Having deleting problems

Hi all,
Just got my first Mac a few weeks ago...woo
So I've been trying to figure out this iPhoto stuff... I transferred all my photos from my old computer into the 'pictures' folder in my users folder, and then imported that entire folder into iPhoto. That was all good, but now as I'm going through and deleting images I don't want anymore from iPhoto I also want them to be permanently deleted from my HD. I've tried both setting the preferences -> advanced option to copy and to NOT copy and that doesn't seem to make a difference. And YES I did empty the trash in iPhoto... that doesn't seem to do much either. Anyone have an answer? Could it have something to do with where I've placed the files on my HD?

I've tried both setting the preferences -> advanced option to copy and to NOT copy and that doesn't seem to make a difference.
This does make a GIANT difference and probably is the cause of your problems. It is strongly suggested that you leave this option checked (the default) and use a managed library (having it unchecked gives you a referenced library which will create untold problems for you as time goes one and probably is the cause of the problem you are having)
Do you still have the originals of all the photos? If you do my suggestion is that you start over as follows:
1 - quit iPhoto
2 - delete the iPhoto preference file to put you back to all default settings (finder ==> "your username" ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iphoto.plist)
3 - verify that you have originals of all the photos you wish to have in iPhoto somewhere other that in the iPhoto library
4 - drag the iPhoto library out of the pictures folder to the trash (this will delete all the photos in iPhoto)
5 - launch iPhoto (this will generate a new default preference file and an empty iPhoto library
6 - set the iPhoto event preferences how you want them - I would suggest checking the box to auto split items imported from the finder in this case UNLESS you have an existing folder structure that you want to maintain) but do not change the "copy items to the iPhoto library option" - leave it checked
7 - drag the folder of photos (or select them all and drag the group) onto the iPhoto icon in the dock
Now you will have a good and un-confusing iPhoto library - when you delete photos from it and empty the iPhoto trash (iPhoto menu ==> empty trash) the photos will be gone totally form iPhoto (they still will exist anywhere else that they are including where you put the originals in the pictures folder)
Be sure you never make any changed in the iPhoto library directly - always use iPhoto to manage your photos

I am having consistant problems w/ my mb pro freezing for 20-60 seconds while working in different programs and apps. i've upgraded my RAM to 8gigs and deleted over 60 gig of pics and videos to try to help, but nothing seems to work.

I've now been having this problem for months. It just freezes up and either shows me the dumb color wheel or doesn't show me anything sometimes and i just cant do anything for about 20-60 seconds. i can't exposae or anything. Also while working on a power point presentation it froze 4 different times for good and i had to do a hard restart just to get it working again. i lost my work and had to keep starting over. it was so annoying. it seems most of the time it does it, it is while i'm in Excel, Outlook, or Powerpoint. so perhaps it has something to do with my microsoft office. but i have the newest version and all the updates and everything. and i believe its happened when doing other tasks too. So i just can't figure it out.
A few Mac friends suggested i free up some space on my hard drive and upgrade my RAM. So i did. i put all my videos and photos on an external harddrive and deleted them all on my computer. i also upgraded to 8 gigs of RAM.
And honestly i can't even tell a difference after doing both of these.
HELP! PLEASE HELP! I'M ABOUT TO GO CRAZY. And having all the non Mac believers telling me it cause i have a Mac even drives me more nuts..

it froze a few times over the last hour and half while browsing the internet.
and also while working in excel it all of the sudden shut down excel and said. "Excel has encountered and problem and needs to shut down, you may lose the work you were on." or something like that. THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME TOO. Excel, outlook and powerpoint frequently just shut down on me out of now where. I've bolded and underlined when this happened.

You may have debris in your headphone jack blocking the sensor. Try blowing hard on the jack, and inserting/removing your headphones quickly multiple times to clear it.

I am having a problem with email, when I delete messages from my Ipad, they come back into trash whether they are on my PC or not. The only way I can delete them is to to my providers site and delete everything there.

I am having a problem with email. I can receive and send, but when I delete, the deleted messages return into either Trash or Bin or both whether or not I have deleted them from my PC.
The only way I can get rid of them permanently, is to go into my area of my providers site(Sky) and empty all of the boxes there. I imagine it's a setting, please advise.

Once you open the files in the new version you can't open them in the old version. Pick one version to use (have to be 9 now as you already have converted files)

If your are syncing from a computer and iTunes you can go to the apps section and select which apps you want to go back onto your device when you sync it.

delete mailbox - how else do you propose to do that. Unless by "deleting mailbox" you mean something else.

Having mail problem very slow opening, deleting, unable to move to folders

Have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac OS X Ver. 10.6.8 - Having AppleMail problems: very very very slow opening any new incoming mail, can't delete, can't assign to Spam, and can't move to any folder for storing, and can't empty trash. Seems to be corrupted and might need to reload the Mail Program (Version 4.6) and need to know if I can reload the mail program and if I did would I lose all the data stored in folders? I don't know how to reload the Mail program. Also the entire computer seems to be slow to react as well but mail is worse. I've checked and emptied caches for the browsers I use. Connecting to Internet all right but as I said, slow to react. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

MichelPM, I don’t know how to find out how full is my Mail app. I confess to being mostly an ignoramus about computer hardware, software, applications storage and usage. I know where to look for some stuff, but I don’t know what all the information means. I found the page under About this Mac Serial-ATA that gives the following info: Macintosh HD:

Then under Memory Slot there are two banks in Bank 0 all categories are empty but Bank 1 says

I usually have three browsers open and one to two wordprocessers (Word and TextEdit), the resident Dictionary. When needed but closed when done with the current activity are Preview, Adobe Reader. I do have a lot of documents on the desktop and filed in folders are uncountable. I could commit most of these to flashdrives if I have to, but I’m not sure how to save all the stuff I have in folders in the Mail app. I do not run any antivirus or “crapware” software that I can find in the MacHD applications folder. I’ve never downloaded such programs. I will commence to copy to external drives data I wish to preserve. Can I copy the entire mail set of archive folders to an external hard drive? I have a La Cie.

I did read (yesterday in another thread) about a similar problem. I cannot test it myself as I accept cookies (from sites I visit) and do not want to delete all of mine for a test.
I do not know whether it meets your requirements, but you could turn on private browsing. I use that (or Microsoft's variant on IE) when I use public computers.

Every time I try to close out Firefox, it locks up and won't shut down unless I contol-alt-delete. I recently downloaded the latest version, but I was having the problem prior, although intermittantly. What to do?

I use Windows Vista as my OS.
I can navigate from window to window in firefox, or navigate between pages on a website OK, and I can close out windows until I get to the last one, and then it doesn't respond. I don't get a message that it isn't responding, it just sits there and won't close.
I'm not having this problem if I use windows explorer, but it keeps not responding while I'm browsing, so thats just as frustrating.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Can you detect any pattern to it, whether related to messages with attachments, or particular advertising on the page, etc.?
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
1. Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
(Usually the dialog will refer to live.com rather than hotmail.com, that's normal.)
Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

When i try to open document library from SharePoint Production portal then it throws the specified error. However, when i open document library from SharePoint Development portal then it opens it in file explorer quite easily.
Production portal is on https whereas development portal is on http. Also, UAG has been configured on production portal.
Any idea where it's getting stuck up? Surely, this is not a browser issue on Windows 7 as it's opening the development portal's document library on the same machine.
I've also done following things:
- Configured Desktop Experience on production environment
- Installed the hotfix for Windows 7

Having a Problem Backing Up Paid For Apps on iPhone to iTunes

Hi, I am having a problem finding out how to back up/sync the Apps I have purchased on my iPhone and have on my iPhone BUT did not purchase in iTunes nor do I have them in iTunes.
Basically, I did not purchase these apps on/in/through iTunes. I got them all while I was on my iPhone. Therefore they are not in iTunes or backed up anywhere else for that matter. And now I want to back them up somehow or "sync" them in iTunes if that is what your suppose to do.
BUT.......
Every time I try to "sync apps" or any other choice in iTunes while my iPhone is synced up it gives me the message that it will be deleting all the paid for apps on my iPhone and replacing them with the apps currently in iTunes (which is zero !) I am smart enough to know NOT to do that and learned my lesson several times with photos, and music how completely stupid and irrational the "syncing" process is with iTunes and the iPhone and how it makes no sense. (as in, why is it not just like a hard drive ? Drag and drop files to and fro your computer and iPhone that you want backed up or on or off your iPhone, etc..) ? What is with this LAME, stupid, completely convoluted "Sync" idea ? I know several people that constantly lose their contacts, photos, music, calendars, etc.. ALL because the iPhone and COmputer does not act like a normal Hard Drive.... I mean, what is Apple thinking ? Get rid of "Sync" man, its unneeded.
ANYWAY, enough of the rant - So I ask --- HOW do you back up your paid for apps if they are currently on your iPhone, but not in iTunes ? I have searched and searched and nothing is available to do so in iTunes.. what gives ? Surely there has to be a way, but of course is worded wrong with a horrible "action name" maybe ? Restore ? IDK, please help.
On a 16GB iPhone 4 (not the new ones), and running iOS 4.3.5. Latest version of iTunes.

Although, this particular time all I was trying to do was back up/sync/transfer the Apps I did purchase on my account. I was not intending on doing that for the Apps that came with the iPhone. I figure those will always be there after every update anyway right ? So no need to back them up.
