Having multiple issues with my MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro that I purchases new January 2013. I upgraded from Mountain to Maverick about 2 months ago, with no problems.
About 3 days ago it started acting up. It started with my not being able to open Safari, although a few hours later I could, but then the next day and since I have not been able to again. I am unable to open several other programs, such as any adobe (illustrator, photoshop, InDesign, etc.). My anti-virus program is responding (I use Web Root). The speed has drastically reduced, as well... very sluggish, which I suppose is not surprising.
I, also, am not able to restart or shutdown properly. Last night I forced a shutdown because absolutely nothing was opening. Today, I was atleast able to open Finder and other basics, such as Reminder. However, I just went to see what other's I may be able to open and now just Finder will. I cannot give specs because boxes will not stay open. They just open for about half a second.
I apologize if I am all over the place. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks!
PS. I believe the reason the few things that would open before are only flashing for half a second is because it is still trying to shutdown. When I tried to force a shutdown, it said that it is already shutting down, which it's been doing for about an hour now.

Unfortunately, I think that the fact that you mentioned the presence of anti-virus software has dragged this discussion a bit off course. As you say that WebRoot has been installed for a year, while the problem just started recently (and not right after upgrading to Mavericks), I don't believe that the anti-virus software has anything to do with it.
As for what the problem might be, my best guess for something with such a sudden and unexplainable onset is a dying hard drive. Do you have backups of your data? If not, that could become a very serious problem. First priority needs to be figuring out a way to back up your data.
Once your data is backed up, check the hard drive's SMART status:
If it checks out fine (ie, says "Verified"), try repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility.

  • Multiple Issues with my Macbook Pro

Jan 2011- Received my Macbook Pro 15 inch (late 2011 version)
Feb 2011- Overheating issue, laptop started running very slowly without any applications open
Feb 2011- Sent it to Apple US, test was run, no issue found by Apple, they re-installed the OS, piece returned back, seemed to be running normally
Early 2012- Major battery issue, battery would suddenly drop down from 90% to 25% in 5 minutes with hardly any applications open
From late 2012 to present- When the laptop is put to sleep (with screen closed) and is opened after half an hour or longer, the mouse cursor remains stuck on the screen after waking it up. The only way to continue using the laptop is to restart it so that the mouse starts moving again. Every time the laptop is woken up after sleep mode, the speed of all running applications comes down noticeably.
Mid 2013- Replaced the Battery for Rs. 8000/- After using it just for two years
Late 2013- Laptop fan runs at a high speed even though there are no applications open on the system, suspected Temperature sensor issue, Activity monitor shows a particular kernel that is taking up a huge amount of CPU load.
I have only faced issues with my macbook pro and it still doesn't end,Is there any way I can ask for an out of warranty replacement or atleast if there is a permanent solution at an affordable cost? Apple as a brand has set a benchmark , it is only fitting that as loyal apple customers we expect products to exceed expectations in terms of performance and longeivity and not pose as a problem at every turn. There isn't any sense in going on spending on a laptop that costs a bomb already!!!

While you were on the warranty or if you still have it, you should check out the Apple Store. When you had noticed these problems earlier, you should have immediatly reacted upon them, rather than waiting.

. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop

  • I am having an issue with my MacBook Pro. My Wi-Fi no longer connects automatically so I have to join my home network every time I start my computer.

My home network is at the top of my preferred network list. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

It may depend on the plugin that is loaded into your browser. However, right click on a PDF and select the Open With option and go to the default button to select Acrobat as the default. That might do it.

  • Has anyone else been having hard drive issues with 13" MacBook Pro barely a year old?

Has anyone else been having hard drive issues with 13" MacBook Pro barely a year old?

    Yes, BUT...
... there are many problems that are really easy to eliminate by replacing the Hard drive, including ones that have nothing to do with actual Drive Hardware failure. These include corrupted install of Mac OS X, its EFI partition, clobbered partition tables, or the appearance of Bad Blocks in a critical area.
Any of these problems can sometimes be eliminated by re-initializing the entire drive and writing Zeroes, and re-installing from scratch. The trouble is, this process takes hours to complete, and is not guaranteed to be successful -- you may still need a new drive after all that effort.
I learned from my Plumber that consumers have no appetite for solutions that might work, and detest return visits for any related problems whatsoever. You or your friend may have had your drive replaced, not because it actually failed, but because the situation was troublesome, and the provider thought you would not tolerate anything less than a crisp, complete fix on the first attempt. And based on the cost of technician time, it may have even been cheaper that way.

What do you mean "Leave them my laptop again"? do you mean you have had it worked on before? for the same problem or a different one?
You need to take it in to Apple ASAP. No matter how long they have it, you want it fixed and fixed correctly.

This sounds like an error in Time Zone support. The time zone needs to be the same in Outlook as well as the phone.

  • I'm having frequent RSDs with my MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo Model A1150.

I'm having frequent RSDs with my MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo Model A1150. Checked inside for dust around fans, etc., but none was visible. Laptop gets very warm, more so on the left side than right. Any suggestions for finding the problem & solutions?

    Using Apple Hardware Test
    Kelley Computing - Rember
But it's covered by Apple's warranty - if you ask, they should erase & reinstall OS X then if it still panics without adding any 3rd party software, there has to be some problem with the computer.

  • Having trouble with kernal_task, fan, overheating, and lag issues with my Macbook Pro. What should I do?

I've had this problem with my Macbook Pro for the past few months. I am starting to become increasing dissatisfied with this product since it's less than even a year old and going through so many problems. I've taken at least 10 trips to the Apple Genius Bar in the past year.
    I've had issues with
    1) erratic trackpad
    2) wifi connection timeouts
    3) kernal_task taking up 300% of my CPU, my fan become crazy and just having my laptop lag to the point where I can't even use it.
I sent in my laptop for repairs last week again and they replaced my logic board and some other things. I recieved my laptop back yesterday, but I'm finding the same exact problem is happening again this morning. I still have warranty and set up another appointment for a few days... but the amount of trips I've taken is really starting to irritate me and my problem still isn't solved. What should I do? Is there another way to solve this or should I just keep going back to Genius Bar...
I regret buying this laptop. =\ It was so expensive but yet has so many problems. I've never had to deal with anything this cumbersome with my past few laptops.

If you've taken it back for the same problems over and over again, I suggest that you start asking for a replacement. Ensure that you've backed everything up to an ext HD and removed your personal data and information. IIRC, repeating problems warrant a replacement.

  • Having issues with 13" MacBook Pro. Running very slow and blank screen and sleep mode.

Bought my MBPro summer 2009. About a month / 6 weeks ago it began to run extremely slow at points. Now it is running poorly and getting very slow on a daily basis, to the point where it will not open applications, documents or even web pages for in excess of 5 minutes. I'm beginning to lose patience!
Also at the exact same time of these performance issues occuring, my MacBook Pro will not awaken from sleep mode when the lid is closed. Showing a blank dark screen and having to hard reset in order to boot up my system again and get it running.
What is the best solution in order to resolve these issues?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

Did you run Disk Utility>First Aid?  If so what were the results?  This is a copy of mine, note that the bottom line says:  The partition map appears to be OK:
    Ciao.

  • Wifi, power and cooling issues with my MacBook Pro.

I've had my MacBook Pro for about 2 years and I've been really pleased with its performance from work I've thrown at it. I initially got this MacBook Pro refurbished from the Mac store and it has a Apple Care protection plan. Although this past year I've noticed several issues that are probably hardware related. First, my MacBook's WiFi does not receive WiFi signals from the great distances it used to anymore. The times I can pick up WiFi are within like 5 yards from my wireless router. Second, I'm having an issue with the power. This past week, it seems my Macbook Pro does not run off the battery anymore. It only powers on when connected into the power supply. If I unplug the power supply, my Macbook turns off. It does not revert to the battery which is strange. Third, cooling seems to be a problem. The Macbook Pro is getting very hot. It burns my lap when it is holding there. The cooling problem has lasted since I got my Macbook back in January of 2007. I thought it was normal since I would load the CPU with some graphics intensive games. Now the Macbook Pro gets hot to doing some less CPU intensive tasks like surfing the web or word processing. I have noticed, a decrease in performance, longer boot times, loading of web browsers, and word processing applications. Would this be the best time to consider taking my Macbook Pro and for repair with apple care? I'd like to trouble shoot these issues to know exactly why these problems are happening. I have a feeling it could be due to the Macbook Pro getting hot. As for cooling I go by the manual and place it on a table or hard surface, or my lap. I pretty much want to know what is wrog and how to prevent issues like this in the future.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you have several issues:
I don't know why your MBP can only receive wireless signals from 5 feet away. Unless possibly the antenna has worked loose. But I'm just guessing.
Regarding the power, is your battery still good? Have you tried resetting the SMC?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
Regarding the heat issue, have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test? If you check your fans with iStatPro, are both running at an appropriate speed for the heat?
Also, have you checked in Activity Monitor for any out of control processes which might be running in the background and hogging the CPU?
A good place to start would be with the AHT. Since you have Applecare, you should also have a Tech Tool Deluxe disc, and you can run that too. Should anything turn up in the form of an error code, that would indicate a hardware problem. Write down the code and call Apple to arrange for repair.
If you have access to an Apple Store, you could also just take your Mac in for evaluation.
    Good luck!

  • I have an issue with my Macbook Pro 2011 monitor

So recently my screen has doing and I can't seem to understand why.

Do you have a problem with the Macbook Pro display itself? Well from the screenshot, there isn't anything wrong with it.

  • ISight issues with new macbook pro Retina ?

Hi all, since I have my new MPB with Retina display I have been having some issues with the isight camera, when it first boots in photobooth of facetime sometimes the screen (from the camera) is all blue or green and with some weird line and then it stabilizes for a while but the image is all grainy and looks cheap. The guy at the apple hotline told me to reset the SMC and it seemed to have improved a bit but it's still not that good !
Any ideas on what could be happening ?
    Thank you all

You're welcome - I Googled "Macintosh webcams" and came up with quite a few different units.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Anyone having issues with their MacBook Pro Retina losing network connections?

I have been having a problem in which my internet connection, which will be working normally prior to closing the Mac, will not reconnect after it's woken up.  I have to go so far as to reset my Time Machine AND Macbook to restore the connection.  I noticed the most recent update for Mountain Lion also included some mention of a specific patch for Macbook Pro Retina's.  Does anyone know of a documented issue?

Some recent updates from Apple might affect your problem, but I can't be sure.  How long have you been having the problem?
I have to go so far as to reset my Time Machine AND Macbook to restore the connection.
Don't confuse "Time Capsule", an Apple Wi-Fi base station, with "Time Machine", backup software included with OS X since version 10.5.  Your problem involves the former, not the latter.
