Having a problem with mini dvi to hdmi. Can see the background, but must move all screens all the way to the right to see on tv. Any solutions?

I'm having an issue with setting up mini dvi to hdmi. I can connect and see the background picture from my macbook (approx 4 years old) but in order to see any screens or video, I have to move the screen almost all the way off the macbook display to the right. Any ideas why this would happen? Also, there is no audio, although when I bought the adapter and cable at the Mac store, they assured me it would handle both.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Displays on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will makethe second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in ClamshellMode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
No Mini-DVI adapter can carry audio. The only MacBook that sends audio is the Mid 2010 model 7,1 through a Mini DisplayPort.
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.

Try closing all open applications in multitasking and power cycling the device. Once this is done test the results. If the issue persists, I have included a couple troubleshooting articles that I would recommend going through.

If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
Make sure your date, time, and time zone are correct in Settings > General > Date & Time.

Using TV as display with mini dvi and hdmi connections

I want to use my flat screen tv as a display for my airbook. I have a mini dvi to hdmi connector (supplied with my mac) and an hdmi cable. When I connect, I can see my wallpaper on the tv and my cursor but nothing else. I can move the cursor on the tv with the trackpad on my mac but there are no icons, toolbars etc. What am I doing wrong and can anyone help?

If you want to see your desktop (icons, menus, etc.) you need to go into Apple Menu: System Preferences -> Displays and select "Mirror Display" under the Arrangement tab. There is also an option that allows you to move the menu bar over to the external display.

You have the wrong adapter. The one you have is single-link DVI, which does not support 30" displays. You need the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter:

Thanks for the prompt reply; it saved me going through 16,000 permutations for nought. BTW, although it seemed to be working well yesterday, today the computer is failing to load new sites, etc. when the DIVI is plugged in, and proceeds fine when unplugged. Also, when I plug in the DVI, the screen image on the computer and tv flickers between black and then blue screens before the image stabilizes. My TV and internet are both on Comcast cable, if that makes a difference. Thanks for you help; I wish the folks who sold lme the cable knew as much. Also, no one seemed to know that you have to turn on the "mirroring" function for it to work at all.

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months. Initially, I did not have any problems. Now I have a problem with Yahoo Mail. I can open my account, but when I try to get at my mail, 2 out of 3 times I get the spinning ball that never stops. Now what?

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail. I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it. Other times, I run into the same problem. Any suggestions?

No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.

Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.

my macbook (white 2.2ghz macbook 3,1) won't detect my Polaroid 32" tv. (i know this b/c it wont let me select mirror mode on the displays menu) any tips? will i need to downgrade my OS? i read here that some people had that problem.

I am having multiple problems with my iphone 4s, people can't hear me when I call, text messages don't always send, calls go straight to voice mail. I have all bars, have hard rest 3 times. I have called apple 4 times and gone to a store. No help.

I have had the 3g, 3gs, 4 and little if any problems. I made a major mistake buying the 4s. What a horrible phone. I must say, apple service is at best, BAD. Here are the basics. I am on the same network, I call the same people, I use the same text messages as I did with the 4. With the 4s, I will call someone and they will not be able to hear me. I have to hang up and recall. Or the phone just does nothing when I press call. Text messages acts like they send but when I go back the have been sent. Sometimes the calls go direct to voice mail.
Here's what I have done. Reset, did not help. Called apple, advisor said she would call me back in 5 minutes, after waiting for 5 days for the call, I recalled, they walked me through the same things I had already done, then said to take it to a store. So they set up an appointment for the only day I could get to it, 1 1/2 hours away, on my grand son's birthday. That was okay if they fixed it. So they hard reset it, we had to setup 4 email accounts, they would not allow me to restore because they said it was a software problem. So I had to download all the apps, lost a lot of data. No fun. But if it worked! So Monday back at work, guess what, same thing. When home and did another hard reset. Still no lick. Called apple again. They said they would replace my phone, all they needed was to put a hold on a credit card for $899 or drive a 1 1/2 hours to a store.
So anyone know a good andriod phone.
PS I got a email asking about the service each time and each time I told them what a horrible phone it was and how bad service was. I have yet to hear back. I guess they do not read them!

Is your 5C already setup? If so, you'll have to erase it before you can restore the backup of your iPhone 4 to it: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings.

Mini DVI to HDMI problems with 46" Samsung TV

I bought a cable with mini DVI to HDMI at the Apple store. My new TV works great with a PC laptop, but my MBA (13") doesn't seem to be sending all the info to the TV. I get some windows, but not all of the window. I think I'm dead in the water here. Any ideas?

I have the same setup. Try messing around with the cable, it might not be properly connecting. Mine is pretty finicky and can lose connection if it's not sitting "just right". Also, just in case, click on "gather windows" on the bottom of the display settings dialog box. Then check to see if the Toshiba settings dialog box shows up. If it does, that means the TV is actually connected but the resolution settings have not be properly set yet. So if "gathering windows" gets you your TV's settings window, change the resolution to "1080p" if it offers that. If it doesn't, just go through all of the resolutions until you find one that works/works best.

VGA vs Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter

I'm about to buy an external monitor to use with my MacBook Pro late 2008. I do understand HDMI (digital) looks much better than VGA (analog), so I'm thinking about buying a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. My questions are:
Does the Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter decrease video quality? Is it noticeable?
Is it worth buying the adapter? If so, are there any known issues with third-party adapters?

If your macbook has mini-DVI then HDMI or no HDMI you will not get any audio passed through the HDMI connection because DVI does not pass audio. You would need to pass the audio separately via analog stereo line out.
But what difference does it make anyhow? You intend to use this as a monitor as opposed to hooking it up to a HDTV.
So long as you use a digitial interface HDMI, DVI, mini-displayport, etc. you are not going to loose any quality. It's digital. It either works or it doesn't. VGA, being analog, will of course be less quality.
I don't even know why you care about converting to HDMI when you could just convert mini-DVI to standard DVI and use a monitor that accepts standard DVI. They're plenty of those around.
Another consideration with a DVI interface is that if the monitor has a resolution greater than 1920 x 1200 you need a dual link DVI adapter as opposed to a single link DVI adapter.

How are you accessing Hotmail? Via your web browser? Are you using Apple Mail? Outlook?
The answer will be different depending on how you want to access Hotmail.
If you are using an email client (like Apple Mail, Outlook, Entourage, etc.)) then you need to set up a mail account in your email software.
The incoming Hotmail settings are these:
Incoming server: pop3.live.com
User name: Your full Hotmail email address (aka "me @ hotmail.com" or "me @ live.com")
Password: Your Hotmail password
POP port: 995
Use SSL to connect : yes
The outgoing Hotmail settings are:

hi, I am having a problem with importing my music cd's into iTunes when I put a cd into my cd drive. The wrong information about the music cd comes up iTunes thinks that I still have the cd in the drive that I imported before. all my other cd's import fine it is just a problem with this one disc. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this ?

I am having the same problems on multiple CD...i import 1...goes ok...then when I import the new CD it say "Would you like to import "name of CD I just imported"...can't get it to read the cd title correctly..just keeps throwing up the last CD. Reboot has no effect on this problem.
