Having issues configuring DHCP and with Redundant router
Hello everyone
I am new to Cisco and I am having few problems in configuring my topology in Packet tracer.
I am having redundancy in router and swithes both,
I have assigned one layer2 2960 switch as a VTP server and asssigned VLANs from that switch then assigned ports to the hosts in access layer switches.
Problem 1: If I take my Router1 off I am unable to ping so the pupose of having redundant router does not serve the pupose.
Problem 2 : I need to assign DHCP server for the users who will be connecting wirelessly with Access Points, so can I configure DHCP on Access Points which I am unable to do so in Packet tracer any idea how? / Or shall I configure the DHCP on Router1 and Router2 and exclude the addresses I have assigned to all the hosts connected using ethernet.
Also how can I configure Email server in this tolpolgy and where?
Thank you
A.K
Hi Asif, Jeff is right.
(1) You need to configure either HSRP (Hot standby routing protocol) or VRRP (Wirtual routing redundancy protocol), or GLBP (Gateway load balancing protocol).
With either of this config, you will be able to configure 1 logical IP address, which will act as a gateway on your computers. However, both routers will need different IP's (all within the same subnet). You will also need to create multiple HSRP groups to support all your VLAN's. So one HSRP group per VLAN. The logical IP in the HSRP group will act as the default gateway on computers within the VLAN.
Though I don't think packet tracer supports any of the above configs - FYI it's part of the CCNP Switch sylabus. So the above explaination will make sense after you've got a good understanding of HSRP, VRRP and/or GLBP.
(2) I would recommend setting both the Router as a DHCP server, and configure the Access Point (AP) with a static IP (disable NAT and DHCP on the AP)
(3) In packet tracer, choose the Server icon and check it's properties. You should find an option to enable EMAIL server. Connect it to any of the Distribution layer switches.
Hope this helps get you started on the learning curve :-)

I already have an Airport Extreme that works great. Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?
Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?
Yes, you have two options here, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Option 1...connect the Time Capsule to your AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable connection. Turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule since your AirPort Extreme is already providing wireless.
Advantages...easy to configure, you can backup either over wireless or plug directly into one of the Ethernet ports to backup large files 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Disadvantages...none, except it requires a wired Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme.
Option 2....configure the Time Capsule as a wireless only hard drive.
Advantage.....you can locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want as long as it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
Disadvantages....harder to configure, backups will occur only over wireless. -
Having issues receiving MMS and/or media content. I have visited several forums and did successfully receive at least one photo and sent one photo sucessfully. However, I am now unable to receive media via MMS. Phone displays message: "Get Media Content Now 30KB", but it only emits a tone after pressing. I have add a MMS VPN already. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

Problem in configuring IPv6 interface with default Router lifetime.
I'm facing Problem in configuring IPv6 interface with default
Router lifetime through a router advertisement.
I'm also see an unusual behavior that even after configuring accept_rtadv=0,
the ipv6 address is configured.
Please help in out .Mac OS 9 does not support IPv6. While you can have IPv6 on your network, a Macintosh running Mac OS 9.2.2 or earlier cannot make connections to services using this network protocol.
To use IPv6 on a Macintosh, you need Mac OS X 10.1 or later (as far as I know).

I am a developer getting started with Solaris 10 configuration. I recently installed Solaris 10 and have run into an issue with network connectivity.
I have done much research on this and I was able to get communiction to the internet established once, but the settings were lost on reboot.
Overview - The Solaris box is connected to a router which is acting as a DHCP server.
AMD 64 dual 2.6
nForce4+ integrated NIC
1) I am not able to obtain an address from the router. Nor do I get a respons back when I ping it. I get an IP etc if I boot into Windows so phyicial connectivity is fine.
2) Upon reboot the device nfo0 as shown using ifconfig -a has an IP of 0.0.0.0.
3) If I run ifconfig [hostname] my machine gets the ip from the hosts file, but I would like to obtain this from the router.
4) NOTE - the machine shows as active on my router, but the Solaris box cannot be reached from other computers on the networ, nor do I get a reply back when pinging the router from the Solaris box.
GOAL - reach and obtain a DHCP from the router and have the changes stick upon reboot.
/etc/hosts contents
127.0.0.1 localhost loghost
192.168.1.55 solarisX /*<-- this is what I get when I do ifconfig nfo0 solarisX */
/etc/hosname.nfo0
netmask + 255.255.255.0
solarisX
/etc/defaultrouter
192.168.1.254
/et c/netmasks
192.168.0.0 255.255.2550
Specific Steps taken:
Using the driver nfo-2.4.5 locate at http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/ I did the following.
% cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
% rm obj Makefile
% ln -s Makefile.${KARCH}_${COMPILER} Makefile
% ln -s ${KARCH} obj
where ${KARCH} is the result of `isainfo -n`, and ${COMPILER} is
"gcc" or "suncc" which you want to use to make the driver.
4. Testing
Testing before installation is strongly recommended.
# cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
# /usr/ccs/bin/make install
# ./adddrv.sh
# /usr/ccs/bin/make uninstall (for solaris7, don't remove the file )
# modload obj/nfo
# devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r )
# ifconfig nfoN plumb ( where N is an instance number, typcally 0 for first card)
# ifconfig -a ( you will see an entry for nfoN)
# ifconfig nfoN YOUR-HOST-NAME
# ifconfig nfoN ( ensure IP address is correct)
# ifconfig nfoN up ( and then you can test with ping, telnet, ftp ...)
5. Installation
After you ensure that the nfo driver is fully functional, install it.
(1) copy the nfo driver into the kernel directory
# cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
# /usr/ccs/bin/make install
If you do not test the nfo driver yet, execute the following commands:
# ./adddrv.sh
# devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r)
(2) Configure the network interface. Create and/or modify the following file:
/etc/hostname.nfoN
(3) Reboot the system.
# init 6
Edited by: hedger on Nov 16, 2007 11:17 PMThanks Alan. I worked on trying to get the NIC working again last night. I had it working once, although the settings did not perist. I can still get the device to load, but I can't communciate with the router (it's not physical because another OS can reach it.
I took your advice and tried the sys-unconfig. But I did not have much success.
I am wondering if plopping in a new PCI NIC would be the most efficient route to get the server up.
What kind of NIC do you utilize and have had success with?
I am looking at possibly a DLINK DFE-530 or NetGear FA-311. I don't need wireless at this point just a rock solid DEV box.
Thanks again for the previous info.

DHCP loadsharing with redundant Guest Anchor Controllers
Hi
I have 2 x Redundant Guest Anchor Controllers (5508) located in 2 separate Data Centres with all the management and guest user VLAN spanned between two. Everything is working fine with the Guest WiFi access except the DHCP functionality as the Controllers are acting themselves as the internal DHCP Servers.
This is how I tried to distribute
network. 10.1.0.0/23
gateway: 10.1.1.254
Controller 1, DHCP Server pool: 10.1.0.2 - 10.1.0.254 Gw: 10.1.1.254
Controller 2, DHCP Server pool: 10.1.1.2 - 10.1.1.254 Gw: 10.1.1.254
As the user loadbalancing between the Anchor Controllers cannot be controlled (i.e. they are active/active), the same client sometime getting 2 different IP addresses from both the Controllers (as they do not talk to each other in terms of DHCP) hence depleting the pool addresses.
I guess one way of solving this is to just run 1 DHCP server in one of the controllers but that defeats the purpose of having N+1 Controllers. Is there a better way of doing the DHCP loadbalancing and having full redundancy at the same time?
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
RegardsThanks Scott, I understand that it's quite obvious to get an external DHCP Server, unfortunately it's not an option for us The weired thing is, it seems when a client joins the guest WiFi, both the Anchor Controllers (both functioning as DHCP servers with mutually exclusive IP Address space) are providing IP addresses. While the client accepts only one the other Controller still reserves the IP address unused and hence depleting the DHCP Pool.
I thought for load balancing (in the very beginning) the Foreign controller will forward the DHCP request to only one of tthe Anchor Controllers, but in reality it's forwarding it to both. I have tested this with only one test AP, so mobility doesn't seem to be an issue here. Any thoughts? -

Having issue uploading,viewing and editing using PSE7 & 12
Hello there!!
So I was having issues with photos uploading, not uploading into my PSE7, so once it wouldn't upload anymore, I thought okay, maybe it's the program, it's too old or whatnot. So I bought and downloaded PSE12 *which I really wanted anyway* and I am still having the same issue. I am totally at a loss here, and I need my program to work to do editing and design work. SO I hope that someone can help me with this issue.
Things I am having issues with:
When trying to upload picture from PSE, it dosen't show up, but it shows as a recently edited file.
When right clicking on image and then opening using PSE, the program opens, but the photo dosen't.
I can't drop and drag my images in any folders, as I used to be able to.
Can anyone assist me with this issue. I feel it might be deeper than the photo editing program. Thanks!!
JessOkay here is the copied and pasted info: However, I've ran every test imaginable and it says that everything is okay and good to go and no updates are needed.

Airport express error (Muted) with youtube, shoutcast and with tplink router
Hi!
My problem is:
I have an airport express 802.1g
Its wired to a tplink router . The airport's wifi is disabled.
1. Iam playing a youtube video. When its finised and i would like watch another one, the sound is not working anymore util i reboot the airport.
2. similar with shoutcast. If the stream disconnect, after reconnect there is no sound on speakers.
Iam using a tplink router and my ipad /iphone is connecting to the router's wifi. The router is wired to airport express.
Thanks for help:
KavicsUnfortunately, if you are trying to use the Express to extend the Sitecom router's signal...using wireless only....the Express is very likely not compatible for that purpose.
The Express can extend a signal from another Apple router....but it would be extremely unlikely that this would work with a router from another manufacturer.
If you have tried this a number of times and always get an error message....I am afraid that you have your answer. -

How to DHCP Server with NO ROUTER on Server Admin panel field?
Hi all!
I'm having a little problem.
I have two completely different networks, with different purposes, one is 10.0.10.X and the other is 192.168.10.X. My networks is like this:
Internet------Wifi Router (192.168.10.250) -----iMacs AirPoirt (192.168.10.X)
MacPro (10.0.10.100)-----iMacs Ethernet (10.0.10.X)
Great, is so simple. So I had a DHCP server (Windows blerg) on the 10.0.10.X (NOT MAC OS X SERVER) and everything works perfect, since on the Windows DHCP Server I'm not forced to fill the router/gateway and leaving it blank makes the iMacs have just one router/gateway from the 192.168.10.X lease from the Wifi Router.
Now I'm planning to migrate the DHCP Service to the Mac OS X Server (Snow Leopard Server), I fiddled a bit and found that I can't use DHCP Server on Mac OS Server leaving router field blank and if I type ANYTHING, my iMacs will NOT access the internet through 192.162.10.X since now there's two gateways (from 10.0.10.X that Server Admin panel forced me to fill and from 192.168.10.X that HAS to have one gateway and it's the correct one).
I've tried to fill with the 192.168.10.X gateway but throws a warning saying that is not on the same subnet.
I really don't want to re-route or mix the traffic for many reasons.
So I ask, is there any possible way to NOT fill or bypass or do anything to make DHCP Server service from Mac OS X Server not have a gateway/router?
The only way I'm managing to do it now is to use manually entered IPs on the iMacs, but it's 10 iMacs and I guess for some services like netboot etc I need DHCP.
Cheers,Lets assume that before you had computers with both Ethernet and WiFi connections, they were able to access the Internet via WiFi and talk amongst themselves via Ethernet. The Ethernet addresses were not (in theory) accessible from the WiFi network and hence not accessible from the Internet. Presumably you intended this for security reasons.
If so, you were completely mistaken. Even if you turned on a Software firewall on each of these iMacs to in theory block traffic going between the two networks you still have a potentially insecure setup. This is because traffic can reach the iMacs via WiFi. Once hypothetical malicious traffic has invaded an iMac via WiFi it can take control over the computer and within that computer reach out via its Ethernet port to other Ethernet computers.
The only way to ensure complete security is not to have any link between the two networks at all. If one of the computers is linked to both then you have a potential path for attacks to travel across.
So what are you really trying to do? If you want two totally separate networks with one having absolutely no link to the outside world then this is simple and is as follows.
NETWORK1 Internet------Wifi Router (192.168.10.250) -----iMacs AirPoirt (192.168.10.X)
NETWORK2 MacPro (10.0.10.100)-----different iMacs Ethernet (10.0.10.X) with WiFi turned off
You could define the default gateway for NETWORK2 as being the DHCP server itself. No computer on NETWORK2 would be able to access the Internet and hence it would be totally secure.
If however you want all computers to be able to access the Internet then you need a link between them. Are you merely wanting to segregate WiFi traffic as it might be insecure and evesdropped on? If so then the following is a better approach
WiFi clients (192.168.10.x)
Internet ----- AirPort Extreme (192.168.10.250) ------ Hardware FireWall does NAT (10.0.10.1) ---- MacPro (10.0.10.100) ---- iMacs via Ethernet (10.0.10.x)
The WiFi clients would not be able to directly access your 10.0.10.x network as they are blocked by the FireWall. However if you have say a Laptop that you want ot use on WiFi but still access your server on your internal secure LAN you would do this by having the server run the VPN server component. The WiFi client would then connect via the VPN server and this would ensure all the network traffic going over the WiFi is encrypted using industry standard IPSec encryption. In this second scenario the MacPro (presumably your server) would have the FireWall as the default gateway, and the FireWall would have the Internet router as its default gateway. You could set the Firewall to forward VPN traffic to the server or use the second Ethernet port on the server to accept VPN traffic on the 192.168.10.x LAN.
This is my own setup is something like
AirPort
|
Internet router --- Public IP range --- (WAN) FireWall (LAN) --- LAN Switch --- Server Port1 for normal traffic
|(DMZ) |
+----------------------------- Server Port2 for VPN -
I am having problems configuring airport express with time capsule
Hi,
I am having problems setting up airport express (old version) with time capsule. It was working perfectly fine with my old router, Airport Extreme (b/g).
I have tried to reset the Airport Express, and now I am having problems finding it in my personal networks. Not too sure what exactly is going on, other than it was working less than a day ago, and now I can't even locate it on the network to configure.
Anyone have any suggestions? I have already tried a hard reset, and no luck so far. There are 3 types of resets.
1. Soft
2. Hard
3. Factory
Try a factory reset.

Sending mail issues from personal account with bt router
Please can anyone help? I have a personal email address which mails fine from my ipad and iphone but since changing to a BT router it won't mail from my macbook pro despite the other devices working fine!
BT won't help and say they don't support 3rd party emails which I never knew - now I'm stuck with them for 18 mnths!
Is it a firewall issue on the Macbook pro? I had a friend try to set up Thunderbird on my macbook pro with the personal address and again it received mails fine but wouldn't send - just gives the same error message saying it couldn't connect to the SMTP server...
Please does anyone have any suggestions as I can now received and read work based messages on my macbook pro but have to respond from ipad or iphone :-(
Thank you for any advice anyone can offer...I have experienced the same problems. I could receive but not send email through a third party email. Our ISP is BT and it would appear even though they wont admit it that they have changed some peoples settings.
I spoke with my email provider 123-reg and they asked me to check my ISP and then check the SPAMHAUS and our ISP has been Blocklisted. I called BT and they wouldnt answer why this had happened.
To cut a long story short I have had to pay BT £30 (not happy) to resolve the problem. They set my SMTP details as mail.btinternet.com and i had to authenticate this by logging into a BT/Yahoo email account that we never use., go to options then mail options then mail accounts and add details for the account your having problems with. You should then receive an email link on your third party email address.
I have actually complained to OFCOM about this as I dont believe that I should have to pay to rectify a problem that I havent caused. All BT would say is that they fixed the problem and I have to pay the £30. they wouldnt answer why I couldnt send emails prior to this fix. I asked why I now have to have the SMTP as mail.btinternet.com and again they couldnt answer this.
I hope this helps -
If you are having issues connecting to wifi with your Ipad, READ THIS
My son recently could not connect to the home wifi. After almost a year of having no issues, it came on overnight sort-of-speaking. I spent over three hours doing all the resets and tried anything that was talked about online. This could be your issue too. WHEN YOU SET UP YOUR ROUTER, IT WILL HAVE A PASSCODE/PASSWORD/PASSPHRASE (different routers may call it differently), this is usually a series of letters and numbers. YOU WILL ALSO SET UP A PASSWORD TO ACCESS YOUR HOME NETWORK FROM ANY OF YOUR DEVICES. THE TWO ARE VERY DIFFERENT, THE PASSWORD THAT THE IPAD WANTS IS NOT THE NETWORK PASSWORD, IT IS THE PASSWORD OF THE ROUTER.
This makes no sense to me, but it worded. I have a CISCO router and Mercury Net for an Internet provider. As I was working on getting my issue solved, I ran across a post that said this same thing about a different router and provider, so I thought why not try it, nothing to lose. IF IT WORKED FOR TWO DIFFERENT ROUTERS AND PROVIDERS, THIS COULD BE YOUR PROBLEM AS WELL.
To start with, I did not know the passphrase to my roouter. I reset the router to factory default and followed a few steps for security and other things. Along the reset, there was a page that showed the passphrase. If you do not have your router passphrase, this may be your best bet. I am by no means a professional when it comes to computers, but I am not affraid to try a few things when needed. This was not too hard and it will not be for you either.
Good Luck
If you need more information, let me know, I will try to help.
Thanks for readingI'm glad you had luck with this. I have the same issue, and i've replaced the droid turbo 4 times. I've tried it on 4 or 5 different wifi networks and it doesn't give me any type of speed at all.
