Having problems with java
This is mainly a problem with either the JRE or the JVM (not sure which... for some reason have both on my computer). I use Mozilla Firefox as my main browser but this same thing happens when using Netscape 7.2. Also, my OS is Windows ME. Now onto the problem: Whenever I try to load a game applet or some other java applet I usually get an error in one of these three files: JPINSCP.DLL, MSVCRT.DLL, or KERNEL32.DLL. This happens no matter the time of day and no matter what I do. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the V5 version of JRE to see if that would help but it hasn't. Any help with this would be appreciated.
What error???

Our school is having problems with Java. We cannot open our gradebooks which require jnlp or java to open. They worked until January 31 and then quit. I uploaded the Java from oracle but it doesn't open anything it just keeps running. Any ideas?

Can anyone help with a problem I am having using a Java Chat application on a website?
I have tried to use Java Chat and the applet, when clicking the "private message" link, takes a long time to open up, and locks up my computer when it is doing so.
I did download the latest version of Java to my computer and this problem exists using both the Netscape and Internet Explorer latest browsers.
I am using Windows XP on a Dell Computer with a DSL connection.
The website is http://www.gay.com/chat
I did get an error message one time that saved a file to my desktop.
Can anyone advise me what is going on?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have contacted technical support at http://www.gay.com to no avail.

Here is the code which I am not sure has anything to do with the problem or not:

Updated to Snow Leopard, now having problems with Java??
I've had my MacBookPro for five years, and I'm thrilled it's lasted so long with no bugs. However, since I updated from Tiger to Snow Leopard on my MBP, things have been running slow, hiccuping, etc. I've run the disc utility app a couple of times, and each time there is a long list of problems in the log under the categories "Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app/Contents/Resources/Drives.icns", and
"System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/lib/management- agent.jar".
This feels a lot like a virus. Can anyone advise? I'm real worried.
Thanks,
NancyNancy... there aren't any Mac viruses.
Your profile shows you are running v10.6.3. If that is the case, you need to update your system software to v10.6.7.
Click your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then click Software Update.
And check the startup disk in case it needs repairing.
Launch Disk Utility. /Applications/Utilities. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions). if the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
And how much free space there is on the startup disk... not enough and the drive will slow down. While you have the Disk Utility window open, at the bottom of the window see: Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have 15% free disk space.
Another way to keep an eye on free disk space, right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available.
"Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app/Contents/Resources/Drives.icns", and
"System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/lib/management- agent.jar".
Those are just messages from verifying disk permissions. Nothing to worry about. I see the same ones.
One key thing to remember with computers. Always backup your important files on a timely basis. -
Having problem with java Timestamp
Hey guys,
I'm creating a Timestamp variable and then passing that variable to a method which is populating the Timestamp variable.
When I get the value back its still null. Aren't all objects pass by reference? Am I missing something.
Here is the code that I'm using
Timestamp tStamp=null;
boolean returnValue=someMethod(tStamp);
I've checked the value of tStamp inside method and its getting populating but after the method call value of tStamp stays null.
Please let me know what I'm doing wrong.
Thankssam2020 wrote:
In other words if a Object is instantiated then its value would be retained after it is changed in the method. Err...kind of. A reference is something that can be pointed to any object of an agreeable type, and has little to do with any particular object. For instance, you could do this
Object ts = new Object();
ts = new Object();
ts = new Object();
ts = new Object();
ts = new Object();
ts = new Object();
ts = new Object();At this point, ts has pointed to 8 completely separate objects, but you've only used one reference. Each time you reassign ts to a different Object, all references to the previously referenced objects have been lost and the Object will eventually be garbage collected.
Similarly you can create an Object without ever having assigned it to a reference:
new Object();
new Object();
new Object();
new Object();
new Object();
new Object();
new Object();
new Object();This time, you've created 8 objects and have never even used a reference.
Think of a reference as a plate of food.
When you take a plate out of the cupboard, it's not linked to any specific food, even if there is a bunch of food in your fridge. This is similar to:
Object plate; //or Object plate = null;You could bake a cake, but this has nothing to do with your plate...yet.
Object cakePan = new Object(); //bake a cake...but it's not on your plate yet!Then you can transfer the cake to your plate
Object plate = cakePan; //now plate is holding your new cake...but that doesn't make your plate a cake!Of course you could always scrape the rest of the cake into the garbage:
Object plate = null;Or put something else on it instead:
Object plate = fridge.takePizza();But the point is, your plate isn't tied down to what's on it. Just like a reference isn't tied (or even very much related) to what it points to. (Unless you use the final keyword).
Can you tell I'm hungry?
Edit:
To tie this into your original question, when you call a method, you could pass the reference (plate) by value or by reference.
So if you wanted to give your brother the rest of your cake, you could either:
a) Pass him the plate (pass by reference). This would allow him to replace the contents of the place before he gives it back to you. Or,
b) Move the cake to his plate (pass by value). This means he can change the cake (eat some, whatever), but he can't change what's on YOUR plate.
Java always uses b).
This analogy of course breaks down when you realize that with references, multiple references can reference the same object, but you can't put a single piece of cake on multiple plates.

I am having problems with java
Hi
I am using a banking website for online management. I use Safari. Java is required for this applet to run.
When I login, the message comes Timeout! And the applet shut offs.
I am attaching the message that comes when I want to login.
Any solution?

RuumiHello,
If Java worked before March then it's probably been disabled my those lovely people at Microsoft who are so helpful and really want Java to be an integral part of our lives.
Your problem may have been caused by the silent removal of the MSJVM from your machine, which can disable the Sun JVM without warning.
To test this theory, type "jview" into a command window (Start -> Run, "cmd")
this will tell you if you still have the MSJVM (which is probably a "no")
Then type "java -version". (which tells you the installed version of the Sun JVM)
If the Sun JVM is installed and the MSJVM is not, then create an empty text file called msjava.txt, then rename it to msjava.dll and put it in the System32 folder of the windows directory (probably C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32)
This will fool your computer into thinking the MSJVM is still installed. Then all the JVM calls will be passed to the Sun JVM and Java should work again.
If this doesn't work, you may need to install a different major version of the Sun JVM from http://java.sun.com/products/archive/index.html.
Hope this helps.

Still having problem with java regex
Hi
I have the following data in a text file:
InstallDate:
Location:
Name: ps1
PortName: IP_192.45.10.200
ServerName:
ShareName:
I want to print out the string after the word "Name: " in this case it would be "ps1"
I ve tried it as follow but it does not seem to work:
Pattern p =Pattern.compile("Name :(\\w*)");
String line = null;
try
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("c:\\printerinfo.txt"));
while((line = in.readLine()) != null)
Matcher m = p.matcher(line);
boolean matchFound = m.find();
if(matchFound )
String printName = m.group(1);
System.out.println( printName );
else
System.out.println("line" + line);
catch (Exception e)
System.out.println(e);
Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can get this to work?
thanksYour line has a type: Pattern p =Pattern.compile("Name: (\\w*)");The space should be after ":", not before it.
This should pick up both Name: ps1 and PortName: something, since you Matcher.find() will find anthing that matches.
To match only from the beginning of the line, use:Pattern p =Pattern.compile("^Name: (\\w*)"); -

thanksHave you tried the update 10 release - http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp ?
I don't know that it will solve your problem or not, but it's worth a try.

Early problems with Java on my Macbook.
Hi, I am a former high school computer science student and I'm having problems with Java as I've recently moved from Windows to a Mac. The following is a letter I wrote to my prior computer science teacher but he does not seem to be responding. I think all you need to know is that DrawHouse and JumpingJacks are simple Java programs we made in class that utilize an object called DrawingTool (which is a graphics environment). DrawingTool is contained in gpdraw.jar and also was contained in our class' apcslib.jar. Also, FileInput is a class contained in apcslib.jar.
I basically transferred all my JAR files (apcslib.jar, etc.) from my Windows computer to my Mac. I didn't think anything was wrong or corrupted with them because they're the same JAR files that I used for my Java programs on my Windows comp in high school and when I run those Java programs now, they still work. But for some reason if I try to run, say, DrawHouse or JumpingJacks with those same programs on my Macbook, it gives me the following errors on runtime (it compiles fine).
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
at apcslib.DrawingTool.move( DrawingTool.java:456)
at java.awt.Component.setLocation( Component.java:1705)
at java.awt.Window.init( Window.java:289)
at java.awt.Window.<init>( Window.java:318)
at java.awt.Frame.<init>( Frame.java:419)
at java.awt.Frame.<init>( Frame.java:384)
at javax.swing.JFrame.<init>( JFrame.java:150)
at apcslib.DrawingTool.<init>( DrawingTool.java:45)
at apcslib.DrawingTool.<init>( DrawingTool.java:106)
at JumpingJacks.main( JumpingJacks.java:35)
So I thought, maybe I'm not importing the JAR files correctly. But if I import gsdraw.jar or a different apcslib.jar that I downloaded from some random teacher's website on the internet (and that also happens to have DrawingTool in it) then it compiles and runs fine. So I thought, ok, maybe it's a problem with this one particular apcslib.jar that I transferred from my Windows computer. But like I said, DrawHouse and JumpingJacks run fine on my windows comp, and most ridiculous of all, I tried running Tasmania on my Macbook (which uses the FileInput class from your apcslib.jar) and THAT works fine! So to recap, I'm not importing the JAR files wrong and at times there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the apcslib.jar you gave us and probably not anything wrong with my IDE, seeing that importing of other JAR files works fine (I'm using eclipse and/or xcode, and the same problem occurs with both). Now of course, I could just go ahead and use the apcslib that I downloaded from the internet, but it's very inconvenient since it doesn't match your own apcslib's contents (for example, it doesn't have FileInput). By the way, I've also tried adding the JARS directly to the Java Extensions instead of importing them as external JARS, but that doesn't solve the problem. I've also attached the apcslib.jar in case you think that it's somehow corrupted or something....
Do you have any idea about what could be wrong or where I should go from here?
Thanks for all your help!
Bryan HuhThanks for the reply, but if it is a problem with how
I'm using DrawingTool, then shouldn't it run with
errors on my Windows comp too?Maybe, maybe not. If you're doing something that's correct on one but not the other - using file names for Windows on Linux Mac), for instance.
The same EXACT source
code will compile and run fine on my Windows comp,
but run with errors on my Macbook. And if it's a bug
with DrawingTool, then shouldn't my Windows comp also
encounter the problem and run with errors?No. the DT programmer could have done the same thing, using code that's correct on Windows but not on Linux. Or there could be a difference in the Java versions on the couputers and code that's valid in the later version is failing in the earlier, or vice versa. -
Problem with Java and Windows (Mainly Vista and UAC)
Hi all,
I am having a problem with a program that I've devoloped. The program itself is packaged as a jar and I plan to deploy it across multiple platforms eventually however right now i am only concerned about windows based systems. I have made an installer for a windows baised systems using NSIS to install the software files. I made the installer as I need several java packages to be installed so the program would work (JAI, J3D, JAI ImageIO) and I also require the program to have fileassociations on windows.
I know that this is not what java is about, however the majority of the users will be on windows baised systems so I've decided that OS specific installers is the best option.
During the process I have noticed that there are several key problem with java for this type of application!
The first issue that I have come across is getting file associations to work on java. As a .jar is not an excutable it is not possible to directly associate a filetype with it in java so to overcome this I currently run the program from a .bat files and also the program requires large memory so this also allows me to run the program with -xmx. The batch file that I use is :
<code>
cd PATH TO PROGRAM
start javaw -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -Xmn100M -Xms500M -Xmx1000M -jar "PATH TO PROGRAM\program.jar" %1 -vram 134217728
pause;
</code>
Ok so all this appears to work fine and allows windows to have file associations and start the program and thats all works perfectly but this is a non-ideal solution. Has anyone got any advice on improving this?
The next problem that I have appears to be a problem with Vista and UAC (user access control). When a user installs the program and installs the program into the program files directory I found that the program did not work and kept saying that I did not have access to the files in the current directory. This is a problem as I read and write settings files during program execution.
On a Vista system UAC prevents file write operations into the Program Files directory unless the program has requested elevated status even if the user is a full administrator. The probem is that there appears to be no real way to achieve this under java that I'm aware of...
Has anyone else had this probem and has a suitable solution?
Any advice on these issues would realy be appricated.
Regards
JoeyOk so i've kinda found a solution, its not ideal but its very good. I found this program called Elevate
A link to the site I got it was
http://www.wintellect.com/cs/blogs/jrobbins/archive/2007/03/27/elevate-a-process-at-the-command-line-in-vista.aspx
This program allows you start java with a UAC dialog for high access using
Elevate java -jar myjar.jar
This then allows you to have full access using java... I guess it could be dangerous but it does the job. -
Problem with Java Dates and UPDATE for SQL2000
I am having problems with the date formats for Java. I am trying to put the current date time into a SQL table, here it the code I am using:
var Today = new Date()
var conn = Server.CreateObject( "ADODB.Connection" )
conn.Open( "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Server=(local);Database=BillTracking;UID=sa;PWD=;")
var sql = "UPDATE BillAssignments SET DatePosted = " + Today + " WHERE AssignmentID = '" + Request.QueryString("AssignmentID") + "'"
var rs = conn.execute(sql)
I keep getting different errors and I have been unable to find a solution yet. I know that I need to change the date format from the Java standard to the one that SQL likes.
Help....
Norm...Please tell us where the Java part of this comes in. I see that you are using JavaScript to load up data via an ADO connection (presumably on an IIS platform) - but I do not see where you are using Java

Problem with Java after Software Update to 10.5.7
Hi,
I am facing problem with Java after having run Software upgrades.
Here is the whole story. I recently moved to iMac 10.5.6 from PowerPc 10.4. On this new machine I was having problem running a 3rd party application, which requires JVM. As this application worked well on Tiger, I decided to upgrade JVM on my iMAC using Software Upgrade(was I insane!!). As I like my systems to be updated (as with linux on my personal machine) I clicked "install all". As a result I have the following upgrades run on my machine:
2009-05-20 13:12:01 +0200: Installed "Mac OS X Update Combined" (10.5.7)
2009-05-20 13:12:10 +0200: Installed "Remote Desktop Client Update" (3.2.2)
2009-05-20 13:12:26 +0200: Installed "Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2" (1.0)

2009-05-20 13:59:58 +0200: Installed "iTunes" (8.1.1)
But now, simply running $java on the prompt hangs, i.e. it takes no action.

cheersHi man,
In the wake of this java problem I resorted to keep working on my old machine, and today in my spare time I tried to fix this new machine.
So I execute $java on prompt, and then try to check the files it has opened, using lsof -p pid
I see it referring to
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0/Home/bin/java
isn't this usually the JAVA_HOME
However, executing $/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0/Home/bin/java
hangs!!
but
$/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home/bin/java
works!!
$ pwd
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6/Home/bin
$ ./java -version
java version "1.6.0_07"

So, I changed the links as follows

However, shall that be the reason!
what is in your /Versions/Current/
I got the following
$ ls /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current

There is no /Home in here, which is usually the case for /1.5 or /1.6
Anyways, things seems to work for the moment. Lets see if I get problem with using Java.

My wife has been having problems with Safari, and many third party software and malware programs infecting her Mac Book Pro. I have tried to reset Safari but it keeps coming back, taking over Safari, changing defaults, start pages, and search engines, Etc.
Is it safe to use programs like MacKeeper, who keeps send my wife's computer message and alerts, or should I just wipe the drive and start over?
