Having both iMovie 08 and 06

Ok well I too liked iMovie 06 way better than 08 and I read on someone elses discussion that you could just go to application and get it by clicking on the folder that said: "previous iMove" or somthing like that, so I did that, but it won't let me open anything because: "The disk may be locked, read-only, or completely full. Try saving to a different location."
So I tried moving it arround and it did nothing.
Does anyone know what could be wrong?

so I did that, but it won't let me open anything because: "The disk may be locked, read-only, or completely full. Try saving to a different location."
Sounds like your HDD is either full, your read/write permissions need fixing, or someone has manually changed permissions. In the first case simply check the amount of available free space on your drive(s). In the second, run the "Disk Utility" to verify/repair disk permissions. If you manually changed permissions for some reason, then change them back.

  • Can I have both iMovie 09 and iMovie 08 installed on the same Mac?

    Hi,
This question may seem odd, but... I work at a college. In my role there, I provide training for students and faculty using a variety of technologies (including the iLife suite). I would like to purchase and install iLife 09 for my Mac for personal and professional use; however, I also need to maintain iLife 08 applications for training purposes for work. Is it possible to have both versions installed simultaneously?
    Thanks!

Yes, you can, although Apple does not support the methods shown below. Here's how you can do it:
_*If you have NOT installed the iLife09 upgrade yet......*_
    a) Open Finder & click on the "Applications folder"
    b) Click on the "New Folder" icon and name the folder anything you want (like iMovie08)
    c) drag the iMovie.app into the folder
    d) install iLife09....you will now be able to open iMovie09 by clicking on the icon in your dock, or open iMovie08 by going to the newly created folder and clicking on the older iMovie.app file.
_*If you have already installed iLife09........*_
    ----IMPORTANT----
*MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR MAC in case something goes wrong, such as a recent Time Machine backup so you can restore your files!!!! Also, make sure you have the original installation disks for both iLife08 and iLife09, or the OSX installation disks with iLife08 on it..........*
    a) Open Finder & click on "Macintosh HD", then open the "Library" folder, then open the "Receipts" folder
    b) Scroll down and find the files marked *iMovie.pkg, iMovie_712.pkg, iMovie_713.pkg, iMovie_714.pkg*, etc. You will not have all of those files, and the numbers may be different than 712 or 713, etc. Move these files to the Trash. *DO NOT MOVE iMovie_PreviousFolder.pkg or iMovieHD6.pkg to the Trash if you have them...keep them in the Receipts folder.*
    c) Open Finder & click on the "Applications" folder, then find iMovie.app and move it to the Trash
    d) Open Finder & click on the "Macintosh HD", then open the "Users" folder, then open your user folder (i.e., "Paul"), then open the "Library" folder, then open the "Preferences" folder, then move *com.apple.iMovie.plist, com.apple.iMovie7.plist and com.apple.iMovie8.plist* to the Trash. You may not have all of these files, or you may have different names for your preference files, but as a general rule, any preference files with the words iMovie should be moved to the trash.
    e) Put your iLife08 or OSX install disk 1 in your DVD drive
    f) Double-click on "iLife08.mpkg" (iLife08 install disk) or "Install Bundled Software only" (OSX install disk)
    g) When the "Install iLife08" or "Install Bundled Applications" window appears, click on continue for all the agreements until you get to the "Standard Install" screen. Click on "Customize" and a new screen will appear with a list of all the applications (iLife08) or the words "Bundled Applications" in the OSX install disk, and next to those words is a small arrow....click on that to show the contents of the installation software. Uncheck all boxes except iMovie. Make sure that box is checked, then click on "Install" and follow all prompts to install iMovie08 back to your Mac.
    h) Once iMovie08 is back in your Mac, you will need to move it to a new folder as follows:
    i) Open Finder & click on the "Applications" folder
    j) Click on the "New Folder" icon and name the folder anything you want (like iMovie08)
    k) drag the iMovie.app into the folder
    l) Now, reinstall iMovie09 as follows....
    m) Put your iLife09 install disk in your DVD drive
    n) Double-click on "iLife09.mpkg"
    o) When the "Install iLife09" window appears, click on continue for all the agreements until you get to the "Standard Install" screen. Click on "Customize" and a new screen will appear with a list of all the applications. Uncheck all boxes except iMovie. Make sure that box is checked, then click on "Install" and follow all prompts to install iMovie09 back to your Mac.
    p) You will now be able to open iMovie09 by clicking on the icon in your dock, or open iMovie08 by going to the newly created folder and clicking on the older iMovie.app file
    Hope this helps!

  • Can I have both imovie 4 and 6?

I have imovie 6 and it really stinks. I like the idvd but don't care much for imovie 6. I want to put back in my imovie 4. I have ilife 4 but tried to put it in but it didn't work.
    any thoughts?

    N.Z. Filmaker,
The technique Ryan describes here should also work for iMovie 4:

  • Can I have both iMovie HD and iMovie 11 on the same computer?

I need to have both verisions on my computer. Is this possible?
iMovie HD and iMovie 09 or 11

Yes. I have iMovie HD and iMovie 8.

  • Can I have both iMovie 11 and iMovie 6 on the same computer?

I like the ease and layout of the previous iMovie. In my mind, it's quicker and more precise. But, at the same time, there are some good features of iMovie 11 I also like. So, I was going to download iMovie 6.0.3 and just use both of them, but then I started worrying that if I installed it, it might mess up iMovie 11, or the installation simply might not work. The pop-up window told me it is supposed to automatically upgrade anyway. I want both of them on the same computer, is that possible? Is it okay to just download and install it?

The famous 'free' 6.03 was NO fully functional version of iMovie!
It was just a special update for those, who didn't like then new iMovie08 - which wasn't more than just a demo, imho. With appearance of iM09, v6.03 was pulled by Apple…-
You need a 'real' installer disk with an old version of iLIfe to install iMHD6.
There's no legal way to download an obsolete version of iMovie.-
iMHD6 and actual iM11 can co-exist on the same Mac.
Afair, you need MacOS 10.6 to install it…
Search this board … there are many people still using iMovie-a.

  • Having both PC Settings and Control Panel is unnecessary redundancy.

    Hi!
I keep getting into the Windows 8 type of PC Settings. And honestly, the PC settings is really lacking highly in substance. It is also very confusing to have both PC settings and control panel. Why not only use the control panel? It is waaaaaaay way more
    polished than the PC settings.
I feel like this is a bad decision.

Agreed. It's completely redundant and should be consolidated to one view. Preferably the control panel view. Dont try and fix what isn't broken.

  • How do I install both iMovies (06 and 08)

I have the necessary disc to install iLife 06 onto my new MacBook, but when I attempted last time to install iMovie 06 onto my MacBook, the other iMovie 08 disappeared. I don't want this to happen again, so is there any other setting I need to change to be able to install iMovie 06 without disturbing iMovie 08?

With iMovie 08 installed, download and install this software instead of installing the iLife 06 package.

  • Having both 802.11g and 802.11n devices on a new dual-band AEBS

Although I don't own a dual-band AEBS yet, I'm thinking I might be in the market for one. I just moved into a new apartment complex where the 2.4GHz frequency is saturated with over 30 wireless networks in range of my unit. I'm thinking that the 5GHz frequency would be much less crowded, and am thus considering getting a dual-band AEBS.
I have the following equipment on my home network:
1 Power Mac G5 (uses wired ethernet)
    2 MacBooks (use 802.11n)
    1 iPhone (uses 802.11g)
    1 PlayStation 3 (uses 802.11g)
My question is (and I keep finding conflicting information on this topic) will the iPhone and the PS3 slow down the MacBooks from 802.11n speed to 802.11g speed when they are connected to the dual-band AEBS? If so, can this be avoided by running 2 routers with two separate SSIDs (one in 802.11n only mode, and the other in 802.11g only mode)?
Sorry if this is a repeat question, but the fine print on Apple's product page says that the dual-band AEBS will be slowed down when a 802.11g device joins, but I have heard people say otherwise elsewhere.
    Thanks.

So with the new dual-band AEBS, it is possible to create two different SSIDs (one 5GHz 802.11n and one 2.4GHz 802.11g) and have those two networks seamlessly joined for file/printer sharing as well as both run at their maximum speeds.
To the best of my knowledge, being that I just got one a few days ago and haven't "experimented" fully yet, I believe the answer is yes to all counts. I'm sure if others have had the opportunity to check out all of the features that this new model has to offer, they will certainly chime in.

  • IMovie09/iMovie HD and Xacti HD - setup help please

I am not a video expert so be gentle with me!
I have a Xacti HD camera. After reading some bulletin boards I have now set this to record at HD-SHQ (1280x720 30fps), but I have lots of video shot previously at Full-HD (1920x1080 60field/s). I have copied all this 1080 video from the camera's card onto an external drive. I want to import it into iMovie09 or iMovieHD to edit and produce movies.
I have MPEG Streamclip and have set it up as advised in the useful YouTube video on importing Xacti footage. I open the mp4 clips in MPEG Streamclip and export to Quicktime using Apple Intermediate Codec 1280x720 (HDTV720p), which works fine.
iMovie09 can see and import the resulting .mov file - but the footage viewed in iMovie09 has noticeable lines, which I think is something to do with interlacing. I have tried the export process with the 'Deinterlace video' box checked and unchecked but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
I also have iMoveHD, which does seem to import the files without these lines, but it doesn't generate any thumbnails. It's hard to edit when the clips are just black (though they show very well in the main window).
I would be so grateful if someone could advise me in simple terms as to the best setup to get my Xacti footage into one of these two apps so that I can have fun making movies instead of spending hours trying to understand the world of codecs!
Hopefully this advice will help all those out there with Xactis and Macs, which must be many hundreds if not thousands by now.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, I have an Xacti camera as well, but mine only shoots in 720p, so I don't know anything about the interlacing stuff. But I was wondering, why are you using another program to convert your files? Both iMovie '09 and iMovie HD can import .mp4 files, and iMovie '09 just plays the video as is (i.e. without converting it or anything).
Although I have heard that iMovie '09 is having a problem with interlaced video, but I'm not sure on the details on that.

  • IMovie 10 and DV Video Quality

Does anyone know how iMovie handles DV?  Previous versions used Single Field Processing, which threw away every other line of the video.  This resulted in very degraded video quality upon export, especially if exporting to a DVD.
I doubt very seriously that this was fixed in the new iMovie, but it’s worth asking.

    Some additional info.
A 1920x1080 black and white test image was created. The image consists of 120x120 pixel squares. The first two squares in each direction contain 60 black and 60 white lines, i.e. lines with a width of one pixel. The next two squares contain 30 black and 30 white lines, i.e. lines with a width of two pixels. The source image is located here: http://i.imgur.com/AFkrw6L.png
This image was copied 200 times into a numbered sequence. The image sequence was made into a short movie using QuickTime Pro 7. Two versions of that movie were exported: a 25p and a 50i (interlaced) version. Both short movies were imported in iMovie 9.0.9 and iMovie 10.0.1. A text effect was added to add some movement to the movies. The movies were exported to 1080p format via the Share option in iMovie. iMovie 9 exports to .mov files, iMovie 10 exports to .mp4 files.
What can be seen from these 4 exported movies? Both iMovie 9 and iMovie 10 handle progressive video without dropping lines. The full resolution is preserved. iMovie 10 also handles interlaced video without dropping lines. But iMovie 9 (=iMovie '11) and older (since iMovie '8) do not handle interlaced video correctly. Half of the horizontal lines are discarded ("single-field processing"). Also in the horizontal direction resolution is lost; each pair of two horizontal pixels is averaged. Thus a scaled down resolution of 960x540 pixels is used for processing interlaced video in iMovie 9 (and older). This can be seen in the iMovie 9.0.9 50i Test movie. The upper left square is white; the black lines are discarded! The second square is gray; horizontally each pair of two pixels is averaged.

  • I want to compare iMovie '06 and iMovie '08

I will buy a new Intel iMac when it comes with Leopard, and will then of course have iLife '08 installed. After reading a lot of reviews of iMovie '08 and several video reviews on YouTube and hearing all the complaints about a lack of editing power in '08, I am considering getting my years old video clips and experimenting with both iMovie '06 and iMovie '08 ie, using the same clips, make a movie with iMovie '06 and iMovie '08 and end up with two movies.
I want to see which I like more. Will I like the ease of iMovie '08? Or will I start to wish I could edit my clips not just at the begining and end, but in the middle? I won't miss all those special effects or even the transitions, actually..
I figure if I make a copy of the clips I will then have two sets of the same clips. Set A for movie making with iMovie '06 and Set B for movie making with iMovie '08. Then I can play the movies and see which I like better.
Please tell me if this is all it would take to do what I am thinking about. If I work on iMovie '08, the iMovie '06 should stay untouched and unchanged by iMovie '08. This is possible, right??? I am assuming yes. But must I do something on my side to assure that the movies stay separate and '06 doesn't get subsumed by '08?
    — Lorna in Southern California

I think iMovie 08 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
I use both iMovie 08 and 06 depending on what I'm trying to do, each has its strengths.
I use iMovie 06 (with iDVD 08) if I think I will ever put the movie on a DVD. When you're ready to make a DVD just share to iDVD 08, unlike iMovie 08, iMovie 06 has "Share to iDVD" _built in!_ iMovie 06 has Chapter marking built-in also, a few clicks and you have Chapters and sharing with iDVD.
Remember that Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

After I updated to yosemite my iMovie will not open.  I have found the folders in the applications folder for both versions 9 and 10 but neither one opens when I double click on the icon.  How do I remedy this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Hi, I am having trouble getting an album to download. I have tried it on both my iPhone and laptop through iTunes but neither works. I am wondering if it could be the size of the album stopping it downloading (212 Tracks) Any Ideas?

These alerts occur due to timeouts or conflicts trying to write a file during download.
If you encounter this issue while while downloading something from the iTunes Store:
Delete your iTunes Downloads folder, located in:
    Mac OS X:
~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Downloads   Note: "iTunes Media" may appear as "iTunes Music. Also, the tilde (~)  refers to your Home directory.
After locating your iTunes Downloads folder:
    Quit iTunes.
Delete the Downloads folder on your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Choose Store > Check for Available Downloads.
Enter your account name and password.

  • How to Search for a Date in a string having both characters and date

    Hi ,
I have a requirement to search DATE in the String having Both Characters and DATE . Please kindly let me know as early as possible.
    Regards
    Anil Kumar K

Try to use SEARCH command with the pattern, making the pattern as fine as it can, like if you have your date in the format 02/23/2007, you can give
SEARCH STRING FOR ' //'. (assuming the date has at least a single blank before it)
    WRITE:  SY-SUBRC UNDER 'SY-SUBRC',
    SY-FDPOS UNDER 'SY-FDPOS'.
SY-FDPOS is set to offset of the string from which you can get the date value
