Good Afternoon poolkitty,
I am sorry to hear of the difficulties you are experiencing in attempting to update the software on your iPhone 4. Although you can complete the update via wi-fi, we recommend completing the update using iTunes, as this is the preferred option. The link attached below includes both options.

Trying to restore / update ipod 3rd generation - keep getting error message - The ipod touch could not be restores. An unknown error occurred (-1).Error 1 or -1
This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. in that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

As you can see the operating system is well out of date. This has been an ongoing issue for quite some time. Any help would be appreciated. Would going to an Apple store for hands-on help, be the best solution??
Sounds like you might need to take it to an Apple Store but if it is an iPhone 3G it would no longer be under warranty.
Looking at the Apple Store online you can get an iPhone 3GS from $49 on AT&T if it comes to having to get a new one. Your other option is second hand. -

Tried to update to 10.7 but keep getting error 2324
itunes wanted me to update. However it wouldn't because of error2324. now I don't have itunes at all
Although it's a better bet with a 2330 error, I'd try running a chkdsk over your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you've got your program files installed on).
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards? -
HT201210 Trying to update my IPAD 2 and keep getting error (9)
Yesterday I check my IPAD 2 (wifi + 3G) for any APP update, it was downloading and stop, lock up on me. When I turn back on it's showing ITunes hookup. I update my Mac to the lastest ITunes and try to restore and update my IPAD. It was a no-go, keep coming up with error. What would cause that and how do I fix that to update my IPAD to IOS6 and hopefully my data is still there.

I have tried every trouble shooting step there is. restarting my computer amd restarting my device. It died while i was at work and when i went to plug it into my car charger all i saw was the apple logo coming and going. so when i got home i put it in recovery mode and tried to restore and I got Error 2001. I have no idea what to do.
Visit an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store to get it checked. If they can't fix this, you'll have to pay the Out-Of-Warranty-Service fee to get a new replacement for a reduced price:
Out-of-warranty repair service
If your repair isn’t covered by Apple’s One Year Limited Warranty, AppleCare+, or AppleCare Protection Plan, your iPhone might be eligible for out-of-warranty service. For example, liquid damage isn’t covered by warranty but might be eligible for out-of-warranty service. Some damage isn’t eligible at all, for example if your device has been broken into multiple pieces. See Apple’s Repair Terms and Conditions for complete details.

I just tried to install the iTunes update 11.4.1 and keep getting error messages. I have never had this issue before over many years of using iTunes and getting updates to the software. I have removed the iTunes from my computer and reinstalled it but keep getting the errors. Here are the error statements: "Runtime error: Program: C:\Program Files(x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe; R6034; An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Please contact the application's support team. iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 1114)
