have no sound where as others do I also have no sound when typing.I remember when i last asked for help with this problem it was done through settings. It not on mute Please help me.

You can enable keyboard sounds via Settings > General > Sounds . If they are enabled but you can't hear them then have you checked that you haven't got notifications muted (which will also affect most apps) ?
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • Wrong upgrade version for Dreamweaver CS5.5

    Hey Everyone,
I would really appreciate your help here.
Our company has purchased around 12 copies of Adobe products, from the suites to individual items. We recently decided to order a couple of upgrades from Amazon. These are upgrades for Dreamweaver CS5.5 from version CS5.
When the products arrived, I opened one of them and then got an alert saying it was the wrong version of Dreamweaver, when attempting to install. It turns out, we have CS4 and not CS5.5!
I can't get a refund from Amazon because I have opened the products (they refunded the other one as it was unopened).
I essentially need an upgrade from CS4 to CS5 as otherwise I am effectively left with a very expensive paperweight here... problem is, Adobe don't sell these anymore. I'm more than happy to pay the difference, but would hate to have to throw away this copy simply because I can't upgrade to the version in between.
Any help would be very much appreciated, this is really stressing me out
    Thank you

  • Photoshop CS4, CS5 and CS6

I've just upgraded to Photoshop CS6. I still have applications for CS4 and CS5. This includes Bridge, Device Central, Extendscript Toolkit, and Extention Manager. Each version has one.
Can I get rid of all relating to CS4 and CS5 now that I'm using CS6?  Any downsides?
I also have some plugin programs like the Topaz Suite and now Perfect Photosuite 7. How do I migrate them into CS6?
Thanks for any suggestions and help.
    Bob Collins

Generally, you would have got the option to remove the old versions.  However, you can uninstall the old versions but you should do it from Windows Add/Remove modules in the Control Panel so that it doesn't remove the common files from your machine.
If you are not constrained by disk space then the best thing is to leave the old programs on the system until you are familiar with the new features of the upgraded program.
I have renmoved the old programs from my Windows 7 because I wasn't using them.  These days I use "Corel Paintshop Pro X5" and "Corel Draw Graphics Suite X6".
Photoshop is for something I need to test for my colleagues who are not familiar with certain features in Corel so I tell them how to do it in PS CS6.
    Hope this helps.

  • Photoshop CS4 & CS5: Fullscreen + Taskbar ?

    Hi all!
Does anyone find a solution for the bug (for me it is) in Photoshop CS4 & CS5 - in Fullscreen mode the taskbar is no visible (MS Windows)?
In case someone from Adobe read this - COM'ON PEOPLE!!! IS NOT SO HARD TO FIX THIS!!! ADD A SIMPLE CHECK BOX IN OPTIONS, FOR USERS THAT NEEEEEED THEIR TASKBAR IN FULLSCREEN! how many complains do you need to fix this!?? Think again... a lot of people are stuck to CS3 just for this problem!
    Best Regards,
    Angry CS3 user, dreaming for CS4 & CS5 Photoshop
PS: @ admins -> please, move this to Photoshop -> Windows! It'll be more correct!

Gee, thanks a pantload, Dr Misfit, assuming you're talking about my suggestion to use Photoshop in a Restored window (i.e., in a window not occupying the full screen).
Oh, and you're also welcome for the link I provided to a tool that forces the Windows 7 Taskbar to be on top.
The *only* downside to using Photoshop in Restored view that's been identified, and I agree that it's not pleasant, is that in Restored view and using Tabs you're prevented from panning an image around to where you want it if it fits entirely within the window.  So instead of working in the center of your screen you might have to work offset toward the corner.  Aw.  Now THAT's what I call a Big Deal compared to missing those all important Skype calls from your girlfriend.
I'm not against you working the way you want - it'd be just peachy if it worked just the way you like - but I'm here to tell you it's really, really not going to get changed in the current version just for you and the other three people on the planet who are for some reason jumping up and down about it.  Adobe ain't Burger King.  But someone who actually DID know something about Adobe and Photoshop would already know that.
You want to see the Taskbar now, work in Restored view.  Simple as that.  Get over it.
And have a little more respect for the people who try to help you for no reward other than the satisfaction of having helped someone.
