Having a problem with character styles in indesign

I'm having another problem with my style sheets in indesign, I've now got an awful lot of styles in paragraph and character styles. I've created different styles for paragraph justified text and when I go to my style in paragraph styles to use tight text copy, character styles always overides it so it means I have to do whole lot of extra formatting just to put it right. Does anyone have an idea how I can stop character styles overiding paragraph styles? Thanks very much.

Perhaps your character styles apply more than you actually want? I.e., rather than just "+Italic" it also applies custom tracking. You should use character styles only to override the stuff you really want to change.
You can check by calling up the definition for those character styles; the huge "Style Settings" text box lists all the attributes it changes.

Working with Character Styles in Photoshop CC

Hi,
I upgraded to Photoshop CC and was quite excited about the Character Styles Panel. But now, I'm completely puzzled.
It almost looks like Adobe didn't finish the feature before shipping 14.1.2
1. I can't reorder the character list? Why use a different list implementation than that for "Layer Comps?"
2. I want to copy and paste a character style from one selection to another (Basically the workflow from Apple Keynote). It should be possible with character styles, but it just didn't work:
- I select a formatted text section
   - I press "New Character Style icon"
   - I double-click the new style -> The font-size in the style differs from the font-size of the orginal selection?!
   - I'm pretty sure it has to do with style of the original text not being directly overwritten from "None", but there is no feature to "bake" style-formatting either.
3. I can't remove and restyle the Character-Style "None". But when I accidently assign "None", it is defined as 12px Arial Black . So the default-style HAS a style definition and should therefore be editable like the other character styles.
I'm completely blow away how non-intuitive the whole process is. I never had problems to understand character styles in InDesign, Pages, Word and Illustrator. But in Photoshop is either completely broken or non-intuitive.

Your sure your using photoshop cc on windows vista?
I was under the impression that photoshop cc would not even install on windows vista.
What version of camera raw do you have?
In photoshop under Help>About Plugin does it list Camera Raw and if so which version is it?
(click on the words Camera Raw to see the version)

What camera are the camera raw files from?
Officially camera raw 8.3 is the latest version of camera raw that will work on windows vista.

Im haveing a problem with google map in my adobe edge web page file project

ok iv set my google map for a certain address in adobe edge however when I load the file in a internet browser the map is scrolled further away from the address and marker that is placed on the address.
the problem is that when I load the page the map is not on target it looks like this

Having serious problems with DPS

So I posted earlier and had few reponses, but the problem has now escalated into something even more frustrating and problematic.
Before, I was having issues where updated articles would not show us updated in the slide out and drop down contents. This is still a problem. I have done everything to try and correct this from deleting and reuploading the article, to archive/redownload, and the only thing that has worked is starting a new folio which I think is rediculous. I have a 300mb file with over 40 articles, to have to make another folio would be absurd....anyone know how to fix this?
NOW however, I'm having further problems with formatting and effects. For example, when I preview my folio on the iPad, I have two articles which have outer glows, even though they are not present in the actual document. I have deleted and reuped the document and article and.same as above and nothing. Even after archiving and redownloading the folio (300 mb folio which again is becoming rediculous) the portrait version got rid of the outer glow, but the landscape version still has an outer glow.
Anyone know why this would be happening and how to fix it? I haven't had a problem until yesterday. I have done everything including reset my iPad and it has not helped.

Have you verified that you've updated the article in Folio Builder Panel? Make sure to save the portrait and landscape versions of your InDesign document and then select the article in FBP and say update. Also, check and make sure you aren't accidentally looking at a folio that's been fully published (no blue stripe in the library). If you're looking at a published folio you also have to remember to go to Folio Producer and click update so the updates are pushed to the production servers.

Conditional build tags with character styles and ignored text

I have recently moved my projects from RH HTML X5 to RH HTML 8 and this is when the following problem appeared. I use lots of conditional build tags within the help projects. Some of these tags are for my own use for reference and I combine these with character styles containing a coloured background (highlight) so that they show up in the WebHelp or HTML Help output (e.g. text to identify the software version that the field/feature/text was added, reminders to check details, insertion of bug ID numbers, design document names, etc.). These areas of text are stripped out of the final build for customers by using a conditional build expression.
What I have noticed is that if a paragraph contains text with a conditional build tag applied AND that tagged text has a character style applied AND an unknown word within the conditional build tag is ignored (with the HTML tag <?rh-ignored text="word_to_be_ignored" ?>), saving the topic, closing it, then re-opening it shows that the conditional build text has stretched to the next conditional build tag, or to the end of the topic if there aren’t any other conditional build tags. This also happens by switching from Design View to HTML View. Note that this doesn’t happen if Ignore All is applied to the unknown word.
This doesn’t just apply to projects converted from RH X5. I created a new test project in RH8 and the same behaviour was observed. Similar behaviour occurred very occasionally in RH X5 but that seemed to be down to HTML tags being nested incorrectly.
The largest project contains around 1200 topics and with many hundreds of conditional build text areas this now causes a problem. I’ll probably have to locate every ignored word in an area of conditional text within each project, set it to Ignore All and then manually remove and re-apply the conditional build tags, unless someone can come up with something clever. Can anyone else replicate this and should it be logged as a bug?

Thanks - that is good info to have. But as we all agree, that does take away from the point of single-sourcing.
You aren't misunderstsanding exactly... I am doing all my conditional tagging in FM and it works like a charm in terms of the PDFs that I generate from FM, and even the conditionally tagged text in RH shows/hides correctly. The issue is I am also importing my index and TOC from FM... and even if I have an entire file in FM tagged as conditional (all the text is tagged as conditional, I don't know if you can tag a file as conditional), the file name as a heading it still appears in the RH TOC. There is no text... but in my view it shouldn't appear in the TOC either (it looks like just a broken link when I generate my online help) - this is not ideal.

Having a problem importing xml into an indesign template.

I am having a problem importing xml into an indesign template. The xml data is there and will populate the columns on the document but I am having problems matching styles, removing data that should not be mapped and importing repeated same fields but differnet data.

Having a problem with eBooks in my iTunes library.

As the title says, I'm having some problems with the iTunes library not reflecting what's actually on the disk.
I add the ebook and it seems to add ok. The file gets consolidated into /mymusic/books under the author correctly, but the book is missing from the library. The book is in ePub format, and seems to have the right file extension and shows up as a file of "ePub" type in windows explorer.
Any ideas? Is there a way to re-build the library or a portion of it?

Is anyone having a problem with the new iPad (Gen. 3) not staying connected to the charger? It seems to ALWAYS get jiggled loose and no longer be charging. My iPad 1 has no issue but I can't browse Internet w/o new iPad unplugging. Horrible!

I notice that my new IPad (3rd generation) will not stay connected to the power cord at all, I'm not exagerating, if I plug it in and browse the Internet without fail it will become unplugged and I will have to push the plug back in (Ba-beep). Ive actually grown to despise that sound when you plug your iPhone or iPad in because it reminds me of how much money I spent on something that PHYSICALLY will not charge while I'm using it.
I know the problem with it holding a charge while in use, I get it, the screen is amazing and it takes a lot to run the display, however, it is unacceptable to me that I can't even keep the thing plugged in while I'm using it. I can not even leave it on my Cal King bed overnight because I will wake up in the morning to find that the plug has been jiggled loose in a corner, so it's still attached but not making a connection thus not being charged.
I love the 4GLTE from Verizon and I love the iPad, but I'm actually using my 1st generation IPad while I am at home so I can leave my new $900 iPad on a table to charge free of incident so I can use the 4G while I'm away from wifi during the day. I have been getting more upset about this because I can not even use the Griffin extended cord to charge the iPad and be far from the plug because only the original apple sync/charge cord will have a better shot at staying in. Absolutely none of my non apple cables will stay in the iPad 3 while having it in my hands.
The plug is at an angle, unlike the first iPad, not sure about the iPad 2. Please let me know if they have same issue.
If anyone else is having this problem with the Gen 3 iPad please let me know because I'm tempted to do something about it with apple and I'm hoping that I just for some reason have a bad cable receiver or something and maybe I can get a replacement and enjoy the iPad as I had expected to. There is no reason why I should be even using my first iPad and I have friends that want to buy it but I am not selling it because I'm unable to sell it because I can't handle the new iPad while it's plugged in, that is ridiculous if it's a common issue so please let me know!

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.

According to the user's manual, I should have access to an advanced disclosure triangle which would allow me to adjust mid contrast, colour, radius, high tonal width and low tonal width.

The advanced adjustments in the Highlights & Shadows tool were combined into the "Mid Contrast" slider in Aperture 3.3 and later. If you have any images in your library that were processed in a version of Aperture before 3.3, there will be an Upgrade button in the Highlights & Shadows tool in the upper right, and the controls you asked about under the Advanced section. Clicking the Upgrade button will re-render the photo using the new version of Highlights & Shadows, and the Advanced section will be replaced with the new Mid Contrast slider. With the new version from 3.3 you probably don't need the Advanced slider, but if you want to use the older version you can download it from this page:

I have an iMac and iphoto. Currently I am having a problem with an album in iphoto. When I double click on the album all I get in the main body of the screen is a triangle with an exclamation mark and my 2 photos show at the very bottom of the window.

I have an imac and am using iphoto. Currently I am having a problem with one particular album which shows in the main part of the window a triangle with an exclamation point. The two photos are at the bottom of the main window in the same area where the "info" "edit" "create" area is. I can see the two photos but I can not get them back into the main part of the window. I can't drag them anywhere either. I can't double click or right click on either of the two photos either. All I can do is click on either one and they get a little bigger. Before I saw the exclamation point in the main body of the window all I get is two squares with nothing in them and the entire border is made up of dashes. Can someone help me?

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

M…oSoft products aren't allowed on my machines but I use LibreOffice which is a clone of Office.
When I export from Numbers to Excel and open the result with LibreOffice, the dates are correctly treated.
To be precise, dates after 01/01/1904 are correctly treated. dates before 01/01/1904 are exported as strings but, as it's flagged during the export process, it's not surprising.
